The fact that Evans wasn't offered any sort of contract at all until AFTER Jason Taylor was cut just goes to show this front office doesn't have a flippin clue what they are doing. I like the idea of cutting ties with Taylor and saving the $8 mil, but the fact that it took them so long to decide to do so is just poor planning.

Seems to be a very ,very easy schedule against the run, with games against Detroit, Oak, St Louis, N.O., SD, Carolina, Atlanta, KC, Denver, among others - this could be a best-ever season for Portis, perhaps better than his days in Denver!

Probably one that doesn't solely rely upon stats to evaluate a player. I'm far happier with ARE than I would have been with TO. Maybe that makes me crazy, but I don't want a bozo like that on my team.

Probably one that doesn't solely rely upon stats to evaluate a player. I'm far happier with ARE than I would have been with TO. Maybe that makes me crazy, but I don't want a bozo like that on my team.

Former 'Skins cap guy Jimmy Halsell has a blog and he goes over the details of the Haynesworth contract. Much of it we've already heard, but it's an interesting read nonetheless.

Some of you have asked, given that the Skins routinely are up against the cap, how could they afford this contract? The answer is that Haynesworth's 2009 cap number is only $7M; that amount is comprised of a $6M P5 salary (by the way P5 stands for "paragraph 5" of the standard player contract) plus $1M in pro-ration of his $5M signing bonus. By cutting Shawn Springs, the Skins saved themselves $6M in 2009 cap space; so you could say that the Skins just about swapped out 1 for 1 Springs for Haynesworth. Without knowing what the future holds, the Skins are going to have to plan accordingly to afford this contract because Haynesworth's cap numbers beyond 2010 exceed $10M per year; those are significant cap charges. This means the Skins better start getting some cheap labor via the draft to offset this contract's impact on their cap (assuming there is one) in future years.

Also, JLC reports that the 'Skins have ~$7 million of cap space right now.

Clinton will go as the O-Line goes. Right now the line looks better than it did last year with Dockery back. Still a hole at RT and no depth behind an injury-prone RG. I expect there to be another signing and at least one draft pick to try and shore that up. I expect CP to have a pretty good year. Lets go with 1,400 yards and 10 scores for now.

I was just reading that article again, having done a search for "Greg Blache" to see what he's had to say lately. From the article:

Someone asked defensive coordinator Greg Blache what he wanted to do next, having added Haynesworth.

Blache, who might use Haynesworth at left end in some situations, was the Green Bay Packers' defensive line coach when White landed as the 1993 prize of free agency. Jason Campbell and Carlos Rogers get a raise

Carlos Rogers's base salary has increased from $602k to $1.403m due to an escalator.

Jason Campbell's base salary has increased from $783k to $2.858m for the same reason.

The increases come from playing time clauses in their contracts, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, with those escalators negotiated into the rookie contracts they signed in 2005.

Both are eligible to be free agents after the 2009 season. They would normally be unrestricted but if there is not an extension to the CBA this year they would be restricted.

seems that every reference I read about Evans is that he was a locker-room leader, too. don't get me wrong, I'm a P.Daniels fan and hope he can play again, but if we're talking 6-7 years older and, let's face it, injury-prone, then it makes a lot more sense to PAY YOUR OWN and lock up Evans. Oh, but we OVERPAID SOMEBODY ELSE'S and have no money to do that. Right. Almost forgot the FO philosophy. This ensures NO DEPTH EVER. you guys hard of hearing, or what? I keep having to shout.

I hear that Renaldo "iwaswasheduptwoyearsago" Wynn may be brought back.

Wynne (and Daniels) are better fits for what Blache is looking for in that position. It's a run anchor position. Blache isn't looking for pass rushing from that slot. You can agree to disagree, but Demetric Evans is not a guy who can anchor the point of attack on outside runs. Wynne did that for us. Daniels did that for us. A guy like Olshansky (or a similar 3-4 style end) likely could do that for us. Evans was always going to be a situational pass rusher for us. If he was only going to demand situational pass rusher money, then yeah, we should have locked him up. But it's clear that Blache didn't see him as a starting DE.

I'm an Evans fan too, but there's probably a lot of truth to what you're saying. I just hope we can get 13-14 healthy games out of Daniels this year because if we don't we're screwed.

This is a great point. And BTW Springs' specialty was matching up 1:1 against big WR's, so his value to us would have been reduced anyway because of this. Interesting. I am really wondering what the move is here. Even if they do bring Daniels back, they still have a pretty big need at DE. Daniels isn't a guy to depend on heading into the year. I think reasonable depth at DE is imperative and there is no depth there at all right now. That and we certainly have a need for an OLB and OT. So 3 needs, very little cap room and 1 day one draft pick.

I think they'll have different effects. The Giants will stick with their regular offense, and suffer a modest dropoff in their passing game (which began last year when Burress went out) until one of the other WR's emerges as a steady deep threat.The Cowboys will just shift to much more running the ball, I think. With most of their playmakers at the RB position I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of the balls that went to Owens go to the RB's. With 2 RB's on the field at once they can split one wide, do other things to create mismatches with LB's.

some of that...and some of it was going from a playing with nothing to lose attitude to (fatally) playing NOT to lose. I was at the Bengal game and still cannot believe that they went deep not one time

I am not sure LB is that bad. The Redskins had something like the 5th ranked D and HB Blades started a lot of games at LB. He can't be that bad. The fact is you can't have a superstar at every position, so you need to decide where to have them. The OL is by far the biggest position in need. They need quality and quantity.

Looks like the Redskins front office did well here. They did not tendre Doughty, and he resigns, presumably for less than the lowest tender offer. The fact is, backup safeties don't go for a whole lot.

WASHINGTON—Redskins coach Jim Zorn reportedly asked new defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to begin bulking up Monday, claiming that by adding 2,400 pounds to his frame the All-Pro could improve his run-stuffing ability by single-handedly filling every gap on the defensive line. The Redskins have a hole at strong-side linebacker, one of several roster vacancies. With just four draft picks, filling them all in April seems unlikely and the team is a bit cap-strapped after giving Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall big contracts. The Redskins have essentially been hunting for bargains since.

The Redskins need two defensive ends, two linebackers, a right tackle, a right guard/guard or center, and could be short on depth at wide receiver and cornerback if key members of last year's draft class don't progress.
