I assumed the Redskins couldn't afford Pace.Also, while Pace is an upgrade (assuming is starts for Jansen), the Redskins need to get younger on the OL.

Not following the 'Skins closely...anyone care to give their assessment of the state of the WR-corps for the time being?
Moss seems to be a staple - however, seemed to remember reading that they wanted to give Thomas/Kelly more time to see the field and ARE would tend to take more of a back-seat in the WR rotation.
Saw a thread the other week with regards to Kelly having his knee (s) scoped again recently as well...any thought as to what we can expect out of him in '09-'10 and beyond?

'skins WR Assesment:Overall Grade: C-Santana Moss: A fine #1A in a 1A/1B Situation (Reference DJax/KRob in Seattle), as opposed to a traditional #1 / #2 arrangement (Pure #1 he is not) Problem: 'skins do not have a 1B Option available on the roster at this time. SMoss will never perform as he's capable of in this Offense until there's a WR on the opposite side of the field that keep the secondary from dedicating their attention to him 10 yards off the ball.Antwaan Randel-El: A fine slot WR (Reference Bobby Engram in Seattle). Problem: See above. Without a quality WR 1B, or any other quality WR options on the Roster, not only does Randel-El have to play out of position as the 1B (where he's overmatched by starter caliber cover corners), but when he DOES play in the slot, he can be easily defended from getting space, and thus, getting YAC, which is his 'best' role. Also, he'd be outstanding playing QB in a 'WildCat' scheme, but thus far the 'skins Offensive Coaching Staff has not implemented that into the Playbook.Malcolm Kelly (knees) / Devin Thomas (intelligence): neither is either a short-term or long-term dependable answer, unless a miracle occurs. It's only a matter of time before Kelly breaks down, and Thomas hasn't shown he's capable of picking up the Offense at the pro level.James Thrash: The fact that I'm even mentioning his name is cause to lower this grade to a D+, but I'm feeling benevolent today.Pass Protection / QB: Pass protection is poor, and so far hasn't been addressed enough to make a difference from last Season. However, adding Dockery back into the fold should increase the effectiveness of the running game, which might serve to take some pressure off the passing game and open up the play-action somewhat. Might increase the effectiveness of the screen pass as well. QB is a work in progress, but overall positive: give Jason Campbell a reasonable amount time, and he's shown improvement making decisions on what to do with the football. Right now, though, the best of those decisions will continue to be either a dump-off/screen to Portis, or to find Chris Cooley somewhere over the short middle.Looking forward to 2009: Unless the 'skins find a way to improve pass protection and/or find a player capable of playing 1B to Santana's 1A, you should target Cooley as a Top 6 TE (Upper Tier Starter in a 12-Team League), and Portis as a Top 12 RB, especially in PPR Leagues.That's my take. Of course there are others.

It's too early to say that it'll take a miracle for either Kelly or Thomas to be a dependable answer. They've only been here one year. Neither did much in his first year; neither one proved to be so bad that he needs a miracle to be productive, either.Kelly is the least likely to ever be productive because of his ongoing knee problems. I'd say this year will be the one that shows if his knees will permanently render him useless. Assuming Thomas learns an average amount about the playbook in the offseason, he'll be on the field a lot this year. Considering the time he lost to injury and his minimal knowledge of the playbook he was on the field a lot last year. I don't see any reason a miracle's needed in his case; just decent progress in the offseason.

Has there ever been a statement from a doctor that has diagnosed Kelly with 'chronic' knee problems. Or, does it all still stem from Mayock's comment prior to last year's draft?
Are the Washington team doctors really that bad that they cannot diagnose a chronic knee condition prior to drafting Kelly?

I think I remember seeing the question asked on this board before but I don't recall if it was ever answered. I thought I'd post it here since you guys follow the Redskins a little more closely.It seems to me that the 'chronic' label all stems from Mayock's pre-draft comments about him sliding on draft boards. It also seems like if he really did have a chronic condition, the staff doctors could have easily diagnosed this and would have meticulously examined him, especially with all the pre-draft hype about it. In addition, if they did diagnose him with a chronic condition, why on earth would the Redskins ignore that information and use a 2nd round pick on him? I can see them whiffing on a pick for other reasons but to ignore medical information would be just plain stupid.
Agent Dave Butz? I bet he just walks in and intimidates teams to pay his clients whatever he wants.

I don't think so. He's too expensive like you said, and they're interested in trying their young WR's. They also need an OL and a DE far more than a WR.

I agree from your team standpoint. I do not expect him to sign in the NFC East (NY only option...imo). I think it will be Indy/Tennesse.

But what if he wasn't too expensive? He's apparently getting zero interest from any teams and I don't see why that would be unless his contract demands were the issue. It seems that if he wants a job, he's going to have to get cheaper.Also, going by this WR assessment nittanylion gave:
...wouldn't Holt make the perfect compliment to Moss? They would be a true 1A/1B combo, and allow ARE to move to the slot, plus it upgrades the top 5 WRs tremendously (Holt moves to the top, Thrash can be let go). With so much uncertainty regarding Kelly and Thomas going forward it would seem beneficial if they could keep learning in a backup role, and from a boderline HOFer at that.Again, all of this presumes the right price tag, but Holt's addition would seem to be an obvious offensive upgrade.

A thread has been started with the info from the guy over at KFFL that predicts compensatory picks every year. FWIW, he's predicting the 'Skins pick up a 7th rounder for Brunell.

Free weights is a "purer" way to lift. There is no machine to stabilize the weight and help direct the force, which means you have to work harder to lift the weight. It's a lot more "realistic" in that players aren't using machines to move opposing players' body mass around either. I doubt that they weren't using free weights at all before this "tinkering" occurred, but they should emphasize free weights over machines IMHO. The only downside is a higher risk of injury if someone's technique is poor, but they have trainers for that and if someone is recovering from injury they can start out on the machines.

That is interesting, if true. I wonder what the relationship is like between Blache and Palermo. Is it more of a mentor/student relationship, or does (did?) Blache expect Palermo to be pulling all the weight in coaching the DL?Does anyone remember if Palermo was picked/brought in by Blache, or was he brought in through Zorn or Ceratto/Snyder?

ughThat's what I was afraid of. I can imagine that the relationship between Blache and Palermo isn't that great. A guy is brought in, not of Blache's choice, and struggles in the same position at which Blache succeeded? That has to be extremely frustrating, to say the least, for Blache.

Ex-Titan Albert Haynesworth indicted on traffic charges

FRANKLIN — Former Tennessee Titan Albert Haynesworth III has been indicted on two misdemeanor driving charges connected with a serious crash.
Haynesworth, who recently signed a $100 million deal to play for the Washington Redskins, is charged with reckless driving and driving a vehicle with expired registration. A Williamson County grand jury indicted Haynesworth on Monday.
Haynesworth went to the Brentwood Police Department on Wednesday and was taken to the Williamson County jail, where he stayed for less than an hour before posting $1,000 and being released.
The charges stem from a crash that occurred Dec. 13 on Interstate 65 in Brentwood. Kelly Dean, a witness to the crash, said Haynesworth, driving a 2008 black Ferrari, passed her at a high rate of speed, while she was traveling at about 79 mph. Dean said the Ferrari charged lanes and was attempting to pass a gray 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis.
“About the second time he went to pass and move over, the grey vehicle was in his way,” Dean wrote in a statement to police. “The grey vehicle then quickly went into the lane to the right to get away from the black car but could not get over.”
Brentwood police officer J.S. Ellis wrote in a report that Corey Dewan Edmondson, the driver of the Grand Marquis, had to take “evasive action” and lost control of his car, crossing through a lane and striking a concrete barrier in the median.
District Attorney General Kim Helper said she believed it was appropriate to have a grand jury look at the crash and determine whether Haynesworth should be charged.
“He was on probation at the time for speeding,” Helper said. “He’d been placed on that probation just four days before the accident. Based on witness accounts he was traveling at a high rate of speed.”
Haynesworth was placed on 30 days probation on Dec. 9, after appearing before Williamson County Circuit Court Judge Robbie Beal for a speeding charge. A state trooper said Haynesworth was driving 103 mph in a 70 mph zone last March. Haynesworth entered a guilty plea and paid a $1,000 fine. Part of the plea deal included the speeding charge being expunged from his criminal record, but Helper said these new charges could change that.
“I can’t tell you how that has been resolved,” Helper said. “Was there successful completion of probation is something we’ll be looking at as part of these proceedings.”
Edmondson’s attorney, Jon Perry, said the 25-year-old Antioch resident is unable to walk, work or pay his medical and household bills. A fund has been established to raise money for Edmondson.

Confused about the lack of progress in negotiations with the Redskins, veteran defensive end Phillip Daniels no longer is confident he is in the team's plans, he said today.
"When people look you in your face, when you talk to them man to man, and they tell you how much they want you back and how much you mean to the team, yeah, you think" an agreement will be reached, Daniels said in a lengthy phone interview. "But then when you don't hear anything for a while, and the questions you ask don't get answered, when they don't clarify anything, you start to wonder, 'What's going on?' Everybody I talk to [in team management] tells me they want me back, but I'm starting to feel very unwanted right now."
Hoping to fill their hole at left end after releasing Pro Bowler Jason Taylor earlier this month, the Redskins quickly moved to bring back Daniels, 36, who sat out last season because of a knee injury that occurred on the first day of training camp in July. The Redskins offered Daniels a minimum contract, figuring he would accept it and return for his sixth season with them and 14th in the NFL.
But Daniels expected a bigger proposal from the Redskins "after going out there and playing hurt all the times I did and being the leader they said I was," Daniels said. "You tell someone how important they are to you, you don't give them the minimum. That's not showing somebody that you feel they're important and you want them. I told them don't come back to my agent until they've got something concrete. That was like 2 1/2 weeks ago. I keep hearing from some people [at the complex] that they're going to get it worked out, but I haven't seen that yet."
The Redskins yesterday brought back defensive lineman Renaldo Wynn, a former team leader released before the 2007 season, to help fill the void at left end. "I talked to Renaldo, he called me before" he accepted the team's one-year offer, Daniels said. "I told Renaldo to go ahead and do what's best for his family, because what's best for his family may not be right for my family."
Daniels, who makes his offseason home in Chicago, traveled to the complex to conduct a private workout for owner Daniel Snyder, Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, Coach Jim Zorn, defensive coordinator Greg Blache and other team officials in late February. He said the Redskins told him they were impressed with his progress in rehabilitation after knee surgery, and revealed their plan to re-sign him and Wynn to address their needs at left end. "But Vinny never clarified who the starter would be," Daniels said. "Every time I asked him, he said he envisioned a rotation with me and Renaldo. But the starter is going to be on the field more than the backup, and it's just another thing that's confusing to me."
Concerns about Daniels's knee and age could be factors in the Redskins' decision to hold the line with their contract offer, Daniels said, and the team was only about $7 million under the $127 million salary cap before it reached a deal with Wynn. "I know they don't have a lot of room left, and they gave a lot of money to Albert Haynesworth," Daniels said. "Albert Haynesworth is a great addition, he's going to help a lot, but maybe with the money they gave him, the space they have left, and my knee and age, they're using all that as an excuse with me. But they've always found a way to make the cap work when they want somebody, and they keep telling me they want me. I really think Dan is a great owner because he wants to win and he will spend money on players, and I really want to be back with the Redskins. I hope it will work out. I thought it really would. I just don't know now."

This is going to be my fifth season in this league, and I understand how it works. But I always try to keep a positive mind-set about everything. Going back and watching the season, watching the film, I thought I had a really good year

"So I'm very positive about what I've done and what I can do better. That's where the excitement is for me, just getting the chance to go back out there and grow each year. The great thing about the internet is that we already know Haynesworth is guilty without having to waste time on a trial.
Philip Daniels deserves a contract for the vet minimum or just above. Feel free to argue that he's worth more based on his ability, age, and injury.

I expect him to say that he wants to lead us to Super Bowl championships. Instead, Mr. Wishy-Washy says "to where we want to go." WTF? Guys with no confidence who are simply hoping to steal money and 'get paid' say stuff like that. Real leaders with confidence aren't afraid to say "Super Bowl."

That was the word from Redskins front office boss Vinny Cerrato this afternoon when I questioned him about the rumors flying around the Internet about Washington trading Jason Campbell, whose contract is up after this season, to Denver for unhappy fellow quarterback Jay Cutler.
Cerrato added, "We haven't talked to anyone" when asked about Cutler and re-iterated that "Jason is going to be our quarterback this season."

I would not be opposed to this position upgrade, and the rumor of Campbell & Cooley to Cleveland with QB Quinn to Denver actually sounds reasonable. Just to be clear for anyone who does not know, the "rumors" were a bogus report on bleacherreport.com, which is now labeled "satire". According to the fake rumor, the Redskins would have given up Campbell, Cooley, and Laron Landry for Cutler, Scheffler, and a 3rd round pick.LinkJeff Tefertiller said:
