5.2 average? Much higher than I thought. I can't remember him returning one for more than 5 yards.

5.2 average? Much higher than I thought. I can't remember him returning one for more than 5 yards.

Every time Randle El fields a punt, I yell at the tv, "RUN FOWARD!" He always starts by running sideways.

Right before Randle El's botched return, the announcers were stating that Zorn had told them that the return average was lower because the Redskins are frequenlty trying to block the punt rather than set up a return I thought this was laughable. When was the last time the Redskins blocked a punt?

Right before Randle El's botched return, the announcers were stating that Zorn had told them that the return average was lower because the Redskins are frequenlty trying to block the punt rather than set up a return I thought this was laughable. When was the last time the Redskins blocked a punt?

Each enjoyed one and a half sacks Sunday, with Orakpo breaking the Redskins’ single-season record for rookie sacks, and Carter on track for a career best season. Along with Albert Haynesworth, they have put respectability back in the Washington defensive front.

A good article on our hot-button running back, Clinton Portis. I'm glad to see the article talks about Larry Brown because the way he and Portis have been used is comparable.

Lying pressed against the artificial turf inside the Georgia Dome, briefly unconscious and later unable to remember what happened, Clinton Portis looked like he smacked into a wall. Maybe he already had.

It's a dirty job, NFL running backs. They get beat up and worn out, and that's just the physical part. Doubt and hesitation tug at the psyche. Diminishing returns arrive faster than at other positions. Portis' career workload raises the question of whether that is now happening to him. He is, after all, in his sixth season with the Washington Redskins and his eighth as a professional

The No. 1 rusher in franchise history, John Riggins, played nine seasons for the Redskins. Portis has played fewer than six, yet he is second by only 880 yards. Portis averaged 293 carries during his first seven seasons and has four years of 300 or more carries in the last five.

"[Portis] is probably trending downward, but it's impossible to evaluate him based on his numbers," ESPN analyst and former quarterback Trent Dilfer said. "That is probably the second-worst offensive line in the league. Maybe the worst. Yes, he's trending downward, but he's not [finished] yet. ... Some players are just flat done because of the cumulative effect of carries and overuse. Other players, that time is near, but it is not now [for Portis]."

If not now, then when? Competing in the most violent of sports, NFL running backs probably absorb the most punishment and traditionally have had the shortest career expectancy. Some runners have been compared to "bowling balls," but according to former Redskins great Larry Brown, it's really the other way around.

"It's like you roll the ball down the alley and the pins essentially are the running backs," said Brown, whose running career was cut short by injuries and general wear and tear. "They're the ones that get knocked down every time." Brown led the league in rushing in 1970. Two years later, he gained even more yards and carried the Redskins to their first Super Bowl. He retired at 29 in 1976 after eight seasons, a shadow of the 5-foot-11, 195-pound player whom coach George Allen used again and again and still again to implement his ball-control philosophy.

"I noticed a vast difference in what I couldn't do and what I used to be able to do," Brown recalled. "I got to the point where, when the ball was handed off to me, mentally I was in and through the hole and downfield, but my body wasn't there."

RB Clinton Portis is approaching 30, and Ladell Betts is best as a backup. Spiller, with his running and receiving, could revitalize QB Jason Campbell's career.

Well, yeah, that too. I've been complaining about not just an inability to adjust, but an unwillingness to adjust. It's shown in the games and they, as a staff, have even made comments to the media about it.I've noticed the increase in screens, slants, and hitches which are obvious changes to make when your OL can't protect for more than 1 second. There is no reason to go a whole game without a couple quick screens to Moss or Thomas.

I knew stripping Zorn was the right thing to do. He had too much on his plate and hired an incompetent OC. Zorn should have played it better and he'd be liking like a decent coach right now. Best play would have been to fire Sherman Smith, bring in Lewis as OC and have the OC call the plays like most teams do. Wouldn't even had looked like a demotion. Just reassigning.

Maybe both. A coordinator at least has some exposure to adjustments. A QB coach does not. And BTW, Andy Reid sucks at it even today, and he skipped over being a OC too.

Of course, the GMs job is to identify these problems during the off season and do something about it then. The ideal time to address Zorn's playcalling and how much he has on his plate was last Janaury. If they felt an in-season change was necessary, there were many less public ways to make it.

Through nine games, Orakpo's seven sacks already are the most by any NFL rookie since 2006 and the most of any rookie in Redskins history. Making Orakpo's sack total perhaps more impressive: five of his sacks have come as a hands-down defensive end, a position he plays only about a third of the time.

"Obviously I would love to rush the passer all the time, but it's not a situation where I can do that," Orakpo said. "They need me at other spots. So I'm fine with what I'm doing now. I really enjoy it and don't have no problems."

His other two sacks have come as linebacker, though on each, Orakpo still lined up outside the tackle. In the Redskins' myriad defensive formations, Orakpo often stunts and doesn't always rush the passer from the edge. In last Sunday's win over Denver, Orakpo stopped Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton coming up the middle in what proved to be one of the game's decisive plays. Orton hurt his ankle on the tackle and missed the second half. His replacement, Chris Simms, was 3 for 13 passing for 13 yards.

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park.

ETA: The quote from Zorn:

"Albert will be a game-time decision and that's all I can tell you. Seriously, I am being upfront with this. He will be listed as questionable for the game Sunday."

Conflicting reports on Albert Haynesworth

Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is struggling with an ankle injury, and there are conflicting reports about whether he's healthy enough to play on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Scott Noll of ESPNDallas.com, citing comments that Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray made Friday on Michael Irvin's radio show, reports that Haynesworth will play against the Cowboys.

But on the 2 p.m. Eastern broadcast of SportsCenter, ESPN reported that Haynesworth is unlikely to play because of his ankle injury.

Jason Reid of the Washington Post, meanwhile, reports that Redskins coach Jim Zorn said of Haynesworth's status, "I do believe that's going to be a game-time situation."

So despite the two ESPN reports, we don't know whether Haynesworth is playing or not. And we probably won't until Sunday.

I have read some speculation (like from the Time's David Elfin) regarding Haynesworth missing this week, but so far anything saying he will miss is just that. ESPN may have read something like that and ran with it.In case I linked, Elfin posted that before practice, but even then I thought it was a horrible prediction given his reasoning. Haynesworth is far enough into his tenure with the 'Skins to be able to miss practice for a week while healing up and still be able to play effectively (know the calls, his assignments, etc.) on Sunday.

I believe the boot was off today as I read he was on a treadmill at some point today. My speculation is that Zorn would not be calling him questionable if something negative had happened as a result of the treadmill exercise.
