Entering my fourth year hacking away. Made a huge stride forward over the past few weeks. Reverse-K setup. Everything is just clicking by only having a better setup. Getting my right shoulder a bit lower. Making sure my head is behind the ball. Allows me to attack the ball from the inside so much easier. Seems like so long ago that the problem was a slice. Now mi####s are hooks. Sub 80 round is calling my name.

Made a similar change to my setup (after about 10 years) and similar results. Bad news is I'm not getting to play as much this year, so my short game feel is terrible.Did add a new 3-wood to my bag this week. Tour Edge Exotics XCG6 that I won off ebay for a song. Can't wait to try it out this weekend.

I picked up a TE Exotics 4 wood. Best fairway wood I've ever hit.

speaking of fairway woods, i picked up a Ping G25 4W (16.5) last week and finally got to play it today. this stick is a thing of beauty: can work it both fade and draw, and gets up quick from fairway and rough.

i was looking at the 3W, but when i got to the local Golf Mart the Ping rep just happened to be there and had me hit both. granted, it was indoors off a mat, but the telemetry had me hitting straighter shots, consistently, with the 4W vs the 3W. and the carry distance was only about 10 yards different between the two.

Anyone have a fatso superstroke grip on their putter?

I've been messing around with my putting just trying to get some consistency and think this is my next attempt at putting success. I've actually been reversing my hands on my grip lately for putts and that has helped some, but I still 3 putt too often.

I played with the fatso for about a year and a half (two different putters). I had only been playing for a few months when I got it and it immediately helped with my short putts. However, I have it up when I upgraded putters a couple months ago b/c I wasn't improving in putting statistics due to not being able to ever dial in speed.

Would definitely recommend it if you're too wristy and pushing and pulling putts.

I've been messing around with my putting just trying to get some consistency and think this is my next attempt at putting success. I've actually been reversing my hands on my grip lately for putts and that has helped some, but I still 3 putt too often.

i switched to a MidSize (not quite as big as the SuperStroke) putter grip last year. found it helped on short putts and i like the feel of the larger grip.

re: 3 putts - putting is 90% speed and 10% direction.

75 for my 2nd rd of year. Wonder if i can get in the 60's this year, havent practiced at all.

One thing i learned watching the pros hit balls at augusta, they dont take big backswings and they dont change their tempo no matter what club. They're like metronomes. So ive decided no more big swings on the tee box, seemed to work great yesterday.

This has really helped my ball striking. When I posted previously about watching video I learned I was taking the club past parallel on every swing.

I've never liked Callaway's, but these are extremely sharp clubs.

I have a fat Winn grip on my putter. It's nice. It has greatly improved my putting from 5-20 ft.

Those are nice grips. One of my regular playing partners just got one and loves it.

ETA: And to echo, from what I've seen and experienced the fat putters really help for short to mid-range because they take out any flaws caused by tense wrists. However, I've found it much harder to make longer putts and control speed.

It sounds weird, but might be worth a try. You'll stand over the ball thinking your'e going to whiff, but I have yet to have that happen. The mentality of this is just hit it to the hole. Seeing the hole allows my muscles to just do what is visibly necessary to get it there.

The other thing was how good the short games were. So i went out and spent 3hrs practicing; 30 mins on the range and the 2 1/2 hrs on chips, bunkers and putting. When you watch a pro drain 9/10 from 12 ft you realize how much work you need on your short game

I have been playing decent this year except my driver is all over the place. Been using a Taylor Superfast for the last 2 years. Last week in my league I was getting good distance but did not hit one fairway which led to a bad score. Saturday I was going out to play and was looking in my garage and found my old Taylor 360TI driver. So I took out the superfast and put it in. It was unreal...after using the 460 head my 360 looked like a 3 wood at address. In turn my swing seemed way more in control and I was striping it right down the middle. Distance was a little shorter but I have been so wild off the tee I did not care at all. Playing from the middle of the fairway all day was a joy that I am not used to. Shot and 42-40 which is a good score for me.

I read an article in one of the golf magazines that had similar results. They had amateurs hit balls with 3 woods and 4 woods, and most were hitting the 4-woods much straighter and just as long (even longer in some cases).

More bad news from this weekend...the swing change has brought a whole new miss into play. With my old setup, I hit it straight with a slight fade and when I missed that fade ended up a slice. Since I was generally aimed down the left center, not a big deal and I rarely worried about any trouble left. Now, when I miss it could be a pull (not getting inside the ball enough but square/closed face at impact), hook (too much from the inside with square/closed face) or revert back to the old swing and miss right. I spent all day Sunday with no clue where to aim. I feel confident it will improve with more work, but damn that was frustrating on a very tight golf course.

Starting to get back. Arm feeling better and my half wedges always are my nemesis but have shot 80.80.81 now and feel better.

after my Sunday round and a couple beers me and a buddy played a quick 9 on the back from the tips. 3632 yards. Was a little intimidating. I shot the same score as I did earlier that day from 3300. Lol

These kids are unreal. In one match, an OSU freshman shot 64...only to lose by a hole to a UA freshman...who birdied 6 of the last 7 holes.

a friend of mine went to a d1 school to play golf and he's pretty good he's on the other side of scratch. I asked him if he ever thought about giving it a try turning pro.he says his senior year he qualifies for the championship. He said he thought he played pretty well and after the first or second day he was 2 or 3 under. He's tied for like 144th. He said right then and there he knew no way he was going to give it a go.

Good point. If you're playing in the mud and/or slop its not hard to slide around a bit. That said, the best golfer I play with regularly plays in flip flops by choice.

The newer ones are much better designed aesthetically. I bought the Sensei- they are a sneaker-like golf shoe. Extremely light and comfortable. They are not waterproof. They have a new shoe called the "Lyt" that I'll probably be getting as the Sensei's need to be replaced.

I had no adjustment to the minimalist shoe. If you walk they are very comfortable. You can get a slightly better sense for the feel of the green underfoot.

New Balance also makes a minimalist golf shoe.

I bought my kid the Truelinkswear Padwans last year for golf ---and now he basically wears those as his daily shoe.

I'd recommend Truelinkswear...but don't like the design of the shoe on Woot.

Worth $50?

I see that now. Aesthetically, that shoe isn't as bad as the one I was thinking of. But it has a much bigger toe box that you are used to. That's part of the barefoot experience - in that your toes are supposed to spread out which allows for better posture and balance during athletic activity (supposedly).

Is it worth $50? YES.

However personally I don't like Trues "traditional" styling. if I were looking for a traditional styled golf shoe I probably look at Eccos or Nike or Adidas or something along those lines. For a "newer" modern styling I really like Truelinkswear: Proto; Sensei and Lyt models.

And let me just reiterate...the toe box on my Sensei is larger than on a normal golf shoe and from the pictures on their website they don't look that "wide".

I really like their shoes..and highly recommend them. You'd might get some "nice clown shoes" comments with the $50 pair...you'd probably get "those shoes look cool" with the Proto, Sensei or Lyts.

I have a pair. They're pretty nice. Zero heel padding though so they do feel weird.Eta: I bought the clown shoe ones b/c they were super cheap. I wear them with my regular golf group but that's about it. Have gotten a few looks if I have them on in public (hitting grocery store after round or whatever).

The Sensei shoes don't look like clown shoes. They are more like sneakers. But the toe box is wider in real life than what it appears from the pictures on the web site. It's not obnoxiously wide...and they don't look like orthopedic shoes either. I'm just letting you know what to expect. They are very light. Very comfortable. I am sold on the shoes.

The tour model looks more like a clown shoe...especially with the black and white leather...it makes the toe box more pronounced. Performance-wise I'm sure it is a great shoe. I think Ryan Moore wore them on tour - he's probably in the lyts this year - but not sure about that.

One of the reasons I went with a minimalist shoe is that I have knee issues. And had to play golf with a knee brace. In Boise, that's fine early season but in the summer when it is 100 degrees out wearing some brace just isn't going to happen.

The first round I played in True shoes, I felt no knee pain at all throughout and after. Since, I've gone to minimalist shoes in pretty much everything I wear - unless I'm dressing up. Even hiking and backpacking with a 40lb pack- I'm wearing minimalist shoes (not boots).

I'm sure there's some theory behind it all like- if humans were meant for arch support and heel padding they would have evolved it. For me it's more simple- these types of shoes are more comfortable- I like being barefoot as much as possible too- my knee doesn't hurt when I play. Your situation may be different.

a friend of mine went to a d1 school to play golf and he's pretty good he's on the other side of scratch. I asked him if he ever thought about giving it a try turning pro.he says his senior year he qualifies for the championship. He said he thought he played pretty well and after the first or second day he was 2 or 3 under. He's tied for like 144th. He said right then and there he knew no way he was going to give it a go.

Same sorta thing for me. I was a plus 5 in college. Turned pro and went to a Carolina mini tour. Shot 66-65 in my first tourney. Won $32 for finishing 11th. For 7 straight tournaments I never shot a round over 70. Grand total winnings, just over $300. And that was in the days of persimmon and balata. It's a different world at that level. I don't regret for one second giving it up. Hard way to make a living.

I still play my circa 1995 Cleveland purple irons that Corey Pavin used to pimp. I love them. Every year I say I'm buying a new set, and every year I talk myself out of it after playing with my current set.
