OFFICIAL 2014 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

  • It was another sloppy day for the offense. The Dolphins are experiencing growing pains learning an up-tempo scheme under first-year coordinator Bill Lazor. This was one of those sessions where the Dolphins had poor throws, numerous drops and offensive line issues. I counted at least five drops by Miami receivers in what was probably the worst practice by the offense since the opening day of training camp. "I obviously haven’t looked at the film yet, but my instincts tell me that the defense had the upper hand," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin admitted.
  • The center position is starting to become a major concern. For the second day in a row,Shelley Smith had two errant snaps to quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The second bad snap was a ground ball that skipped past Tannehill in team drills. Soon after, backup centerNate Garner finished practice on the first team. Miami tried several different combinations in an effort to find the best five on the line. In addition to Garner, rookie guard Billy Turneralso worked with the first-team offense at times on Wednesday.
  • The play of the day goes to Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline. Early in team drills Hartline beat cornerback Jamar Taylor deep for a 60-plus yard touchdown reception. Miami’s offense protected Tannehill enough for him to throw a pretty deep ball that Hartline caught in stride. To Taylor’s credit, he responded with an interception of Tannehill and had a couple of tipped passes.

It's clear the offense is heading for possible bottom 5 with a clear path for cellar dweller if things get much worse. Center position is going to be painful. This team knew Lazor was the OC since Jan/Feb, lots of OTAs, mini camps, what has been happening over at One Atlantis Way? They KNEW Pouncey was not gonna be well since before the summer, what was the hold up on the surgery?

Hartline is always an after note, another year of about round 14 on his ADP. Year 1 under Philbin-128 targets, 74 rec, 1,083 yds, Year 2 under Philbin with the same QB-134 targets, 76 rec 1,016 yds, Year 3 with the same HC/QB combo and he is being drafted like a flyer. I love Landry and believe he is th along term answer for Miami at one of the 2 spots now being held by Wallace and Hartline but I also feel like Wallace will be gone sooner or later as Landry makes it impossible to keep him off the field or simply a better option at under $1M a season vs Wallace and his staggering $17M.

Good camp report, really put a spotlight on lingering questions here.

Incredible to watch or think about the BB/Brady/Gronk/Revis pow wow going on at one side of the field with the 5 star General himself watching closely while the rest of the team is down the other side of the field doing special teams. You could paint it so many ways. On one hand he could really be shielding his 3 top players from anything they would be subjected to on special teams or even just keeping them involved in something so they weren't totally bored.

But I also like to think BB gets some satisfaction out of some of the little things in life and maybe just maybe he wanted to play with his toys for a minute like any kid likes to play with his toy soldiers.

Yeah I'm sure none of those thoughts is really valid but the observation or blurb the writer decided to put in the camp report was great on their part.

Stock Market Report: Vikings Training Camp

Adam Thielen, WR: In looking through my notes, I'm trying to find one pass that Adam Thielen dropped, and I can only come up with one. Seriously, this kid catches everything. Everything. Low, high, behind him, way ahead of him, it doesn't seem to matter. He went from buried on the depth chart on day one to working in with the first team, in four days. He's been impressive, and right now the chances of him making the roster are legitimate.
Jerick McKinnon, RB: Here's the deal with McKinnon...he's got all the tools to be a very good starting running back in the NFL. From his work ethic, to his attitude, combined with his natural ability, McKinnon has the tools to be a a number one on the depth chart guy. Speaking of his tools...his speed is something that's difficult to describe if you haven't seen it first hand. I tweeted this out the other day, but it bears repeating--I never sawRandy Moss in a training camp setting, but I have seen Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson. I am convinced McKinnon could beat both of them in a flat run. He's got a lot to learn, but he's had a pretty good camp so far.
Sell: Jerick McKinnon overtaking Matt Asiata. As much as I like McKinnon, and as much as I think he will be the primary backup to Peterson eventually, it isn't going to be soon. Matt Asiata, who I called an ill fit for Turner's offense, has looked very good so far. He's hitting the hole and running with authority, getting yards in chunks between the tackles. He also looks good catching passes out of the backfield, which is the one thing I thought was his Achilles Heel.

I might be making the trip up to See the Saints at TC in WVA - anyone have any tips in terms of how to watch a training camp?

I go regularly when TC is here in NO but the best I can ever do is put together observations, there seems so much going on.

Anyone have any tips or habits as far as trying to see what is really going on or what will be happening during the season?

Things getting better and better for Landry. Forget the combine, kid is tearing it up at camp, looks great in this offense which is suited for him, way ahead of most rookies at this stage. In 2015 I really like Landry and feel he will be the WR1 in Miami within 2-3 years. I do no expect Wallace back next year. I do feel Hartline will remain the consummate WR2 and THill security blanket until Philbin is no longer the HC.
