so, was it a 'fix'?
Soccer has a ton of corruption. The likelyhood that the home country's game was fixed to lose is 0.

The likelyhood that it was fixed in this way to ruin these guys lives forever is -100000%
Exactly, these players are the anti-Pele. They are the biggest failures in the history of Brazil. Neymar is lucky to have missed this game.
Big Phil at kickoff: Jo, I have some bad news -- you're going to sit this one out so I can start six defensive players.

Jo: weeps for ~29 minutes.

If Jo had started, we would have known the fix was in.

In the 1982 World Cup, Italy's Claudio Gentile fouled Argentina's Diego Maradona 23 times ... in Italy's 2-1 victory.

Okay, now that the cream has obviously risen to the top, lets look at tomorrow and the finals.

Without DiMaria, I definitely prefer the Dutch to advance tomorrow. I have no idea why Argentina such favorites here. Yeah, Messi is great, sure. But he cannot do it all.

RvP may not be as huge a miss as many may think, if he is not available, but I think he will be. He's been mediocre of late, and Hollands attack comes more in waves.

But, which opponent would the Germans rather face? That is a tougher question.

A lot depends on the health/availability of their opponents. As good as Germany has been, they have been very fortunate since the start of this tournament in that all of their players have been available, sans a Hummels absence which really didn't have much effect.

If both teams are at full strength, you have to think the Germans would fare better vs the Dutch. But Argentina missing a few key players. Hmmmmmm.

I'm obviously biased as I am a fan of Germany, and have the view of a punter more than a fan for sure. German victory today is ####ed for betting, whomever they play they will be getting a lot of action.

I do think Germany wins this WC though. And I think they beat the Dutch in the finals. I'm rooting for this, not because they match up better with the Dutch, but rather, I'd rather see Brazil and Argentina play in the consolation game.

And if anyone likes action, almost every consolation game sees goals, believe every game since the mid 70s over 2.5.

For tomorrow's game, I'm playing the Dutch to advance at + odds, the dutch to win outright, and will play for the dutch to advance in ET and PKs.

But one thing I'll definitely be on is cards - should be a ton more yellows thrown tomorrow than today, as the game was without doubt by the 20'. With cards resetting, and both sides not opposed to diving - look for cards to be out. http://worldreferee.com/site/copy.php?linkID=565 With 4 and 5 cards already in previous matches, I've already played a few props on 4+ cards.

Will be very, very interesting to see who gets the final, as I don't think that's been announced yet. Could be Webby. I honestly think the best referee in the world is Rizolli from Serie A, but I do think we see Webb in the finals.

Oh, and I just read that this is the #### ref that threw Nani a straight red vs RM a few years back in CL match. ####er #### sucker

In the 1982 World Cup, Italy's Claudio Gentile fouled Argentina's Diego Maradona 23 times ... in Italy's 2-1 victory.
This game is infamous in soccer lore.

The best part was that Gentile got a yellow in the first minute and then just hacked away for the rest of the game. Maradona got a yellow for complaining to the ref about constant infringement.

Twas a different game back then.

James was fouled six times in the Q-finals and people raised hell (admittedly they were cynical fouls -- but nowhere near 23 of them). Even Howard "see no evil" Webb would get the red card out well before 20.

Probably something about two mismatched cops.
I think they were searching masons once.
I think Brazil's vig shot their seer D1
:lmao: Probably because Hulk said he was a BG 451 times during D1.
He sure looked like a PJV out there today.
a year ago I wouldn't have got this:growing:

It could never happen today imo. I don't know how much you follow stats but 23 fouls in one game by one player is extrodinarily high (like the highest I have ever seen and I follow stats pretty in depth).

And then 23 fouls by one player on the exact same opponent? It never happens from my observance. Maybe you have seen different but it would utterly shock me.

There is good reason this game is built into soccer's lore. Here is a snippet from one of ten thousand stories on the game

Watching the complete compilation clip of Gentile against Maradona is oddly hypnotic. The dedication to man-marking and the referee-may-care attitude showed a player who was not to be stopped in this morally ambiguous task he committed 23 fouls on Maradona. Gentile set about his work with a demented doggedness the air of a man who had one job, and knew exactly how to do it. Of course, by any modern interpretation of the rulebook, Gentile would not have been allowed past the third foul before a caution, at the very least, was brandished. But in the 1982 footballing universe, this tactic was allowed, and Gentile pushed it to its limits.

To give an example for just how high 23 fouls is by one player in one game (and for now ignoring the fact that the 23 were on the same player), UEFA has statistics for the most fouls committed.

Matija Nastasic for Serbia committed a confederation high 23 fouls, which was the most in UEFA.

This 23 fouls was for the entire round of qualifying, which for Serbia was 10 games.

Man Darke and McManaman threw shade on Brazil for two hours straight. They are amazing the worst.
Fixed
:fishing:
Darke is a very solid pro but he is a waste on US games since he lacks so much knowledge of the US game.

Macca is just god awful. A good color guy in soccer is so hard to get.
I love them both. That was so much fun to listen to.
Yep.

I fully expected Brazil to lose today by three goals...but they just completely fell apart on defense. Unreal.
:lmao:

Germany was the pretty clear favorite over a full strength Brazil based on their play. Without Neymar and Silva?
I count only 9 game decided by 3 or more goals in this entire world cup -- and you were fully convinced one of the best squads on the planet would lose by 3? Hopefully you laid every penny you had on Germany if you were convinced.
The squad Brazil played with today is not one of the best on the planet, not even close. They have struggled mightily in this tournament and were without their best defender and striker. I was very pessimistic about Brazil's chances today.

You can believe that or not, I don't really care.
Sorry, I'm probably nitpicking here but you've now changed your tune to "I was pessimistic". I have no doubts that you were pessimistic. I thought Brazil would lose too. But there's multiple football fields between "I don't like their chances" and "I fully expect them to lose by three". The latter is just ridiculous. If you really thought that then, again, I really hope you put down a ton of money on Germany or you missed possibly the greatest investment opportunity of your life.
Did he even go out on that limb here before the game?

Nope. I am not remotely interested in hearing English bias every time I watch a game. Neither of these guys are capable of calling a game neutrally.
So you're why we're getting Gus Johnson.
Not really, my vote would go to Ray Hudson or Phil Schoen. That said, Gus is better than Ian in my book. Not by a lot.
HFS :lmao:

The Germans are attacking quickly with strength, lightning-speed, and precision. It's almost like there should be a German word for that exact type of thing...

Mjolnirs is going to have fun with this one.
Indeed

What do you think the chances are that at halftime not a single German purchased any concessions. I'm thinking everything would have tasted like spit.

Brazilian superiority in soccer was a pipe dream; Brazilian dominance in MMA is in the past; Brazilian women are God's greatest creation.

Good at what captainwise?
He's well respected by his teammates and coaches. He's very talented, smart at the game and levelheaded. I can't find anything to confirm it, but I've heard announcers state that he has never been ejected through a red or double yellow. That all adds up to a guy that should make a pretty good leader on the field.

He's pretty good at lifting cups over his head

Is it really worse losing 1-7 than 1-2?
WAIT A SECOND!

Is this proper numerical prose in the world of soccer fandom to refer to box score results with the losing score first? ... or is Rohn Jamo a lifelong resident of Long Island who lacks a little awareness? ... or other?

Futbol, I will not carry this baggage.

I like him, so it's nothing against him, it's something that I've wondered. Schweinsteiger seems the more vocal leader and getting guys under control or in their place on the field.

That's because, like young Frankenstein, Schweinsteiger must have a big Schwanstucker.
