The Eagles' pass catchers had a rough evening catching the ball in the Birds' 27-16 loss to the Panthers on Sunday night, sinking Sam Bradford's passer rating along with the Eagles' chances of knocking off undefeated Carolina.
Chip Kelly took notice -- it was hard not to -- and was unflinching in his evaluation of his receivers after the game.
"I don't have an answer for [the drops], but we did have too many for us to be successful," Kelly said "I thought [bradford] threw the ball well, threw with authority tonight, but the drops obviously hurt big time. We've got to get an answer for that."
Kelly was adamant in his appraisal of Bradford's performance against the Panthers. Bradford finished the night 26-of-46 for 205 yards and interception, which came on Matthews' first drop of the night.
"I thought Sam did a nice job," Kelly said. "I thought he threw the ball well, I thought he put the ball on people. We've just got to catch it and help him out."

Mathews has consistently shown that he has acceleration and an extra gear that Murray simply doesn't. That was evident on Mathews' 63-yard touchdown run, as he burst through the hole and wasn't caught from behind.
While Mathews ran down the field and eluded one final defender trying to catch him, I thought back to Murray's 24-yard run down the left sideline against the Saints. Murray was caught from behind, and I still believe Mathews would've probably outran him.
Tonight, it was the reverse, and I don't think Murray would've reached the end zone as Mathews did."

Honestly thought Bradford looked pretty decent last night. Accuracy still not quite where we'd like, but he looked far more comfortable in the pocket (at least, before that last drive), and made generally good decisions. That was one of the leagues better defenses and the offense looked pretty good at times, despite at least 5 drops and 3-5 more passes an elite WR might catch.That loss was NOT on Bradford, and there's certainly no shame in losing a relatively close game on the road to an undefeated opponent

Yes, that was one of the worst games I have ever seen a wide receiving corps play. But that doesn't excuse Bradford. He won't throw deep, and he's not accurate enough on the short stuff to make up for it. If he's improved since Week 1 (and I think he has, FWIW), it's only because the bar he set initially was so low.

no offense, but are you watching the games? On the short routes, Bradford repeatedly hit his guy in the hands. With exception to the first drive slant route that was *a little behind Matthews-but still 100% catchable, he was spot on, on all of his short to intermediate routes. Re: the deep passes, who do you propose he throws to? No one gets open and on the rare times that Bradford bites the bullet and throws it up for his WR to make a play, Austin drops it, Cooper stops his route or drops it, Huff drops it and Matthews drops it. Why would he throw it deep? Riley Cooper is his best option deep. Say that out loud. The whole "he wont throw deep" narrative is complete and total garbage. There's no threat of anything deep on this team, period. It's like saying "This team never runs outside runs/ sweeps" when their RB is Mike Tolbert. This isn't Madden where just cause a guy runs a 93 he's a "deep threat". Our game is short to intermediate routes and running the ball. If you have skill guys dropping a quarter of the throws you, and any other team that runs a similar offense, will be in trouble.
Only in Philly will you see guys drop 8-9-10 passes and the QB actually gets blamed. The blame for what you're seeing now falls on whoever decided not to match or exceed Maclin's offer. He was a culture guy, a good guy, and a nice young WR that we needed. You can't let him walk.

Letting Maclin go, and drafting Agholor in the first, has severely impacted the offense. Agreed.

Yep. I dint Bradford is Aaron Rodgers but no way was last night on him. I can't ever remember a WR week in and week out dropping balls like Mathews has. He's a #3 at best. Huff is miscast. I could go on. This core is horrible and it's all on Chip the GM. He won 20 games with mostly Ried's guys. I'm not going to list them but the WRs this team passed up to draft Mathews and huff will make you throw up in your mouth.
Secondly, I thought Mr. Culture Chip was the type of coach that plays the best man. I don't see how anyone can say Murray should be out touching Mathews 3-1 or more. Part of it is Murray's skill set and part of it is play calling but it's clear Ryan makes things happen. One stinking touch after his TD. Criminal.
Third, for a guy who with sports science and military thinking and blah blah blah, how can this team week in and week out make mistakes pee wee players don't make? Where is the discipline? Smoothies and sleep monitors ain't cutting it.
ETA: I am gonna list some guys taken after Huff--John Brown, montcrief, martavious Bryant.

Every snap of every game, but that's not the issue here.
Look, all I'm trying to say is it's not completely on our WR corps. Bradford didn't throw deep in St. Louis, either (read the Barnwell piece on him at Grantland) and he damn sure had better deep-ball threats than Riley Cooper there. And if you can't do that - and the defense knows you can't do it - you have to have otherworldly short and intermediate accuracy to be successful in the NFL. And Sam doesn't.
Alex Smith's group of WRs last year were every bit as bad as the Birds have this year ... and he averaged 1.7 AY/A more than Bradford has managed so far under Chip. Is it really too much to expect Alex Smith-type stats out of a guy Chip traded away our starter and a second-round pick to get?

Sadly, I don't think this is true. But again, who do you expect him to go deep to? Forget the fact that his WR's are not getting open-who do you trust to make a play at the ball? There are plenty of guys that don't get wide open in this league, but they at least know how to high point the ball, or use their body to box out a defender. No one on this team can do either of those things. Cooper is probably his best deep threat and the dude jumps up on every pass reception in order to catch the ball in his stomach. Every pass play, he jumps up unnecessarily and then falls over. It looks like junior high, back yard football and its ridiculous. You want to knock some of Bradford's decision making in the redzone, fine. But I just don't get how people are dogging him for not going deep when he has the athletic equivalent of me running around out there.

You guys should calm down. The winner of the division is going to be 8 - 8 this year, mark it down. There is still a lot of football left to be played. It might be a good idea to activate Sanchez though....if I recall, he was pretty good last year, at least from a fantasy perspective. He was putting up 20 -25 points every week. Sam the man has had 3 weeks so far where he has failed to put up even 10 points!!!! Get rid of him.

Yeah that's all well and good. Maybe they win division. Then what? Get annihilated by a decent team fist round. Right or wrong, eagles fans want more. They want progress and so far it looks like the idea to give Chip "the keys to the kingdom" has been a disastrous move by Lurie.

Just because he's had 1 offseason in charge doesn't mean he can pull off a bunch of Madden trades and have Brady and Peterson suiting up. Just because he coached Mariotta in college isn't going to make a terrible team like the Titans give him a franchise QB.
It's easy to bash him but Andy Reid is in last place, DJAX hasn't been on the field all year and McCoy isn't doing any better than our current RB'S. In hindsight I would he overpaid for Maclin but he hit the lottery with that contract. Chip is 5 games over .500 3 seasons in after inheriting a 4 win team and we are 1 game out of 1st. Sure I wish we were better but you have to find a QB somewhere.

Yes, it was stupid to offer Kelly the GM job as that almost never works out well, but you guys have a good team. There is a lot of talent to work with there.

Let's not get into this Sanchez is better then Bradford talk. I know you mentioned you didn't watch many Eagles games last year but Sanchez was NOT good. He's not going in, we can just put that to rest now.
As for the division, you're right the Giants do have a very tough schedule. They do have the Saints and the Bucs coming up, but those are both road games and I could see them losing one of them. After that their non div games are: Pats, Jets, Dolphins, Panthers, Vikings. Ouch.
I think they could be a couple games up on us in a few weeks but they still don't make me nervous as much as Dallas does. It'll be nice to see Dallas way down the standings once Romo/Dez return. Right now a bunch of betting sites all have it pretty close between Philly and NYG in odds to win the NFC east.

Maxwell has not played well, but as a WHOLE, our DB's are better this year then last year and I'm not sure anyone will argue that. Carrol and Jenkins were here last year but are finally playing fantastic this year. He also brought in Thurmond who is doing well. It seems everyone here expects a home run on every single signing, every single draft pick, every single trade. People say our offense has been "average to bad in EVERY game". Our offense was not average against the Saints, yet the response is about the 2 picks. Not everything is going to go great on every aspect of the game and to have those expectations is just insane. Overall his moves as a GM have been positive as a WHOLE. Remember, this defense improvement is on Chip the GM too, but fans seem to only focus on Chip the GM's offensive moves.

You might be right. 20/20 hindsight sure is a nice thing though, isn't it? At the time it was a good signing, and I STILL to this day am very happy we have both. Mathews as the only back, getting 25 carries a game scares the crap out of me and Sproles is a good change of pace 3rd back. Not happy with Murray's production, but still think it was the right move, especially at the time it was done.

I don't know/care which back is better but I'll say this; for Mathews to gash Carolina for a 63 yard TD run 3:00 minutes into the third quarter and then get only one more carry the rest of the game is criminal.
ETA: I really thought they run the ball 30+ times a game this year. I've got no idea what this offense is even supposed to be.

I think that's what they want to do, but have been unable to execute. My biggest grip with Kelly's playcalling is constantly "taking what the defense gives them." At some point, they need to start dictating to the defenses and not vice versa. I miss the creative guy the Eagles hired a couple years ago, not this predictable, conservative coach they have now.
Just heard on NFL Network that R Matthews was dealing with a hamstring issue after that.

Re: the failure to be 'run heavy' IMO it's hard when A) PHI has scored 10 first quarter points all year (7 games!) which means they are ALWAYS playing from behind; B) at times teams have stacked the box and dared Bradford/WRs to beat them and C) the OLine has been inadequate at times and awful at others. Negative runs setting up 3rd and 8, etc.
All that being said, offense has been 'vanilla' and the run game was working the last 2-3 games and certainly could've been emphasized more at times.
FWIW Chip said in the presser today Mathews hurt his groin in the second half and Duce was monitoring his snaps.

Agreed, played well until Jared Allen made the LT his ***** on the last drive and had 2 sacks. Bailed out by that PI call. And, yes, Peters has been out almost every game. Struggling to stay on the field.

I think Hardy is running that team already. Every person I've heard speak seems scared to say he did anything wrong. He was pushing coaches and players and all the coaches and execs are saying is that he's a leader and has passion.
Personally, I love it. Cowboys will implode with that kind of "leadership" regardless of what Romo and Dez can bring.
I agree. He's a cancer. Dallas loves rolling the dice on criminals/low character-types. Sometimes it pays off, and sometimes we see why 31 other teams passed.

Regardless of whether or not Hardy is a cancer, he can get after the QB. Our oline better stop him or we give them the path back into the division race. If we beat them (We ####### better) then they are done. They'll be 2-6 and buried with NYG most likely 5-4, us 4-4 and Wash 4-5.

Chip Kelly (who I like overall) has selected three receivers in the first two rounds (in the last two years) - and what do the Eagles have to show for it?
Matthews drops every other ball and runs three yard patterns (translation: can't get separation)
Huff is still an unknown (has done more talking than playing)
Agholor is on a milk carton (at least he is still a rookie - and he is hurt)
Cooper (yes the guy who most want run out of town) is really the only "deep threat" if you can call him that. So why would Bradford throw it deep?

Kelly has made mistakes - who hasn't??
for example, look up BB's record in Cleveland.
I wish people wouldn't be so extreme.
Coach A either "sucks" or is "a genius"
Player B either "is headed to the HOF" or "is headed to the unemployment line".
