Fine line between washy washy and pragmaticConviction is overrated and that includes Bernie, too. I want my presidents to be more pragmatic and willing to change course if the evidence suggests it.
Problem is that most of our politicians change course in favor of what is politically convenient despite what the evidence suggests.roadkill1292 said:Conviction is overrated and that includes Bernie, too. He would have gotten less flack for saying that his first order of business would to be to institute Prima Nocta, than to actual say that.I feel let down that Trump did not explicitly say "Operation *******".

Seems like a Chris Christie move. All of these student protests have created an opening for a "Nixon" type response from one of these candidates, talking about law and order, etc. who will grab the mantel?
The thought is that since both are anti-establishment guys, Ted Cruz will be the winner, and that might just give him the nomination. We'll see.Has anyone made a poll of where carson/trump voters are going to go once they quit the race?

I'm trying to work through that thought....how do anti-establishment votes translate to vote for Cruz? I don't see Trump people sitting out & not voting , to the contrary I think they are highly motivated. I think the thing drawing them to Trump is he's not a pol & he's talking tough about the border & illegal immigration.I think you're reading the situation wrongI honestly think the trump supporters sit out for the most part. These are not smart, sophisticated, politically informed people who are their supporters and they will likely just fade away.
There are exceptions to this I'm sure but anybody with half a brain realizes that a Trump presidency is a complete and utter disaster.
As for Carson supporters, maybe they find another somebody or maybe they follow suit and disappear in the crowd

What was his actual quote? I'm getting a vibe that you're taking him out of context here.QuizGuy66 said:Cruz came out in favor of bombing civilians today. Surely that wouldn't help recruiters to terrorist groups.

Yup. Both sides will be tripping over themselves to get the best line out there. From what I have seen if expect Bernie and Rand to be the most responsible but who knows. The race to become the biggest hawk is about to get even more interesting.
We bomb civilians all the time. Cruz is just advocating for the status quo.QuizGuy66 said:Cruz came out in favor of bombing civilians today. Surely that wouldn't help recruiters to terrorist groups.

The pundits framed it that way because nobody else has a plan. Until these other "serious people" have a plan, bombing them (which we do anyway) and taking all their oil sounds a lot better than it did yesterday. We have to expect that Paris will have a significant impact on the race. Some pundits this morning think it will help Trump. I seriously hope not. I'd like to think that the public, including Republicans, react to these situations by looking to serious people...but I don't know.

I agree. If your description of Trump's supporters is accurate, I don't think that's a good reason to discount Trump's chances of winning.
I'll find exact quote but basically said we should increase "acceptable range of civilian casualties" in bombing (referring to groups like ISIS). Nice red meat thing to say but the sort of quote that those groups put in their recruitment videos. What was his actual quote? I'll try the question another way....what in his actions has said "anti-establishment" that one of these anti-establishment types would hop on board? Everything in his actions scream "anti-dem" which isn't the same thing....not even close. His voting record seems on par with the GOP ("yeah sequester, screw compromise" etc). He hasn't gone after anyone personally in this race, and has gone out of his way to complement Trump so I think there's a thought that he is positioning himself as the 2nd choice to Trump supporters should his numbers start to decline.
In these debates recently, he has been the one screaming about the media, immigration and has been getting a lot of headlines from these last 2 debates.
Everything is fluid, but I'm starting to think he could be emerge in these polls as he knows the policies, is angry, so he's a smarter choice than Carson/Trump for these angry voters, but at the same time, as much as he says he's not establishment, can mix in some of his experience in office to show he has made a difference, and can be trusted as opposed to Rubio/Bush.
I could be wrong, and Rubio has been the other guy in this race who seems to dominate in the debate, but I'm starting to think these 2 are the ones standing at the top come January as I still have a hard time believing that Carson / Trump will still be riding high as their lack of policy knowledge will eventually be their undoing.
My favorite position to date is being "pro military" while voting for sequesters etc.My post was a response to the question where Trump supporters would go when/if he drops out of the race and I tend to think that people who are currently supporting Trump are the type of people who the celebrity loudmouth appeals to and I do not see a natural alternative to him for themHas anyone ever gotten elected by appealing to smart, sophisticated, politically informed people with half a brain?Righetti said:I honestly think the trump supporters sit out for the most part. Man I thought his fade was starting but between this poll and now the Paris attacks which I think will give him a big boost, there might be no stopping him.Trump surging. At 42% in latest Reuters poll among likely Republican voters- and this was taken BEFORE Paris:

Nope, but I would take a guy trying to figure out what is best for our country in the first one year & going from there because he believes America is exceptional. Rather than same o, same o. imoLet's say he has a good heart, doesn't really want the power, and thinks you should work if possible instead of having welfare.
So what? Are these your only qualifications for being President?
Getting through medical school undoubtedly takes smarts and hard work. Do you feel smarts and hard work in one field mean you will be equally qualified and successful in an entirely unrelated field with zero experience?
