Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (1 Viewer)

Marco is not presidential... guy is a mumbling jittery mess... has some good thoughts but doesn't exactly resonnate and inspire getting them across

To paraphrase George Carlin talking about Bill Clinton... I think the appeal of Trump is, we know he's full of #### but he's up front about it.

As opposed to the rest of this collection of utter utter B.S artists who will say or do anything to feed this lust for more advancement. I will say Carson I wouldn't lump in that manner but he just doesn't inspire.

Cruz, how no one goes for the Obama/Birther Jugular, unless they're waiting for a bigger stage, befuddles me. Also looked horrendous with that Goldman Sachs stuff... a paperwork error on a million dollar payment from a New York company. Much to be mined there.

Christie is a disaster in a fact check and his attempts to hide from his record are laughable.

Bush looked better, but he's out of gas.

Kasich no traction.

Rubio does not read well, seems like a wimp.

 
Trump - Escaped this one; not a good showing but he'll be fine

Cruz - Beat up, bad. He'll have a lot of sound bites to deal with this week.

Rubio - Fumbled too many times

Carson - After thought

Christie - Forced, please stop/go away

Bush - Not bad but too late

Kasich - not good enough to make a difference

I have a slightly different take.

I don't think Trump escaped. I thought he did more than fine. He did get embarrassed by Cruz on the birther issue. But aside from that I think he resonated really well with GOP voters, especially when he owned the anger issue and spent a lot of time on trade and China (which are huge issues with working class voters).

I though Cruz was doing okay until Rubio basically dropped some bombs on him. But, Cruz danced with the devil so to speak when it comes to Trump and I think that in and of itself makes it a good night for him.

Ultimately...I don't think Cruz or Trump did any major damage with their attacks on each other. So...they basically elevated themselves as being the de facto two choices for the GOP voters in my mind.

So...I see those two maintaining their first tier status.

The big question is what happens to the voters for each of the other candidates...Where do they go and when do they jump ship?

I don't see anybody beyond Trump, Cruz or Rubio getting any traction based on any performances in this debate.

 
Sadly, the insane rhetoric you heard tonight was mostly a reflection of current Republican voters and their positions on the issues. These ### clowns wouldn't be pushing this slop if it wasn't what their voters want to hear.

It's almost scary.

 
Trump - Had some rough patches, but nothing of consequence IMO

Cruz - A few good spots early on, but got hammered (and not in a good way) later on

Rubio - Once he dropped the "Obama is failing us / has failed us" shtick as a response to every question, he seemed to really improve. But it took him north of 90 minutes to do that.

Carson - Donezo. Doing it for the book sales.

Christie - Had the one zinger towards Rubio, but a lot of same-old same-old. And that same-old stuff hasn't exactly been a winning formula thus far.

Bush - Had some good moments, one of his better debates (if not his best) so far. But he's gotten buried so deeply by the rest of the field, one good performance isn't going to change anything. I'm not really sure what would have to happen to turn his campaign around.

Kasich - The adult in the room. Delved into the issues instead of just attacking others, and most of what he said was pretty reasonable. In other words, he doesn't stand a chance.

Here's the actual quote. Probably my favorite line of the night.

TRUMP: I stood yesterday with 75 construction workers. They're tough, they're strong, they're great people. Half of them had tears pouring down their face. They were watching the humiliation of our young ten sailors, sitting on the floor with their knees in a begging position, their hands up.

And Iranian wise guys having guns to their heads. It was a terrible sight. A terrible sight. And the only reason we got them back is because we owed them with a stupid deal, $150 billion. If I'm president, there won't be stupid deals anymore.

One guy continues to stand out among the rest. We'll see what happens over the next 4-6 weeks. This is a 3 horse race with Trump-Cruz-Rubio...straw poll right after the debate on CNN in SC ran 36-33-26 out of 120 votes. No one else came close, Christie polled ZERO!

These folks polling at less than 5% need to disappear, they have had 6 months to drum up noise and most haven't made a tenth of the noise that the Donald has so please just go away and stop wasting air time.

-Rubio sounds like a whiny kid who won the history project at school and was made school President by the faculty without ever having to actually run vs other students. A hall monitor if you will and nobody likes those types.

-Cruz is just way too abrasive and wiped his ### with the state of New York and smiled about it on TV, that's the truth.

-Trump just continues to land blows and gain in the polls. He got rave reviews on the early polls and returns, he continues to build momentum.

 
Drudge polling Trump at about 55%, Cruz 30%, Rubio 6%...

It doesn't get much more conservative than Drudge so folks saying GOP conservatives don't like Trump, it's total hogwash. Trump will be the nominee for the GOP, and he knows it.

Yup its done. Cruz may squeak by in Iowa but that means nothing. Trump will dominate the rest. Can't believe he's going to go wire to wire here.
