Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

I agree that a lot of the "old rules" don't apply to Trump and that's why his GOP competitors have had a hard time attacking him, particularly because they didn't seem to take the threat seriously for a long time.  But Hillary and Bernie have 8 months to figure out the "new rules.'  It's hard for me to believe that there aren't any ways to take Trump down.
It's not just going to be Hillary and Bernie. I figure Obama is going to attack Trump every day, twice a day. Obama will do EVERYTHING in his power to prevent a Trump victory. And he'll goad Trump. Then there's Bill.

Trump has faced amateurs so far. It's going to get real after he wins the nomination.

I agree with this. One of the "new rules" that applies to Trump is that Hispanic Americans are going to vote in numbers in this election at a higher number than ever in history, and they are going to be highly energized and motivated because of Trump. And their disapproval rate of Trump is at 80% or 90%, depending on which poll you believe.
Just like they came out in Nevada against Trump?

Remember how Obama made Trump look like a total idiot back in 2011 over the Birther nonsense? Watch him do that on daily basis. He'll throw out off hand insults as bait, and Trump won't be able to resist himself. Trump will look more and more unpresidential every day. The folks that hate Obama will love every angry reaction that Trump has. But the rest of the nation will look on and think, "Do we really want this guy (Trump)?" and the answer will be a resounding no.

This is going to be so much fun.

David Gergen on CNN just brought up a good point.  The overwhelming majority of the mainstream media is going with the narrative that Rubio won last night's debate.  But the data suggests otherwise.  The largest live poll run by Time Magazine - with 64,000 respondents, had Trump winning by a huge margin - 69% versus 20% for Rubio.  Lots of flaws with online polls, but the sheer numbers here are significant.  http://time.com/4238254/republican-debate-tenth-poll-survey/
It's silly because after the debate, every other candidate's closing argument should have been "you know what?  I don't really belong here.  The guy with the experience, maturity and vision and the guy who should be President is standing right over there.  I hereby drop out and endorse John Kasich"

You're the latest in a long list of people to say this election is going to "fun" or "entertaining". I feel like a Trump/Clinton battle is going to produce an ugly, dispiriting, soul-crushing 5-6 months that will leave us all questioning whether democracy is really worth it.

I agree with you about Kasich having more experience and maturity.  Not so much on the vision.  But here's the thing, the country is looking for strength right now.  And they are sick of the establishment.  The rise of Trump was predictable for anyone paying attention.

I actually agree. My comment was sarcastic. Though I will enjoy that one aspect (Obama trolling Trump.) But in general you're right.

The only way I vote for Trump is if Hillary gets indicated and Bernie is the choice..

If it is Trump vs. Hillary it will be 3rd party for me for the 2nd straight presidential vote. With any luck there will a viable option.

I wonder how Clinton is going to utilize The Big O on the campaign trail. W was unpopular, Gore foolishly ran away from Clinton, and Reagan had health problems. We really haven't seen an incumbent campaign hard for his successor in a long time.

How are you defining "won"?   My impression is that Trump is still likely to win most of the Super Tuesday states, and that last night didn't diminish his chances.

I didn't see last night's debate but I've watched most of the other ones.  And generally, Trump comes across poorly, in my opinion.  But you don't win a Republican debate by appealing to me.  His poll numbers generally seem to go up each time.  That's "winning."
It was about the debate.  Now, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter.

But to most who know how to think, he did not come off well.  Rubio put him on the defensive and he had no answer.

His numbers go up every time because people just don't care.  The GOP right now is not about issues or substance.

Odd thing is, you take away the idiotic statements he has made, take away that what most see as racist and bigotry...his "positions" and how he is not really a republican, how he is not beholden to the far right religious nutbags...he would be appealing to me.  The rest of the stuff though just totally takes him out of the picture with those who are not willing to put a nutcase in the Oval.

She is already made it clear she is running for his third term. Once she has clinched the nomination, he should enthusiastically embrace her candidacy as the one who will preserve his legacy. They should have no problems in working out the details.

There will be 7 "stars" for Hillary Clinton:

Hillary Clinton

Bill Clinton

Barack Obama

Michelle Obama

Chelsea Clinton

Bernie Sanders

Elizabeth Warren

I predict all 7 will speak at the Convention. All 7 will be on the campaign trail (maybe not Warren since she doesn't like to travel.)

Did I miss when Chelsea Clinton's opinion became relevant? Particularly when it involves the election of her mother...?

I predict Corey Booker gets the keynote address.

Honestly Obama had less experience running anything than Trump has before he won and the country hasn't burned down yet. I disagree with a ton he did but Obama figured it out on the job. No reason Trump wouldn't adjust either.

Yes, he must have appointed her SOS just for fun or maybe because he has masochistic tendencies.
The talk at the time was that the Clintons had a lot of clout in the Democratic Party and he was more or less obligated to give her a key appointment. I never understood it but that's what everyone was saying. There was an insinuation that they could've made things difficult if he didn't play ball.

The GOP have to be the dumbest party in existence.  Doing everything they can to stop the guy who's leading their party in the polls by a large margin.  They should go ahead and disband these idiots.

Its because he is not a republican.  He is not conservative at all.  In any way.

Maybe they realize he's not a conservative, has no real workable plans or policies, doesn't have the temperament to be president, has a metric ####-ton of baggage and personal scandals that will be dragged out ad nauseum in the fall, and if elected, would probably cause massive GOP losses in the midterms and possibly marginalize/destroy the party once and for all?

I heard that too, but never seriously bought it as reality - that Obama would have any obligation to the Clintons, unless that he felt that her support was key to the winning the election (and from a practical standpoint, she really had no choice in the matter, if she wanted to have any kind of political future she had to support Obama as the nominee).

All this may be true, but the stupidity was waiting until he was really, really close to getting the nomination before they started their all-out assault on him.  If they wanted to kill his chances, they needed to do it a few months ago.  Right now the most likely scenario is that he's still going to get the nomination, but they'll just be damaging his prospects in the general election.

I think in general there's going to be more "Cinton fatigue" on the Democrat side and more enthusiasm for the republican candidate on the GOP side.

To the contrary. If the Repubs paint Trump as A "liberal", the tag can be transferrd to him in the general election. KNaw what i mean?

I think Trump, like most bullies, will come unhinged if he gets punched back. He's just not used to that. He takes his ball and goes to another deal if he can't get one done in real estate.

Agree. If they really want to stop Hillary, they all should just go ahead and read the giant neon sign on the wall and line up behind Trump.

Yep, this is like a football game where one opponent doesn't take another seriously, and by the time they figured it out, they are down 28-0 with only the 4th quarter left and there isn't enough time to catch up now.  I am not sure I see Trump botching a few onside kicks either , since he seemingly turns every negative into a positive.

I thought you said you were done with predictions because you are wrong the VAST majority of time.

Bernie will undoubtedly support Clinton if she gets the nomination, but considering he's been fighting against things like big money in politics for decades, I'd be pretty surprised if he goes out of his way to do a whole lot of campaigning for her.

Yeah Obama will be a huge help making heart felt endorsements like 'Hillary is likable enough' or 'with what we know now, Hillary did not endanger national security'.  Talk about some great campaign slogans!

The old money country club republican party is dead. They are trying to cling to power but its over for them. The new Republican is socially moderate and fiscally conservative. Donald is ushering in a new era of the party

Socially moderate = Mexicans are rapists and ban all Muslims from the country?
Yep. Because he's a populist he can do whatever's popular. You see it all about Donald really.

So he's for totally preserving SS. Popular.

He's for staying out of the Mideast. Popular.

He's against the ACA but he promises he won't let anyone die in the street. Popular.

He's for shutting off immigration. Popular. Now maybe not everyone is for insulting whole ethnic groups of total deportation but those just are background to his basic immigration position.

Try it out next time you hear him talk. He's not for anything unpopular or any real complexity or policy. He's just for whatever most people want.

He is polling the worst in had to head matchups against Sanders/Clinton...they would rather have somebody else win....of course they risk alienating the base by being so clumsy and not subtle about it...

Donald is fiscally conservative?  Since when?  And this is funny given what republican supporters here have been yapping about over the last year.  Pretty much stull stuck in the socially conservative crap.  Still pro life? Still whining about the gays and blacks and muslims?  Yeah, how very socially moderate.

If Romney had picked Kasich, as some were advocating, instead of Ryan, Kasich would the VP right now....

I just had to get that out there
