OFFICIAL 2016 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

The Kansas City Star reports fifth-round WR Tyreek Hill's ball skills and "top-end speed" have stood out in practice.

Hill was primarily drafted to return kicks, but his receiving has drawn fairly consistent praise. That's all good and well, but doesn't figure to mean much this season for a low-volume offense that lasers in on its top 2-3 targets. Hill is an end-of-bench stash in Dynasty leagues.

According to the Akron Beacon-Journal's Nate Ulrich, Browns second-year UDFA Connor Hamlett had a "stellar spring" and has been "among the most pleasant surprises" at camp.
Ulrich believes Hamlett is in the driver's seat early for the Browns' No. 2 tight end job behind Gary Barnidge. Coach Hue Jackson is expected to use plenty of two-tight end sets in what will likely try to be a run-oriented, ball-control offense. Hamlett stands a mountainous 6'7/259. He was signed as an UDFA by the Jaguars last year, but ended the season on the Browns' practice squad.

I had heard the same from other sources.

Take a look at this training camp report that shows Hamlett is action.  Go to the 50 second point of the video to see.

Mary Kay Cabot and Dan Labbe, cleveland.com Browns beat writers, discuss the news of the day (with a couple fun clips at the end) during Day 4 of Cleveland Browns training camp.
The guy is 6'8 and knows how to use his body to position and you can see how he uses his frame to box out DBs but I have to point out two things.

  1. Starting TE Gary Barnidge is out with a hernia opening up some opportunities
  2. Rookie TE Seth DeValve is also out with a hamstring injury and has yet to see the field
I like what I'm hearing and seeing of Hamlett but feel his opportunities and reps will dry up once both Barnidge and DeValve are back healthy.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn predicts that each of the 49ers' three quarterbacks "will start at least three games" this year.
Cohn obviously isn't sold on Blaine Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick holding onto the starting job for 16 games. He goes as far as to predict sixth-round pick Jeff Driskel will make 2016 starts, presumably at the tail end of a lost year. It's a reminder of the shakiness of San Francisco's quarterback situation. Driskel is a superb athlete worth monitoring in deep Dynasty leagues.

The Newark Star-Ledger believes it would make sense for the Giants to "push the pace" more this season after the offense has run plenty of no-huddle early on in camp.
New coach Ben McAdoo has devoted an 11-on-11 period to the no-huddle in every training camp practice so far. The Giants can't get much faster than they were last year -- No. 2 behind the Eagles in overall pace and No. 4 in seconds per play in neutral game situations -- but this at least indicates McAdoo will continue to be aggressive. This is an offense to target in fantasy.

Thumbs down

On a night when rookie free agent Geronimo Allison continued to impress with his precise routes and soft hands, third-year pro Jeff Janis was digging himself deeper into a hole. Janis has not had a good start to camp and his opportunities seem to be shrinking. It’s a rare night when he gets so open that you actually notice it and when his hands fail him as they did Wednesday night, his prospects fade even further. Maybe Janis will turn it on in the games, which was sort of the case last year, but for someone in his third season he can’t keep having so many negative plays. The worst of his efforts was on a goal-line route in which Rodgers put the ball right into his arms. But as he went to the ground, he let the ball slip through his arms, negating what should have been a short touchdown catch. Janis wasn’t the only one dropping balls –Davante Adams had a bad one over the middle in the red zone – but at least Adams has been making plays. Janis just can’t seem to win enough routes in practice and is putting immense pressure on himself to be great in the games. His special teams play will make it hard to cut him, but if he can’t contribute as a receiver, the Packers are going to have a difficult choice to make.

Bennie Fowler has emerged as the "frontrunner" for the Broncos' No. 3 receiver job.
In related news, Cody Latimer continues to shape up as a bust. Among Denver's sub-package wideouts, Fowler has reportedly been the most "consistent" early in camp. As the Broncos use far more two-tight end than three-receiver sets, Fowlers fantasy impact will be negligible even if he wins the No. 3 job.
