*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

Just got off phone with stepdad in St. Croix. Maria now upgraded to a Cat 5. Looks like a direct hit expected. Even worse, the northeast quadrant of the storm where the winds are strongest probably going to pass directly over the island. We went down there to visit him a few years ago. Most of the construction there is poured concrete. Very little stick-built. Where he's at (Christiansted) there are still structures that look bombed out from when Hugo hit them in the late 80s.

Can't help but worry about him. He's not planning on leaving his waterfront condo. Says if it gets bad he can hide in the upper stairwell of his condo complex. Its fully enclosed. He expects his first floor to totally flood. At least he's moved his valuables, tv, and computer to a second floor hiding place.

He's been there 15 years so I've learned to pay close attention to these storms when they get close. This looks like the worst since he's been there.
This does not sound like much of a plan.  This isn't a tornado that he is dodging for 15 minutes.

Agreed, but I have faith that the structure is sound and he'll be protected. It's an entirely concrete structure. They build them that way because they're in typical hurricane paths.  I'm more concerned about after it passes. He's looking at being without power and water for a bit.

Hugo bombed St. Croix and just left everything flattened with looting (i.e. He might want to procure protection now) and the like after the event.  This looks much worse.  If memory serves, the Bucanneer fared OK in Hugo, so you might want to tell him that though I don't know how close he is to that especially after the fact.

He said there are several shelters that are being advertised as safe. He's aware. Know he doesn't have to work tomorrow as its his day off (Postal worker). Hoping he wises up and gets somewhere that's safer. That said, I know he's stubborn.

Bizarre thing when we visited. The Hugo devastation (1989) was nearly thirty years ago and it's still everywhere. When we visited the cove where Columbus threw down anchor there was a giant yacht on the side of the hill above the road. It's been there since Hugo. As you drove around the island it became a broken record hearing about which gutted buildings were from Hugo. Economy there is really third world. They lost most of the cruise boat business to St Thomas and St John and it had a harsh effect on their tourism.

This was a huge whiff by the models.  The models clearly can't keep up with the wake left behind of Irma/Jose.

Euro had Maria as a 967 at noon...tomorrow.  Hit Dominica an hour or so ago at 924.

They were thinking, maybe 2-3 landfall and got run over.

I'm leaving Thursday to go somewhere, will find out over the weekend I guess after some training.

So not to bog down the thread with my problems, because I don't have any like the folks down there...but I'll just tell you how the govt works.

Boss' Boss:  Did Dr D get his employee evals done (cc me, they are due 15 Oct or so fwiw)?

My Boss:  Dr D?

Me: Got one done, will work on two of remaining four before I leave

Boss' Boss:  Well we think you should take your computer with you to finish these while you're deployed

Me:  First off I'm not working for this agency for the next 45-60 days, secondly I might be going to a place without power, with looting, and I'll be working up to 16 hours a day.  Does this seem like a reasonbable request?  Plus I'm getting inoculations and personal stuff done today and tomorrow.

Boss' Boss (This is a very senior govt official): Yeah, we're gonna need those done on time though. Don't let those left behind down.

Me: This is the most obnoxious request I've ever gotten in 25 years of military/govt work.  There are HR contingency plans that deal with deployment situations, please have your assistant contact HR who will explain what needs to be done.  Basically it will just be shelved until I return or the evals will elevate to my supervisor.  glllllllllllll (I actually put gllllllllllll).

My boss only to me: OMG, lololol

Boss' Boss: I'll look into it, have a safe trip.

Initial reports are of widespread devastation. So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace. My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.

So, far the winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with. The roof to my own official residence was among the first to go and this apparently triggered an avalanche of torn away roofs in the city and the countryside.

Come tomorrow morning we will hit the road, as soon as the all clear is given, in search of the injured and those trapped in the rubble.

I am honestly not preoccupied with physical damage at this time, because it is devastating...indeed, mind boggling. My focus now is in rescuing the trapped and securing medical assistance for the injured.

We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds.

It is too early to speak of the condition of the air and seaports, but I suspect both will be inoperable for a few days.   That is why I am eager now to solicit the support of friendly nations and organisations with helicopter services, for I personally am eager to get up and get around the country to see and determine what's needed.

He said the police rescued him.

:(

All reports above sounds bad. Really bad.

Dominica is a spot I've been dying to get to. Volcanic, rainforests, rich natural environment along with beautiful beaches. By all accounts, an absolutely stunning place to visit and Tourism in earnest had only really just started there.

T&p to the people there. hoping for the best for them... And for the rest of the islands in Maria's path.

confirmed......

It does not help my morning coming in here and reading people comparing Maria to Hugo.  :censored:
I don't think I was comparing. Just noting that Hugo made a direct hit on St Croix. It was the worst in their recorded history. Maria looks like it will put a similar hurt on them. I think you're safer this time around as it looks as if it will turn north away from the mainland, but you never know...

I'm 100% cheering for domestic violence between jose and Maria at sea. Not sure anything like that has ever happened.

OK, maybe not comparing ... just seeing them mentioned together.  This storm is on a different path, but that doesn't mean anything.

Still looks like a direct hit on St Croix, USVI and San Juan, PR. I'm seeing the St. Croix hit around 2am Wednesday. Wonder how weird that will be having it dark out when it slams into the island.
Sorry for another Hugo comparison, but that also hit at around that time and according to my grandmother, it was apparently absolutely terrifying.

Live webcam for Christensted harbor in St Croix, USVI. Surprised to see all the boats still in the harbor just anchored down. Pretty much a lock they aren't there tomorrow morning.
I guess if you have a boat in a hurricane path there really isn't a practical way to move the boat?

I mean those islands are just far enough apart to make travel between them too slow or impractical?

Those boats that washed up on roads in the keys, are they just RIP or can you fix them?

They are better off anchored than docked
Seems its a situation where there's no good option really. If the eye hits them dead-on it probably doesn't matter where you try to put it. I would guess anything not cemented to the ground is gone.

Another random thought. I wonder how this will affect Buck Island. Its an underwater national park. I think maybe the only one of its kind. Spectacular snorkeling. Some of best I've ever seen.

NYT reporting on Dominica here with some pics

ETA...just realized the pics in the NYT article are not from Dominica.  They are Irma aftermath pics from a few different locations that the article also touches upon.

Reading his Facebook post, and then the response of people around the world, gives me hope for humanity. Nothing but love in there.
Lots of "God" in those responses.  I can appreciate the intent, but maybe your god could have not whipped up the hurricane in the first place.

Irma scraped PR and still did a billion in damage.

Had no idea nearly 4 million people in PR.  Would have thought in the 500k 700k range.

We arent ready for this level of disaster.

Cripes... another really big earthquake in Mexico... 7.1 in the state of Puebla.

MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake jolted central Mexico on Tuesday, cracking building facades and scattering rubble on streets in the capital on the anniversary of a devastating 1985 quake.

The quake caused buildings to sway sickeningly in Mexico City and sent panicked office workers streaming into the streets, but the full extent of the damage was not yet clear.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and was centered near the Puebla state town of Raboso, about 76 miles (123 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City.
