***Official 2018 St. Louis Cardinals Thread*** -- Matheny gone (1 Viewer)

Team will wear 1985 throwbacks this Sunday against the Royals.

Doubtful they will bring back the 1985 Busch II turf and configuration.
Don Denkinger has been added to the umpiring crew
"Denkinger 85" Royals jerseys and shirts still make the occasional appearance at Kauffman.

I might have gotten a few digits into dialing Denkinger's home phone number (a local STL radio host read it over the air the Monday after the Series) before thinking better of it and hanging up.

No surprise to see Garcia win. It's the Lyons start that should be scary.
I'm cautiously optimistic that things won't be a disaster based on his Triple-A success this year. 6.22 K/BB and 10.4 K/9 are significantly above career norms.

Bring in Rosenthal in the 8th? Sure.

Double-switch him in to take out the 3-hitter in a 1-run game? No problem.

And then Rosenthal tosses a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

It's not fair. Enjoying every minute of it, but fully aware it's not fair.

Five straight quality starts for Garcia. Deceptive record because of no run support, but he's given the team winnable games every time. I feel like it's selfish to ask for this to continue until Lynn comes back, much less into the pennant race.

Any word on why Seigrist pitched the ninth tonight instead of Rosenthal? I'm all for giving Seigrist more opportunities to pitch in high-leverage situations, but it seemed unusual for Rosenthal to sit out a one-run game coming off a rest day.

(7 hrs ago) Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal was not available to pitch in Monday's game because manager Mike Matheny said Rosenthal was experiencing tightness in his arm, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Matheny said he wanted to give Rosenthal a day off to rest.

"It was one of those days when his arm didn't feel right and we needed to give him a day," Matheny said of Rosenthal. "He was down all day."
Hopefully it is not an injury that they are downplaying.

OK. So hopefully they knew Rosenthal needed one more day off, but didn't want the Twins to know ahead of time that Rosenthal wouldn't be pitching.

Small potatoes compared to this FBI thing.

I'm pretty sure both smoke and mirrors were used tonight.

Did like the ground out-single-double play 9th from Rosenthal. And seeing him on the mound throwing gas.

What's gotten into Heyward?
He's handling pitches up in the strike zone much better than he was earlier in the season. He's been getting hits on knee-high stuff, but now he's getting extra-base hits on stuff above the waist instead of hitting soft outs in the air. That upper-deck home run was off a pitch he was popping out to the second baseman in April.

He seems to be less concerned about working counts. If he likes a pitch, he goes after it. (I haven't checked the numbers on this; anecdotal). Last year the Braves moved him up in the order and expected him to take a lot of pitches to run up opponent pitch counts. A good idea on paper, but not Heyward's style.

Even better news is he's everything we were told he would be on defense. Outstanding range, sticky glove.

Hopefully Hayward keeps it up - was a little disappointed in Jhonny "Double Play Ball" Peralta the other day. He needs to get that out of the system.

Last night's win was fueled by a backup infielder's first major league home run, and the winning run was scored on a bad throw from the infield to home plate.

It's like someone triple-dog-dared the team into winning in as many unlikely ways as possible. Like having Pete Kozma on the roster, for example.

Fantastic double play started by Kolten Wong last night - turned the game around.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a first-round pick is demonstrating a lot of talent at the MLB level, but Kolten Wong's improvement this season has been a blast to watch. I'm sure there will be skeptics running in here to say it's not really improvement faster than you can type "BABIP", but he's driving the ball more on offense, and as you referenced with the DP he started last night, his glove is improving.

So Pat Hoberg blows a completely obvious call last night on the foul ball that cost the game for the Cards last night and ejects Maness almost immediately for the first time in Maness' career.

He then follows it up tonight behind the plate with a completely atrocious strikezone that hasn't been consistent for both teams and blows a 3rd strike call that allows a 3 run double for the Cubs to take the lead. Oh, and then ejects both Molina and Matheny.

Nice.

In a perfect world, Wainwright is healthy as is Jaime (ok, maybe a dream world, but humor me).

Who would you take out of the starting rotation from below after what we've seen from Carlos and Jaime this year as well as the rest of those guys?

Wainwright

Martinez

Wacha

Lynn

Jaime

Lackey

I know it seems Lackey since his numbers aren't quite as good as the rest (the only one with an ERA over 3, sitting at 3.09), but he also has the most innings pitched and you know what you're getting from him day in and day out.

So, who would it be?

I agree on Lackey. So perhaps Lynn right now - he's only got 2 pitches in reality. Martinez always is on the brink when he starts but I think he needs to maintain the starter mentality
