I know it seems Lackey since his numbers aren't quite as good as the rest (the only one with an ERA over 3, sitting at 3.09), but he also has the most innings pitched and you know what you're getting from him day in and day out.

So, who would it be?

I agree on Lackey. So perhaps Lynn right now - he's only got 2 pitches in reality. Martinez always is on the brink when he starts but I think he needs to maintain the starter mentality

Yeah, except Lynn gives you the same thing as Lackey but even better (ERA at 2.5). He may only have 2 pitches, but he's just so effective with them and he gets more strikeouts. I'm not sure I would choose Lackey to start any game over Lynn.

6 man rotation?

 
Mozeliak hasn't ruled out making a move by the trade deadline, but don't expect the team to add a starting pitcher. Says you only need four starters to get through the playoffs, and the four starters they will use are already in the organization.

One of the Brewers' available bats seem like a good fit, but no idea what one of them would cost.

 
Reading around some this morning, looks like Piscotty is going to get a chance to win the 1B job. The organization had Piscotty play some 1B for Memphis after it was clear Adams was out for the season. Piscotty's best position is RF, but that job is filled. Played 3B in college, but couldn't handle it in the minors. Not enough speed to play CF.

Looking forward to seeing what he can do in the show. Might not hit a lot of balls out of the park, but can drive the ball well enough to hit doubles to both gaps.

 
Not exactly the most dynamic first MLB hit I've ever seen for Piscotty

Didn't see the game last night. How did Yadier Molina hit a triple? Did a couple outfielders collide on a fly ball to the gap and knock themselves out?

 
Down 8-6 going into the bottom of the 9th, and win the game on a bases-loaded walk.

It's like they are trying to increase the degree of difficulty for bonus points, like in gymnastics or platform diving.

With all the injuries they have won 65 games - and it's wins like this that make me wonder if it is smoke and mirrors

It's August already. Smoke and mirrors start to fade as April, May, June, and July have passed.

They have a +106 run differential (tops in MLB) despite their "offensive woes". This isn't a playoff team like Minnesota with a +5 run differential. THAT is smoke and mirrors. Or even the Cards from last year who, despite winning the NL Central, had a +16 run differential and only won 90 games. This year's team is on pace for a 103 win season, which would be the first 100 win team since Philly won 102 in 2011.

The team is legit and finds ways to win and I don't think any team would want to face the Cards in the postseason, even with their quiet bats of late.

They're a fine regular season team. My fear is the front of the rotation when they hit the playoffs. Compared to likely opponents, they're going to be at a disadvantage.

Same here and these funky wins will be tough to occur in the playoffs - the offense hasn't come consistent enough to get through tough pitching

I completely disagree. I'd match Wacha up against anyone. Similarly, Martinez can match up against most #2 guys. Where the advantage lies is Lynn/Lackey. Those guys should outdo any #3 and #4.

I'm much more worried about our bats than our pitching.

Mozeliak and Matheny said in the playoffs, you can't have too many relief pitchers. They don't want to get stuck in having to pitch relievers more than one inning three days in a row. So they are going to load up on bullpen arms with an eye on the postseason.

Bringing it back to your question, this only works if the relievers are the kind of relievers who get hitters out, which makes the Broxton acquisition such a head-scratcher. Maybe they were looking at 2009 data by mistake.

He has matured so much as a pitcher this season. When he first came up he would just throw 99-100 every pitch and hope the hitter missed. Now that he can spot a changeup and throw a curve, when he throws the fastball 97-98 it looks 104-105.

I went to Wrigley once. Unlike those dumps Fenway and Yankee Stadium, it actually lives up to its billing.

Great game because a) Prior pitched, when Prior was a thing, and b) Farnsworth completely melted down and the Cubs got killed and everyone was really salty.

Wasn't crazy about Siegrist coming back out to pitch the 8th, but he looked great both innings.

And Rosenthal with another 1-2-3 ninth!

Peralta made some good plays tonight at short.
