***Official 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs thread: Caps and Mystics to raise banners together in October. Congrats DC!!!!!!! (2 Viewers)

We...we probably would have beat Vegas.

/shoots self, again
As a Bolts fan, seeing the Caps destroy Vegas makes losing to them in the ECF  a bit easier to swallow...they're an absolute buzzsaw and it seems they're just not gonna be denied.

So if you’re a Caps fan, do you:

a.) hope they win the Cup in Game 5

or

b.) take your chances and try to win it in Game 6 at home?

I think I know the answer, but curious.
If this series comes back to DC, I watch game 6 in a state of mortal terror because if they lose that it’s back to Vegas with the specter of another blown 3-1 lead looming

if that answers your question

What have you done with the Caps team I am so used to seeing in the playoffs?

Nothing could possibly go wrong up 3-1 in series could it?

I'm just enjoying the ride to be honest, this is some fun ####!!!

haha, I wrote the title before reading this but it's still perfect.

I'm the guy that always wants to win that next game.  The perfect story ending with a home win is great until you lose game 5, and 6, and 7.  Then you had wished they'd have won game 5 in OT on the road.  Win wherever, who cares...

Imagine being a Blue Jackets fan that saw his team hit the posts multiple times in the double-OT loss in that would have put them up 3-0 in round one.  That game was the turning point of the NHL playoffs.

I think my ballot would like

Ovechkin

Kuznetsov

Holtby

Fleury
Ovie over Kuz because of sentiment? I was assuming Holtby was still edging out Kuz but he’s right on his heels with Ovie at 3, IMO. (Or maybe I’m just begging in my 10/1 Kuz bet)

Did I hear that correctly that teams up 3-1 in a SCF are 32-1?
One thing about stats like these: in a lot of cases a team up 3-1 was the superior team all season, started with home ice, maybe lost on the road in Game 3 or 4, and is getting ready to finish off a gentleman's sweep.  The Caps OTOH would likely be underdogs in two of the three potential remaining games.  Haven't seen an updated series price but I assume they're closer to 85-ish% than the 97% the stat implies.

These last 7 or 8 weeks have been so amazing. After the Caps went down 0-2 at home in the first round to Columbus, I really thought they were done. Thought maybe this was the end of an era, as Trotz would be leaving, Carlson would be leaving, and maybe the team needed to start thinking about life after Ovie. I had friends that weren’t even making fun of me for being a Caps fan anymore, they were actually worried if I was doing OK.

And now, they’re 1 win away from a moment, from a scene, that I’m trying not to let myself imagine yet. So instead, I’ve spent this morning looking back over the last couple of months. There have been so many moments that I would to keep in my memory. But I’ve come up with 10 that are my personal highlights of what’s happened so far.

10. 5-on-3 penalty kill, Game 2 at Vegas
Holding onto a 1-goal lead in the third period, playing at Vegas where the Golden Knights have been unbeatable, Beagle, Orpik and Niskanen lead the way in killing 68 seconds of 5-on-3, followed by another 52 seconds of 5-on-4. They get the win at Vegas, and suddenly it’s a series.

9. Orpik scores first goal in 2 years, Game 2 at Vegas
Takes a huge (legal) hit earlier, comes back to score the game-winner. If Orpik is scoring huge goals, maybe destiny really is on your side.

8. Wilson Game 7 fight vs. TB
Emblematic of the 4-0 beatdown in the deciding game of the Eastern Conference Finals.

7. Neal hits the post with wide open net early in Game 4
This is the kind of stuff that the Caps do in the playoffs, not their opponents. How can this be happening?

6. Trotz does the hot lap before Game 7
Trotz taking the hot lap to kick off the morning skate to the cheers and laughter of his players shows how loose and confident this team has become. When I saw this clip that morning, I believed they would win.

5. Eller Double OT goal in Game 3 vs. CBJ
Down 2-0 in the series and going on the road, the Caps stay alive in Double OT with this gritty, lucky goal that suddenly sparks their run. BONUS: Hometown DC announcers on the call, which I know people here love.

4. Ovechkin scores with 67 seconds left to win Game 3 vs. Pittsburgh
Series tied 1-1, Caps trailing 3-2 to start the third in Pittsburgh, they get the equalizer midway through the period, and then Backstrom sets up Ovechkin for the game-winner. Probably the first huge playoff goal in his illustrious career.

3. Ovechkin scores goal in first minute of Game 7 vs. TB
Wilson forces a turnover with a huge hit on Kunitz, Kuznetsov sets up Ovechkin, and Ovie blasts it home in the first minute to set the tone for Game 7. At this point you get the feeling that Ovechkin just isn't going to be denied.

2. Holtby – The Save
Two minutes to go, 1-goal lead, Holtby makes the greatest save in franchise history and one that you’ll be seeing on Stanley Cup highlight montages for years to come.

1. Kuznetsov OT series-winner vs. Pens
Ovie gets a turnover, nudges it ahead to Kuznetsov, and Kuznetsov exorcises the Pittsburgh demons to get Washington past the second round for the first time in 19 years.

Ovie over Kuz because of sentiment? I was assuming Holtby was still edging out Kuz but he’s right on his heels with Ovie at 3, IMO. (Or maybe I’m just begging in my 10/1 Kuz bet)
I think Ovechkin/Kuznetsov are clearly 1-2. Holtby has come up large for Caps when needed but the other two are the leaders the way i see it. I can't argue with Kuznetsov at 1.

Ovechkin gets the nod IMHO because he's been such a lightning rod for criticism in years past. Plus writers vote for the better story.

Yea Ovie probably gets it if it’s close. Guess I need one more huge game from Kuz, or an OT cup winner to seal it.

Kuzy 4 assists ties record for Stanley Cup Final, first time since Joe Sakic in 1996
crazy that this is the same guy who was a disaster with one goal and two points in 12 playoff games a couple years ago to doing what he's doing now, presumably hurt as well.  looked like he might be another Semin and instead he might be holding Conn Smythe.

probably feels extra good that Eller is tied to Halak when they were traded for one another after Halak singlehandedly beat arguably the Caps best team

This is when I started to believe this might actually be the year and was the second most exciting moment next to Kuznetsov's OT winner.

Speaking of excitement, kind of weird that these last two games have been lacking in that department. For years, I've begged for comfortable playoff wins and dreaded all those 1 goal games and OT games. Caps fans should never feel like this, but I'm starting to get greedy for a great moment to end the series rather than a comfortable, dominating win. How great would an Ovechkin OT winner be? I don't dare hope for that to be in DC, though. Just end this Thursday.

An Ovechkin OT winner would be like the last script to flip. They were the ones to overcome a 2 game series deficit. They've won more OTs than they've lost. They beat Pittsburgh. They've had the hot goalie post back-to-back shutouts to end a series while facing elimination. They've benefited from great bounces. They've overcome injuries and suspensions. Last playoff narrative to overcome is that Ovechkin doesn't have a playoff OT goal despite playing in about 500 OT games.

Glad for you caps fans....imagine winning ths cup in vegas??? Wow....what a party that would be.....

Takes me back to 1997....honestly though after all the president trophies and losing to jersey in the finals in 1995...plus losing ro colorado in 96....that the wings might never get it done....

Enjoy it if it happens caps fan......

People said the same kind of thing about Datsyuk.

Assuming the Caps win, I shudder to think how fast a celebration might turn into a riot given how little the people of DC proper care about hockey.  Most Caps fans are from the suburbs.  Those people on TV they show at the watch parties ... maybe 5% if that are from downtown DC.

DC has come incredibly far from the drug and murder capital that it was 40 years ago, and now really is one of the prettiest cities in the US.  I've lived here my whole life and I used to see prostitution and drugs on a daily basis outside my office only a block from the White House.  In the 80s I was robbed at gunpoint twice less than a block from the Capitol building.  Now the downtown part of the city is totally awesome and you feel very safe.

But the miscreants of society will use these events as a way to loot and pillage.  We're no Philly or Detroit, as the bad elements of DC tend to stay hidden these days (or in full view from a political standpoint).  But this is gonna bring those gangs out of SE and NE DC for sure.  Hopefully the authorities have their act together and are prepared to protect our sweet city and the 99% of people that are there to celebrate the right way

My quick impressions were that the guys climbing the poles and the ones "taking over the steps" looked like mostly a bunch of bros who live in the city and are bandwagoners (who I welcome, btw). But, cameras caught a ton of 40- and 50-somethings couples celebrating and even many with their young kids who I assume traveled there from the burbs. It has definitely been a suburban fanbase over the years, but I think the city folk have totally embraced them recently and it's the most expensive neighborhood in the city (rent-wise).

Nice veiled detroit/philly digs.....

I've had enough of these types of games to last me a lifetime.  Literally I feel like I'm going to throw up in some of those close games.  I'm all for comfortable wins.  Now and from here on out...It's so much more enjoyable to watch games and see if we can build on a lead, than having a heart-attack with every shot.

Game 7 in 2011, I was perfectly OK with it not being a tight game and with the Bruins lifting the Cup on the road (not that they had any choice after losing Game 5).

Nice timing, Al Haig, I nmean, Lou.

@SWhyno: #Isles fire GM Garth Snow and coach Doug Weight. Lou Lamoriello takes over as GM.

Snow has four years left on his contract and is remaining with the team. “I retrieved your laundry and detailed your car, anything else for today Mr. Lamoriello?”

Just quickly went back through the SC Finals history. Since the Original Six era ended in 1968, there have been 21 times in which a team has gone up 3-1 in a series. Only three times has the trailing team even forced a Game 7.

2006: Edmonton trailed 3-1, won Game 5 in OT in Raleigh, then Game 6 at home, lost Game 7 on the road.

1994: Vancouver trailed 3-1, won Game 5 at MSG and Game 6 in 'Couver, lost Game 7 on the road.

1987: Philly trailed 3-1, won Game 5 in Edmonton and Game 6 back home, lost Game 7 on the road.

Of all the other series, 10 were ended by the winning team in Game 5, the other eight went to Game 6.
