Some Canadian player news

=============

[Fabrizio Romano] Lille are already prepared to sell some players this summer. Jonathan David’s rise from Jan 2018 has been excellent and top clubs have his name in the list. David’s now Lille top scorer with 17 goals this season, 3 in UCL - and he’s just 22. Price tag around €50m.
where has he been linked?

watching too much Lille this year because of Weah... damn- David is good. I could see him in Spain or at an Arsenal level squad in the EPL. I think he'd break through whereever he goes.

Again, putting this here until we get a 2026 thread in a few years

Yon de Luisa, president of the Mexican Football Federation, released some details of the remodeling of the Azteca Stadium for the World Cup 2026, affirming that they will fight to have the opening match.

After the visit of the president of the FIFA, Gianni Infantino, de Luisa pointed out that the negotiations are ongoing, although they do not depend on them and it is expected to fine-tune some details of the calendar.

“ It is an issue that we have been discussing with President Infantino for months and there is still no definitive ‘yes’, but the talks have been good. We have to wait to see what the tournament and the calendar will be like, then it will be decided whether we will be able to receive the inauguration. We must remember that they are 48 selections for this World Cup“, declared de Luisa in a contact for W Sports.

The idea of having the opening match for the World Cup of 2026 and receive several matches of the competition, in addition, the renovations will give a drastic change to the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.

“The renovations that were discussed with Infantino would begin in the first half of next year. It is divided in two. The internal part is the one that most worries FIFA and the other is external. The details would have to ask Mr. Azcárraga. What is true is that the change in the Azteca will be extraordinary. He is going to be an example for the whole world, but he is going to leave his identity, his legacy. Unlike others that have been remodeled, its essence will be respected”, de Luisa pointed out.

The visit of the FIFA president to Mexico opens the possibility of seeking to have the match to kick off the World Cup in 2026, although it will depend on negotiations with the other two hosts, United States  and Canada, who aim to have the commitment in their respective countries.

hopefully they'll install puto-bird netting to keep those particular nuisances out.

I love this guy - just awesome FIFA is able to find these people to run its organization.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino asked at a business conference in California about migrant worker abuses in Qatar said in part: "My parents emigrated from Italy to Switzerland. When you give work to someone, even in hard conditions. you give him dignity and pride."

[FIFA Media]:Last 2 FIFA World Cup 2022 berths to be decided at Qatar’s Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium Intercontinental playoffs on 13 and 14 June between Australia or UAE v. Peru and Costa Rica v. New Zealand will kick-off at 21.00 local time

For those that don't follow FIFA too closely, they mostly wave their hands at the various numerous complaints they receive saying "there is nothing to see here" which makes this statement (see below) from them ominous.

TL/DR: Chile has issued a formal complaint against Ecuador for fielding an ineligible player.  FIFA agrees that there is enough merit to the complaint to open a formal investigation.

Worst case for Ecuador is getting kicked out of the WC

It is interesting that wiki lists his birth place as Ecuador, which I assume might be part of the falsification of documents.

The mention of Peru in the statement from FIFA may indicate he really hails from that country instead.

[Bill Owen] The Missouri House has truly agreed and finally passed SB652 which waives the sales tax on tickets purchased for the World Cup. This is a FIFA requirement which would of otherwise excluded KC from hosting the World Cup

Really hoping Kansas City gets some games. Would be nice not to have to travel since I'm sure the ticket prices will be insane.

I don't think we will be chosen though.

I have the opportunity to buy tickets to Canada’s 3 games. Anyone here planning to go? Accommodations are the largest hurdle by far.

Ukraine beat Scotland yesterday in the european play-in (in Scotland)... setting up a match vs Wales this weekend to see who joins the US, England and Iran.

I know most of hte guys here are rooting for Wales, so the US doesn't have to face a sentimental favorite. But I would much rather have them in the WC to represent and lift the spirits of their homeland.

at least, until the US crushes those spirits. but hopefully it's Ukraine and the US that make it out of group play. unlikely with England as one of the tournament favorites, but a guy can hope.

Paid for my tickets today and signed up for my hayya card. Fan village prices aren’t cheap, but ok.

Excited to watch Canada score our first World Cup goal😀.

I would love to see them advance out of the group.

Belgium and Croatia are quality but aging sides.   Canada will need a draw against one of them and then beat Morocco (which is doable for Canada) and then hope for the best in the other games such that 4 points sneaks you through.

I can see Canada beating either of those two.

They play the perfect style to grab an upset.  They play kind of like the US used to before we tried to evolve before we were ready.
Exactly what I was going to post as well. Greater than the sum of their parts. And a good enough goal scorer to put one in against anyone. Their biggest issue will be the inability of their GK to wear sweatpants in Qatar.

Odds still moving, but with the group set at last...

  • England 91%
  • USA 52%
  • Wales 32%
  • Iran 24%
...to advance out of Group B.

And the TV schedule:

  • Nov. 21 Wales 2 p.m. ET; Fox, Telemundo.
  • Nov. 25 England 2 p.m. ET; Fox, Telemundo.
  • Nov. 29 Iran 2 p.m. ET; Fox.
Three 2pm starts is sweet given that Qatar is +7 hours to ET.

The England match the day after Thanksgiving is going to draw some eyeballs.

More than a couple good enough goal scorers. Davies, Larin, Buchanan...I like them a lot to get out of the group.

You can get them at 3/1 to advance right now.  By far the worst in their group:

  • Belgium 86%
  • Croatia 57%
  • Morocco 34%
  • Canada 23%

I’m not as high on Canada as several in here but I’m surprised by those odds - especially being that much below Morocco.

I'd love to wager on them winning the group.

I don't necessarily disagree, but Canada hasn't played in World Cup since Mexico '86. Morocco played in Russia and is reigning African champions. Belgium and Croatia seem a bit long in the tooth, but they are still stacked with world class talent top to bottom.

I don’t like them to get out of the group - just thought they’d be higher than that.

Argentina extended its unbeaten streak to 35 games with a 5-0 win over Estonia.  Messi scored all 5.

The outburst moved Messi into 4th place all time in international scorers

Who is that?
Oliver is the worst ref in the EPL. Every game I see him there is a major issue.  I cringe every time I hear his name. I do not understand how he is constantly rated so high.

Has to be Taylor
Taylor, Moss, Dean, Atkinson all have their ups and downs.  I think a few are retiring too?

gianmarco said:
Hmm.....shouldn't be.  Oliver and Taylor consistently rank at the top (although I just looked and found one list with Taylor more mid pick).  I don't know the other names (Bennett, Beswick, Burt, and Nunn).
I have no idea who the bolded are, which probably means they do a good job.  :D

You're on an island here. He's consistently rated the best referee in the EPL. And I would agree. I pulled up multiple lists trying to find those other guys and Oliver is the one constant as either best or second best on every list I saw. He's even on best refs of all time in the EPL.

Not sure what to tell you when you're calling him the worst.

Oh I know.  Like I said, I do not understand how he is constantly rated so highly. To me he's usually a disaster.  Not much you can say....

The US think they can beat Wales and Iran.

Wales thinks they can beat US and Iran.

Iran thinks they can beat US and Wales.

And I think every one is correct which should make for a very competitive group.  In none of those games should we see any team bunker and pray.

Hopefully England will get too cocky again like in 2010 and they slip up.

It will be fun to watch Weah, Aaronson, D James, and Bale running by Maguire.... :D

I'm anxiously awaiting the first few games when the official ball - "Al Rihla" - is used so we can hear the standard pre-tournament criticisms from goalkeepers world wide. Adidas has promoted its new ball with the claim that it is "the fastest and most accurate FIFA World Cup ball to date." An ambitious claim indeed. The new ball retails for $165 so it surely must be quite special.
