***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

First of all, this is incredibly sad news. I’ve been reading his stuff since his SI days (and he’s been on like every single podcast I listen to on the past couple weeks).

Second, I get why people are speculating about foul play, but we don’t know anything at this point. Honestly, I don’t find it too far fetched to believe that a seemingly healthy 48 year old could collapse and die out of nowhere, because that’s very nearly what happened to me in June. It turned out I had a pulmonary embolism, and was very lucky that I went to the hospital when I did.

Freaking awful. Very good writer and seemed like a great dude. Obviously most know him from soccer but he wrote a lot of other stuff for SI back in the day (including the famous "The Chosen One" article...Lebron's first cover story back when he was in HS)

Does no good to speculate at this point. But given what happened at the game 2 weeks ago, its hard not to.

He was in the hospital on Monday for bronchitis. Collapsed today at the game.

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday that he had visited a hospital while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.”

god I hope not.

His wife is one of the preeminent doctors in the entire country so I doubt anything is going to get past her if god forbid anything fishy happened.

At geglobo a Brazilian news outlet tweeted out during the game that a journalist was getting a heart massage and was taken out on a stretcher - presumably Grant Wahl :(

His poor wife. Finding out your husband is dead, without knowing how or why, and his body is 20 hours away.
I saw her name (Celine Gounder) and thought it was familiar. She’s an infectious disease specialist who was quoted frequently during the pandemic.

You’re right that the combination of shock and being so far away and not knowing what happened must be a unique form of torture. My prayers are with her and the rest of his family.

Scrolling through Twitter, every single person who knew him talks about how kind he was. We should all aspire to that kind of legacy

Jesus. Wahl's been writing about US soccer since just about before there was even really soccer in the US.

Him and Bob Bradley's brother used to be THE go-to sources for actual information. And his reputation has always been that he was one of the really good guys.

It's weirdly impactful.

Oh damn. Such sad news. One of those guys that was one of "our guys" reporting and talking about soccer in the USA when not many people did. This one is a bit of a gut punch. May be rest in peace.

You may be interested to know that, at least according to this thread, he was a huge Chiefs fan
Yeah. He was born in the Kansas City area. Not too far from where I live. He graduated high school here and in the past wrote occasionally about his hometown teams. This is such a loss. Dammit.

Wahl's brother is on TikTok saying he was murdered, that he doesn't think he died of a heart attack.
I get that he's shocked and grieving, but this is just so irresponsible.
Agreed. Grant has been struggling with what he thought was bronchitis for the last week and a half. Good chance it was something much more serious(or developed into something much more serious anyway).

He's in grief mode and angry about losing his brother, so I get it.... but it seems a little reckless to speculate foul play before even getting any reports from the scene.

This is true. My wife said that she had no idea the woman on her "epidemiology Twitter" feed was married to "the guy that writes soccer articles."

Can someone explain the throw in rules?
I believe two hands and overhead?
Time limit?
How far can they move/drift?

Two hands and overhead. They are not supposed to move at all unless its a yard or two during the process of throwing.

No time limit but they can be booked for wasting time.
