I don't think that factored in as much as trying to maximize worldwide TV audiences. Think about the viewers in Asia, Europe, and Americas and when to hold matches to get the most eyeballs.

Same things happen when I try an get Israel, China, and USA on the same conference call. GDB when I have to try and pull in Australia.

yup.

Though, indirectly, American football did significantly benefit Fox.

WC TV rights are usually a long and heavy bidding process in the US with numerous broadcasters trying to win them.

When the corruption happened and Qatar moved the WC to the winter, Fox quietly told FIFA they were going to sue their asses back to the stone age because the contract was specifically for the summer WC in which Fox had no conflicts with their College and Pro Football contracts.

FIFA panicked, and again VERY quietly, about a month later, Fox "won" the rights to the 2026 WC with out having to bid against anybody. And 2026 would have been a ridiculous bidding process because Amazon, Paramount and Disney all were expected to present massive bids along with Fox.

Do you guys realize that most countries in the world have zero idea what American football is nor are interested in knowing, right? the fact that it's before the 1pm games is purely due to the time zone Qatar is and also based on the heat of the day, later games to avoid hottest part of the day in Qatar. Nothing to do with the NFL.

So Qatar is 9 hours ahead of me right now, so on Sunday that would be about 6pm Qatar time for a start time, yes? Based on some of the start times of the later matches (like the semifinals), 10 pm Qatar time would be a lot cooler I would think. Which would mean a 1pm time here in the midwest.

Then why were the semi's played at 2 PM on non NFL days and the the final moved to early morning on an NFL day?

By the way...the US accounted for about $1.2 billion of the $2.6 billion in total broadcast rights. I think the biggest customer probably had FIFA's ear.

P.S. - 9 AM is 5 PM Qatar time, right in the heat of the day, unlike the 2 PM is 10 PM times that avoided the heat of the day. If you're going to bash the country financing this gig at least make up reasons that are plausible.

Says the guy on an American football discussion board...

Also the US is still by far the single biggest market in terms of dollars and the WC isn't anywhere close to the biggest draw on TV.

So yes, they do pay attention to NFL start times because, like it or not, the US is the largest entertainment market in the world and it isn't even close (and here the NFL is #1, which is why no other sports even try to go head to head with them).

Don't be ridiculous. It has nothing to do with either. My daughter has a cheer event and they obviously scheduled it based on that.

Yes...Telemundo included and Fútbol de Primera. China and Russia were two cycle deals too, although China's included the women's WC. Not sure if that $2.6 was one or two cycles.

Regardless, I was shocked that the US broadcasters were ponying up that much relative to other countries.

I believe this is the total paid by Fox and Telemundo for US Broadcast rights for 2018 and 2022. I don't think its unreasonable to expect these networks had some say in setting the kickoff times.

One extra thing to note, the rights are for all FIFA controlled events, which means the winner gets the tv rights to the World Cup, Women's World Cup, Club World Cup, U20 WC, U17 WC etc.

Tuesday and Wednesday they would want those games to be played at night in the European market - thus the later start time. (Those games basically always fall on Tuesday/Wednesday to ensure Saturday 3rd place and Sunday 3rd place.

The NFL was most likely the tiniest of factors - they would rather not have an unhappy US broadcast partner but 10am eastern puts it in an ideal window in Europe which is all they care about. The NFL maybe prevented it from being played at, say, noon. That's about it. The final is 2018 was played at 11am eastern time. In 2014 when it was in Brazil it kicked off 3pm. It was at 1:30 pm in 2010 (South Africa). In 1994 it was played at 3:30 et (noon Pacific).

So anyway 10am is a totally normal kickoff with it being played on the other side of the Atlantic.

this NFL talk is so odd.

Every WC was in the summer except this one.

In 2018, the Semi finals were in the afternoon (2:00pm ET US time) on a Tues/Wed and the final was on a Sunday morning, same as 2022. The NFL was not in play in the summer of 2018 (nor has it been in any WC in which the semi finals are played on weekdays. as they always have been in the modern era).

The times have nothing to do with the NFL in 2022 just as the exact same times used in the summer 2018 had nothing to do with the NFL. The time slots are mostly arranged around the host country while trying to include as much of the world as possible. China used to get screwed but as their sponsors gained more power, FIFA slowly shifted a little more to help the Chinese audience.

The 2014 World Cup had the highest TV ratings in the US because the games were in Brazil and that meant better time slots for the games being shown in the US.

I think he was talking about US-Iran vs US-Netherlands

Start time was a main difference. 10:00am ET vs 2:00pm ET is a big difference especially for the West coast.

And the Iran game was not a normal group stage game. It was effectively a knockout round game because of the circumstances. Even casual fans understood the "win or go home" concept of that game, making its importance higher and more attractive to watch for some people.

And the Iran game was not a normal group stage game. It was effectively a knockout round game because of the circumstances. Even casual fans understood the "win or go home" concept of that game, making its importance higher and more attractive to watch for some people.

I think in the past that would likely have been true but there are mitigating circumstances which allow these numbers to be closer than previously.

* More people work from home now, giving them easier access if they want to watch a game on TV during a week day.

* More people stream than ever before, giving people in work a way to watch from their computers.

* People during the week will sometimes congregate at bars and restaurants to watch, as they have in the past. The difference now being that Nielsen has a signifanctly better way to estimate groups that gather to watch sporting events than they did in the past.

And FIFA gives eff all about playing conditions as shown by the 94 final in California being in the middle of the day.

But the times of this Cup were in a pretty normal window regardless.

In 2026 it will be a sunshine final for sure.

The reality is that any longitude from Kazakhstan to Dublin will have pretty favorable timing to maximize worldwide audiences.

When you watch a 16 year old do this in his age group, you sit up and think the kid is going to be a fantastic pro some day.

The fact that he is doing this against hardened Brazilian pros at that age is almost too hard to comprehend. And since he does not have a Euro passport, he is going to have two more years to keep developing physically along with any further develops in his technical skills.

My understanding is that the NFL has significant viewership outside the US. We are regularly seeing games in Mexico, England, Germany, etc. Further, as mentioned above by another poster, in terms of revenue generation for the cup. the US and other countries that significantly view the NFL are a major factor for that.

While I may be wrong in my statement (I don't know and am willing to stand corrected if I am), I maintain that my statement was rational and not some ignorant "center of the world thinking" like you posit.

Read some of my responses to this topic. It may help you understand that the NFL has no effect on these start times just as the NFL had no effect on the same start times in the summer of 2018.

That's a significant increase in the total number of games. It seems to point toward future tournaments being split across multiple countries.

I don't have a lot of nice things to say about Qatar but the compactness of this WC was good for visiting fans.
 
How long before the European clubs take FIFA on?

Johnny Infinite seems to have a lot of ideas about how players being paid by someone else ought to spend an ever-increasing portion of their time working to line his pockets.
