***official 2024/25 women’s college bball thread*** paige gets her title and will soon be beat up and abused in the wnba (4 Viewers)

Oh man, so awesome for Allisha Gray winning BOTH the Skills Challenge and 3-Pt Contest.

Remember, Aflac kicked in that extra $55K for each, so Allisha got a nice bag last night. A'ja immediately tweeting that she's done paying for dinner.

12 second shot clock. And even though the defense has to bring the ball back past the 3 Point line like all playground rules, the 12 second shot clock doesn't start then. It starts the second the defense rebounds the ball. So, often, it's more of an 8-10 second shot clock.

Even if you didn't see it live, I can't recommend the interviews with Allisha Gray enough. She's straight out of Greenwood, SC. Sounds just like Xavier Leggette.

More importantly, one of the best human beings you could imagine.

Didn’t get to see the game ..just followed the stats online. Impressive game for Ogunbowale!! I’m curious - did she get more opportunities because USA was focused on Clark (not to take away from what Ogunbowe did)? Nice stat sheet for Angel Reese as well — 12 points, 11 rebounds in 18 minutes. I believe 8 of those points were in the 4th qtr (even late 4th qtr). Another double for the “dog.”

No they were in her face. Everything she threw up went in. It was an impressive offensive performance.

It looked like Team USA was old and slow. The WNBA team was quicker in transition and when they had to play half-court Ogunbowale was unstoppable. They had better movement, better passing.

What a great setup for this all-star game. The best all-star game in any sport I’ve seen in a long time.

Team W had axes to grind and were playing loose, Team USA had all the pressure.

It was like the NBA all-star games back when the players cared. These ladies were serious and it made for a great game.

Ogunbawale grew up near our neighborhood and went to the high school where my daughter will start next year so we've kept an eye on her through her years at Notre Dame and in the WNBA. For me it is sad that she took the snub 4 years ago so personally but I obviously can't speak to her decision. I would think she leaves some money on the table by not competing in the Olympics and that has to hurt as she's probably not earning much for how dominant a career she's had.

Clark had showed some great passing but didn't shoot well and was 0-for-alot on 3s. I don't think the USA team was paying any special attention to her.

Who knows how popular the W will ever really become, but this weekend was everything the league could have asked for.

New eyeballs are great, but it only matters if people like what they see. So much of what makes the W great was on display this weekend.

Team USA lost, but people saw Breanna and A'ja dominate. Breanna dropped an easy 31-10 (I think 31 would have the ASG record if not for Arike). A'ja's 22-6 was actually a pretty crappy game by her standards.

And on A'ja, let me just say, any league in history would be blessed to have a best player that's as awesome and fun as A'ja. Her donning Allisha's glasses on Allisha's big night was awesome. As well as during the ASG when A'ja completely clocked her, she immediately called Allisha a flopper.

The league is full of great, fun women, and A'ja is right up there with the best of them. And of course, having the best season in WNBA history.

On Alllisha. I hope everybody got a chance to watch some of her interviews. She's shy as can be, and hated all the attention (her and Caitlin seem to have that in common).
But she's a country bumpkin from Greenwood, SC. She's not full Xavier Leggette, but close to it. And it's awesome.
Love seeing her get some spotlight.

You got Jonquel Jones one shot away from winning the 3- point contest at 6'6".

Sophie Cunninghame chugging a beer on cue during the ASG, and just generally being awesome.

All the stuff for Caitlin and Angel too. I don't bring that up as much because everybody seems to know that. But it was good to see them hanging out and having fun with the established vets.

Anyway, just a fantastic weekend. I think it encapsulated many of the things that make this league great.

Bittersweet because it also means there's no more W until mid-August.

I'm sorry, I forgot Nneka.

It won't be shown in the box score, but she set the tone for that game. (No surprise since she's got the longest beef with Team USA). A lot of young and new All-Stars. Certainly a lot of players that haven't done battle with Team USA.

Nneka came out in the 1st and said eff these guys. You notice when Miller made the first subs, she left Nneka in. Everybody on Team WNBA needed some minutes with Nneka to get a feel for how a pro's pro does battle with Team USA.

Love her game, but you listen to Nneka talk for 5 seconds and you can't help but fall in love.

It was definitely a great weekend and last night’s game was a ton of fun. It also begged the obvious question…….why isn’t the US Olympic team comprised of the best players? There are easily 2-4 players who aren’t on that squad who are more deserving than the current roster.

Anyone, great game. Son and I had a blast watching it on DVR this morning.

I'll be honest. I don't give a crap about the Olympics in any sport. I'm upset that Phee is burning her WNBA title chances for a shot at a gold medal.
I'm a 40-something dude with no athletic talent (at least not since '96 when I was giving Al Bundy's career at Polk High a run for it's money). I know my opinion on this is more than worthless.

Anyway, I have no idea why anybody cares about Olympic sports for the most part, and certainly not in sports where the US is clearly the best in the world.

But like all Olympic committees, USA Basketball Is ****ed up too. It's all political ******** where the right asses need to be kissed. Women's basketball is no different.

And I'm not convinced it wasn't just a Geno/UConn recruiting tool for 20 years. "Play at a UConn or you'll never be an Olympian" seems like a solid recruiting pitch and it's played out.

Possible GOAT Candace Parker also had some wild Olympic snubs. For Geno, that's what she gets for going to UT.

Geno had some other recruiting messages against Pat and UT that I won't get into. He got Sue, Diana, and Breanna to keep it quiet long enough to pull it off.

So the Olympic team got whupped by the scrubs?
Yes (not really whipped though), but that team of scrubs probably wins silver in the Olympics if we were allowed to field two teams.
Yeah, when you throw the top 24 players in the WNBA in a game, the line is razor thin.

I don't know squat about women's international basketball, but I'll be excited to see how Team USA does against Australia.

I think Belgium and France are supposed to be even better, but Australia is loaded with WNBA talent. Ezi and Alanna (who should have been in the AS Game, IMO). Bec Allen, Steph Talbot, Sami Whitcomb, Kristy Wallace, and Jade Melbourne.

And of course, 3-time WNBA MVP and 4-time Olympic medalist, Lauren Jackson. She's 43 and has been out of top level basketball for about 10 years, but still.
And coached by NY Liberty coach Sandy Brondello.

Speaking of Jade Melbourne. I'm trying to figure out if I'm just a stupid southern redneck. Every announcer and podcaster pronounces her last name (and city in Australia) as Mel-BUN. I've always thought that word was Mel-BORN. (actually, I go mel-BERN, but I'm sure that's not right)

I'm just assuming I'm an idiot redneck, and the high fallutin' international types just ignore that "R". Is that really how Melbourne is pronounced?

Mel-bun, yes. My daughter lived a bridge year in Sydney (“Sid’ knee” 😁), and one of my son’s best friends has lived for several years in Melbourne. I can’t tell you why they drop the R, though.

No shock, but the AS Game shattered it's previous high in viewership.3.4 million viewers
The previous high was 2003 with 1.4 million viewers.

And just as importantly, I'd imagine most of those 3.4 million viewers liked what they saw.

Team USA looking good in the last tune-up against Germany. I think it's Germany's first Olympics, but they've got the Sabally sisters and Feibich.

This team has a big burden to carry. The last time Team USA lost a game in the Olympics was 1992.

3.4M? Impressive! The NBA drew 5.5M viewers for their all-star game. Plus, the WNBA presented a, you know, competitive game.

Would be interesting to see the difference between viewers at the start of the game and the end of the game for both contests.

Angel is the 10th player announced to join Unrivaled 3x3

3x3 league starting in January to give players a way to make money in the off-season without going overseas. Started by Breanna and Phee with a lot of big name investors (Geno Auriemma, Ashton Kutcher, Steve Nash, Carmelo, Megan Rapinoe, and Alex Morgan among them).

Each player will make at least $100K. League played in Miami.
They are announcing the players one at a time, about one a week lately, it seems. There will be 30 players.

It's hard to imagine many of the players would say "no". First year players also get some sort of equity stake in the league.

Interesting concept. No idea if it'll really work, as I don't know of many things like this that have been tried. Obviously, I hope it does.

And speaking of the expansion and the money that Lacob dropped to get in on the action, I don't think it's a coincidence that Unrivaled is launching right before the CBA will end.

This could be an insanely contentious CBA negotiation.

Other leagues have discussed a player owned or alternative league before CBA negotiations before. But in the NBA/NFL, that's players needing to replace $5-50 million a year in salary. Not gonna happen with a new league. Very few will hold that picket line.

WNBA vets need to replace about $100-250K in salary. Most have been getting close to doing that by playing all over the world, and it's not inconceivable that a start-up could do that.
Janis told me freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.

WNBA players wouldn't seemingly be in a great negotiating position, but I could see the fact that they are used to living on a modest salary (by pro sports standards) helping their negotiating power.

They aren't farting around, and if they got to back to living on "very little" playing all over the world, so be it.

And as we hear numbers being reported in the media about how much money the WNBA loses, it's important to remember the CBA negotiations are on the horizon. (anybody parroting the media's numbers.....how much do you trust the media?)

WNBA owners and the NBA, these are private companies. They aren't opening their books until they have to.

I have no idea what the WNBA makes or loses, but anybody saying they do is either making it up or being told what to say by WNBA owners right before a labor negotiation.

We're back in business baby! Congrats to the ladies on the Gold, but I know we've all hated going so long with no W.

And it's going to be a freaking whirlwind. The regular season ends in barely over a month, and the teams all have about 15 games left to play.
Everybody is almost playing every other day.

It's going to be wild to see how the exhausted Olympic players deal with coming back to this whirlwind vs. the players that got a month off.

And of course the battle for the 7/8 seeds was just getting wild last we left off.
Fever and Sky holding for now, but they've got a lot of teams on their heels that just got a month to get healthy. Dream will get Rhyne Howard back. Mystics should get Shakira Austin and Brittany Sykes back. WIngs will get Satou and Maggie (we all just saw Satou dominating in the Olympics).

It's about to get nuts boys and girls.

Better than having to go to Russia in the off season.

Rough one for the Sky.
It was already going to be a tall task, but when Chennedy was a late scratch, it seemed impossible.

Sky can't shoot (and just traded away their only real 3 pt threat), and live in the paint. 6'9" Griner makes that a problem. If you've ever wondered why Griner doesn't block more shots, it's because teams don't even try to challenge her at the rim.

Just a recipe for some ugly Sky basketball.

It was also Kahleah's first trip back to Chicago since leaving. Damn, she's good.

They came up short against a really good Lynx team on the road, but man, you gotta love what you see from the Mystics finally at full strength. Lynx are just relentless.

Never had a chance to watch Shakira Austin much before, but she's really damn good and so fun to watch.

Even for a team that would need a hell of a run to get back into the playoff race, the Mystics are so deep. Their back-up PG is the starter for the 4th place Olympic Belgium team. Their 3rd string PG is the 22 year old starter for the bronze medal Aussie team. Good to see Melbourne get hot.

But the big story is surely Stewie.

She's been great this year but not absolutely dominant like she has been years past.

In the Olympics, A'ja was great as always, on an unbelievable tear, and the best in the world.

But for the whole of that Olympic run when the US had to have it, it was Stewie that delivered.

She seems to have returned with that alpha dog mentality.

She's been the alpha dog from day one. 4 Final Four MVPs in college. Got to be hard adjusting to a world where you may not be the best in it.

But maybe she's decided she's still the best in the world and she's not going to adjust.

Which would mean the first title for the storied New York Liberty

Great game between the Storm and Fever.

I got money riding on the Storm to win it all, and I'd feel a little better to see them bounce back after a tough loss to Atlanta (Dream look great with Rhyne back).

It sucks that there aren't enough jobs for all the great women's basketball players, but that's one of the things that makes the W so great.

Imagine the NFL or NBA with only 12 teams? Every game would literally be like a Playoff game on steroids. For those that think the love of the W is schtick. It's not, because every game is just world class athletes giving their all. I'm not sure there's another league where you get that right now.

Lexie Hull has been barely hanging on to a roster spot for much of her career.
