It was a joke. The W is WAY out on the periphery for me. The last time the W crossed my radar was Reese going on IR. And swoopes being.a donkey.
no disrespect intended. maybe the playoffs will garner my attention somewhat. I’d like to see CC take down some of the haters I’m one of the target audiences that they nearly lost completely by not putting CC, and Reese for that matter, on the Olympic team. I was vaguely interested in the beginning. With the Olympic break, I barely know it’s still going on and no longer look for info at all. This thread is the only reason I checked in on the W

My MVP ballot: A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Brenna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, Caitlin Clark
Wilson will win MVP. Collier will finish second. Stewart and Thomas will be 3-4 in either order, I think Stewie finishes 3rd because of how New York pulled away with first place, but in the balloting points Stewie and AT will be close with a big dropoff between them and 5th.
There isn’t an obvious MVP candidate on Seattle and a second player on the top four teams doesn’t make sense, so I think Clark will get the most 5th place mentions and might steal a couple 3rds and 4ths.
My All-WNBA ballot:
First team: Wilson, Collier, Stewart, Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu
All-WNBA is positionless, so the top four from the MVP voting can all make first-team All-W even though they are all frontcourt players.
I like Ionescu over Clark for the fifth spot here because of how Sab held the New York perimeter fort together while Vandersloot was out and then Laney-Hamilton. And Clark had several dud games in the first 10, giving Ionescu a head start.
Second team: Clark, Nneka Ogwumike, Kahleah Copper, Jonquel Jones, Angel Reese
Clark has been the best guard in the league since the Olympic break, so she might make the first team, but definitely deserves at least second-team.
Seattle needs representation here, and Ogwumike is their best player.
Copper tailed off after the Olympics, but she was a first-team performer before that, so she’s on the second team.
J Jones has the luxury of efficiency playing next to Stewart and Ionescu, but she still delivers and is a great defender.
Angel Reese led the league in rebounding and was one of the best defensive forwards in the league. She deserves a second-team spot.
Dearica Hamby and Arike Ogunbowale will get some All-WNBA votes with the numbers they put up, but their teams were so bad their production feels empty. DeWanna Bonner will get some consideration, but to me she’s a low-impact player for the numbers she puts up. Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum should be on the short lists, but I think they will pay the accolades price for the Aces finishing fourth.
All-Defense: Wilson, DiJonai Carrington, Ezi Magbegor, Alanna Smith, Jordan Horston
Wilson is the best offensive player and the best defensive player in the league right now. She deserves MVP and DPOY.
Carrington is the best perimeter defender I’ve seen this season.
Could also see Kelsey Plum break through here over Horston. Vegas shares the load with their guards, but Plum spends the most time on the opponent’s best perimeter scoring threat, and you can tell which guard is trying to shut down in the 4th quarter by checking who Plum is guarding.
Napheesa Collier might take Smith’s spot. Minnesota deserves a player on All-Defense. The Lynx lean on Smith a little more to make their collapse-and-recover work so well, but Collier is right up there, too.
If Angel Reese has played the full season, she would have gotten consideration, too. Her off-ball defense the first month was terrible, but she’s so good defending PnRs teams will swap out the planned screener to get Reese out of the play.
All-Rookie: Clark, Reese, Rickea Jackson, Kamilla Cardoso, Aaliyah Edwards
It was super fun tracking the full rookie class. Clark broke the league record for assists and was the biggest draw in the league in person and on TV. Reese led the league in rebounding with all eyes on her, too. Jackson started slow, but showed flashes of a player whose ceiling is leading the league in scoring someday. Cardoso was hurt early in the season but altered opponents’ play more than any rookie besides Clark. Edwards had a quiet season on a terrible team, but because of the bigger role she had I like her for the fifth spot over Leonie Fiebich, an outstanding role player for New York but a role player.
Cameron Brink would have led the league in blocks had not gotten hurt.
Jacy Sheldon might end up being remembered as the player Dallas took with Angel Reese available, but she’s going to be a top-tier defender down the road and has three-point range on offense.
Julie Vanloo showed a lot of creativity on ball, and shot it a lot better later in the season.

When should they play? Saturday is just as bad with college football all day. I'm not sure avoiding weekends is a good strategy.
Even if they did, there's NFL on Monday and Thursday nights, and a lot of college games on Fridays this year. They're gonna have to play during football games at some point.

Yep. DiJonai Carrington, who was highly critical of Clark for no apparent reason (or ones that are obvious to those who aren't stupid), poked her in the eye early in the game, no foul was called, and we are supposed to believe it was accidental. Right. I am sure the nitwits who run the WNBA will be happy when the Fever are eliminated, and they can get back to no one caring about the rest of their season.

Connecticut played great defense, but imo, she just had a bad shooting night, which happens.
Bonner guarding her was an interesting choice. Bonner is 6'4" and quick, but she's also 37. Bonner was closing out, but didn't seem to be a huge factor on the 3 point shots.
She did seem to be a factor on Caltlin driving and on PnR's. She has the length and quickness to defend the drives reasonably well, but she can also switch on the PnR's Fever PnR's have been destroying teams lately, but Bonner can at least get some size and quickness on Boston.
Going to be wild to see how this series goes.

Could be, but I think think the most likely answer is that it's an Olympic year.
WNBA season normally ends a month ago, which is perfect timing, imo.
Though, I completely agree. There is a certain set of people that were pumped up about today, and not bothered that it conflicted with the NFL in what is still basically the pre-season.
But I understand we are the minority. It was a big day for a relatively small number of us.
But surely, under normal circumstances, the W isn't trying to compete with an NFL Sunday.

The three games on ESPN had viewership from 400K-460K. WNBA regular season games this season had around 400K TV viewers after you filter out the Indiana games.
Indiana-Connecticut on ABC drew 1.84 million, above Indiana’s TV average of 1.1 million this season. It was the most-watched WNBA playoff game since the 2000 WNBA Finals.
All that said, the WNBA league office and team owners are full of people who are either incompetent by pro sports marketing standards, or see the whole endeavor as a tax write-off and aren’t invested in league success. If I were advising the top players, I’d tell them to look into breaking away from the WNBA after the current labor agreement expires and see if starting a new league is feasible. Might get locked out of some arenas and ESPN after betraying NBA team owners, but it wouldn’t take too many deep pockets to start up a league that could pay more than the current WNBA salary structure.

I think it's more that, just like some NFL WRs don't want to win unless they are a big part of the game plan, the powers-that-be with the WNBA only want big success if the face of the league has a certain, shall we say, look, and Caitlan Clark doesn't have it. They will all likely silently cheer when the Fever get eliminated here from the playoffs in the next game or two.

That said, Clark has come out and said she didn’t think the eye poke was intentional. Not sure whether she believes it, or is just trying to deescalate the situation. Either way, it does seem that nothing is going to come of it. Hopefully the Fever will be more competitive in game 2.

"So when we walked into the arena, people were on that third balcony looking down at the tops of our players' heads to watch... After a few away games, and all of the sellouts, Caitlin asked the WNBA if they would pay spot bonuses to the away team players," Barber continued.
For context, a spot bonus is a one-time monetary incentive that's given to employees as a result of extraordinary performance; which, in this case, would be the staggering attendance metrics at the games Indiana played — despite the attendance being mostly due to Clark.
Essentially, Clark wanted her opponents to get paid bonuses for selling out arenas full of her fans.
"She said 'We're making all this new revenue, and I would like the away team to benefit from that. Could they get a spot bonus?'," Barber added.
The statement begins with arenas being filled with Fever fans when the Fever would play away games in other cities. So if Caitlin was asking for spot bonuses for the away teams, wasn’t she asking for the Fever players to get the spot bonuses? From watching the video and how Barber's talking, as Barber is the COO of the Fever, she says "when we would go to away games", she's using the term "away games" as referring to the team that they are playing outside of Indiana, so even though Atlanta is the Home team in their stadium, to Barber, that's an Away Game and she's referring to Atlanta as the Away Team they are playing in their own (from Indiana's perspective) Away Game. So she seems to be implying that Clark has asked for the home team of the stadium to get the bonus owed but referring to the stadium's home team as the Away Game opponent.
