Multiple deaths reported in Port St. Lucie amid reports of tornadoes across Florida; Martin County enforces curfew

Per Miami's 7 News, from tornadoes in a trailer home.

MULTIPLE TWISTERS CONFIRMED TOUCHED DOWN NEAR VERO BEACH, FL! Our field teams are sending devastating images in, we will keep you posted. SAR teams are searching for survivors as we speak.

Brandon and Plant City right now getting the brunt of the Northern wall, major flash flooding
I listed cities earlier where I have family. I actually have family in Plant City, but they don't know it. Found them via DNA testing, but none of them that I have reached out to have answered.

My cousin in Palm Bay has messaged that what she's seen is the worst she has ever experienced ... and she's lived in Florida all her life. The ones in Vero escaped tornado damage as of last report. The one in Myakka has been silent for a while, probably won't hear from her until tomorrow.

Lots of power out in Tampa per Mrs. O who is working a shelter.
I know this is serious stuff, and your wife is doing great work, but the fact you and Beans hightailed it out of there made me chuckle.
I wish she was here with me now. She is essentially forced to work shelters or risk termination. Coordination was a mess and she had no idea up until yesterday morning where she was going

Damn. Where are you now? Are you in contact with Mrs O?

Son woke me up with a courtesy call at 4 am

-He and his wife are safe. Back fence was completely ripped down when they walked around assessing damage, that's not a big deal
I wish he wasn't so eager to drive around outside his neighborhood but he went to check on his friends and family and their homes, one of them got 18 inches of rain
Lot of down power lines and poles that have been snapped, exits down several ways are blocked right now by debris and again, down poles and trees

-Rough estimate but it looks like a week+ for some folks that are going to be without power, could be longer for others

Roof ripped off the trop.
Drone footage below. Was being used as a shelter at the time.

Wow. I thought I had read that the Natioanl Guard was staging/staying there too. Hope all are safe.

We're going through the worst of it right now on the central east coast. 99MPH gusts reported at Ponce Inlet. That's all the way across the State after this thing has been slowed down. The eye is just pushing offshore now so a couple more hours to go...

So intense.

A few of the experts were flagging the fact that late heavy shear at landfall in line with the movement is not ideal. The tornadic activity for one was driven by shear. Usually it's opposing shear putting stuff off shore. This time it was SW shear putting tornadoes on land. Big ones.

Probably re writes the books for what is the worst case for a 2/3 landfall.

Lost power at 1 and was back on around 6. Son of a gun wind ripped my locked lanai screen door open last night. Impressive storm , never seen anything like this living in MA , feel fortunate to only have minor damage.
Where are you located?

My parents live in Naples. They were under a mandatory evacuation, but decided to stay because the house is on high ground and they have a generator that can power the house for days. Last message I received from them was around 11:30 PM last night.

If you want to check on loved ones, you can call the nonemergency county sheriffs number and request a wellness check. It may take a few hours, but you will get your answer. Hoping for the best for everyone…

Do they really have time to do these?

Yes

However, emergency calls take priority.

I love this service. We were stationed in Japan when Ian went through Fort Myers. Around the 36 to 48 hour mark of not hearing from my parents, I call the nonemergency number and had an answer from the sheriffs department within an hour…🤷‍♀️

We got spared. Overwhelmingly thankful. Neighbors said our roof is in place, windows secure, solar panels up. Unless there is an unseen roof leak we are good.

It’s a gorgeous morning in Georgia. My 6 year old is blissfully unaware and is now coordinating running a foosball tournament. He’s pitting the two grandmothers who don’t like each other much against each other in the first round lol. I’m afraid he’s gonna have a career in running numbers or something one day.

I’m about 30 minutes north of Naples. Unless your parents are close to water and subject to storm surge, they are most likely fine. The local news isn’t reporting much damage in Naples.

Any info on Matlacha and Pine Island?

I saw a video on TikTok that showed a reported tornado passing over one of the bridges leading into/out of Matlacha. It was a static security cam, so not the best footage, but looked rough. Fingers crossed for that area. We were there in 2023 and they were still recovering from Ian, now this...

Jim Cantore in Charlotte Harbor, FL right now

Huge storm surge and he's showing it all, lots of storm cameras and will be working his way up floors as the water continues to flow in

He is in a perfect spot depending on your POV
That is one helluva man
Or a loon. It's a fine line.
He's a showman and it takes one to know one
He interviewed a man on a little boat across from the Tampa General Hospital the other day and it was amazing and I wish I had the clip to share
Sometimes he gets egg on his face but a lot of times he shows things many of us would not want to experience but happy to watch him dive right in
Lieutenant Dan?
Yes. Just saw he was finally brought to a shelter.
This whole Lt Dan thing seems like a bit of a scam honestly.

My wife and I left for Brazil last Friday. I just heard from a neighbor two doors down that everything looks good at our place in north Lakeland.

It's been incredibly difficult to have a good time up until now. Hopefully we can enjoy what is left of our vacation knowing that our roof is intact and no broken windows.

Friend in St Pete isn't going back until power and water on (has small kids). But said they don't think they got storm surge, so barring wind damage, tree falling, etc, are hopeful.

Edit to add: Same for my brother, no storm surge though he's not heading back home to see how the rest fared yet.

Lost my flagpole. Neighbor across the street lost a tree that fell across the road . So not going anywhere for a little while. I lost a tree in my backyard that took out a section of fence. Plus it blew some facia out from the roof by the front door that's kinda weird. It could have been much worse.
My sister ended up not going as far as Miami with her friend but instead stayed with another friend of her friends that permanently resides in Naples.

She said there was a lot of tornadic activity but they are high and dry away from the coast and are all ok. Didn’t even lose power.

Thanks. Have family in Bokeelia...and yes, what happened to Matlacha is heart breaking.

Many older neighborhoods in Miami are working on putting powerlines below ground. And/or replacing wooden poles with concrete poles. It's expensive to do it retroactively. Newer neighborhoods have an advantage in that most have power and cable already underground.

After Wilma in 2005, there were major upgrades to the power infrastructure in FL. Irma in 2017 affected more customers but the power restoration was faster.

Another note about Wilma. There were sustained winds of 75-90 mph in the Miami area, mostly from the south, for many hours. I know several condo dwellers with south facing sliding doors on their balconies who had a lot of water intrusion through the door tracks.

From wiki: Approximately 2.5 million customers lost power in the South Florida metropolitan area, equivalent to about 98% of subscribers.[11] Electrical outages for each customer averaged 5.4 days. Wilma damaged close to 12,400 electrical poles and de-energized 241 substations.[9]

There is a lot of damage in Pinellas County, it is going to be a while on getting power back in some of these areas but the bridges are open to my knowledge coming and going
MoP Jr is packing up and driving down here to South Florida to spend a few days in Dad's air conditioned home, we never lost power thankfully

I had a feeling he wasn't going to like it after the storm finally passed.
I don't see how most businesses in Pinellas will function over the coming days and next couple weeks

With power out most folks can't work from home.
Also CELL COVERAGE is not good right now in Pinellas, my son and I were having trouble getting a clear connection, my guess is cell towers were damaged

In Asheville we got power back but cell service is still spotty

That's pretty amazing. My brother lives up in the mountains a bit close to Lake Lure and they had their power on this past Saturday. Couldn't believe it.

there are a ton of people on the ground and working between fema state and local governments and utilities so i can believe it because it is pretty amazing what we can get done when we all put our minds to it take that to the bank brochacho

This whole Lt Dan thing seems like a bit of a scam honestly.
Who's getting scammed?

If this Lt Dan guy is scamming people who just wanna see if maybe a homeless guy in an abandoned boat is going to drown or not, then I hope he scams as many people as possible.

If people are being morbid about it, then yeah. But seemed like most people were rooting for the guy who was sticking it to the man by heroically riding things out despite repeatedly being offered safer options.

Oh, and he has reportedly been arrested over 14 times including punching a police officer in the face while being arrested after smashing glasses in a bar, reportedly trying to set a woman on fire, and hitting an EMT with a violin among others.

Honestly, the sad truth is that he’s a guy that doesn’t have much, likely has a mental health/substance abuse issue, and is desperately trying to cash in on the attention because he simply doesn’t have many other means of making money or options in life. None of what is going on now is likely to positively benefit him long term.

My brother and his wife went to her mom’s house to weather the hurricane. My brother lives in Punta Gorda, in a mobile home community. They went about 12 miles North to stay at her mom’s. No damage and the only inconvenience was the power went out yesterday and is still out. He went back to his mobile home a little while ago, surprisingly the power is working and there is no signs of any damage from winds or storm surge. His community streets always flood during heavy rains, can’t believe that there is no flood damage from Milton, unless it still can come later on.
