Stage Breakdown

Hello everyone and welcome to the twelfth stgae of the Tour de France

After an hectic day (apparently, I was half alseep for like the middle 60km lol), the riders will finally get a taste of the mountains.

As usual with the Pyrénées, the big cities are pretty far from the mountains so the run-in is longggggggggggggggggggggg. We start in Auch, and we have about 120km of flat before we get to the foot of the Soulor. It's not all flat, there are some bumps here ans there, sort of similar to the first part of today's stage actually. In this there is a Cat 4 and the IS, so expect Trek and Wanty to go all in for the break for their boys because they won't be able to control.

After that, the Soulor, nothing crazy but a nice little entrée before the main dish later one, 11.8km at 7.3%. Descent isn't straight up down, there are some bumps here and there including the Col de Bordières along the way. At the bottom of the descent, it's straight up into Hautacam.

What is Hautacam? 13.5km at 7.8%, infamous for maybe the most surreal performance in the history of the sport, when Bjarne Riis, aka mr 60%, trashed everyone on his way up in 1996 in what is probably the pinnacle of the high EPO era. History hasn't been kind to this climb with Armstrong doing an incredible performance up there in 2000 and a Saunier Duval ****show in 2008, 3 days before pulling out of the race due to the doping cases of Ricco and Piepoli. It also saw a duel between Pogacar and Vingegaard in 2022, won by Vingegaard with a stratospheric WVA that day.

With that in mind here are our predictions:

★★★ Pogacar

★★ Vingegaard

★ Evenepoel, Breakaway.

Despite what happened today, Pogacar enters the day as the big favourite over Vingegaard in regard of the whole season so far. Considering it is the first mountain stage, there is a real possibility Pogi wants it, or maybe he doesn't want to waste too much energy ahead of the TT, which would also make sense. Visma will surely want the stage victory, via Vingegaard or the break, they have plenty of options. Remco would need an alignment of the entire solar system for him to win but it's never 0%.

The big question really is, does Riis's time on Hautacam falls or not?

That's it for us, what is your prediction for the stage?

Quinn Simmons has turned into an absolute beast. Gonna be a heck of a classics rider. On the days he's not in the break, he's pulling the pelton.
He and Onley have been the revelations of the tour to me.

So many good young riders on the WT right now.

For the record, roglic is not on my team. Lipo is though! :pickle:

Sorry man. Wish there was an easy way to pull all the rosters. Also my betting odds for this stage were taking me to stage 7. Anyone have an easy way to pull all the roosters?

Looks like the sprinters teams could hold this together today for quite awhile if they want to play at KM 95.

With Matteo saying he knew he was on a bad day, I'm not really sure why they contributed to pace setting That was a masterclass by UAE and Tadej. Drop Wellens for the 20km leading to Hautacam, good communication between Yates and Navarez to tell Navarez to go, and then pop. Navarez was already riding Jonas off Tadej's wheel before he pulled off.

If Tadej is truly 7-10 seconds per km climbing, well, there isn't anything anyone else can do.

Wow, Roglic rode well, moved up in GC position… and got surpassed on his team by Lipowitz and somehow looks further from the podium.

I wonder how much Lipowitz was riding for Roglic to this point and if he’d be closer to the podium if Roglic had been riding for Lipo instead.

Sorry to see Jorgenson fall off :-(

It’s interesting to see what happens to guys when they drop out of the peloton. Healy and Jorgenson fell way off while most of the nominal GC contenders kept up the fight for the podium.

Lipowitz shoul be the the leader he’s been barely ahead of roglic for a week. Tomorrow will clear things up. Unless it doesn’t. :lmao:
