From SF49er's fb page just a second ago...

"The Phoenix" leads the NFL in passer rating through five weeks.

The Phoenix? :P Is there a backstory to that nickname?

If you ever want to know what life would had been like if you grew up eating paint chips and sniffing glue, go to the 49er Webzone forums. They might have coined that there.

I was surprised to see the passing game this last week against Buffalo. I thought for sure that SF would just come out and play "SF" style of ground-and-pound ball.I'm not predicting the same level of success this weekend vs the Giants. But am I giving Harbaugh too much credit in that maybe he decided to show some passing game against a weaker opponent in part to make the Giants' game planning a bit more complicated? :tinfoilhat:Looking forward to a good game on Sunday, and (hopefully) some payback.
What most of us saw last weekend was Smith have a lot of time to throw back there, the offense working because of the play calling against a real bad defense, and Smith having wide open receivers that had defenders slow to react or blown coverages made Smith's targets bigger because the poor defense of BUF slowed the game down for him to a crawl. I'm sure they saw that too.

If anyone has a streaming link for the game today, I'd appreciate a PM...
Me too please!!!It's 5am in Maui right now and I'm hearing that I need to show up at the bar at 6:30am to get a good seat for the 9er game at 10am. Would love to watch from the lanai of my hotel room!

Well, Old Alex Smith showed up today. Which is the real Alex Smith.
Shocking post. :rolleyes:Why no mention of the secondary? They couldnt cover the WRs worth a crap. Also, there was almost no pass rush. But that had nothing to do with the loss I suppose? It was ugly, no doubt, but there's plenty of time to right the wrongs and get better. Lots of football left to play.

They got pressure on Eli (saw Ahmad Brooks getting after him, and Brooks is starting to become one of their better situational pass rushers as of late) but really, the score could have been way worse for the 49ers had they not held NYG to FGs. I'm not pinning the entire blame on Smith. But this is the game where the whole team could not mask his deficiencies like they had. This is the game where they could not carry him, like they did against the other NY team earlier this season. This game showed the difference between the two teams, and that's at QB.

It's hard to win with 3 points

Smith is not a good qb. He'll have the odd good game against a bad defense when his confidence is up but a game like this is impossible for him to win. Even when he has a good game I find his throws look lofty and floppy. He doesn't have much ability to zip it into really tight coverage or find the half open man. So when the 49ers go against a good team like the NYG that can rattle the qb...he falls apart. Its not surprising. He is just not the answer. The 49ers have a chance to make it to the superbowl but it will be despite Alex Smith not because of him. He has made a career out of throwing the extremely safe route, usually low and to the outside so no one can intercept it, but you can't win every game like that no matter how good the D was. IMHO he would be a lot better if he ran more but he just flat out plays an extremely conservative game.

In fairness to Alex, the New York d-line has made other qb's look like crap as well. JPP and company can rattle the best of quarterbacks.

They made Smith look like Smith of 2005. Once his footwork got happy early, it made his decisions worse later.

49ers homers, what are your thoughts on the matchup against Lynch this Thursday? San Fran seems to be allowing decent yardage to the better RBs they've faced this season, so I'm curious how you see this matchup playing out?

I would figure the first thing the 49ers would focus on is shutting down the run, and make SEA one dimensional. May sound like basic stuff, but I don't see Lynch clipping past 2.3 YPC.

Agreed. I see both teams doing the EXACT same thing. I find it funny that Harbaugh and Carroll loathe each other, but have built nearly identical teams in terms of philosophy and team chemistry.

If the 49ers don't dominate the Seahawks from the start, then #### really is concerning. They haven't lost back to back games under Harbaugh and as important as the NYG game was, this is the game they need to win of the two.

Patrick Willis not happy with Matt Millen’s criticism

Matt Millen, the former NFL linebacker and former Lions president who currently serves as a TV analyst, was unimpressed with the 49ers’ linebackers when breaking down San Francisco’s loss to the Giants on Sunday. When 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis heard that Millen criticized him, he wasn’t happy.

Millen said on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco that he thought Willis and 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman had the worst game he had ever seen the two of them play on Sunday. Willis later went on the same radio show, heard the same comments, and said Millen doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

“Whoever this Matt Millen guy is, I’d like to ask him if he could do what we do every day and do what we do for 16 games a year and see if he can hold up every game,” Willis said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “I doubt he would. I doubt he would be able to consistently play at a high level as Bowman and I do. I really don’t care about what this guy has to say.”

Now, it’s easy to rip Millen after his disastrous stint running the Lions, and believe me, I’ve ripped Millen plenty myself. But the reality is Millen did, in fact, play linebacker in the NFL at a high level. So Willis is wrong when he says Millen couldn’t do it. If Millen ever criticizes an NFL general manager for drafting too many bad wide receivers with Top 10 picks, that G.M. will be justified in saying Millen has no room to criticize. But Willis is wrong to suggest that Millen doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to playing the linebacker position.

Still, Willis may be right to think that people were too quick to jump off the 49ers’ bandwagon this week.

“We went in and everybody is on your bandwagon when you are playing good,” Willis said. “Everybody has everything positive to say and when you don’t do well, they got everything critical to say. For us, we are going to continue to do the things we need to do and that’s play football. Every game is not going to be a perfect game. Every game is not going to be your best game.”

What the 49ers need to do now is play one of their better games on Thursday against the Seahawks. If they do, they’ll be back to being clear favorites in the NFC West, and Sunday’s loss to the Giants won’t sting quite so badly anymore.
I hope someone reminded Willis that Millen was on the team that have one of those Lombardi Trophies in the case right inside the front doors of HQ in Santa Clara. He also was on another team that won another Lombardi that used to be in LA, but is now back in OAK. Millen has nothing to say from being a GM, but as a player, Willis needs to do some homework, especially his 49er history homework.

Wow, hope everything is successful.
Crazy. Hope Coach Harbaugh is OK.Any word on whether he will be on the sidelines Sunday? Who might take over if he isn't?

If smith stinks it up against the bears early, do you guys think Harbaugh will pull him for Kaepernick by pulling the concussion card?

What I'm enjoying more than anything is Aldon Smith and the rest of the defense beating the crap out of opposing o-lines.
I'm loving this!I wasn't watching the game with any sound on. I did see Moss having a word with Kaep on the sideline, did they mention what was going on?

Smith doesn't throw that pick today, but he also doesn't convert nearly as many third downs and probably gets sacked 4-5 times and kills a few drives. I hate that smith ended up benched after an injury, but don't see how they can go back to him.

Found this on twitter and thought it was interesting.

@ESPNStatsInfo: Aldon Smith: 1.5 sacks in 49ers win. His 30.5 sacks in his 1st 2 seasons are 2nd-most since sacks became stat in 1982 (Reggie White, 31)

I agree. I have a ton of respect for Alex Smith, given what he's been through and the class he's displayed. That said, the NFL is a machine and can't take that sort of thing into account... It's Kaep time.

So with Kendall Hunter and Kyle Williams both getting injured, I wonder if that could open the door for rookies AJ Jenkins and LaMichael James to get some playing time soon.

I'm not saying either could step in and make a big difference, but surely they could contribute. James could be used for kick returns with Williams' injury and Ginn's stupidity. I'm not sure if Harbs would trust a rookie in that role, but if could add some excitement to the return game. Or let him get a few carries that Hunter might have got.

As for Jenkins, maybe get him a few snaps to get the feel for the speed of the game...although with Crab, Davis, Manningham, Moss and D Walker all healthy, I doubt coach is in a hurry to get the rookie out there just yet.

Just thinking out loud here, lets discuss the rooks and when they might see some action.

I believe James is going to be active. Jenkins will definitely be active as the #4 wr. I don't have a strong opinion on James but am real excited to see Jenkins. Hopefully he's in great shape. I love his route running and ability to get open. Hopefully it will translate in an actual game.

The problem is Moss isn't even getting many looks from the QB, even though I keep hearing that he is open often. With the system SF has in place there's just not enough passes to go around to everyone. I'd like to see Jenkins come in and make an impact but I just dont see it happening just yet.James OTOH, could make an impact in the return game or in Hunter's role. Yeah, the return thing is more wishful thinking in my part, as I'm not big on Ginn or Williams in that role, but having a Sproles type player (not my comparison, going by what I've read) returning kicks would be exciting to watch.

I agree Jenkins is unlikely to put up much yardage. I'm most excited to see how he looks on the field. How well he runs his routes, how well he catches the ball when it is thrown his way, how tired he gets, how much separation he gets. James should be fun to watch as Gore's backup. I've read a few Sproles comparisons. Curious to see how accurate that is.

Maybe this is backwards thinking, but I've actually enjoyed knowing this season that the 49ers top 2 picks are still waiting in the wings to contribute. I think that says more about the veteran talent than the management's draft selection choices.

I don't have strong opinions either. I don't recall James doing anything spectacular in the preseason. I saw Jenkins get open a few times with his speed, but didn't make the catches.

Losing Hunter is a blow - but I can't help but feel optimistic about a high draft choice coming in with fresh legs at this point in the season. Between the two, I think James has a bigger chance of making an impact.

In any event I think both will suit up from here on out. Beyond that, what they can do with whatever snaps they get will dictate their rolls for the rest of the season.

I'd like to see what James can do, but he isn't a big RB. Hunter was coming along nicely too.

Smith would have took the sack. There was one play earlier this season where he did roll out and throw one away, but he rarely does that anymore. It's like he has become stat concious.

Harbaugh said he will name the starter Wednesday. I'm hoping Kaep starts, but I'm not so sure.

Alex wasn't cleared to play until Saturday. Not knowing if he would be cleared nor not during the week, Harbaugh gave Kaep all the 1st team reps in practice. He kind of had to. What if Alex had got those reps and then wasn't cleared to play? I think Kaep was named the starter because Alex's status was up in the air at the time, and once cleared on Saturday Harbaugh knew that if Kaep struggled, Alex could come in. I think we could see Alex start this week.

I hope I'm wrong and Kaep is the starter from here on out.

Bowman agrees to a 5 year extension.http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/Bowman-Agrees-to-5-Year-Extension/72a30236-5dd7-4f90-b135-a7b5b0b76eb9

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have agreed to terms with LB NaVorro Bowman on a five-year contract extension through the 2018 season. The 49ers now have all four of their starting linebackers under contract through at least the 2015 season (Ahmad Brooks - 2017; Patrick Willis – 2016; Aldon Smith – 2015).
Awesome news. I was nervous he might want to test the FA market after next season, but then again, ILB don't really seem to make a big splash in FA. When can they start negotiating with Smith to extend his rookie contract?

Aldon's agent is probably gonna hold off on an extension until after the post season. If Aldon goes into beast mode in the post season, his value then skyrockets.

Hells yes.
