Official 49ers 2012 thread (4 Viewers)

Aldon's agent is probably gonna hold off on an extension until after the post season. If Aldon goes into beast mode in the post season, his value then skyrockets.
Yah, I was just wondering if there are any regulations that restrict when you can renegotiate the original rookie contract?

I believe James is going to be active. Jenkins will definitely be active as the #4 wr. I don't have a strong opinion on James but am real excited to see Jenkins. Hopefully he's in great shape. I love his route running and ability to get open. Hopefully it will translate in an actual game.
The problem is Moss isn't even getting many looks from the QB, even though I keep hearing that he is open often. With the system SF has in place there's just not enough passes to go around to everyone. I'd like to see Jenkins come in and make an impact but I just dont see it happening just yet.James OTOH, could make an impact in the return game or in Hunter's role. Yeah, the return thing is more wishful thinking in my part, as I'm not big on Ginn or Williams in that role, but having a Sproles type player (not my comparison, going by what I've read) returning kicks would be exciting to watch.
I agree Jenkins is unlikely to put up much yardage. I'm most excited to see how he looks on the field. How well he runs his routes, how well he catches the ball when it is thrown his way, how tired he gets, how much separation he gets. James should be fun to watch as Gore's backup. I've read a few Sproles comparisons. Curious to see how accurate that is.
I'm not concerned with Jenkins numbers the rest of the way, but I'd like to see him play well. Here's some info about the WR situation:
Replacing WilliamsThe 49ers' three best wide receivers are Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham and Randy Moss. Williams was the 49ers' best slot receiver, so when the 49ers went with three wides, Williams was on the field, along with Crabtree and Manningham. After Williams' injury on Sunday, the 49ers used three wides on only one play: Manningham was in the slot, with Crabtree and Moss flanked out wide.Moss has 32.5 percent of the 49ers' offensive plays this season. He has been on the field, mostly, when the 49ers go with two backs, two tight ends and one wideout. But it becomes a question of which remaining receiver the 49ers believe is the best in the slot. If the answer is Manningham, then it will mean a lot more playing time for Moss.Manningham showed good short-area quickness when he lined up in the slot in the first half with Frank Gore on the outside. Manningham ran a whip route that left Saints cornerback Jabari Greer scrambling. He turned it into a 40-yard gain. When the 49ers drafted Jenkins with the No. 30 overall pick, they touted his versatility. He spent the summer learning each of the three receiver spots, including the slot. Jenkins has yet to play in a game. And his only chance to make a big contribution now will be to convince the coaching staff that the trio of Crabtree-Manningham-Jenkins is better than Crabtree-Manningham-Moss.

I wanna see some 4 WR sets with Crab, Moss, Manningham and Jenkins, and let Kaep air it out. Just a few times a game. TE stays home to pass protect.

Tonight on NFLN: A Football Life with Eddie DeBartolo and how he and the 9ers were brought down by a corrupt Louisiana governor.

File under "comedy."

Ah the good ol' days. Congrats on the win - that defense is ##### championship good.

Tough loss to swallow today against an inferior St. Louis team.

I'd put about half of the loss on Kaep's shoulders. We definitely saw some growing pains out there.

First, he should have never been in the end zone for the grounding / safety play; he ran back about 8 yards before heaving the ball. Some blame there goes to the refs for not getting the call right.

Second, for the fumbled - pitch play, I split the blame three ways on that one. First the coaching for calling it in the first place. Then Kaep for the bad toss, then Ginn for not falling on the ball or punching it out of bounds. WTH was he thinking trying to pick it up? I'm ready to call it quits on Ginn, he almost lost the game for us last week too.

Third, Kaep running out of bounds before we kicked the field goal with about 1:30 left in the game. He wasn't picking up any yards, so at least he should have made the Rams burn their timeout.

The rest of the blame goes to the coaches for the mediocre gameplan, and Goldson (?) for the penalty when he hit Bradford sliding. And something's clearly not right with Akers. He'd have been money on that last year. (And again some blame goes to the coaches, why are they playing for that 50 yard field goal knowing Aker's isn't solid instead of being more aggressive to get closer?)

Equally concerning is how they handled the running game and Gore. They should know he won't hold up using him like a workhorse, yet they did nothing to ease the load.

Yes, I think we lost the #2 seed today. SF lost to an inferior team and I'm sick to my stomach. But Harbaugh will (and should) stick with him. The damage has been done, now he has to see this through.

I'm as dejected as I've been all season. Let's hope they turn it around.

Agreed. I also want to pile on 2 guys mentioned. They have to think about unloading Akers. He cannot be relied on from 40+ and kickers in today's game need to be able to do that. I'd probably give him 1 more week. Also, if Goldson wants franchise FS money he's out of his mind. He's good for multiple boneheaded plays per game. He's a plus run defender and isn't a total liability in coverage, but that's 7-8 million better spent elsewhere.

The Rams aren't as inferior as you think.

The Rams aren't as inferior as you think.
You guys are building a great team and will surely be strong contenders for the Super Bowl in the near future. Right now they're definitely inferior to SF. Plus this is the homer thread. Whining, complaining, and being bitter after losing to a division rival and hurting the playoff seeding are expected and somewhat encouraged. TIA for your understanding.

Harbaugh needs to manage the game better. The weak hand option up against your own goal line was idiotic. Then the shot at the endzone after the 2 minute warning saved the Rams another 40 seconds. No way in hell they should be passing or running the edge. Gotta force St.Louis to come out of that drive with no TOs and under 90 seconds. Kaep has gotta make better decisions as well but the HC can't be rolling the dice in spots where a mistake is going to be magnified like they were.

Brandon Jacobs Suspended

Looks like Harbaugh is making his point clear about what happens when you challenge him. I had no idea about his twitter/instagram pics etc. I did find it odd that it was Dixon in on that 1 yard td, instead of Jacobs as I assumed that's why we brought him in to begin with. I guess this explains it. Although I'm glad, I've always liked Dixon.

Good. I hated the signing, he brings nothing to the table, let him go somewhere else and be overpaid.Suspended the rest of the reg season without pay? I didn't know a team could do that.

Lol, Jacobs says he wants to be released and that the only team he is willing to play for is the Giants. What a buffoon.
:goodposting:
In recent days, he posted a series of photos of himself playing for the Giants -- and even a picture of his two Super Bowl championship rings, side by side."I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners," Jacobs said in an Instagram post Saturday. "This is by far the worst year I ever had, I'll tell you like I told plenty others."On Twitter later, Jacobs said: "I don't understand why people are angry at me because I wanna do what I am paid to do, I am a competitive person, I think people should be mad if I didn't wanna play. ... As for all of my Instagram photos I don't have any niner pics, if you'll find me some pics I'll put them up."
Good grief there's an unbelievable amount of stupid coming from this idiot.

Yup. We've really needed his 5 carries for 7 yards this season. Lol. He should know and accept his role on the team. With Gore/Hunter/Dixon here, how many carries did he think he was gonna get once he was healthy enough to even play? The funniest thing about this is Giants fans on Twitter telling him they need him and would love to have him back.

He sucks.

Yeah I doubt he plays in the league again.

Harbaugh sticking with Akers. :wall:

SANTA CLARA – Despite David Akers’ inconsistency this season, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is not considering replacing his kicker "at this time," he said at his Monday press conference at the team’s practice facility.

Akers converted two-of-three field goal attempts on Sunday in New England, missing a 39-yard attempt late in the first quarter, but making a 20-yard attempt as time expired in the first half and a 29-yard try late in regulation to essentially put the game away.

Still, Harbaugh would like to see Akers find his rhythm. The 38-year-old veteran has made just 25-of-35 attempts this season (71.4 percent), and has missed five of his last 16 tries over the last six games.

"The specialists, sometimes they only get four or five opportunities a game. You’ve got to make the play,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve got to see him do it. We’ve got to see him make those plays."

Akers, a long-time kicker for thePhiladelphia Eagles before he joined the49ers in 2011, set an NFL record with 44 field goals last season.

Late last month, the team worked out unemployed veteran kickers Nate Kaeding and Billy Cundiff.

He won them a lot of games last season. He's killed them a few this one. That's why the move to Kaep makes more sense now.

Injuries mounting fast...this season isn't gonna end with a ring, but that's okay, this team will contend for years to come. Harbaugh took a team that had finished .500 or worse the previous 8 years and they will finish 24-7-1 or 23-8-1 in the reg season since he was hired.

Its fun to be a 49er fan again.

It's always rough the week coming off a big loss, but they still have a shot this year. How many teams can lose two of their top 4 wide outs and slide in a first round pick? I'd be afraid of going into Seattle again obviously, but I don't hate any of their other matchups in the playoffs if Justin smith makes it back. They win this week and they won't have to go to Seattle, and it looks like the NYG are out of it. Long term, if they were able to identify a long term QB in Kaepernick, that's the second best thing that could have happened to the franchise (outside a SB win) this year.

I'm seeing a tired defense that is in desperate need of a 1st round bye.
Back to back away games to NE and SEA was brutal especially how SEA is playing right not, but if it is any consolation, they do get the Cardinals at home. On paper, that's the best they could ask for. Besides, GB has no easy game @ MIN. Here's to hoping he breaks the rushing record this week.

With Manningham done for the year, who else do they have after Crab, Moss, and Jenkins and Ginn :X ?

Somewhere in LA, I'm envisioning TO anticipating a ring on his cell phone...

I know I'm probably in a very small minority, but IF he's still got some talent, I'd support bringing him in. It'll never happen but still, if he can help I say do it!This team is still a contender. Seattle gave 'em quite the beatdown but it's just one game. If Justin Smith is back I think this team has as good a chance as any to win it all.

What are the odds the Niners give Alex Smith one last snap/series in the Arizona game, especially if they have the game in hand at some point? It's obvious he won't be here next year and the guy deserves to go out with an ovation for being such a classy dude during his tenure here.

Bummer. Even if he plays in the post season we won't be nearly as effective as he usually is.

If/when we get bounced in the playoffs, people can blame the QB switch all they want, but the bottom line is its tough to win in this league when injuries mount up like they have in SF recently.

True, but part of the justification behind switching to Kaepernick this early was that he'd be able to give us more of a fighting chance if and when we got behind in a game. I'm excited to see how he handles adversity in the playoffs.

He had that "deer in the headlights" look in the Seattle game, but I still think SF made the right choice in going with Kap. As a Seattle fan I would rather they stuck with Smith. I just don't think Smith is ever going to be special, but Kap just might be. Time will tell. Also, I understand that the SF faithful is down this week, but I think you guys have a ton to thankful for. Your defense is still better than the Seahawks on a neutral field.

I can just see eyes rolling over in SF after reading this tid bit from Vernon Davis. It was on national TV. Everyone saw it in super slow-motion over and over. I know Davis had a tough time making fans a few years ago when Singletary was the coach. Has he made other comments similar to the one below? How does a home team fan deal with that?

http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_22269374/san-francisco-49ers-vernon-davis-practices

SANTA CLARA -- Tight end Vernon Davis practiced Thursday for the first time since sustaining a concussion in the 49ers' 42-13 loss Sunday at Seattle.Davis participated in a limited, non-contact role and appears on course to play in his 91st consecutive game Sunday, when the 49ers (10-4-1) host the Arizona Cardinals (5-10).

"I'm managing, and I'm taking it one day at a time," said Davis, who sustained the first-quarter concussion on a sideline hit by safety Kam Chancellor to break up a potential reception at the Seahawks' 2-yard line.

Davis confirmed his head took the brunt of the impact and that he didn't sustain a whiplash effect. "Everyone thought he hit me in the chest, but he hit me in the helmet," Davis added. "It happened so fast."

Davis still needs to pass an impact test to officially be cleared for Sunday's game.

After watching the slow-mo replay, it looked like a clean hit to me. The only thing I could think of is first impact on the chest and the crown of the safety's helmet rolling up to the bottom of Davis' facemask. He doesn't even hit his head on the ground when he falls on his back.

It looked very similar to the Goldson hit on Hernandez that I didn't think should have been flagged a week prior, but that was from memory as I didn't go back and look side by side.

Crabs had a career game today. Go Crabs. The WR corp is depleted though. Jenkins with an easy drop, Ginn doesn't lend any confidence, etc. Gonna need to unleash Moss.

Also Walker dropped an easy TD. I think we can be okay with Crab, Moss, VD and Walker, but it ain't gonna be easy.

This is especially true if your coach insists on playing every defensive player for every snap of a game. If the back-ups get zero game time, then your depth really suffers.

49ers working out 2 kickers: Billy Cundiff and Justin Medlock. Neither strike me as much of an upgrade, but we gotta sign somone.

David Akers goes from first team All-Pro, leading scorer in a season in 2011 with 166 (a record that was held by Jerry Rice), to a train wreck in 2012. In the past two seasons he has attempted almost 100 FG - starting at the age of 37 to 38 - with 52 in 2011, and 42 in 2012. Is that too much to ask and 'old' kicker? Morten Andersen and Gary Anderson who kicked until almost 50 years old never attempted more than 50+ in a season their entire career.

Please. It's a field goal.

From 63 yards it ain't "just a FG".
