Official 49ers 2012 thread (4 Viewers)

Of minor note, things must be really bad with AJ Jenkins, that even Chad had a ball thrown his way after being on the team less than a week.I wonder what the long term prognosis is for that 1st round pick.
I didn't even think about this when I heard about Hall being activated. I'm gonna go see if I can find something on Jenkins.
Yeah, it didn't occur to me either. Good point though. I didn't expect him to be a stud right off the bat, but if still isn't getting activated it's time to raise some red flags. :lmao: at 6Rings. Hoping two weeks from now you'll be sending a PM to the mods asking for a name change.

49ers opponents next season:

Home: Seattle, St Louis, Arizona, Atlanta, Carolina, Indianapolis, Houston, Green Bay

Away: Seattle, St Louis, Arizona, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Jacksonville (in London), Washington
Tough schedule, but two good breaks: Getting Washington instead of NYG, and having 7 road games and one very winnable neutral-field game.

The only interesting thing I could find on Jenkins was that he played in a season high 19 snaps in week 17 vs ARZ (28% of the offensive plays), but his only target ended in a dropped pass, and he did not understand a play-call in the second quarter (resulting in several players telling him to move from the left side of the line to the right side of the line, and then pull back from the line of scrimmage).

So maybe hes having trouble with the playbook

Also, Jenkins and Alex Smith were the only active players to not receive a snap in the NFC championship game vs Atlanta.

Good find, Wingnut. Not good if he's still having trouble with the playbook. But Kaepernick didn't hit the ground running either. From a Cohn interview with Harbaugh. Fairly cookie cutter stuff

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers’ first round pick, A.J. Jenkins, did not catch a pass in the regular season. He was not a contributor. This afternoon, Jim Harbaugh was asked if Jenkins can contribute in the playoffs. Here’s what Harbaugh said.

Q: Where is A.J. Jenkins in his development? Can he contribute in the playoffs?

HARBAUGH: Do I think he can? Yes. Do we need him to? Yes. We need him to step up. Definitely think he’s capable of doing it.

Q: Crabtree has dominated a lot of the targets. Do you need someone else to step up alongside him and take the pressure off?

HARBAUGH: I think we have that. I think we have guys – Randy Moss, Delanie Walker, Vernon Davis, Frank Gore.

Now, A.J. Jenkins? Capable? Yes. Step up? Yes. Definitely think he can do that.

LaMichael – same situation. He’s been doing a nice job in that department.

Also, if we're going with some Niner wr history, let's not forget John Taylor didn't do much his first (or second) season. There's no real way to spin Jenkins still not playing as a good thing, but that doesn't mean he can't still turn into a great player. He just needs to work like crazy this offseason and he'll get a chance. Unless Harbaugh is planning on unleashing him in the Super Bowl! :excited:Or maybe Chad Hall is an underrated gem. :banned:

Harbaugh will probably keep Jenkins inactive and use that roster spot for a utility guy. Whether Jenkins pans out or not doesn't matter. They are pretty deep next draft as far as picks, so they can get another WR in the later rounds who just might pan out more than Jenkins.

I agree with you it doesn't matter as in they'll be okay either way, but if he does pan out it gives SF all the more flexibility. Always nice to see the picks pan out.

I will say that LMJ didn't overly impress me in preseason, but I think he's starting to get acclimated to the speed of the game. Weird that Hall was in over Jenkins in that situation last week regardless of "being in a package" however. My faith in management coupled with flashes from Jenkins in preseason still gives me high hopes. I just think the stakes are too high right now to try their luck with a rookie WR.

Can the 49ers still sign a kicker? Akers has to be mentally :wall: right now
I didn't think so, but this article hints to the fact that its possible for him to not make the trip. http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2013/01/20/david-akers-will-kicker-get-the-boot/
Pretty rare to hit the uprights square like that, gotta give that to him. Too late to sign Cundiff back? I'd be willing to roll with the "Player payback vs his old team" card.
As bad as Akers has been, at least he misses consistently to his left. Cundiff is just all over the place when he's off.

re: AJ Jenkins, I read earlier in the year that he's trying to add strength & weight... was in the bottom 10-15% of bench press for WR's iirc.In any event, at this point it's a non-issue for this season, clearly. No way he has a meaningful role in the SB. Beyond that, we'll just have to wait and see.

I do recall noticing how small he looked out there (I think it was the Miami game)... reminded me of Brandon Lloyd in his early days (even he still looks small though). AJ def needs to bulk up a bit.

Hell, even Jerry and his drops wasn't looking great as a rook until that MNF game explosion.Ah, I'm reaching :) You got me thinking back with the JT reference, DA.

@Rus, good post.

new name on order :banned:

It's not like Jenkins is really needed right now. Not even in returns. Putting Chad Hall out there shows he is not ready this season. He'll have a whole off-season to maybe work with the GOAT running The Hill. But it doesn't mean they stop at finding another WR in case Jenkins turns out a JJ Stokes or Rashaun Woods.

What are the odds they throw the first to the Vikings for Harvin? I've read rumors Min is looking at moving him. Moss is likely gone after this season (I assume). I think it'd be the perfect pairing with Crabtree. Although that'd be two first rounders in back to back season spent on WRs. Most mocks have niners picking a DT at the end of the first.

They need to restock the D-Line more than the WR corp, because Sopoaga is getting up there in age (he was drafted in 2004 IIRC), and Justin Smith has only a couple years left in him to play at level his is now. The 49ers of recent haven't made any HUGE FA splashes outside of Moss and Mannigham, and they were fairly cheap as far as long term cost. The 49ers like to build and reload with the draft, and I doubt they spend any first round picks to land a FA when they have a ton of mid to lower round picks this coming draft to manuver with to move up. Besides, the 49ers are fast reaching the Cap ceiling, and sooner or later have to deal with Aldon Smith's contract. I think defense is on higher order.

Do you think Kaep will get a deal similar in number to Alex's? Curious why you mentioned Aldon's contract but not Kaep's.

Well of course they have to consider Kaep's as well. I was thinking D-Line at the moment. I doubt Kaep will get 2012 Smith $$ though. He will probably get more.

Sopoaga is an UFA after this year, btw.But all told, the off-season picture is pretty rosy. WR needs to be addressed, DL needs some depth, Goldson will be an UFA, but other than that, nobody else important can walk. Smith's departure will free up some cash too.

Don't forget Kicker! Funny, two Erickson era picks are still with the team: Andy Lee and Sopoaga. Brian "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" Jennings is a Mooch era pick and still on the team as well.

Crazy to think that the last time the 49ers were in the Super Bowl the internet as we know it didn't even exist yet, and I'm pretty sure almost none of us were online yet.1995 is often considered the first year the web became commercialized.Yeah, its been a while.

Crazy to think that the last time the 49ers were in the Super Bowl the internet as we know it didn't even exist yet, and I'm pretty sure almost none of us were online yet.The first widely downloaded Internet browser, Mosaic, was released in 1993. Its considered the first browser to make the Internet easily accessible to non-techies. Also, both the White House and the United Nations came online in 1993, marking the beginning of the .gov and .org domain names.1995 is often considered the first year the web became commercialized, and two of todays biggest online businesses got their start in 1995 - The first sale on "Echo Bay" was made that year (Echo Bay later became eBay), and Amazon.com also started that year.Yeah, its been a while.
I was just thinking how the internet has changed the communication of discussing sports by posting in the FFA NBA thread. First: the use of stats, and how poor the use of those stats are with lazy arguments over numbers that historically can't truly be weighed due to era's, circumstance, and such. Second: the television coverage of past to recent. Third: the combination of the information combined with real time coverage with increased technology that can capture a moment frame by Hi-Def frame (see: Rory McIlroy's stokes on any given hole off of any grass, Kentucky blue, on hybrid Bermuda, etc) that have way more analysis than Jack Nicklaus' game in 1976. Fourth: How metrics and the numbers are irrelevant to the actual game due to the competitive and commercial nature. Case in point: ESPN's QBR. Fifth: How the individual belief system is more about pwning somebody else than the actual game itself, without a complete understanding of a any given team or individual player. The Fifth point is key to this. Back before the Internet, my info was based on traditional news sources, which is totally gone the way of the Dinosaur. The classic descriptions of games I couldn't watch on TV were in the prose of a Chick Hearn, Lon Simmons, Kieth Jackson, etc., on radio and television. My favorite all time sports writer is Jim Murray. Nobody, not even the corporate Bill Simmons comes close to Murray. I used to actually buy information off the newsstand. That was when information was competing for my dollar. Now in a Google News search, I get Bleacher Report. The Fast Food of sports info, with idiots who can't even get your order right at a Taco Bell writing for that crap site. What it comes down to is who and what you believe, where you decide where you get your information from, and ultimately you will not agree with anybody who justs bases what they believe on the same info you get. Because this is all free info now. You don't have to pay for it, whether on the newsstand or a punch in the mouth. It's ultimately gutless all around.

I would nut myself if that happened. Harvin's one of the most exciting players in the NFL and would make the pistol that much more dangerous.

Trust me, I'm looking forward to the day, in a few years, when I take my 2 kids backpacking. The GPS is going to get a bath in a stream and the kids get to learn how to read topo maps like I did.

I have to admit, adding in a WR that can really run would make things even more interesting. Imagine having all three there at the same time...

Oh man, this would be my first time ever spending so much on an experience... but you never know if they'll get here again, so I figured I would splurge. Based on what I've gone through so far, I'd say the hardest part is securing a ticket.I'm suppose to meet up with a local season ticket holder that was selected in the drawing at the Will Call window at the Stick tomorrow morning. My fingers are crossed that the deal goes as planned.

Report: 49ers interested in trade for Jets' Darrelle Revis

The 49ers are "highly interested" in trading for New York Jets' cornerback Darrelle Revis, sources have told CBS Sports' Mike Freeman.

According to the report, the Jets are "strongly leaning" toward trading Revis and teams are beginning to saddle up their assets to acquire him -- demanding first- and second-round picks for the four-time Pro Bowler and 2009 AFC Defensive Player of the Year.

Other teams listed in the report as mutually interested in Revis include the Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, though the latter two are unlikely to happen because they are division rivals of the Jets.

Revis is coming off knee surgery in October after tearing his ACL in the third game of last season against Miami.

Could be a rumor, could be true. Who knows at this point. But its always fun to speculate.

How would you feel if SF gave them Alex Smith and a high draft pick for Revis? Who would be the odd man out - Brown, Rogers or Culliver?

 Congrats, it should be awesome. I love Acme Oysters too :)I kinda shot my wad on Giants WS Tickets, going to be tough pulling this one off...but I'm trying.
Dude, best wishes in that you score some tix. Totally envious of you. :crossesfingers:
Thanks, Drummer!I am ecstatic to report that I'm a proud owner of 2 seats in the dome. :banned: In fact, the person I purchased the tix from knocked off a couple hundred dollars since the seats were not in the level he advertised. Nothing better in the craigslist world than dealing with a reasonable seller. :thumbup:I'm in the building! :excited:
Bunch of jealous Niner fans up in here, including myself. :DDude have a blast, take some pics, have a bowl of guumbo for me, and report all the craziness when you get back home.
Thanks, Wingnut! I fully expect to partake in all of the above. These guys better win! :football:

Without going into salary cap ramifications or dealing with the reality of Revis holding out in another year or two despite having a contract in place, omgomgomgomgomgomg please let this happen. One of the best corners in football and in the prime of his career? What team wouldn't be interested? We'd be fools to not at least poke around. goldenchild - along with everyone else, super envious. Hope it's the experience of a lifetime!

To answer your question wingnut, I think Rogers would be the guy to go. Really not sure how SF could work a long term Revis deal into the mix. But dumping Rogers' contract doesn't save us much. SF has about 4 million in cap space. They'll certainly clear room dumping Alex (either by trade or cut). They've got some fat they can trim (cutting Akers and Goodwin would clear up about 7.5). They need to bring back Sopagoa. They'll surely restructure a few more deals. iirc Aldon and Kaepernick can both re-work their deals after 2013 so there needs to be money for that. But to hell with it. SF already spends more on defense than any other team. Why stop now? If you're gonna dream, dream big. C'mon Revis! :excited:

Michael Crabtree allegations reportedly not holding up By Gregg Rosenthal Around The League Editor Published: Jan. 23, 2013 at 08:40 a.m. Updated: Jan. 23, 2013 at 12:03 p.m.San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree has not yet been cleared following a chances of avoiding punishment.A San Francisco law enforcement source told the San Francisco Chronicle that Crabtree's accuser was one of three women with him in a hotel room on the night Crabtree is accused of assaulting the victim. The other two women have reportedly said that Crabtree didn't assault anyone. On top of that, investigators have reportedly found no physical evidence for the attack. The accuser went to police four days after the party that Crabtree was involved with.It sounds like Crabtree will hear one way or another about the case before the Super Bowl. Police chief Greg Suhr said he hoped the investigation would be wrapped up in the next 10 days. The 49ers expressed public confidence that Crabtree would not be charged in the wake of the event, and that confidence appears to be warranted.
Crabtree with 3 chicks? :excited:

I wouldn't want to pay Revis. The niners have a ton of talented young guys. If they want to have any shot at keeping those guys around after their rookie deals are up, they can't afford to spend a large percentage of their cap on one guy.

Hey, 9ers fans from one of the FBG Ravens fans. Good luck next week. This is one of those games for me that, if Baltimore doesn't win, I'm not upset with the other team winning. How do y'all see the game going? I'm thinking fairly low-scoring - maybe 21-17 or something like that. I think SF is the better team all-around, yet the Ravens are on a karmic high.

Baltimore is one of my favorite non SF teams. If we don't win I'll find solace knowing Reed/Boldin and some of your other guys win a ring.I don't know if this is actually true, but my perception is Flacco can be a bit of a gunslinger at times - a guy who doesn't hesitate to pull a smart Rex Grossman (ie chuck it deep). I do know he doesn't turn it over much and he's honestly the piece that scares me most. Dude has been on fire for you guys. I could see this game becoming a wee bit of a shootout. Nothing like Packers/Cardinals playoff game a few years back, but right now I'm picking the over. Maybe a 30-26 affair. With SF winning, of course! :excited:

 Flacco's similar to Eli in that he has some games/halves where you wonder how he's even in the league. "Joe was on drugs yesterday" is one of the most common phrases after a Ravens' loss. My admittedly non-expert opinion on Joe:I don't think Cam ever trusted him and I think that tied Flacco in knots. He'll never have the pocket presence of some of the best and he doesn't protect the ball under pressure as well as he should. However, the O line has been fantastic the last month and Caldwell has - epiphany! - let Joe throw across the middle. Flacco's not as reckless as Favre (ain't as good either) but he appears to be coming into his own as a QB who can make some good decisions. The SF pass rush petrifies me, but so did Denver's. I haven't watched the 9ers enough to know how good they are in coverage. I know Jones, White, & Gonzales put up huge numbers last week. The Ravens' receivers actually mirror Atlanta's pretty well, but half a point below. And ATL didn't have Ray Rice.Honestly, I have no idea how to handicap this game. Kap is a rookie who doesn't play like one. As usual, I think it comes down to TOs & penalties.
