***official*** all things Microsoft Xbox One (1 Viewer)

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/06/microsoft-reveals-xbox-one-headsets-arent-included-with-base-system/

They are taking away your current headset and not even bundling a cheap new one?

Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory. Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire.
It seems like Microsoft is looking back at the PS3 launch, soaking up every mistake that Sony made, and repeating it.

I can't imagine the Kinect being a suitable replacement for a headset. Forget the microphone, voice chat coming through your speakers just doesn't work. And I do not want to hear everyone yelling down to their wife to grab them a beer or telling their kid that daddy is playing xbox right now, much less all the kids running around in the background. All stuff that a headset (and a mute button) would filter out.
100% agree.

Agree. If 3rd party headset makers can create adapters to make XB1 headsets backwards compatible with X360 then I dont see why they cant create an adapter to make the current gen headsets work on the XB1. This is about the only item that might make it difficult for me to be an early adopter of the XB1. My headset is a must and I dont really feel like getting a new one right now.

Making something forward compatible is much harder than making it backward compatible.

True. But from looking at the interface on the new Xbox headsets it looks like they are using a mini-USB to connect to the controller. Obviously the old legacy headsets arent going to be able to channel all audio and chat through this connection. In the case of my Trittons, which are wired, they would still need to connect to the optical out on the XB1 for game audio and to the controller only for chat audio. I can't imagine that the infrastructure isnt there to allow this. I could see this being a sticking point for many gamers who have shelled out alot of money for their current Astro's, Trittons, Turtle Beach or Sennheiser headsets. I'm willing to pony up the $500 for the XB1 but less likely to do so if the $200 headset I currently have has to be replaced.

Well theoretically I think you could just use your old headset for game/chat audio and the kinect for outgoing chat.

Yeah I guess you could. But I dont know if I want to do that. Plus if the Kinect is so sensitive it will likely pick up any other human speech in close proximity to the console will I be able to mute the kinect? You guys dont want to hear my kids.

Or my roommate, if you guys ever see me sitting idle its because in getting a beer or he is trying talk dirty into the mic. Seriously how do they expect the xboxone to be a media hub in a house hold and be the only thing in use in the living room at one time. I love my 360, but they are just plain dumb.

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/ent-time-warner

This is interesting, especially as a (reluctant) time warner customer. If this sort of thing continues on XB1 (which I don't see why it wouldn't) then the "replacing your cable box" thing could be much more of a reality, instead of relying on IR repeaters, etc.

This sort of thing would also let me put my 360 in my bedroom after getting an XB1 and get a full range of TV channels without paying for another physical cable box.

eta - I would think more partnerships may be announced moving forward (Charter, etc.)

I'm not sure we would be able to hear your kids over your megaphone, Spanky

This thing wont be able to tell if I'm playing in the nude, right?

Because when I play COD, I prefer to play Commando

Am I that loud, GB???

According to Wiki:

The new Kinect camera uses a 1080p wide-angle time of flight (in comparison to the VGA resolution of the previous version), and processes 2 gigabits of data per second to read its environment. It has greater accuracy with three times the fidelity over its predecessor and even the ability to see in the dark thanks to its new active IR sensor. It has an up to 60% wider field of vision that can detect a user up to 3 feet from the sensor (compared to six feet for the original Kinect) and will be able to track up to 6 skeletons at once. It can also detect a player's heart rate, facial expression, 25 individual joints (even thumbs) and the precise rotation of such joints, the weight put on each limb, and the speed of your movements, and track gestures performed with a standard controller.

Sounds like you should be good, no worries.

Yea, I think I'm out for the next generation then. This thing sounds way too creepy.

Or map a spell (say, bound sword) to snapping your fingers? I could see that being very useful. How about winking one eye to shoot a spell? If it worked, that would be very cool, wouldn't it?
Wow, this sounds like the complete opposite of very cool.
Ok.

I disagree (although maybe my examples are bad) - I just think using Kinect to perhaps map certain things opens up all kinds of options.
I hear ya. Skyrim is a good example. Where normally, I'd have to go into my menu, over to spells, change from Heal to Ice Spike, then unpause. I'd love to just skip all that crap and say "Ice Spike".
Tech demo.

So the guy who was in charge of the Xbox division left to be CEO of Zynga. He was the one on stage during the release who also gave remarks to the press.

I doubt he left of his will....it will be interesting to see if any further changes happen as a result.

Based on what I read Zynga pursued him and gave him the CEO to save the company. I am thinking he got paid real well to make the move and I doubt he was forced out.

It'll take a will of God or a deal with the Devil to save Zynga.

I dunno, he seems to have messed up this whole XB1 thing pretty well. Then again, those are the type of qualities it takes to get into the C-suite.

Pincus is the devil.

Under Mattrick's leadership Xbox saw its user base go from 10 million to 80 million. Xbox Live’s went from 6 million to 40 million active members. Not to mention his leadership in the SIM world. SIMs has sold 150 million units. Lastly I guess you can blame the XB1 debacle on him but I think we all know those decisions came from significantly up MS ladder or at least were blessed there.

So it seems the free for gold that promised Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3 as free games and alluded it in July never actually said july. So no word on when they'll actually be coming.

Saw 2 minutes of Jimmy Fallon tonight where Fallon stated that the PS4 is the only system to support used gaming. Sony rep (justifiably) just went right along with him.

Perception is reality.

That may have been a rerun. Jimmy Fallon was on with a PS4 rep the day before the reversal and did the same thing. Fallon has been given partial credit for the reversal because of it.

Here's are some new IGN videos you need to see.

The first is Project Spark. Simply incredible, and I believe it's free for the PC and Xbox One: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/19/project-spark-little-hype-lots-to-like

And a new Dead Rising 3 video that's worth watching: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/20/dead-rising-3-banana-hammocks-body-parts-and-badass-weapons

I was a little worried about the Xbox One at first, but in seeing this video, newer Dead Rising 3 videos, etc I'm completely stoked about the console. I've got the console, a controller, Battlefield 4 and Dead Rising 3 on Amazon pre-order. It's gonna be an expensive November.

Indie Self Publishing Allowed on X1:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/24/independent-developers-will-self-publish-games-on-xbox-one

Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten provided the following statement to IGN:

“Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox Live. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox Live. We'll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.”

X1 to allow Mods:

http://www.nowgamer.com/news/2018003/xbox_one_to_support_mods_its_up_to_developers_says_major_nelson.html

In a first for Xbox, it looks likely that Xbox One will support mods.

Following news that any Xbox One can be used as a dev kit, it was asked on Reddit if this means the console would support mods.

"It's up to developers to support that," answered Microsoft's Major Nelson. "These are two very different things."

His answer suggests that the capacity for modding is there, if developers create games in a way that will support it.

Xbox and Xbox 360 didn't allow for mods but the recent Xbox One policy changes are positioning the new console to be the most open console Microsoft has made to date.

Interesting promotion by Gamestop.

Gamestop offers $50 credit with trade of select 360 games for Xbox One versions

Gamestop will offer $50 trade-in credit to PowerUp Rewards members who buy a new, Xbox 360 version of a game and then trade it back in for the Xbox One version. The promotion is valid for the Xbox versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Madden 25, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4 or Assassin's Creed 4.

In order to be eligible to receive the trade-in credit, patrons must be PowerUp Rewards members at the time of the initial purchase, which must take place within 30 days of the game's release date. Then, upon trading the game in for the Xbox One version, the customer will be emailed a $50 coupon that must be used before December 31 of this year.

No mention of the PlayStation 4 was made in the press release, so whether a similar offer will be made for PS3/PS4 cross-generation games remains to be seen.

My kid is at the age where he's "graduating" from a Wii to an Xbox. I don't know a thing about gaming consoles. I see where I can pre-order the Xbox One from Microsoft. Should I go ahead and do that so we have one for the Holidays? Is there apt to be a shortage?

Like I posed in the PS4 thread, Walmart is running a deal where you put $40.00 down and you can pay monthly payments or just a one time payment at launch date (but you have to have it paid off by 12-13) and they will guarantee you a console.

I bought my PS4 that way. I don't want to wait in line and I don't want to take the chance of not being home when it gets delivered and some UPS guy leaves it on my porch.

There is at least some possibility of there being a shortage. The new Xbox is only launching in a relative handful of countries this year, and one rumor is that that's due to production bottlenecks. It stands to reason that Microsoft would bend over backwards to avoid any shortages in the US, but you never know. I would preorder to be safe.
