***official*** all things Microsoft Xbox One (1 Viewer)

I've mentioned several times that Microsoft's lineup of exclusive hardcore games took a nosedive after Kinect came out. It's conceivable that that's just a coincidence, but it's consistent with my hypothesis.

One other note: I'm very open to having a second gaming platform this time around. I can afford two consoles. The PS4 is kind of immaterial to all of this. What is material (for me) is what's available on alternative consoles that I can't get on the PS4. If we're talking PC or Steam Box, the answer is "a lot." If we're talking XB1, the answer is "not much," and Kinect is part of the reason for that.
I support your right to speculate based on limited information. You may be right. I certainly don't know if MS consciously decided to spent a larger portion of a limited budget on kinect than buying exclusive rights. But thats still just a guess by Ivan from the internet; let's not pretend like you've just handed down economics gospel here (and at best it describes issues with exclusivity, not whether far cry 15 is getting made).
I should probably wait another couple of weeks to revisit this point, when the performance of certain titles on certain platforms is 100% confirmed, but I think it's worth noting that Microsoft's decision to double down on Kinect meant cutting corners on hardware in order to keep the Xbox's price point at something reasonable. If that results in certain games -- certain very big names -- running worse on Xbox than they do on PlayStation, would that be enough for you guys to finally concede that Kinect has been a net negative for non-casuals?

If I had an Xbox preordered, and obviously I don't, I would be livid over the stuff that's swirling around out there right now. And it's all directly attributable to Kinect. There is absolutely no reason why Microsoft couldn't have built a system that would match the PS4 step for step if they hadn't been handicapped with a $100+ camera.
can you link some of this, I am very interested

There is a rumor flying that the Xbox One version of COD Ghosts runs at 720p while the PS4 version runs at 1080p. Nothing confirmed of course, but that's never stopped the innerwebs from crucifying something before.
Right. Also, Battlefield is "rumored" to be 720 on Xbox and 900 on PS4. The sneer quotes are there on "rumored" because this has been confirmed by multiple independent sources in the industry who have no reason to lie.

I know you're one of the guys who won't read Gaf, but those folks have been consistently breaking news and getting right all year. If you followed Gaf, you knew about the DRM situation, the specs gap, and now this. If you relied instead on press releases from Microsoft (or Sony for that matter) you've spent the past bunch of months in the dark and mostly misinformed.

Fair enough. I don't read GAF. I know they've broken a lot of stories there, but I barely keep up with the stuff I want to follow around here. The articles I've read have been mostly rumor and speculation, but that has been mostly on the more mainstream gaming sites.

You're quite a console warrior, Ivan. Jeez, this isn't a political election. Anyway...rumors abound about both consoles these days. I can rattle off a few for your entertainment. Though number 2 is not a rumor.

1. Arthur Gies tweet hinting that the PS4 version of BF4 may not be able to run 64-player multi. https://twitter.com/aegies/status/394278804614434816

2. Kevin Dent posts on GAF regarding the Internet blow up today about Sony not allowing anyone access to the retail PS4 prior to launch. As well as Xbox being more dev friendly in that any Xbox can be used as a dev kit, Sony not allowing HDMI game capture, nor EVER allowing any reviewer to capture their own video for reviews. Instead, Sony will provide them with canned gameplay in a controlled environment of Sony's. This one is not a rumor. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=87628981&postcount=1056

#1 isn't even a question. Both Playstation 4 and XBox One can run 64-player Battlefield 4. In fact, in the link you provided, he's stating that it's the only distinction that makes the Playstation 4 next-gen, in his opinion. He's not questioning or hinting that it can't.

Yeah, Ivan, you know Im a fan of you but I certainly can't take anything you type with regards to consoles seriously as you're as biased as they come.

To be fair I am not saying I'm unbiased. I was certainly in the 360's camp but liek every single new generation I'll go with whichever system is better for my needs. No brand loyalty here. In fact, I'm sorta hoping Sony is better but ONLY if they get the online right.

Worst case scenario is the ONE is underpowered but has the far better online aspect and the Sony is crazy powerful but the online is the crap I read about in the GTAV thread.

You're quite a console warrior, Ivan.
That's the thing -- I'm not actually a console warrior. I opted for the PS4 against the Xbox, but I've posted several times in multiple threads that there are good reasons why a person might reasonably go the other way, and I'm on record that Titanfall is far and away the best system-seller of near-launch titles, with nothing else even close. I was unhappy when Sony announced that online would no longer be free, and I mentioned in the other thread that I'm also unhappy with BF4 not hitting 1080p on PS4. I'm giving BF a little bit of a pass here because it's a bigger and more ambitious game than COD and Killzone -- I'd rather have a 900p BF4 with 64 players than a 1080p KZ with 24 or whatever it is. But really 1080/60 should be standard for next gen titles regardless and I'll be ticked if PS4 games routinely fail to hit that target. You can feel free to quote me on that as often as you'd like.

What prompted this bump last night is that I got called a fanboy for making completely uncontroversial statements that happened to reflect negatively on the Xbox. The first is that it has weaker hardware than the PS4. This has been common knowledge since last spring. I'm not a tech guy, so if people were going to argue about whether Sony's 8GB of RAM was better than Microsoft's 8GB or RAM, I wouldn't be qualified to have an opinion on the matter. But following along with sites like Gaf, where people actually do know what they're talking about, revealed that there's really no argument to be had there. So now that we have two different multiplatform titles running non-trivially better on one console than the other, I think it's fair to say that I was right about this and I wasn't just being a fanboy.

The other point is that every resource going into Kinect is a resource that can't be used elsewhere. Kinect was absolutely a commercial success for Microsoft. It sold a boatload of units and a major selling point for the XB1. Slax is right that from a strategic perspective, Microsoft had a good reason for bundling it with the new Xbox. All I said is that you're not the kind of person who likes Kinect games (and I'm definitely not), it is a net negative for the console because it drains resources that you would have liked to have used someplace else. In this case, it certainly looks like the joint decisions to put Kinect into every SKU and to keep the price point no higher than $500 forced Microsoft to skimp on hardware. It's not like their engineers couldn't have matched the PS4, but they can't match the PS4 and include Kinect and keep the price reasonable. One of those three had to give, and it was hardware.

By all means, feel free to buy an Xbox. It's not like games are going to look like #### on it or anything -- it's a big upgrade over the PS360 era. Enjoy Dead Rising and Titanfall and the other flagships like Halo. Just don't tell me that I'm delusional for stating the obvious. I'm not a console warrior, but I do enjoy following the industry, I like to be right, and I don't like being told that I'm an idiot for posting stuff that is true.

 OK.
I started to post a response to this, but since you just disregarded a four paragraph explanation of how and why I arrived at my position on some of this stuff, I realized there's no point in typing it up. Enjoy your Xbox. I'm sure you'll be happy with it, and all that really matters is that people buy the hardware and software that fits their personal preferences.

Here's the thing. You keep posting this stuff in the Xbox thread. When's the last time you contributed to the PS4 thread?

If the PS4 thread was active, I'd be there. I post all the time in video game related threads. That one is just dead. Sorry.

All you did was continue to state as fact your speculation that you arrived at using limited facts and a clear and apparently unacknowledged case of homerism. It's just as likely the MS just made another design screwup (if your facts are even right) as it is that all the console's problems are the result of this kinect boogeyman you have constructed.

That's fine. We're going to see how all this plays out over the next few weeks and months regardless.

IK is the goonsquad of PS. Just have to fight through it. Goonsquad didn't actually contribute anything outside of his ifanboy stuff so it was easy to ignore. IK seems to somehow take way too much pleasure in bashing XBL, nearly ignore worthy, but not quite there yet.

I've really enjoyed the substantive posts in this thread so far... can we all try to refrain from the :pokey: and stick to the important stuff?

That seems to be a bit of overstatement at a minimum.

I'm an XBox fanboy and I don't really see anything IK said that is in dispute. The PS4 does have better hardware. But so did the PS3 and that didn't necessarily mean anything. There were plenty of games that, on the PS3, were inferior graphically or technically or both to their Xbox counterparts. I'm sure the reverse is also true.

ETA: Wasn't referring to his speculation about the Kinect and exclusive titles. The rest was covered on the previous page anyway so whatevs

I don't really get what the camera adds to the equation. I'm not going to skype anybody.
This probably does nothing for the mid-20s guy who lives alone, but as a parent, I would love being able to use this with my daughter when Skyping with relatives (grandparents, brother, nieces, etc.). Microsoft has said from day one that they want this to be a media center device for the whole family. This is a big element of that.

I used to be a big PC guy. I could write some small code. I was fluent in DOS. Fast forward 25 (30) years and I don't use skype. You know why? Cause I have to download it and get all the setting right and then when the mic doesn't work on their end I have to walk them through it and.....

When I saw that I immediately thought to myself ..Oh, wow, I'll actually use skype now."

It isn't anything that cant be done already, but its packaged nicely and more importantly, will work flawlessly, every time more then likely on xbox (which is ironic cause their PC stuff rarely ever works well). I could see all these little extras having major crossover appeal for the dreaded "casual" buyers out there.

ETA - The NFL license will be HUGE if it's exclusive to the ONE.

Exactly. And I'm definitely moving into the casual buyer category at this point in my life. I've used my PS3 10x as much for Netflix and Bluray than for actual gaming. That will probably be the case again for me for the next generation of consoles as well.

Based on the Dark Souls thread I find that a bit hard to believe. Hardly seems casual.

Moving there he said. I used to buy 20+ new games a year. Now I play Dark Souls A LOT I admit .

I just started playing NCAA

I'm all but but done with GTAV and really only play when my friends are on.

I'm not buying anything not named Dark Souls II. Unless that bombs I'll play that for at least a year before buying the new system .

The ability to switch faster between applications is pretty nice but none of that Kinect stuff is interesting.
I love the idea of being able to switch to apps, etc without actually having to navigate to it.

"Xbox, Netflix" is much better than guide button->scroll right->scroll right->scroll right->apps->Netflix

What would really be a win is if you can use it to invite people to a party or game. It's a pain to have to navigate through the menus while you're in a multiplayer match to invite someone.

I thought that video did a nice job of showing off the Xbox interface and illustrating its role as an entertainment hub. I don't do a lot of switching back and forth between gaming and television, but I do do a little of that on Sunday afternoons if the late games aren't particularly appealing. But I'd like to have the option to check back in on football without having to switch boxes. Not that it's a huge deal or anything, but the Xbox does do that seamlessly.

I'm not the target audience for the all-in-one hub and I don't see myself ever using Skype, but the UI is definitely slick.

Yea, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't still a serious gamer. I do play a lot less now and I refrain from buying almost everything these days.
