***official*** all things Microsoft Xbox One (1 Viewer)

Target shipped some of these out early and Microsoft banned the console when the guy posted an unboxing video on youtube. They also had the video removed saying it was copyright infringement.

Haha yeah it was funny watching that unfold yesterday evening. The guy threw up tons of screenshots of the UI, etc. And of course his gamertag was in all these screens too. Anyway, Microsoft bans his console but not his gamertag. Which tells me they just don't want him online and possibly downloading more games before release dates. He's still playing with the console offline though. I'm sure on Nov 22, they'll lift his ban otherwise that's some bad PR right there.

I find that impossible to believe. At most you're talking about spinning it off into a separate company. The Xbox brand and install base is too valuable to just eliminate.
Sure, but they claim not to be making much money at all off of it.

The Xbox1 seems designed with monetizing the users in mind though.
This is hard to believe too. Granted, I haven't looked at Microsoft's books so I could be totally wrong, but if the Xbox wasn't profitable either directly or indirectly, I doubt Microsoft would have launched another one.

So now corporations control the products you legally own. What tos did he violate by opening and playing something he bought and was legally delivered to him? What copyright is he possibly violating. #### Microsoft.

By allowing them to use Netflix and Skype easier?

I agree that it is hard to believe. Just seems to be what they have released publicly and the reason people here were arguing they needed to shut down the resale market.

It's not like his console is bricked. He just can't sign into live with it until they lift the ban. This guy is still playing on his Xbox One at this very moment. Yeah, #### Microsoft for protecting their unreleased product until it's ready. Some of the features are still unfinished and they don't want people judging an unfinished product.

By building it to eliminate the used gaming market. By including a camera to not just see who is viewing content and advertisements, but their physical reactions to it.

Sure the have backed down from the former for now. However, it is clear both are parts of their long term plans for their new media center.

The guy bought his console legitimately. He didn't steal it or trick anybody into giving it to him early. And he was providing Microsoft with some free PR. Whoever decided to ban him needs to be fired, not so much because they're evil but because they're idiots. This kind of episode just serves to remind everybody why Microsoft no longer enjoys much consumer goodwill.

The Xbox division is massively in the red over its lifetime. A lot of that is from the original Xbox, but even the 360 as a "success" lost a lot of money. They started turning a profit on the 360 a few years back but we're talking about profits in the millions which barely even chip into the losses in the billions that came from the console's early years. Now, when they're still not even close to making up all the losses on the 360, we're back into a new console gen where they'll once again start out with massive losses. Microsoft keeps it around as a loss leader to get people onboard with the MS ecosystem, which they're trying to really push this gen with integration and a common interface across all their devices including the Xbox.

This is not the first time the rumors of selling the Xbox division have come up. They also came up back during the One's initial announcement.

There are only three ways to make money in the current gaming market. You either have to completely dominate the entire generation like Sony did with the PS2, or you have to build an underpowered machine that makes money on the hardware like Nintendo has done with the Wii and Wii U, or you have to try and find ways to make more money like MS wanted to do by eliminating used games and by getting people to use their Xbox as their living room media center to buy movies, etc.

Realistically, if we have another generation like the last one where MS/Sony are a pretty even split, it may be the last console we see from either company as the only way they can both stay afloat is via the company's other divisions and at some point they have to make a decision as to whether or not its worthwhile to keep those massively unprofitable divisions around to help their brand image. The good news is that the gen after this one will almost certainly be digital only which will pretty much knock out used games once and for all, so hopefully they'll see that as a reason to keep going.

I see this but have a hare time believing it. They've charged $200 plus for consoles the entire generation. The console is 8 years old and I have to believe the hard is super cheap now. Plus Microsoft is charging $50 for Live, plus they make money downloadable content, plus they make money from games. How could they possible have lost so much with such a large install base this generation? Sounds to me like movie studios claiming that movies never make money because the studio allocates tons of non-related cost to the movie.

Please don't read hype and conjecture.

What actual ways are they monetizing this platform today, that are confirmed that aren't already present in the 360?

I'll read what I want. Not sure why Microsoft should get the benefit of the doubt here.

Well, it sounds like they spent over $100mm on R&D for the Xbox One controller.

i am officially old.... none of this excites me anymore :kicksrock:
Having a kid put an end to my gaming, but I'm not to impressed anyways. I haven't seen any launch titles that have blown me away, and all of the social / kinect / smart features I doubt I would use anyways. The last xbox had a bunch of that crap, as do most smart tv's and I rarely use any of them.

I don't mind not gaming right now because I figure in 3-4 more years I can start gaming with my kid, and 6-7 more years we will be pwning n00bs together. :hifive:

Any chance whatsoever of getting one on Friday without a preorder. I'm like a moth to a flame. I'm thinking campout at Sears or Costco. Anyone?

So you don't have an answer? I'll take just one way if you have it.

I've heard some people have had success on Amazon. Turn on one-click purchasing. Go to the item and refresh from time to time. It seems once in a while Amazon will release a batch of consoles, but you've got to be right there to snap one up.

For brick and mortar, many will have a certain number of non-preorder consoles on hand. If you're desperate you could call ahead and see if they have an exact number and if you can get one in the store before midnight. They won't let you out of the store until midnight, but you may be able to grab one early and hang out in the store.

Microsoft store, if you have one near you, has some on hand as well.

Darn, you just missed it on Amazon this morning. They had Day One consoles for sale at 8AM Eastern ...but only for about 4 or 5 minutes.

Regarding the Xbox One controller, I'm pretty happy using rechargeable AAs in mine. If you guys pick up rechargeables, get eneloops, btw.

I guess nobody really paid much attention to this feature, but I thought it was really amazing. Especially compared to the PS4's Dualshock 4 controller only lasting about 8 hours before it needs to be recharged again.
"But you won't spend a lot of time worrying about batteries.
We haven't been able to fully deplete a charge on our controllers in a week and a half of constant play
. While the controller's micro USB port won't charge a pair of rechargeable AA batteries — that will have to be done separately, just like the Xbox 360's controller — it will disable the controller's proprietary wireless connection in favor of the direct wired connection. It's a small but valuable improvement from the Xbox 360 controller.
One of the most exciting additions to the controller is actually behind that unusually long battery life. The controller works in coordination with Kinect to monitor its use. When you put the controller down to watch a movie, it enters a low-power
state.
It’s a smart way of extending the utility of Kinect in a practical way."

When it comes to listening, Kinect has one hell of a keen ear, but it's dumb as a rock at dealing with background noise. In the best of conditions (in my smallish-but-not-tiny apartment, alone) Kinect voice commands work with 90-95 percent accuracy, and at absurd distances, quiet volumes, even with pretty poor enunciation. I was able to lay in bed, some 30 feet away, around a corner, and still use "Xbox go home" successfully without really raising my voice. I was able to tell Xbox to pause music from in the bathroom with the door open. But not while I was peeing, because that noise was enough to mess it up.
:lmao:

Read some mixed reviews for both consoles. I think I'm waiting and currently slightly leaning towards PS4 but some of the XBOX stuff does sound cool...

I don't care about all the social stuff on either console though ... getoffmylawn

I think that's the article I read that made me think that it would never work in my house. I've always got the kids or my wife talking or yelling in the background. But the article is actually very positive about the Xbox One, for those who haven't read it and are just going by the quote above.

Just picked mine up. The box is nice. I'm going to leave it in the box until after I take the next part of the CPA exam on Dec 6th. Can't have too many distractions.

Was eleventh in line at Target this morning. They only had 10 of the green boxed ones and 16 of the pre-order Day One units. Checking Kmart and Sears at Lunch time.

Ouch. I can see myself standing in line counting then number of boxes, counting the number of people ahead of me, and then desperately counting the boxes again hoping that I messed up the first time.

Good luck.

I did a presentation at the Microsoft store yesterday morning. When I left at 12:30 there were already 6 people in line outside.

I camped out for the 360 and honest had fun doing it. People had generators, TVs and their xbox playing halo tourneys and even portable heaters.

With that said I would never do it again. By the time I got home I was too exhausted to even play.

If there was such a thing as Nerd Heaven, I can't imagine a better way to get in than doing something like this.

They were in stock at the MS Store at 1 am this morning, but the site was crashing and my order didn't process.

I'm waiting on the UPS guy. Unfortunately, we're usually late in the day for UPS deliveries. And it's really cold outside today. I may have to let the Xbox acclimatize before I power it on. Ugh.

Decided not to wait. Downloading the update now. I have Forza Limited edition and will probably buy one other game digitally. Walmart has all Xbox One games for $49 today if anyone is looking for games.

30 minutes to install BF4.

First impressions. Love the controller...

the rest does not feel like "next gen". I am not a kinect user so I skipped all that crap. Everything else looks to be a water downed version of what I can already do on my pc that i have hooked up to my tv.

I got up at 5 AM pacific and scored a Day One edition that way. It is a good thing too, because most of the kids here are hoping to get one as a joint Xmas gift and until the other day they looked like they would be SOL.

How is BF4 on XBL right now?

BF4 obviously is not going to look better on either console than it does on PC, but the next gen version is a huge upgrade over the PS360 version.

Edit: Seriously question. If you're a PC gamer, why buy a console at all? You guys have a better game library and vastly better specs. I don't get it.

I had 4 crashes in a row when trying to play conquest. The map would load and then it would crash right to the xbox home screen. I went into a domination map and it worked absolutely fine.

Few of my real life buddies PC game, so thats why I swing both ways. I also wouldn't call it a HUGE upgrade in graphics though it is better.
