Looks like MS is trying to make right with the folks with malfunctioning consoles...http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/26/users-with-malfunctioning-xbox-ones-compensated-with-free-game
Well, ####. I wasn't offered anything. Or maybe something will come with the new box out of the blue. I guess we'll see.
Gave the chat thing a go and dude there (who was pretty cool) scored me Forza. It will take me forever and a day to download the thing, but it looks awesome, anyway.
 Nice!

My xbox could have a faulty drive.. I'll never know. Going all digital this time around. I play so few games now that I can wait for sales that will inevitably come.

I'm not the only one who thinks that MS and Sony will both have to start implementing Steam like sales in the next year am I?
Actually yeah, you probably are. Sony and Microsoft both routinely sell digital games for twice or more than what you would pay if you bought them at retail. New games still sell for the standard $60 price point, and older games typically see their prices fall much faster in stores than they do through PSN or XBL.

Another factor is that even this time next year, there aren't going to be a large number of "old" games that can be sharply marked down. The games that might be candidates for Steam-like sales are likely to end up as PS+ or "Games with Gold" titles. (I forget the exact name of Microsoft's free-games program).

That's not to say that you'll never see sales from either manufacturer, but I've seen no indication whatsoever to think that either firm is planning on this.

Probably need Steam to steal some set top sales before Sony and MS respond. With that said I went looking for a copy of Dark Souls. I went to several different sources including Amazon and a couple of Game Stops. The digital version was less than 2 dollars more than the average discs I found including used. I am going to spend the extra buck fifty and get the digital version.

If you call them back and metion this I am sure they will hook you up. I remember dealing with MS support when there was a recall on the 1st Xbox. It was half a year before the 360 launch and my console died. They said it would cost me $100 to replace. I said no, they said $60. I said no, they said free.

I disagree with BB2K3 about the graphics for BF4, but I agree with him that if you're on the fence about whether to jump to the next gen or not, you can sit tight with the current-gen consoles for a while. Neither of the new consoles has anything particularly great to offer in terms of games yet. Come back in February or March and reevaluate things then.
The big downside for waiting is losing trade in value on your current console. I think I'm going to lose $50-75 by not taking advantage of some of these trade in offers right now.
Best Buy has/had a trade-in program that gives you $100 for any working 360 or PS3. It was no hassle at all the only catch is it comes on a Best Buy gift cards.

That trade-in offer expired Saturday. I would have done it had I known that I was going to get a XBO on Sunday. Oh well... going to try selling my old, fat PS3 on craigslist... hope to snare close to that amount.

Well I am not rushing out to get a one. I'll let everyone else deal with bricked machines and stuff. And even when I do get one I have no intention of getting rid of my 360. Given all the stuff about backwards compatibility and all I feel like it will be worth it to keep as long as it works.

I can't wait for the steambox.
I couldn't either until I saw that controller. I'll wait to pass judgment until I can try it, but virtual thumbsticks on a touch screen are the entire thing that makes gaming on tablets so unbearable. This looks way too similar.
I'm worried about that too. I hope the system will accept using third-party controllers (like a 360 controller) if that one blows.

This. I still like my 360. I still have a bunch of games to play , including Rocksmith. I've got Dark Souks 2 coming out in March, and when I do get my xB1, this 360 will just get taken to a different room for the kids to play and have access to Netflix/Amazon.

and when I do get my xB1, this 360 will just get taken to a different room for the kids to play and have access to Netflix/Amazon.
This is exactly what I did with the PS3. I moved into our bedroom not for gaming (wife would murder me) but for Amazon.
Blue dot while gaming. Make it happen and you will be a king.
I'm married . I would be happy with the just the blue dot part.
Most married guys would be happy just with the gaming part.

Is there a way to initiate watching DLNA content on the Xbone? I'm a bit annoyed about how challenging it it is to access content on my NAS servers. The only workaround I've found so far is to push content from my tablet via media server software (ArkMC). Anyone have a solution?

10 minute call to MS net'd a free DL of Forza.

Told support about my controller disconnecting every once in a while. They're sending me a new console & Kinect and told me to download a new MS game for free.

My friend's has a bad optical drive. They're sending him a new one, but who knows when. He asked for some type of compensation and was told having a new one sent was compensation enough. If you pay for something in July and then it doesn't work, why not throw him free xbox live at least?
Something for your friend to try: People have had success in repairing this. Get the game in there out (there is a manual eject). Unplug it. Turn it over and whack it a couple times over the drive system (or hit the system on the ground). Evidently something is stuck with those drives and gets put back with a bit of manual TLC.

Sadly my problem requires a new console - no easy fix.
Glad I went the console replacement route. My problem wasn't the brick - it was the console. I am now away for Thanksgiving and have loaded up 50 gigs of stuff for the machine to download while I am gone.

Fingers crossed the darn thing is working when I get home tomorrow.

Anyone news on getting these without a preorder soon? I'm not buying one of these for a little while but it has been inquired upon about a possible gift so..

So let me get this straight, you are unable to play 360 games on the one. Was at Game Stop and they had a couple XB ones so I got to the checkout and was told only XB one games will work on the one, so I passed. Can anyone enlighten me on why would you by a XB one especially with limited game out now.

Xmas gift for/from dainty?
From my mom possibly. She has done the standard tshirt, thermal, socks or other stuff since I was 17 but this year she is getting my brother a new tv so she asked me if I could use anything that is in that $$ range. Dainty gave me the evil face when I told her I might get one for Xmas because I had planned not to because we are going to England in January. But the death stare was from pure gelousness as she she wants one to.

The XB1 and 360 use completely different architecture. That's why the new consoles aren't backwards-compatible (the PS4 isn't either). Getting a last-gen game to run on next-gen consoles requires a full-blown port.

You're right that for most people there's little compelling reason to rush out to buy a new console right now. Neither one has a particularly great launch lineup, and that's not going to change until next spring. If you're happy with your 360, just wait until March and check back in then.

Because you want to play one of those games.

All of the unclaimed preorders at each Best Buy will go on sale Sunday morning. Be there before they open as the stores had lines formed for the unclaimed PS4s last week.

Because the games won't always be limited to the launch titles out now? Nobody's making early purchasers make that choice, they know what they're getting into.So for you, it obviously makes sense to wait until their are some games you're excited about. Some people just can't wait to get their hands on the new hardware and UI regardless of the launch lineup.

And, of course, they are probably more excited about the launch lineup than you are.

I've got Dead Rising 3 and Battlefield 4 right now.

Dead Rising 3: I can't put this one down, it's so so fun. I think the trick to success in this game is to early on, unlock the "smarts" perk or whatever it's called which will make weapon/vehicle blueprints and hidden statues show up on your player's rader. This makes it much easier to find these things and after no time you'll have a massive number of combo weapons and vehicles available to you. And make sure when you do find these blueprints, immediately make that combo otherwise it won't be added to your weapon locker and car lot (where you spawn every time you start the game).

Battlefield 4: Well, being a Halo guy and light COD player, BF4 takes some serious gettin' used to. It's a much more realistic shooter than what I'm used to (no quickscoping, hopping to dodge shots). It's really fun with really big maps. 64 vs 64 is fantastic. Needless to say, I suck. Like a 1:10 kill:death ratio kind of suck. I've heard a lot of issues exist on all platforms with BF4. I've not seen it outside of:

- Single Player campaign doesn't save. No biggie for me right now since it's only a 4 hour campaign anyway (so they say).

- Sometimes after a multiplayer game finishes, I'll get kicked back out to the BF4 start screen. No biggie either for me, but certainly DICE needs to fix this stuff.

Xbox Fitness: I tried this out last night for the first time. It's pretty cool. You have dozens of workouts (P90x, Insanity, Jillian, etc). It's free through 2014 which is nice. I did a Jillian 30 minute workout last night. It's very P90X-ish, but a bit shorter than your average one and it's a mix (cardio, weights, chest, abs) versus a particular muscle group. The Kinect shows your image during the workouts in a small window. And it monitors if you're actually following through on the moves and you score p oints during each set. It compares you against others in your age group, and your previous workouts and friend's workouts (if you choose to allow your workout scores to be visible to others). Lastly, you can rack up some pretty good gamerscore. I got 75 gamerscore yesterday in that one workout.

Digital Games: I've gone full digital so far this generation. Yes, it's more expensive as I could have bought some disc games on sale on Amazon, TRU, etc. But I tell you, being able to fire up the Xbox, and just hop right into any game you feel like without popping in discs is worth the extra few bucks a game I may pay. Truth be told, I'm open to discs for games I may not hold onto like Madden 25, COD or others. Basically the non-keeper type games.

Kinect: We've got multiple people in our house with gamertags all under our one gold account. If any of us walks into the room, Kinect recognizes us and says hello. It's kind of nice to walk downstairs and say "Xbox On" as I'm walking to the couch. It turns on itself, and my TV. It sees me and logs in my gamertag. My custom dashboard comes up. I can just jump right into any of my games instantly (nice to be digital!). I frequently adjust the TV volume by saying "Xbox volume up/down". I haven't tried any in-game Kinect stuff except for getting the attention of zombies once in a while in DR3.

Overall Impression: I'm really happy with the console so far. It's quiet - can't even hear it unless I put my ear up to it. The launch games are decent, and some great ones coming up next year (Titanfall, Halo, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break). Digital games seem to make the console feel much more next gen in the instant game switching, snapping, etc.

Love Dead Rising. I am still just at the start, but it has been a blast so far. I pretty much just want to get in a vehicle and run zombies over. I tried multiplayer once on BF4 and kept getting stuck in one spot. Also ended up with a 1:13 score :hifive: , but it really didn't seem to be too fair at that point. Still, I suck.

Want to put in a good word for Need for Speed: Rivals. Huge fun to drive around. My 8 year old just loves the game. Awesomeness all over the place. I take over and have as much fun.

On the other side, big thumbs down for Forza. The microtransaction thing is outrageous. And it seems to have a bug that won't allow for split screen racing, which sucks. Very frustrating. Luckily this was free for me.

Very excited for Titanfall and Below to hit the shelves. Both of those look incredible.

Big fan of Dead Rising as well. I'd be up for trying the multiplayer if anyone is interested. GT is bakes716. As a warning I am awful at most games.

I wanted to pick up NFS:Rivals but heard it doesn't have local multiplayer (ie split screen racing)? Is that true? Would want to play with my kids.

No split screen. I wish it would be added, even as a DLC. I'd buy.

The first Xbox One system update has released today. One thing about Microsoft is they've always been good at console updates. http://majornelson.com/2013/12/10/xbox-one-system-update/

I wanted to let you know that later today a required Xbox One system update will become available. This update works a little bit differently than what fans are used to on Xbox 360. Here’s what you can expect:

A. If you are using the Xbox One “Instant On” (the low power state that allows you to instantly power up your console by saying “Xbox On”), your console automatically checks for updates when it you turn it off. Once we make the update available (on Tuesday, December 10th, 5:00 PM PT) this means the following will happen:

Your console will automatically download the update after you turn it off. Once the update has been downloaded in the background, your console will power completely down. Please note: You will need to manually power your console back on after the update has been downloaded. Because the update will power your console completely down, the “Xbox On” voice command won’t be available until after the update is fully installed.
When you turn the console on you’ll see the update being applied. After that, your Xbox One will reboot. You’ll know the update is installing when you see the Xbox logo on the green background (like at the top of this post.) This can take anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Once the update has finished installing, you’ll boot to the Home screen and you’re all set.
Don’t worry, if you are out of town for the holidays, you console also does regular checks for updates and will download it in the background even if you have not used you Xbox One in a couple of days.
B. If you are not using the Xbox One “Instant On” feature, you will be required to download and apply this update after Thursday, December 12th at 4:00 PM PT.

This update addresses the following:

Addresses SmartGlass issues for some users when coming in and out of connected standby
Addresses multiplayer issues for some users when re-joining games
Addresses issues with inconsistent notifications for some users
Addresses dashboard performance for some users
Offers improvements for Xbox One’s TV, system update, and content update services for scaling over time
Updated wireless networking driver to improve connectivity issues for some users
We’ve got quite a few updates planned for the next year based on the community feedback we’ve been seeing, and I’ll have details on those in the future.

Isn't this kind of moving backwards? Didn't the 360 do the whole update automatically? Seems weird. That seemed to always be a big point in Xbox's favor.

If you guys don't like Kinect and can wait until next fall I expect there to be non-Kinect Xbone for $399.

Had my best night with the XB1 last night.

Though it's hard to explain, there is something really gratifying about being able to slip in and out of the a game on TV and the video game you're playing. This feature is HUGE for me. I don't have to switch between remotes, wait for macros to deliver and switch inputs ...it's all there and it runs so smoothly. Going between DEN/SD and Ryse Son of Rome, sometimes PIPing both. Great experience.

Also, I fixed the problems I had with black levels through the HDMI Passthrough. There was an option on my Samsung plasma that says 'HDMI Black Output' I changed it from Normal to Low and just like that, the black levels were back to normal and the cloudy picture went away.

360 doesn't update automatically....I find it a big PITA
Huh. Not sure why I thought that. Maybe it was just less system updates overall than PS3 or something.I have to say, one of the best things about PS Plus is my PS3 updates itself and all games automatically and is always just ready for me to go. It's amazing. Seems like all the systems should go to this.

Spent 15 minutes waiting on a 360 upgrade last night just so I could watch Netflix. <_<

I have never had a 360 update take more than 3-5 minutes. (except for the once a year major dashboard changes) Usually it's more like 1-2. You sure it's not your internet connection?

If you guys don't like Kinect and can wait until next fall I expect there to be non-Kinect Xbone for $399.
they won't make a version without it. The whole point of including it with every Xbone is to have every customer the avalability and access to play/use kinect features. This is so developers utilize the features of it without having to worry about cutting their possible sales by XX% before it even launches.

That's what they have to say to get people to buy one. Now that Kinect is no longer required I'd be very surprised if they don't release a version without it and match the price of the PS4. If next Christmas Sony drops the PS4 price to $349 it's going to crush the Xbone in sales, even if MS drops the Xbone w/Kinect to $449.

If the Xbox had tanked at launch, I think MS would have been under a lot of pressure to release a Kinect-less version to get the price down. But given that the console has sold really well, I doubt you'll be seeing a Kinect-free version ever.
