***official*** all things Microsoft Xbox One (1 Viewer)

As someone who almost never buys a new game, I may get out of gaming if the used market goes away. I average under $5 per game right now, which is incredible value when you consider the amount of hours you get out of a Fallout 3, Skyrim, Dark Souls kind of game.
But what if games are actually $5? Have you seen the prices of games on Steam? Major PC titles like Civ 5 are only full price for a few weeks then they fall to <10. Also, when was the last time anyone sold a used copy of Angry Birds?
I buy used and resell it it when I am done. The difference between buying and selling is always under $10 and usually closer to $5 as I am careful on the prices I buy at. For example I bought Skyrim 2 months ago for $35 (no tax, free shipping). I am going to be able to resell it this month a little over $30.

I know DVDs will get phased out, but I expect I'll still be watching them from time to time next year unless something drastically changes in the movie streaming realm. Not having a DVD drive in my console Seems like it would be a pain.
I don't see too big a big deal. Tv's have a ton of inputs, simply hook up your current DVD/blu ray player to one input and a possible future non disc drive gaming console to another. You can still buy VCR players. DVD players will be around for a long long long time to come.
right, but right now I use my xbox360 AS my dvd player. Not a ton - but it does get used.

Oh sure I agree. I use my ps3 the same way. I am just saying you won't lose access to that functionality if a game console comes out discless in the future. It is nice though because it saves some space not having to have two components.

Yup, there's a convenience factor in only having to have one machine for gaming and DVDs.

Xbox World: New Microsoft Console to Support Blu-Ray, New Kinect

Xbox 10th Anniversary Bundle

As a bit of a last hurrah for Xbox World, the UK gaming magazine that's set to ride off into the sunset after its December 12 issue, its editors have pulled together all of their secrets and sources to spoil plenty of information about Microsoft's new rumored Xbox gaming console well in advance of its (likely) first appearance in early-to-mid 2013.

Spoiler: It might even just be called, "Xbox," as opposed to the "Xbox 720" or any of the other flashy names thrown around rumor reports as of late.

"Xbox World has been at the cutting edge of Durango coverage for over 12 months. Unless something really dramatic changes, everything we reveal in our penultimate issue will be revealed long before E3 in June," said editor-in-chief Dan Dawkins in an interview with CVG.

Some of these details include the long-awaited suggestion that the new Xbox will finally be able to support Blu-ray playback, a rumor that's been making the waves for the better part of a year now. The new Xbox will also allegedly support a brand-new version of Microsoft's Kinect motion-tracking device that, according to earlier rumors, might even include a dedicated CPU for enhanced detection capabilities.

Xbox World's other tidbits about Microsoft's next-generation gaming console include the suggestions that it'll feature both TV output and input – if only it had set-top functionality, too – as well as directional audio, an "innovative controller," and support for augmented reality glasses at some point in the future. That sound you just heard was a team of Google engineers collectively patting themselves on the back.

As for the raw specs of the new Xbox, the "Durango" developer kit that's currently out and about sports a 16-core processor (four hardware cores times four logical cores apiece) and eight gigabytes of RAM, according to Xbox World's expose.

And for those wondering about the credibility of the magazine's suggestions – which does, at first glance, appear as if the publication's trying to drum up any and all interest it can for its swan song – there is the fact that Xbox World was the first to the scene in January of this year with details that Microsoft's new console would feature "augmented reality, directional sound, and a four-player, finger-tracking Kinect." These tidbits were later confirmed by an alleged Microsoft planning document that leaked out in June.

As for when Microsoft's console might first see the light of day, current signs point to the 2013 E3 convention; CES was previously thrown out as a possibility until Microsoft announced that the 2012 CES was going to be its last big appearance.

So a lot of the 360 games are going for $5 used? I almost never play games anymore but occasionally fire up my original xbox and will buy a couple of games. Looking forward to picking up a 360 when the 720 comes out. Good to know the used games are cheap.

There have been no official statements about a new console from Microsoft. I would say 2014 and the first real news about the console coming at e3 next year.

I would be very surprised at this point if the 720 doesn't come out in 2013. The PS4 has been rumored for 2014 and no way does MS want to release it the same year.

No you misunderstood me. I said the difference between buying and selling can be small. As I mentioned in the previous post I purchased Skyrim for $35 and sold it for $30. You are going to find very very few ps3 or Xbox 360 games for $5.

I've heard from some sources that Sony may not ever do another Playstation console. I don't think there's truth to it, but if that's the case, Microsoft has more to worry about from what Valve is doing than Sony. Remember that Valve is also working on their own console that would use Steam as its service. And we also can't forget about the Ouya, which will be running on an Android OS and is planned to be home of free games after cost of the console (which is rumored to be approx. $99). Still too early to speculate, but I don't think the Ouya really makes it, but for that price it would still be nice to own for other uses.

I got an Xbox 360 a couple weeks back for the "kids" for Christmas. Anyway, are there ever any deals for the Xbox Live?
I think you'll find the Xbox live Gold membership for a few bucks off once in a while on Amazon. That's where I picked it up early this year. However, if you want to have multiple people in your house use Live under their own IDs, you should check out the Gold Family membership. But you can only buy that straight through Microsoft IIRC.

Looks like Sony will be announcing the PS4 next month.

I'm interested to know the specs and features of both new consoles. It should be a good year, even if I may not get one during launch this time.

Not sure the validity off this rumor, but it makes the "always on" rumor more bearable.

Update: We are going to update our previous information. We would like to clarify the Xbox Mini function for avoiding any misunderstood about the new machine (below).

Microsoft is working hard in its new strategy for the next years. The company wants to expand its Xbox brand with two new Xbox. One would be next-gen, the other one would be a new redesign for Xbox 360. Take in mind the Wii Mini, MS would like to offer something similar to Nintendo. This cheap model would be focused as a set top box product, although you will be able to load games too, but the games should be load directly from the HDD. This Xbox wouldn’t have disc drive.

We have received new information about the latest Xbox Roadmap. Our source unveils new details for Durango, Xbox mini and the Microsoft strategy; moreover we don’t forget Kinect 2.0.

Xbox Mini

The “Xbox Mini” is not a 360 add-on, it is a stand alone product that contains Xbox 360 functions for gaming, and alone it is meant to compete with Apple TV. Since it is likely it will not have a disc drive, it is being designed with “always online” in mind, and with internet being required for Live functions. Xbox 360 Games can be played on it by purchasing Games on Demand on Xbox Live (for new purchases) or if already purchased, simply download it. This also applies to music and movies. To further clarify, the Durango will also have these (TV) functions, just with next-genration gaming hardware instead of Xbox 360 at a higher price.

When used with Durango, it offers connectivity with it for backwards compatibility with both disc based and On Demand games, and it’s no more different than what Sony will be doing with Gaikai for playing PS3 games on PS4, only with Xbox it will be done locally and not through the cloud. You can control the Xbox Mini under a single interface and not have to worry about switching between devices in a single display input.

These connectivity functions cannot work with existing Xbox 360 units due to the difference in external interface. The Xbox Mini was designed for this along side Durango.

Microsoft expands its Xbox brand

Getting to the point there are going to be two console as part of the redesigned “Xbox Line” of products. A repackaged and reoriented Xbox 360 unit and the new “Durango” gaming console, both designed to compete with more than Sony in gaming, but against Apple as well.

When the Durango (game machine) launches, it will not support backwards compatibility for 360 games out of the box. Instead, this functionality will come from the other unit that will be networked with the Durango to provide this (not unlike the DVD add-on for the original Xbox).

The purpose of the smaller Xbox unit is to compete with Apple TV, but also provides XBLA and 360 game support which will give it an edge over Apple TV. The rumors of “always online required” comes from the smaller Xbox unit which may not have a disc drive and like Apple TV it would require a network connection and internet to provide any real functionality. It may be possible they will design both consoles to be stackable.

Durango itself will also always be online like any other device (correct with rumors), but it will not be a requirement to play local content and it will not prevent playing used games. Putting in an Xbox 360 disc into Durango will prompt the user to attach the supporting device that is sold separately. By separating the two devices and their functions it will ensure price competitiveness for both pieces of hardware. Microsoft’s delay in announcing these products from April goes more inline with not having a physical set of devices to show (among specification updates), which should be ready by May or June when this information is officially released.

The price goal of the smaller Xbox is $149 or lower and it is likely to not have a disc drive and would require a network connection. Durango will be priced competitively according to PS4′s price.

Kinect 2.0

A different department within Xbox handles Kinect hardware and software. The focus was more on developing and networking both consoles with Kinect more of an after thought at that point, considering dealing with it would be less of an issue even with hardware changes to the main console hardware. Kinect isn’t the primary focus.

The development kits required several pieces of hardware as to combine all “potential” hardware which may or may not be required to work with each other, which also includes the potential for any or all devices to required a network connection, which is where most of the “required” rumors are coming from.

I don't understand the backward compatibility thing. You buy a $500 machine that is uber powerful, and it requires another less powerful machine to be attached to it to be able to play the disc? How does that make any sense?

(not unlike the DVD add-on for the original XBox)
There was no add-on. It was just a remote control. The XBox had DVD functionality out of the gate, but they decided to lock it and require the remote so that they could boost accessory sales. And it failed. That add-on had a poor attachment rate and the XBox DVD drive was terrible at playing movies when it was used.

I still haven't seen anything to justify the "always-on" requirement.

I have I imagine that both machines will come bundled together for a price that's competitive with the PS4 (assuming the PS4 is an all in one set)

I can't wait to see the launch title list.

Eta...actually the list I see looks like recycled crap.

Is it even wise to buy physical discs anymore?
If you have kids, yes. I buy the disk and then DL it to the hard drive, so they can't break anything taking games out, etc.
But aren't we to the point where you just DL the game itself from the seller? I say this after buying two games at Best Buy the other day. :bag:
We're probably at least one more generation away from doing away with physical media entirely. I'm all in on digital media but there is a large majority that doesn't understand it, doesn't trust it, or simply not online to take advantage of it.

OOr doesn't like that you have to pay the same price for something you can't resell.

I have an 11yr old that takes the disks over to friends and play. That is the main reason I still buy them. I guess it's just a matter of preference.

That's why I need to go digital. Our discs get beat up pretty quick.

I love digital media except for the fact that I have been ####ed over by the Microsoft and their policies. I couldn't use the downloads due to an account change and then having their hardware crap out. I'll take the physical copy that they cant make you buy it again if you want to play the game. Also the always online component that I could see being implemented with all digital downloads.

This. I like digital a lot assuming the HD space is reasonable, but it's disgraceful that so many games on PSN are still at $60 when their real retail prices are down in the twenties. I'm assuming XBL is the same way. Microsoft and Sony need to get price competitive, and that includes the net price involved with being able to re-sell.

For the most part they are all about $10 overpriced but there are sales all the time. I rarely buy anything not on sale and when I do, it's usually 50% off.

Very much so. XBox Games on Demand is a joke. The only reason to buy a game on there is if you can't seem to find a copy of whatever game it is in your hometown. XBLA is a little better, but when comparing the same game that may be selling on Steam, Steam will nearly always have the better price. However, a lot of those games are timed exclusives or take longer to be ported to Steam, such as Braid, Fez, Castle Crashers, etc. One "feature" of the paid XBox Live Gold service is having weekly deals, but I can't remember the last time one was worthy enough to jump on. For example, last week the deal was a special on everything Serious Sam related and this week is a deal on Battlefield 3 Premium and the individual map packs. I'll say bad things about Origin, but at least Origin's Battlefield deals are better than what's here.

So, tomorrow at 1pm?

Hope it's better than the PS4 reveal as far as information goes. I also hope xbox.com is not too overloaded for me to even watch it.

I don't care too much for the resale value. That would be nice but it's not something I push (to my loss financially). I'm more interested in avoiding the physical discs breaking down. Sometimes it doesn't take long. Best Buy used to insure discs but not anymore.

From CliffyB on Twitter: "no matter what you see in the next while, remember they're holding back because E3 is around the corner. #XboxReveal"

Man... this looks pretty sweet. If it really is an all in one box and works as easy as he is showing, it will be awesome.
