***Official*** Amazon Rings of Power Thread (1 Viewer)

I love the show so far, but many of the comments in this thread are just weird. I got nothing out of this thread today. I guess this place is dying.

For those of you that think the fandom is racist and toxic, I implore you to watch this video and look at it from the real position:

The Critical Drinker lays out the real problem and not the problem you're being told it is, IMO.
Why watch? For those of us enjoying the show, how does it help? There is a lot of toxicity in the reviews and responses to the show, not everyone but many. If you don’t want to watch the show because you don’t think it stays true enough, super. I don’t really care as long as I’m enjoying it.
I mean, I don’t even know what that video has to do with the complaints people have lodged about this show? What childhood heroes are they making us hate? Bilbo? Frodo? Gimli? Legolas? Literally none of them are in this show. Galadriel? The chief complaint I see about her is that they made her too powerful (or powerful in the wrong way). Elrond?

The fact is that lots of people online ARE complaining solely about casting non-white characters. Such as this TWEET which insists that the problem is not non-white casting and then identifies nothing BUT non-white casting as the problem with the show.

I'm glad you watched the video, but if that is what you got out of it then I think maybe you need to watch it again. Just to confirm, you did watch the video?

This show is the product of Lord of the Rings devotees given free rein to run with the broad outline in lore given by the appendices. It’s essentially the LotR equivalent of historical fiction, and, imo, should be judged in a similar light.

I get some great naps in watching this show
Yeah it is getting to be a drag. The unintentional humor is giving way to boredom. The major problem is the bad writing. We now know why they discarded the Tolkien timeline and lore, they can't keep their own timeline and lore straight. I'm not sure how much longer my wife and daughter are going to hang with me watching this show.

I'll watch anything Tolkien related, it's all good as far as I'm concerned. You want to know what the most annoying thing about this series is to me? How Galadriel pronounces Sauron or Numenor or 3-4 other names. Some kind of weird R roll but not, can't describe it but it annoys the F out of me.

I’m really enjoying the show but damn there is a concerted effort to undermine it. If you don’t enjoy it, stop watching it.

I remember the complaints (I was one) in GOTs season 8, but they were based on a great show going off the rails. This feels like crazed fans just actively trying to derail a show before it starts and the rhetoric feels like everyone is reading the same complaint blogs or watching the same YouTubes. Reminds me of the COVID conspiracies where the same ideas and statements would be used over and over. Unfortunately, seems like me reading some of these now gets them plastered everywhere I look including here.

Oh well, staying out of here because most of the posts are not about the show at all.

Harfoots are an actual type of hobbit, predecessor/ancestor to our more famous Shire hobbits? They’re mentioned in the prologue to Fellowship Of The Ring. How can they use the name Harfoot but not Hobbit?
There are three branches of hobbits, Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides. All the details of the Amazon deal aren't public knowledge so there must be some loophole in the Appendices that mentions the Harfoots or they wanted rights to Hobbits and the Tolkien Estate was only willing to give them Harfoots.
A billion dollars and Bezos couldn't get the rights to call them hobbits? WEAKSAUCE

Because they're NOT hobbits.

Let me modify my statement - FOR A BILLION DOLLARS HE SHOULD GET HOBBIT RIGHTS AND CHARLIZE THERON TO MASSAGE HIS TOES

Dude, you have some nerve. Not one of your posts in this thread have been anything substantive about the show, and you are now going to stay out of the thread because most of the posts aren't about the show. I think Psychopav and myself are the only ones that have actually posted something from the actual show that we liked or didn't like and discussed scenes. Most people in here claim they like the show but only one actually talks about it and scenes in it that they liked. It is almost like some people may not be watching it but feel the need to defend it because they think it is being attacked by racists and misogynists. I notice the House of the Dragon thread is lively about actually talking about the show. Maybe someone is actually watching that show. My own little theory.

And I will watch because every episode till it gets old laughing at it because I enjoy doing that.

I fell asleep in the middle of the last episode. Show is very boring and confused at this point and the acting is terrible. I am going to stick with it as i hope it improves but not good so far. The only thing going for it right now is the production value is shockingly high. I can’t imagine much Amazon spent on it.

I think there was an initial flurry of online drama over the show that was largely social media driven and in reality was a very small number of keyboard warriors who were pretending to be bent out of shape for one reason or another, either in favor or against the show. I would say most people understand the show is not going to be a perfect slave to the lore, as with any adaptation, nor will it perfectly satisfy any one person's vision for what it should be. The great majority of people watching are doing so for simple entertainment/escape and will judge it on that basis. For me, its a decent show and I will probably watch the entire season.

😂 I knew I shouldn’t bother looking at your reply. Nerve? Damn, what a condescending *** you are. You actually think you’ve adding anything to this thread? I’m glad you enjoy watching a show to laugh at it. I don’t post in here because of you mainly because people who constantly ***** and whine and still have time to watch a show to laugh at it and write page long reviews are typically not very social or fun to hang out with. Personally, if I don’t like a show, I certainly am not wasting my time watching and writing down notes to post in here. I’ve participated in many TV show threads in here over the years on shows I enjoyed. I’ve never seen a thread so completely ruined by people like you. Sad. Enjoy the thread, you gave me a good laugh.

Ok, so are you telling me to chill out, buzz off, or what? I agree with what you are saying but I thought this was a thread to discuss the show, good and bad. Which I have done with very few other people actually doing the same. Lots of other people have brought up all the crap online and lumped me in with that where if you read my first posts I never brought up any of those criticism except the fact that they are not following the lore in respect to the timeline or any detail.

Good episode this week, feels like the show is starting to find it's footing.

First Sauron sighting. What's with the dark elf? Who is he do you suppose?

Also happy to see the stranger expressing concern about bad consequences. Maybe he's a Maia after all.

my stance has changed on the show. I am a total LOTR nerd. I read all of them, even The Silmarillion which is a tough read. Hated ring of power on first watch, So much that I stopped mid episode 2. I decided to re-watch and it's OK now. Not great, but adequate to tell the backstory (even if not in completely in line) and watch all the episodes. Episode 2 seemed totally lost to me. but the others have beeb solid.

Yes, I have added a lot to this thread. All you have managed to do is be a Karen yelling at someone in an empty parking lot for parking in the wrong spot. If you were interested in the show you could easily put me on ignore and chat to your hearts delight, but no, more important to yell down at people that disagree with you and tell them how to behave. Fantastic job.

I have also been wondering who Halbrand is supposed to be in LOTR lore? Seems like a fairly torn individual.
Halbrand is a character that is made up by the show. There is no Halbrand in the lore.
You mean fake Aragorn
I was reading some internet speculation, and many people think he may become one of the ring wraiths (the Witch King).
I like the speculation that he becomes the king of the army of the dead, which I have also read.

Point of order: if there is a car in the wrong spot, is the parking lot really empty?

Best line for me of the last episode was when Adar was standing in the sun talking to an orc and said something about, "missing the feeling of the sun, light that comes from the gods themselves, when it’s gone". Have to go back to grab the exact quote but I thought it was very poignant at the time.

It seems likely that his fate is not going to be good. He seems like a good bet to be Sauron himself with his forging skills and interest. That seems to obvious with all the clues they have been giving but I think my bet would be that he is Sauron.

I hate the multi-quote thing on this site, need to re-read how to do single quotes.

I was going to offer an opinion but realized if you haven't read the books it would be giving away spoilers so just going to shut up.

Really enjoying the show. It makes the world feel gigantic and lived in. Slow pace, sure, but just massive and cool.

Really enjoying speculating on Adar and on Halbrand eventual identities. Also enjoying Isildur storyline, which is funny to me.

I'm still in shock over last week's Mithril Tree. They're gonna have to work really hard to get me to buy into that whole thing. Most of the changes they've made to the (scant) written background, I can deal with. THAT, though, has got me twisted all around.

This week's episode was pretty good. It's certainly the most action-packed so far. I love the character Adar, even if I can't quite figure out what the hell they're doing with him. No Elrond, Durin, Disa, Gil-Galad, or Harfoots (feet?) this week.

My Top Ten Favorite Characters So Far (in no particular order):

Durin
Elrond
Disa
Nori
Poppy
Bronwyn (swoon)
Adar
Miriel (more swoon)
Nori's parents (I'm a cheater)
Galadriel

Highest score yet on IMDb this week. Trolls must have sore thumbs, couldn't get around to smashing that 1 star this week lol.

Personally put this just a bit lower than they others. I liked the ending but really was hoping to see Bronwyn or Arondir eat it in the battle, would have made for a better story going forward imo.

I'm only through episode 5 so far, but definitely finding Elrond and Duran are the first characters I'm finding really very likable and as a result am enjoying that storyline the most. Bit of a surprise to me, because I found them both too cartoon-like initially, but they've grown on me.

Those two have been great. I’m liking the rest as well. Galadriel was starting to get more human if you will and I thought the ending was great. I don’t know any of the story outside of LOTR/Hobbit future movies, but I was not expecting the result.

Could make for some good, more dark episodes.

Loving the show, I get the complaints as it was really slow and doing nothing but world building for basically the first 4 episodes but now things are moving. Unfortunately I believe there are only two more episodes left this season and it feels like it’s just getting finally getting it’s feet under it.

We’ve come full circle on tv these days, 24-26 episodes a season back in the day on network tv was way too much, but these 6-8 episode seasons are just way too short on the other end IMO.

Agree with you on both points. I don’t recall 26 episodes but 20-24 was very common. That’s 800-960 minutes of actual non-commercial show minutes. 8-10 episodes of 60 minutes of content with no commercials is what new shows are. It’s not insignificant but still only 480-600 minutes per season. I know some episodes are extended but still with intros and recaps and credits, probably still 60 minutes and change. Still as you said a drop in show minutes.

BSG is probably the closest show I can think of in terms of similar (Sci-Fi or fantasy) content with special effects (not like X-Files) and that was basically 20 episodes a season for the 40 minutes a show.

Yeah was thinking way back to old school TNG and that era that often ran 26 a season. That slowly got whittled down in the 90’s and 00’s to around 22ish for a lot of genre shows. But a lot shows would often still be stretched budget and storyline-wise even with that many episodes. For example BSG famously had some filler eps, some which were good and some which were not so good. Now the numbers of episodes have really came down in the streaming era. Seems like there’s rarely time to build characters or world build / experimental episodes.

Some of that is I am sure a function of society turning into no patience and go, go, go, on demand, cellphones, social media, YouTube, etc.

I bailed on a couple of series because of that. Arrow & Vikings both just wore me slap out with the 20+ shows per season. I look at a series like Peaky Blinders which I just binged, 6 shows a season as almost perfect for me. 8-10 is very doable but much anything past that and it turns into a job for me and I bail. And no matter how good it is, you just can't produce 20 shows and have decent content in all of them.

I never watched Lord of the Rings but gave this show a shot. Not horrid, but not great. Not sure why the bad guys can't operate in light or what appears to be an elf is leading them. I will keep watching for now.

Finally caught up, definitely glad I'm watching. It's not superb, but definitely very good. Definitely more gory than the LOTR movies.
