Official Buckethead Appreciation Thread (1 Viewer)

Pretty sure I OD'd on most GnR songs before I graduated college. I can't turn the station off fast enough when Welcome to the Jungle comes on.
Me too, and I usually split on Paradise City too, but for some reason, I can always listen to Sweet Child O'Mine, even today. Don't know why. If they played "Rocket Queen", "Think About You", and "Night Train", I'd be happy with just that.

Bring 'em all back: teven Adler, Traci Guns, Tommy Stinson, Bumblefoot, Buckethead, guys who Axl doesn't remember ever playing with the band. Put them all on stage at the same time with Myles Kennedy and the members of Velvet Revolver and the JuJu Hounds. I'd pay to see that.

I saw Myles Kennedy & Slash on a tv concert. Songs were not as memorable, but the band was very tight compared to you know who.

Pretty much agree. Not much on Appetite does it for me anymore (for anything other than nostalgia) but Sweet Child never gets old.

The Use Your Illusion stuff is still good, because I didn't play it out enough. I started to get into grunge so after the intial infatuation, they sat on the shelf for a while. Unlike Appetite that was rarely removed from my car tape deck for 2 years or so.

I remember buying their cassette as a kid and getting a boner because the cartoon chick inside the cassette paperwork showed her boobies.

Remember that?
I still have the original vinyl with that cover, there was a lot of controversy since it depicted a rape scene thy replaced the cover with the iconic cross and kept the rape scene on the inside coverSeems somebody beat me to it

Wonder if Steven Adler is still alive

Alive. 21 months sober. Wants in but they don't want him supposedly.

I suspect most people who will enjoy this will be so tanked at the shows that they will think it is still 1988. GnR gonna make a butt load of money off nostalgic drunks.

I'm glad I got to seem them back in 1989, so I don't have to see them now and pretend they're almost as good as when they were in their heyday. That's what I have to do with Van Halen and it sucks.

What a stunningly beautiful train wreck that would be.

You couldn't charge me too much. I'd pay whatever it takes. As a kid who grew up listening to them as my favorite band but who never had a chance to see them live, and for a chance to get trashed with my buddies and relive my youth? I'm all over it.

I saw them a few years about in NY (without Slash) and it was an awesome show. With Slash? Oh hell yes please.

It's probably not the cool response, but what can I say. I'm in.
Not a chance. You're good people but way off here.

Come on. Aren't you better than this?

Maybe David Lee Roth and Axl can tour together to see who is worse?

No. No I most definitely am not.

That first (only?) JuJu Hounds album is fantastic.

I wouldn't willing go out of my way to listen to any GnR song. I just looked and I don't have a single one digitally downloaded. However, to this day, that JuJu Hounds album still gets heavy rotation. I probably listen to it once a month.

:goodposting: I walked out of The Police reunion thinking 'I wish I saw them then instead of having to endure that'

I remember when I started my current job, March of '99. Within a couple of weeks, the music conversations with co-workers had started up. Those conversations led to 'you should come see REM with us this summer'

My memory of REM live will always be 3rd row, smaller venue, Work Tour.

That memory wasn't going to be ruined by seeing them sing crap like 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Everybody Hurts' while sitting on the lawn at some big, sterile, 40,000 person capacity outdoor venue.

Saw them in '92, and they couldn't be any worse today. No good memory to ruin I guess.

I sat next to Duff McKagan on a flight from Burbank to Seattle. Didn't know who he was until I got off the plane, thought he was just some older LA rocker dude.

Super nice guy.

Think he does financial planning now or something? I've heard some interviews with him and he does seem like a really nice dude.

Why do you want your fond memories tarnished with what will likely be a crappy show? Some moments should be left in the past and not relived.
Have you seen them recently? I saw them in a NYC club a few years ago, sans Axl, and it's my favorite show I've ever been to. In sure it would have been the cool thing to say, that they're old and fat and Axl can't sing. But they sounded amazing, the energy was amazing, and they blew the roof off the place. And that was without Slash, who was always my favorite member (grew up playing rock guitar in the 80s and 90s, he was my idol).

Bottom line, I get that it's cool to say they will suck, but having seen the most recent tour, I was blown away, and the energy and anticipation alone will make this an event for the ages.
from what you've written... you saw them play a few years ago without Axl AND without Slash. you're actually talking about a John Mayer show, right?

Jesus, it was a typo. Not that hard to figure out from context. He wrote Axl when he meant Slash the first time.

By golly, you're right. He grew frustrated over GnR finances and not knowing how much they were actually making, realized he was a 30 something millionaire with no idea how to manage his own money, went to community college, then Seattle U and now owns a wealth management company.

Also, this:

On May 10, 1994, at the age of 30, McKagan became gravely ill due to acute alcohol-induced pancreatitis, which caused his pancreas to swell to the size of a football and leak digestive enzymes into his body, causing third-degree burns. He was taken to Northwest Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, where he was monitored until the swelling went down. He was told by his doctors that he would be dead within a month if he did not stop drinking. He had made previous efforts to curb his drinking, but this health crisis was his incentive to become sober for good. In his autobiography, he attributed his sobriety to exercise through first mountain biking, and later martial arts.

If the context wasn't enough for you to solve the mystery, I explained this typo in a post.

you had a lot of posts- didn't read them.

went for the low hanging obvious typo fruit... but apparently GNR reunions are serious business, so I'll back away.

I liked Velvet Revolver, don't think Slash or Duff have lost much. Matt would have to continue on the skins, is Izzy coming back?

Axl has sounded just fine singing the last many years despite his fuller figure. I thought when he finally did an interview for Jimmy Kimmel that he might be ready to stop fighting against his former band mates.

My point is Axl, Slash, Duff, and Matt are likely all good to go, most folks will buy in hook line and sinker just like Star Wars. They know the white middle age dudes feel like the country left them behind in a cloud of rock n roll corporate dust so why not cash in?

If they just go on tour and don't release a new record, you know it's all about the almighty dollars. Perla left Slash or vice versa, maybe she took all his money too.

Saw GnR opening for Aerosmith in '88, by the end of that tour more folks were coming to see GnR than Aerosmith. Saw them again a couple times before they did the Metallica tour. Not sure they could recreate much of that.

Why Coachella? I know its a big show, I went to it in 2006 and 2007 when it was first getting going, seems like they would want to fill up stadiums by themselves. Maybe Coachella for an official announcement they are back but that festival, the folks who would be coming out, seems like a not so good mix to me. I want to hear techno and dance music at those festivals, maybe a Duran Duran type band from the 80s but not GnR.

8/4/1988 Philly Spectrum. Top 3 concert all time for me. (Possibly the best show I've ever seen, depending on the day you ask me) GNR was amazing, then Aerosmith lit it up on the Permanent Vacation your, before their set list started to include 7 ballads. (Although "Angel" was the start of this trend for them, it seemed to get progressively worse on the next 2 albums)

Also saw the Guns/Skid row tour a few years later, but the short opening set on the Aersosmith tour was the best performance I've seen by them.

October 1989. Los Angeles Coliseum. Fourteenth row center (girlfriend's stepdad knew the concert promoter and hooked us up) for the Steel Wheels tour. Stones, Guns and Living Color. Epic, epic show. Girlfriend and I were starving college students at the time and were offered $2,000 for the tix. Almost sold them, but so glad that we didn't.

This was one of four shows at the Coliseum including the infamous Mr Brownstone band breakup one night and Slashs apology to the crowd the next, right? Would have loved to have been at this one.

If there is a reunion I will go at least once (Los Angeles).

Headliners at big festivals can get 7 figures. Double that for Coachella because it's two weekends, that could be $3mm? $4-5mm? A lot. It's a helluva lot.

Agreed. The best "Axl and friends " show that I attended was the one with Buckethead
Only time I've seen them was with Buckethead and thought it was a great show. Definitely missing the feel of a real GNR show though - Axl's dreads and football jersey and a guy with a KFC bucket on his head didn't help matters.

LOOK AT ME, I'M 106 ROWS AWAY FROM THE STAGE AND A 1/3 RACK POORER!!!!

Wait for the digital download, folks. It's what you'll be watching there on the jumbotron

I guess I'm going to Coachella, time to call the old friends back in Los Angeles and find a place to crash.

Also going to need a hotel room in the Coachella Valley for a couple nights.

I wonder if they will all just fight and kill each other on the first night.

Axl, Slash, Duff all signed on...Popcorn can't play no more, it has to be Matt running the drums. No word on Izzy yet, gut feeling he will do it, he did play with Axl I think previously so I cannot imagine he passes this up. Still, he is a free thinker and dumped these guys once so that will be interesting. I hope he does.
