I think this team makes a push in the second half. I really do.
I agree. There is way too much talent on this team for them to not have a legitimate shot at winning it all.......
You guys are talking about making a push for and winning the first pick in the 2008 amateur draft, right?

down goes Harang...
Just a little back stiffness. I think he had a similar problem earlier in the year.Calm down.
Drove down for the game last night - first time in years. Was looking forward to seeing Harang pitch, and instead was treated to 8 innings of the Reds' bullpen. I didn't realize that they actually douse themselves with gasoline as they leave the bullpen - explains a lot, actually. The ballpark is beautiful, though.

Shameless plug: I'm writing for the upstart website that broke the news of the Narron firing last month -- twinkilling.com.

My "2007 Cincinnati Reds Trade Deadline Report" is up on the front page of the site.

Kyle Lohse traded to Philly for AA lefty starter Matt Maloney.

Maloney is a 23-year-old, 6'4" lefty with mediocre stuff, a pretty good K rate, and gopher ball tendencies. Rated #5 among Phillies prospects before the season by John Sickels and #9 by Baseball America.

Fixed. :football:

It was going to be Santos, but now they are moving Livingston up since Santos had to pitch yesterday.

Supposedly Arroyo on Sunday and why not... they've run him into the ground every other chance they've gotten. :lmao:

So can we start talking about next year? Or am I going to jinx the Reds from winning the pennant this season?

I have a question. Is Ryan Freel done? Not completely done, but as an "every day lead off hitter" done?

He was nicked a few times this year but never got on track with the bat. Is there anyone else in the organization who can step up and be an everyday quality leadoff hitter next year? Someone that can be a spark plug, get on base anyway possible and move around the bases?

I know it isn't an every day occurrance, but I liked the results of the top of the batting order last night:

Josh Hamilton 3 - 5

Jeff Keppinger 2 - 4

Ken Griffey Jr. 2 - 5

Brandon Phillips 3 - 4

My guess is that Hatteberg and Dunn are both gone after this season. And may still be moved this year (?)

Joey Votto moves up to 1b.

Maybe Jay Bruce moves to LF if he is ready for the jump next spring.

Griffey is another big question mark. I hope they keep him but isn't there another playoff trade deadline coming up?

Not sure what they will do with EE. He seems destined to just be one of those tease players that never quite gets over the hump and makes you feel comfortable.

I really have no idea what I am talking about, but am kind of juiced about the talent the Reds have coming up.

You're still watching this team? ;)

All kinds of questions for next year.

1. Krivsky? Jocketty?

2. MacKanin? Girardi/LaRussa/big name guy?

3. Are they going to spend any money?

4. What do they get for Dunn? Established player? Prospect? Take the picks?

5. Is Homer healthy?

Those are the big five questions for me.

Winning this division is fool's gold. This team gets waxed against any playoff opponent. The 2006 Cardinals were better and won't happen again.

So...

The rest of 2007 needs to be about protecting your pitching assets and finding out what you have for 2008.

To me, that means:

1. Do not push Harang, Arroyo or Bailey. At all. For any reason.

2. Decide if Keppinger is an every day 3B, and specifically if you're happy with an good hit, good field, little power corner guy. If you still think Encarncion can turn it around, use this offseason as an ultimatum -- if he doesn't come back with his head on straight (in the dugout, in the field, at the plate) he's done.

3. Find out if Votto and Bruce are ready for the big leagues. No reason Votto shouldn't be playing 1B for the rest of the year. Bruce has had a silly good year, including AAA the past month, but there may be time to wait on him, especially if you think you're happy with Hopper/Freel as your leadoff hitter to start 2007.

4. Pray that at least one other player steps up as a bullpen option now so that you can focus your offseason goals there.

5. Watch Livingston and Dumatrait closely, but let them build confidence over the next two months.

I am not ready to say the Reds will win the World Championship this year, but on a positive note, Billy Bray actually looked very strong and in command last night.

That was the first time I actually saw him pitch this year....was that his second outing?

Do you guys think Guardado will sniff the closer's role this year?

Also, did you see this comment by Junior on being replaced the other night on defense in a double switch:

"It was the first (time in my career) and it will be the last"

:porked:

Lance's blog had the whole quote. He said something along the lines of "They'll have to chase me down like Tanner Boyle to get me off the field the next time.":goodposting:No idea about Guardado.9.5 games out of first, 6.5 games ahead of the worst record in MLB.

Bullpen was great last night. Bray, Burton, and Weathers have all been great and they will all be back next season. We could have a solid pen next year. Does anybody know what the plan is for Saarloos? I heard they want him to do long relief, but then who takes Dumatraits spot in the rotation?

Tell me Dunn doesn't look like Ted Kluszewski from behind in this picture.

I don't think I have ever seen Dunn look so wide in the shoulders before.

Dunn

Congratulations to the best shortstop in Major League Baseball for the decade of the 70's!

Dave Concepcion has his #13 retired!

Next stop: COOPERSTOWN!

My all time favorite Red!

My favorite as well. I got to see most of the ceremony on sports south. Nice seeing all the Big Red Machine guys again.

Is it part of the contract that Reds managers sign that they have to screw up the bullpen every single night? I bet they've gone completely against "the book" (ahem, logic) about 100 times on using the bullpen this year and its backfired every single time. You would think they'd get lucky with it every once and a while and .... Oh, I don't know, using Majewski to face the lefty instead of bray with the game on the line then bringing in Bray to face their best righty.... would work out sometimes. Horrible... just horrible

So Hamilton is only starting against righties, correct?
Its more important that we get Ellison at bats than let Hamilton learn to hit major league lefties. So, I know that on Tuesday's we're in rebuild mode, but aren't Wednesday's "win-at-all-cost" days? This team seriously needs to pick what direction they're going in and stick with it. A real manager might help in that regard, but I digress.

This leads to the next question. What is the general consensus on Coach Mackanin?Should he stay? I almost think he has earned at a minimum a one year deal. But, I don't know. If LaRussa makes himself available, I don't see Mackanin sticking.

Did anyone catch the game on SNY yesterday?

I think it was Keith Hernandez that repeatedly bashed Griffey saying he has had an exceptionally bad attitude over the past several weeks.

Is this just KH being bitter about being coke snorting borderline HOF player through his career? Or is there something brewing?

Griffey has definitely been loafing for a few weeks. :pickle:

Interesting tidbit on WLW last night:

In 2006 Aaron Harang led the NL in wins and tied for the lead in striketouts. He did not get even ONE VOTE for the Cy Young.

In the past 50 years, every other pitcher to lead his league in wins and strikeouts not only got votes, but won the award!

Couple of interesting rumors from Yahoo.com

The LaRussa deal has been talked about for quite some time:

LaRussa, Jocketty a package deal for Reds, Mariners?

Wednesday, Sep 19, 2007 6:01 pm EDT

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and GM Walt Jocketty have been mentioned as a package deal for both the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners.

LaRussa and Jocketty have a good relationship with the Reds' new CEO, Robert Castellini, a former Cardinals investor. But an opening in Seattle is said to be the one that would genuinely intrigue La Russa, who still lives in the Bay Area. Jocketty is under contract with St. Louis through 2008.
Reds' skipper wants Dunn around

Wednesday, Sep 12, 2007 6:01 pm EDT

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn is up to 38 home runs and 101 RBI on the year. That's one short of his career-high for RBI. The club has a $13.5 million option on Dunn for next season. Manager Pete Mackanin sounded like he'd like to see it picked up.

"Numbers are numbers," Mackanin said. "Results are what count at this level. You look at over 100 RBI, 40 home runs, 100 runs scored. It's hard to replace numbers like that.

"And he's a good teammate. He's a solid guy. Everybody likes him."
And oh by the way...this news flash: Griffey out for the year with the upper groin injury.

Some random thoughts...

I still think Jockety has a year left on his contract, so I don't know how much meat there is to these package deal rumors.

I like Mackanin.

I'm getting tired of some of Krivsky's BS answers to media questions.

What are they going to do in the outfield? Dunn, Griffey, Hamilton, Hopper, Bruce, Freel. Not room for all these guys.

It will be an interesting off-season.

I like Mackanin too. I like the fact that he doesn't seem to feel the need to play mommy to Dunn and Griffey and he certainly isn't afraid to pull them in a double switch or sit them late in the game. I have really liked Hatteberg and what he has done for the club for the last two seasons....but I don't know what his contract looks like and he has some young cheaper studs breathing hard down his back.I love this young lineup. Hop, Kep, Phillips followed by a couple of power hitters. I would love to see Hamilton come out next spring and manage to play 140+ games next year just to see what kind of number he can put up.Never thought I would say something positive about the bullpen but Jared Burton deserves some props. He has played very well in the set up roll. Bill Bray has looked "ok" since coming back late this season as well. There are still gapping holes to fill in middle releif and I am not sure Weathers is the answer as a closer.EE has looked good since his extended visit to Lousiville.Kep may end up being the new "Freel" for the infield. And Hopper may end up being the "Freel" for the outfield." The problem is keeping them both in the lineup as 1-2 hitters. (Unless this whole second half turns out to be a complete dream for them never to be repeated.I like Freel, but I have had a feeling that he simply caught lightening in a bottle with his bat a couple of years ago. He is still a "run through a wall" outfielder but I have serious doubts about him as a lead off man.Pitching is a disaster. Harang is the stud. Arroyo and Belisle have been way too inconsistant. The bullpen has some positives to build on but they need a lot of building on.GO REDS!!

They need to deal Hopper this winter. This dude's value will never be higher. I doubt they'd be able to get anything for Freel.I really hope they sign Dunn's extension. His stats would be a bargain at 13.5M.

This is a good rumor, and seems to signal that LaRussa would be next.

Red Offer Jocketty CEO, President Titles?

The Cincinnati Reds are pursuing former St. Louis Cardinals General Manager Walt Jocketty, offering him one of the titles currently held by President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini, two sources told the Dayton Daily News on Friday.

A source with the Reds said Jocketty would become CEO, with Castellini retaining the title of president. A source in St. Louis said Jocketty has been offered the president's chair.
