I work at Walgreens and only make $8.25 an hour. I turn 22 next month. My boss ensures me he is trying to 'develop me' and get me where I need to be.

About a week ago he hires a Candidate off the street for a Shift Lead position.

It's an African American women who will now be making more than me and have an easier job than me.

Should I quit? Look for a new job? Apparently I'm an $8.25 and hour Stooge.

I don't have time to 'work' for a position we're handing to people off the streets. I'm sure I can talk myself into a comparable position in another company.

I've been with Walgreens 3-months and am sick to my stomach every time I see this shift lead.
Quit and get a job at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, because they have an excellent corporate structure and they give you the tools to be your own boss.
Working at rental car companies at that age is a shark move. They pay pretty well.

Let me guess, poli sci degree?
What's wrong with Poli Sci? Certainly, no worse than any other BA and in fact if you do it write has more opportunity for learning things like statistics and critical thinking than many BA degrees.
Touche. I'm not known for proofreading when posting from work (which I'm able to do because I am not making $8 hour working retail).
Sorry GB... Softball/Low-hanging fruit and all. You're definitely a sharp guy. All in jest.

On a serious note - as someone who's negotiated hundreds of deals for consulting/contracted support, let me tell you.

It's a lot harder to find someone with a poli sci, comm, art, etc degree/experience to justify their eligibility. I recently had a guy with a degree in business that worked at Olive Garden as a manager since college and built is degree/resume into a entry level Business Analyst job.

If that same guy had a poli sci or other goofy arts degree, it's a lot harder to negotiate into a deal.

Just going off of my experience/industry GB.

I get it especially in today's world. Right out of college, I didn't walk into any sweet Booz-Allen jobs. The degree was prep for Law school before I changed my mind. That said, I took an entry level job and let my talent shine and built it into a fine career. My point was that you could say the same thing about any Bachelor of Arts and that I'd look more favorably on a Political Science Major than Communications, Anthropology, English Lit, etc.

one of my best friends has a political science degree. it really opened the door to owning a landscaping company

How big a pay raise is the Shift leader position? How much more work is it? Would you get benefits?

Walgreens isn't exactly a career company, they underpay and overwork their employees from what I hear. Might be time to move on.
I'm guessing around $10.00 an hour. It's much, much less work. It requires you to tell goons like me what to do all day.
what experience, other than your three months in your current role, do you have that makes you qualified to lead a team? This has to be :fishing: by the way.

I hold no degree. I learned a work ethic from an early age and have consistently outshined my peers, while being quiet, patient and respectful. I'll never live in a mansion but I'm just about at 6 figures now and my boss is actively working to develop me and get me bumped up to the next level of management. I've worked with scores of entitled and clueless idiots who thought their degree guaranteed a career path. Most were laid off when we sent hundreds of jobs to eastern Europe, keeping me around to ensure everything didn't go sideways during the transition. Amazing how far dependability goes, and just generally not being a headache that the boss has to babysit.

At Walgreens, our store staff members display an incredibly diverse array of talent, working together to create a consistently positive customer experience. We depend on our team members to be the face of Walgreens, and in return, you’ll find that each and every job offers the potential for growth and a clear path to advancement — both within the store environment and beyond. Working in a Walgreens store means every day is different, and how far you go is up to you.

As photo finishing has evolved, so have the responsibilities of our photo specialists. Not only will you learn to operate state-of-the-art photo processing equipment, you'll receive extensive training in our PictureCare Plus system, where you monitor all orders and even specialty items like photo calendars, films, and mugs. The photo department is a vital part of every Walgreens, and we depend on confident, tech-savvy individuals who are customer-serviced focused for our continued success.

To qualify for this position, we are looking for individuals who can:

- provide friendly customer service
- specialize in and promote the latest digital trends
- become an expert with photo lab equipment
- work with cutting edge technology
- You must be at least 18 years old to apply.

At Walgreens, you can make a living while making a difference. Join us today!

There are a lot of us with poli sci degrees. Most of us are called "lawyers."
To be fair, I majored in Political Science because I wanted to go to law school. Three semesters in to college I was done thinking about law school and was majoring in political science because I could make a 3.0 without opening a book. In hindsight, I wish I had worked a little harder and gone to law school.

Works out great if they actually finish law school. Numbers tell me "most" don't.
Most who attend law school do actually finish.

Would you prefer another moniker like "a good chunk of us are called lawyers"

I'd prefer "most poli sci undergrads don't actually finish, let alone go to law school"

No, it doesn't always work out great, really. Lots of law school grads earning no more than what they could have with a bachelor's degree. It works out great if you work your ### off and graduate towards the top of your class. For me, watching The Paper Chase was enough for me to decide "f-that.".

So you want more pay with less work? Am I reading this correctly? What a great generation you are part of. Thanks for helping to make this country great again.
:goodposting: Why can't these kids be more like my generation?

When I was 22, I don't think I knew anybody that didn't want more work for less pay.

And I know you guys are making fun of me. But I have been working since 16. I am way more competent than the average bear.

The idea that I couldn't micromanage a Drugstore is a joke.

What's your phone number over there? I'll talk to your boss and set him straight.

Power of the FFA!!!!

And my paychecks are $470 every two weeksw. Apartments cost $550 a month.

Gas and insurance is $120 a month.

Groceries cost $150 a month.

You do the math.

God forbid my car breakdown.

For that pay, you can just pick whatever retail job has the hottest chicks. Screw promotions. How much more will you really make? And you still have to wear the stupid blue smock. Seriously, just case your local drugstores, supermarkets etc and pick the one with the best looking talent.

Or, maybe wait tables? Solid tip money to be made if you can work your way up to the nicer restaurants in your town. But you've got to hustle, be presentable and not be a ####### whiner.

Here's the thing, whatever company you're working for I can guarantee they're always looking to bring in better talent. They don't really care about how good of a person you are or how much experience you have. If they can bring in someone better than you they will. You'll either be let go or kept at an entree level position.

Hiring managers are always scanning the job market and you should be doing the same. There's no reason not to send out a few resumes a month. Keep yourself on the job market. As long as you're not an idiot and talking about looking for something else at your current job, you've got nothing to lose. I try to get myself a few interviews a year because, why not?

do a search on the forums for the gen y thread.

A serious reply from someone who works at Walgreens....

Why the hell would you WANT the shift lead position? You may think that it's easier than the job you do but it's not. You might get the image of the Shift Leader sitting in the office and doing nothing but you're overlooking the responsibility that you are taking on and the amount of blame that will receive. You get paid maybe $1 or $2 more an hour but you are in charge of the store while you are there. You have to deal with all the customer complaints. You are responsible for getting a task list done that can't humanly be accomplished but will be blamed when it isn't done. And you have no real power at all.

On the question of why you weren't given the job, my understanding is that in order to be promoted to Shift Lead, you have to have a performance evaluation and have a high enough score. Since you've only been there 3 months, you probably haven't had a yearly performance evaluation and are not eligible to be promoted. Also you probably don't know the cl

Walgreens is not the best place to start a career in most cases. If you're a pharmacist then it's ok but there are better options. If you want to be a pharmacy technician, it's ok but your ability to advance is pretty capped. Where you're at after 3 years is about as high as you can go. If you are in management, you better have a degree and starting off higher than Shift Lead or you've got a long way to go before you get anywhere meaningful in your career.

Trust me, if you're going to school, you don't want the added stress that comes with being an SFL.

You're a poor college student, suck it up.
