***Official Disc Golf Thread*** (1 Viewer)

This was leaked and I guess wasn't a surprise to most.....but Simon goes to MVP! 10 year deal.

As a newbie, I am getting to know the players, and spending more time on Disc Golf Twitter and YouTube, but is there a basketball or football example that would be equivalent to this deal? Feels like these contracts are breaking new ground in the sport.
Any major golfer going to a new golf club or golf ball manufacturer. Maybe quite not quite like Tiger going to Nike....but it's in the same ball park.

Keeping in mind that we don’t know a lot about the money yet, this is the third really big disc golf contract. Paul McBeth got the first $1 million/year contract from Disccraft in 2019 (I think). Ricky Wysocki got a similar deal from Dynamic Discs last year (though some of that was in crypto, oops). Simon’s deal is likely in line with those.

Good write-up with more details on the parameters of the contract at Ultiworld. Confirms that it's a seven-figure a-year contract over the entire 10 years (and grants Simon a renegotiation after year 5 in case deals continue to skyrocket). No cap to what Simon can earn on signature discs.

My buddy gave me a sack of discs he found in an abandoned office at his place of employment....a rather large chip manufacturer. Going to try them out today, rain or shine. Need to shake the rust off too.
Update? Curious to know what are some of the discs.

I went down to Wilsonville to try them out - they set up two new holes that I just use for practice, so I just flung all the new ones (can't recall who makes them, but I'll get back to you) and then tossed my tried, true and trusty Leopards and I don't know man, I'm just a creature of habit. Those two Leopards are like my security blankets. After emptying the bag on the practice tee, I went out and birdied 1 and 2 and went a bogie free 5 under for 18. It's an easy course, but for my first round in a month + it felt good.

The best discovery for me is the putter that I got - it's a softer, heavier plastic and was just parking itself close to the basket if I wasn't nailing the putts. I've been meaning to try a different putter out and I think I found one. Ground was still pretty wet, so this thing was sticking where it landed vs the nasty roll aways with my usual plastic on some of the elevated holes.

Played yesterday and saw someone hit an absolutely insane forehand drive. Probably 50-60 feet in the air with a massive left-right bend through an honest to god forest of trees before it turned over at the end for an easy birdie. I'm not serious about this or anything, but I had no idea Sunday-afternoon dudes at my local could do stuff like that. Amazing shot (250? feet).

I hate it when people are better at stuff than me.

Honestly it was so far out of the realm of "frisbee golf" that I understand that I was just happy to have seen it. Like you're standing on #7 tee at a muni- and you let Tiger play through and watch as he drives the 370 yard par 4 for eagle or something. It was just so impressive.

And he lined the shot up for like 30 seconds too -- he didn't just fluke his way through the jungle. He picked a line and nailed it.

Gymnasts and pro disc golfers make me feel like I am a different and inferior species.

Every Tuesday in the winter we have a putting league at a brewery that is an absolute blast.

What’s a putting league? Here is how it’s done here
Random draw for partners - 2 people teams
A lane consists of two Baskets 30 feet
apart
A match is 11 points and you have to win by 2
Each player has 2 discs and you get a point for making one and 3 points for sinking both.
You play 5 matches and the top 8 teams advance to the playoffs

We average about 80 people a week just shooting the breeze, drinking and putting.
It’s common to see Jeremy Koling, Kyle Klein, Uli and other top pros each week but is welcoming for all skill levels and ladies.
If you’re lucky enough to one of these in your area and were on the fence about going I heartily encourage you to go.

Very cool. Charlotte area?

We have a few around Portland but I'm not sure how well they are attended. There is one at a micro brewery close to my house on Tuesday's but I have yet to go. :(

I’m in Charlotte and a couple of my friends have been running this for about 10 years. The longevity certainly has a positive impact on attendance.

I would encourage you to check it out. Worst thing you lose is a couple hours.

I was thinking about you guys when I went out to play yesterday. I ended hitting a tree off the tee on the hardest hole at my local course (Pier Park.) I had a pretty crazy forehand line that I measured after the throw (255 feet slightly uphill). I pulled out my phone in case I somehow managed to pull off a shot. Here’s what happened.

My disc ended up five feet from the basket.

It’s great to throw in the trees and hear nothing

foot fault!

Well I finally broke down and got a cart. Mostly for tournament play. The bag was just getting too heavy for snacks, towels, drinks, etc all the stuff needed to be prepared.

Went with the Dynamic Discs LG cart by Zuca. Will be taking it out for a test drive this week and then have a big tourney this weekend where the setup is on a ball golf course.

The standing and waiting at tournament rounds gets harder every year. Being able to have a place to sit and store a sweatshirt etc would be great.
Interested to hear how you like it.

If the early starters are any indication we’re gonna see some low numbers for the final round in Vegas today. Barela made this course look easy in round 2, if he can make his C1 putts (always the rub with him) I like his chances

Sucks to see Kevin Jones fall apart at the end, but I was happy to see Heimburg get the win. Eagle and Ricky clearly aren’t healthy, it’s gonna take Simon some time to figure out his bag, and there’s always McBeth but I think Heimburg has a chance to become the clear best player in the world this year.

Well...I won my B-Tier MA50 last weekend and I feel like the cart played a big part. We played on a ball golf course, so it was longer terrain and there was wind and rain. I think it would have taken a bit more of a toll on me if I carried. I was also able to carry a lot more snacks, water and towels thanks to the cart.

No tournaments in March, but eyeing two B Tiers in April.

Pretty cool to have the new global masters ranking out there for 40+ My goal is to finish in the top 20 for MA 50....stay tuned!

I’m feeling a little demoralized to be honest. No matter how much I try, no matter how many videos I watch I’m just not figuring out how to throw with any real distance. It sucks to stand on the pad of a 365 foot hole and know a 2 is out of the question.

I'm also not going to hit the chains in 2 if I'm throwing 365 feet from the pad - unless I make an incredible long distance 2nd shot. But, I feel reasonably confident I'll make a 3 and that's fine! I can try for a 2 on shorter holes.

I'm concentrating on throwing it straight at the target which involves a controlled throw with rehearsed footsteps. I CAN throw further if I RUN and throw, but I give up control when I do that and I'm just trying to play under control.

At 50, I'm not going to suddenly get stronger and fling it like a 25 version of me. Footwork was a big breakthrough for me. I generally watch the female disc golfers on video because their footwork is easier for me to grasp and at this age, I'm not going to throw as far as the bros who make videos and just launch it.

I’m having a difficult time coming to terms with being 51

This is a great approach. From here you can start experimenting with other discs that might help get you more distance. I'll bring some extras the next time we play. Maybe next week after work? Looks like the weather might be a touch better next week.

I'm open to trying new discs, but I'm quite comfortable with the Leopards. Think I mentioned I got a bunch of discs over Xmas from a buddy. I tried them all and....meh. I'll bring them too so you can look them over, but I think they're junk. The putter I like, though.

Let's let it dry out a bit and target any work day that works for you. I'm off at 1:30 every day now and have my son's car. Is there something a little easier than Pier that's convenient for us both? Greenway is a swamp.....Orchard maybe?

Let's plan on Orchard!

Daylight savings can’t get here quick enough, 65 degrees right now and I’m just dying that I can’t get out and throw

Some huge news today on the coverage front as the DGPT has acquired Jomez Productions. Seems like Jomez is pretty much insolvent and wasn’t able to pay the agreed upon rights fees to the DGPT, so this is what they came up with. Beginning of the end for post-production. It’s been a rough year for Jomez just in terms of entertainment value with all the chase card winners.

DGN has gotten better each year but they are at the point where they need more cameras on the course. Just getting the top two cards isn’t enough now for MPO and there is a crazy amount of downtime. They also need to move on from Nate Doss, I’m sure he’s a great guy and ambassador for the sport but he’s a bad commentator. I’d like to see Earhart in the booth and not out on the course, and they need to give Sexton an attractive enough offer to where he’s willing to transition to the booth full time

I really don't have the problem others seem to have with Doss. He doesn't annoy me any more than Philo and his "mature trees." And I imagine if DGN were to axe Doss, they'd be losing Val Jenkins as well. Considering that Elaine King is pretty much as disliked as Doss and that Juliana Korver seems to be like Sexton in that she's going to be playing at least somewhat regularly, I think DGN would be really limiting their options on the FPO side of things.

If they were going to sweeten the pot for Sexton, I'd imagine they could just go all the way and do the same for Jerm and Uli. Sexton is the one of the three who still seems to make an occasional Top 10, especially in majors. I get that Uli is still hurting, but the guy has one national tier win in his career and already had to drop out of the Discraft Elite Team.

I've been enjoying the season so far, probably because I've been watching a lot more live coverage and less of the Jomez stuff. Which means that I've enjoyed the chase card winners. Certainly no shortage of interesting stories on the MPO side. Calvin being the best player in the world but still not getting it done in a major. Seems like Prodigy and Gannon's lawyers were able to talk them both into doing the logical thing and just riding out the year trying to make as much money as they can with one another. It's kind of interesting that Prodigy bet on KJUSA over Dickerson last year when it was their young players (Gannon, Isaac, and even Alden Harris) who were the better investments. Still big questions over whether McBeth and Ricky can get back. Ricky's wrist issues are apparently related to the lyme disease and that stuff can tend to not clear up. Paul seems to rely increasingly on rounds where he just hits everything from circle two and it's tough to do that 3 or 4 rounds in a row.

FPO is less interesting. You feel that if Kristen plays well, she'll win pretty comfortably. It was nice seeing Kat Mertsch take advantage of her chance this weekend because it seemed like she might be like Ella as someone who just can't quite put it all together. I had, (irrationally, I suppose) hoped that whatever the merits of the decision, that having Nathalie Ryan ineligible would make most comments sections less toxic, but I was wrong. Half of them can't tell the difference between Nathalie and Ella. I don't think Paige can really challenge Kristen consistently so long as she refuses to really work on her forehand. Maybe Evalina or Henna can fix whatever mental blocks they have on the putting green, as they're the two who are at least as talented as Kristen tee to green. As a crappy player looking to improve, I think I enjoy watching Ohn the most because I can see the concrete steps she's taken to improve. Last year, she developed that flex forehand to give her at least one shot with decent distance. This offseason, she seems to have really worked on adding power to her backhand. She's never going to be a bomber, but she seems to be able to get 350 off both wings now, which is a big difference from even two years ago and gives her a chance considering nobody is close to her circle 2 putting.

I do not like Philo at all if that makes you feel any better. If the choice is Doss or Philo I’ll take Doss easy. I didn’t consider the Val Jenkins angle as I don’t watch much FPO on DGN. I watch it every weekend so I shouldn’t complain too much. Status quo is fine for now, as they continue to grow and make more money it’ll get steadily better. Jonesboro on Sunday was my favorite sports viewing experience of the weekend, just fantastic stuff.

I wonder if DGN will be able to leverage the Jomez camera people to increase the number of cards they show. Always thought it was weird to basically have two camera crews following the top two cards. I’m sure shooting footage with the intent of editing it down for post production is much different than shooting for a live broadcast, but it would be cool if this leads to us seeing more shots live

Portland is heaven right now if you are a disc golf fan. All the players arrived last week prior to the BSF and I think some are sticking around until the PDX Open unless they are going up north to play this week. Lot's of guys have been spotted playing at local leagues and doing practice rounds at other courses. Lot's of pop ins and signings at some of the retail stores. (I might go meet Philo tonight). I went out and walked inside the ropes on Saturday and get to watch some of my favorites up close and personal. I spent time following Bradley Williams and Cale L for a few holes.

The BSF new layout is pretty incredible. The players shredding that thing are just on a different level. There are some local players who qualified and are 970+ rated and above and they were shooting +4 to +8 each day. They are leaving the gold layout in through Thursday but I'm not gonna be able to play it. :( It will be playing in the Beaver State Armature & Masters there in two weeks, but they'll be back to original east and west layout.

Eagle was simply amazing. The roller on 5 and the air shot on 15 are two incredible feats that need to be seen to be believed.

I'm heading down to Eugene this week to play in the World Masters event. Four day tournament with players from all around the country / world. Wish me luck!

Go get 'em, Hack! Lemme know when you want to slum it around with me at a local muni.

Related: one my twins is with me at work today - 3rd time positive for Strep in the last 6 weeks. Unreal. But, he's got different antibiotics coursing through his body and so at 1:30pm, we're hitting Memorial for his first round. If I encounter a pro, I'll tell them Hack says "hey".
