**** Official Dolphins 2013 Thread **** (1 Viewer)

Tyson Clabo now being tweeted about. Miami has him in town today. He has incredibly consistent stats on PFF the past 4-5 years, undrafted in 2004 out of Wake Forest, would be a great pick up, just not sure what awaits at LT. This Dallas Thomas kid played LT his Soph and Junior years at TN.

Taylor has some kidney issues which is why he fell so far. Teams all passed after reading the medical report...it doesn't sound too good to be honest.

Bryant McKinnie who ballooned to 400+ lbs in Minnesota before they finally released him has signed back with the Ravens. 2yr/$7M max deal with a lot of weight clauses I'm sure.

Sounds like Andy Reid is planning to let Albert stay at LT and put the rookie at RT. This would seem to increase the chances that Albert remains with KC.

To those that live outside of Miami and South Florida, this probably does not have the impact it does down here but the stadium deal that the Dolphins were having special elections on has been killed on the Florida House floor...some Republican who is the house speaker from a little town called Wesley Chapel that sits a few minutes North of Tampa promised the Dolphins they would vote on this and then they didn't. So the bill is dead and plans to renovate the stadium plus get Super Bowl 50 has been tossed in the can.

We could argue that Residents should not pick up the bill for the stadium but this was gonna be a 50/50 split with the owner and if you see what they were gonna do, really nice set up with a cover for the fans so we don't melt on 1:00 Sept and Oct games when it is 95 degrees and 95% humidity in that place.

The money was going to come form a 1% increase in the bed tax or hotel tax so mainly tourists are footing the bill so I thought it would pass and it the bill did make it out of the Fl Senate and then died on the House floor...I would have been fine with whatever the voters voted on down here including 40,000 that had already cast early ballots...let the people vote but Florida decided to take the power out of the peoples' hands which is disappointing.

You can read all about it on the internet. I'll try and link or grab the story.

The link has a nice picture of what they planned to do including all new seats, the shaded overhang, pretty cool.

The propsed renovations look very cool. Reminds me of European soccer stadiums.

I'm not a fan of these things, but it should be up to the people. Ross seemed to be handling it much better that Richardson is doing to get money here in Charlotte.

Ross is learning how things work in Florida. You never win first time in Tally. You just don't. Just ask the Genting people. It will be interesting to see what the NFL does now that their bluff has been called. My bet is that they still award SB 50 to Miami and Santa Clara gets 51.

Florida finally has a bill to ban texting while driving. Florida is only 1 of about 10 states where texting while driving is legal.

They haven't gotten over being suckered into the Marlins deal yet. Ross needs to give the area some time to recover from that before he asks for more public money for his private organization.

Clabo signing with Dolphins today on a one year deal, per his agent. Great move for Miami, one which solidifies their biggest position of need (especially given that it was not tended to in the draft.) Clabo was recently called the "most consistent RT of the Pro Footbal Focus era" by the PFF editors. He allows Jonathan Martin to swing to the Left Side, where he played the final four games of 2012. At 6'6" 329, Clabo is a big man and one who played both ZBS and power blocking schemes in ATL.

Great offseason by Jeff Ireland. Now its upto Philbin and Tannehill to show that they can make major strides in season two.

Clabo signing is great for the right side of the line. Wonder if they could gamble with Thomas at LT and kick Martin inside to RG, pair him with Clabo on the right side with the new rookie TE from MSU and you got some major beef running at teams. I think Martin will struggle at LT, we'll see but the OL in Miami just got a lot better. Clabo is top 5/10 at RT in the NFL, he should be terrific.

Good day MOP. Agree, there are still questions at LT but much needed step today.

Some Mike Sherman comments I found interesting...

The Miami Dolphins quarterback showed command at the line of scrimmage and stood tall in the pocket. He ran the two-minute offense gracefully and didn't force the ball to his primary receiver. He was supposed to be a raw project, but he didn't play that way.

Now with a full season under his belt and a superior group of playmakers to throw the ball to, Tannehill would seem well-prepared to make the leap in his second season. At least, that's how Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman sees it.

"This young man will be the most improved quarterback in the National Football League from Year 1 to Year 2 this year -- I promise you that," Sherman told the Dolphins' official site on Wednesday. "He's working extremely hard.

"I thought he had a good rookie year for what we asked him to do," Sherman said. "Now, with us building up some more weaponry around him, I think he'll be even better this upcoming year. So we're excited to get on the field and start practicing, OTAs and minicamp, and see where we're at."

It's not a surprise that Sherman believes Tannehill is a star in waiting. Still, Tannehill showed signs of true ability as a rookie. Given the experience and a better supporting cast, the stage is set for a breakout season.

Like the Clabo signing. Hopefully Martin has been getting bigger and stronger.

This team looks complete on paper, hopefully Tannehill can elevate his game.

Tight end and corner back will be interesting this year. There are players at each position that have the potential to step up and take full time roles. Taylor and Davis could be a strong tandem at corner if they pan out. It will be interesting to see if Egnew gets it together or finds himself cut.

Safety should be a need next year too, unless Don Jones or Jordan Kovacs prove to be diamonds in the rough.

Dolphins' future in Miami uncertainBy The Sports Xchange | The SportsXchange – 13 hours ago

Miami Dolphins CEO Mike Dee suggested Sunday the Dolphins may have to relocate at some point as a result of Friday's decision by the Florida legislature to reject hearing a referendum that would have provided public renovations to the Dolphins' Sun Life Stadium.Dee had said last month owner Stephen Ross would not renovate the stadium without a public-private partnership. Ross reiterated that there will be no renovation in an interview with CBS4 in Miami, saying it would be "difficult" to do the renovations on a more limited basis.Regarding the team's future in Miami, Dee said, "I wouldn't want to prognosticate what the future holds, but it's clearly bleak."Although Dee said Ross won't move the team, Dee said the next owner could move the team, possibly to Los Angeles. Ross has said he won't sell the team in his lifetime, but Dee didn't rule out a sale during Ross's lifetime."The Dolphins are one of the only franchises in the NFL that don't have a long-term lease with their community," Dee said, according to The Palm Beach Post. "At some point, somebody's going to buy the franchise from (Ross), and clearly the stadium is the first thing they would need to address."

I hate that it's the Dolphins involved in this, but it's really time everyone took a stand on using public financing for these stadiums. But, unfortunately I'm sure the politicians will back down eventually.

Not a bad thing IMHO, you are hoping that one of your young TE's steps up, if not you see what is available next year or maybe bring Keller back on another short deal. Grimes is coming of an injury so that is the only way you take him and again you drafted a couple young guys. If Grimes plays well then you look at a 3 year deal if not you walk away. Clabo is nearing the end of his career although still a good player, maybe could have went 2 or 3 years at most. But if the season goes well and the team improves greatly you are drafting in the 20's somewhere and RT is more likely to be a position you can get. I like the short term signings to guys that aren't center pieces/have questions.

Don Jones was invited a lot of places prior to the draft, many thought he would go top 150/200. Ran a 4.4 at his Pro Day, Vert of 42, has some impressive tape but how good was the Arkansas State opponents? He was an interesting pick Miami got late. I hope he can find his way on to the team.

Dolphins are 10 mil under the cap and will be another 10 mil under after June 1. they need 8 mil to sign their draft choices.

With 12 million under the cap, if Clabo, Keller, or Grimes looks good they can simply extemd them with cap space and they can still make a move for a Good LT and have the money to sign them long term (Albert, Peters, etc)

Dont forget Starks/Solai and Reshad Jones are all in their last years as well.
I'd like them to move Odrick inside for good and deal Starks if they can for an upgrade elsewhere. Starks is set to make the Top5 avg they only have him under a 1 year deal...guess they will let him walk like Jake Long.

That's another thing about Long that makes you so mad you could scream. Ireland knew last year before the season started hat he wasn't gonna stay with Long, he should have traded him for whatever he could get. Certainly could have fished a 1st or 2nd from someone for him, no questions asked.

Long suffered through the 2011 season with a bad back and then tore his bicep which forced the team to put him on IR. I doubt any any team would have handed over a first or second for him at that point.

Agree.

And any team trading for him should have agreed for a contract extension.

We saw that Long market was quite soft, so I don't think the Dolphins would have been able to trade him for an early pick

"At some point, somebody's going to buy the franchise from (Ross), and clearly the stadium is the first thing they would need to address."
I wanted to wait a day before commenting but I have some gems to share with you guys from an interview the local CBS affiliate had with Mike Dee where he said on air that Owner Stephen Ross was not aware just how bad the stadium was in when he purchased the Miami Dolphins...that is just laughable and total bull. You mean to tell me that the man spent $550M in 2008 to own 50% of the team, bought the other 45% for about the same price in 2009 and became the majority owner of the team, $1.1 Million. Nowhere in that process did this man who the University of Michigan named their business school after recently...nowhere in that time frame did he ever take a look at the stadium and say "Hey, this place is gonna need a major face lift."???

It gets so much worse and even though I have some of the funkiest math skills I promise you I did my homework and the numbers are kind of shocking so check this out. Ross and Mike Dee(off my X-Mas List) had been pimping the fact it was a 50/50 split and the tax payers would pay about $200M, Ross would kick in $200m...I should really make a huge thread and launch the attack at who this squarely rests on...Roger Goodell. The problem is this board doesn't like to hear it. Ross is leveraged to his ears, that is true and he made a bad investment in the Miami Dolphins on the surface. But look at the numbers he(Ross) tried to pull over the entire state of Florida and then I'll tie this right in to Goodell, I promise.

Regardless of the fact I personally wanted the people of this area to vote and would have been fine with the results, despite that personal bias I have/had you cannot in this country demand that an election simply take place. No matter how much Slap and I think the people in Miami should all contribute an extra $5 to fund public education, we can't just go demand that we hold a special election about it and force folks to vote, it doesn't work like that and essentially the Miami Dolphins never asked permission, they simply started spending and worried whether the bill would pass later. You cannot just buy an election and have it take place and pass laws that way. We could go on and on about this but if you think about it for a second, it simply is wrong and I cannot blame the Florida Legislature for wanting a full year notice instead of having something stuffed in at the end of their session. It's not the State of Florida that is Ross' problem. Now when people like Ross act like a baby and have the Miami Mafia press release thru Mike Dee saying the outlook is "Bleak"...usually when that happens you can trace it back to the beginning and see that Ross was actually mad he wasn't able to cheat on this a little. Let's take a look at the math because you will lose your mind when you read this.

The Miami Dolphins didn't even want this to go to a vote, they were pressing the city of Miami, Miami Gardens, and Dade County...they never wanted a vote, they wanted Miami to just give it to them and not even allow the community to vote. In the cover of night Stephen Ross was trying to get a deal put thru, why the initial going around the people? Let's let that simmer a minute and let's invite Roger Goodell into the cuts because he really is the Mafia Boss of the NFL.

He is literally shaking teams and cities down by dangling Super Bowls and such. And if you do a little reading which this group of football fans does do but if you do a little reading(most fans don't) you will find out that Roger Goodell and the NFL will kick in for part of the stadium upgrades if you have a public private partnership. Read that again because it should start to set off the light bulbs for many Dolphins fans, and NFL fans in other cities. It gets worse...

So if Ross gets some of the money, which in this case is actually a majority of the almost $400M they need to renovate the stadium...the campaign is that Ross was spending 50% of the money or essentially $200M...but wait a minute, the county and state with the deal in place would account for almost all of the money you need to make the stadium upgrades plus what Goodell and the NFL kick in...WHERE EXACTLY IS ROSS SPENDING HIS OWN MONEY? Pssst, he isn't. So what exctly is Ross really putting into this deal? Whatever the gap was surely Goodell and the NFL were ready to kick in. So Stephen Ross was going to spend NONE of his own money at the end of the day. That is the truth and because of the wretched Steve Loria and what he did to this city by not leaving it to a vote and strong arming the local politicians with the Marlins...because of that we got this mess.

So what are you really paying for Stephen Ross? It doesn't sound like you were paying for anything and so I speak for myself and many other fans after they learn the truth about what you were trying to swindle and get done. I was all for the stadium upgrades, would absolutely love it but the owner who reaps those profits need to pay for it. If Ross is not liquid enough, not my problem. Sell the team, you suck at running it anyways. And please keep playing those pocket deuces you keep pushing because it's a bad hand Mr Ross and the fans are holding pocket Aces, what's your move? Move the team? Just try it, I know Cleveland got hosed but I find it hard to believe that a team with the rich history that competed in 5 SB, 3 in a row, and winning back to back including the perfect season...go ahead and threaten with the "bleak" comments. I was trying to secure a couple of lower bowl tickets for the season but you can forget it when they threaten the fan base here. Fans should be in droves out at the stadium protesting but we don't have many passionate fans here.

Guys I'm sorry for being so passionate in opposition to the Miami Dolphins, it's hard to imagine I am a fan at times but I care so much and it hurts so much to watch this team struggle with poor leadership, ownership, and management. I feel like I have to at least share what I know and point out some of the facts and figures we really would like to not think about. I wonder if fans have to deal with this nonsense in New England, Pittsburgh, Denver...why can't we have a solid owner down here who has a real plan and knows what he is doing?

See, I didn't even bring up the Miami GM :)

Excellent post MOP. I would say, to the Phin's credit, they have handled this a lot better than my local Carolina Panthers have. All around it is a better deal for the local taxbase. That is just being the least dirty shirt in the bin though. In principle, this shouldn't be forced on any city/county/state. It is disgusting.

The torn bicep maybe, but linemen with back problems raise a few flags. I'm looking forward to reading your Ross post.

Results are back for the votes cast in early voting and absentee on the Sun Life upgrade referendum before the House killed the bill (they counted them anyway). 57% opposed it and 43% were for it, so it was likely DOA even if Tally approved it.

Reshad Jones did not report to OTAs today, speculation he wants a new deal.
Good news: He reported today

Bad news: Rookie-Jamar Taylor had surgery today for sports hernia and going to miss a lot of time. Not good for someone we expect some instant returns from.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/5/21/4353110/jamar-taylor-injury-dolphins-surgery
Sounds like he'll be back for training camp. It isn't ideal to have the first three picks missing time right now, but I don't think any of them need to make an immediate impact. Corner is the weakest area though.

Dolphins are in the hunt to sign Vonta Leach. Would be nice to pick up a Pro Bowl FB to pave the way for Miami's unproven HBs.

Rotoworld:

The Miami Herald reports there's "continued skepticism" among Michael Egnew's Dolphins teammates that he's ready to take a step forward this season.
We heard a few good things about Egnew during OTAs, but always a top-notch athlete, it's not surprising he looked good without pads on. It's his toughness and football IQ that have to improve. We're not holding our breath.

Source: Miami Herald
The Miami Herald now considers Rishard Matthews the "heavy favorite" for the Dolphins' No. 5 receiver job.
Miami's most trusted Dolphins source left Matthews off its projected 53-man roster last month, but reported in May that he had been standing out at OTAs. Per reporter Barry Jackson, GM Jeff Ireland has been "very pleased" with Matthews' play. Roster spot or not, Matthews isn't going to come into any fantasy value.

Source: Miami Herald

Rotoworld:

After a solid beginning to spring practices, Dolphins TE Michael Egnew reportedly "faded" late in the offseason program.
Egnew's blocking "remains questionable," and he's not considered likely to open the season as one of Miami's top three tight ends. One of GM Jeff Ireland's biggest draft blunders -- and Ireland has had many -- Egnew is squarely on the roster bubble just 15 months removed from being a top-80 overall pick.

Source: Miami Herald

Sounds like Odrick has been lining up exclusively at DT.

Brent Grimes sounds like he is having a good camp so far.

A lot of 3WR sets.

Rotoworld:

Dolphins FB Jorvorskie Lane is practicing with the third-team offense at training camp and is in danger of losing his roster spot.
The Dolphins apparently decided during Jeff Ireland's pre-training camp vacation that they're going to be a three-receiver, one-tight end team that uses an extra tight end whenever it runs out of the I-formation. It's also why the Fins decided against signing free agent Vonta Leach. Lane struggled as a lead blocker in 2012 and does not offer pass-catching ability.

Source: Miami Herald
Coach Joe Philbin praised Lamar Miller for being "very fundamentally sound" as the Dolphins began training camp.
One trait we noticed on Miller's rookie-year game tape was composed play, consistently running within the design of the offense. The same couldn't be said for David Wilson and Bryce Brown. "I think his knowledge of the system has definitely increased," Philbin said of Miller. "He appears to be a lot more comfortable with what he’s doing. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of indecision in his play." Miller is a prime 2013 fantasy football breakout candidate.

Source: Palm Beach Post
The Miami Herald reports Ryan Tannehill "failed to connect" with Mike Wallace during the first day of training camp.
Per beat reporter Armando Salguero, Tannehill continues to rely on Brian Hartline in the passing game and was "more comfortable" throwing to Brandon Gibson and Dustin Keller. Signed to a $30 million guaranteed deal this offseason, the Dolphins will get Wallace more involved as he becomes acclimated in the offense.

Source: Miami Herald
A Dolphins personnel man told the Miami Herald the team expects "a huge year" from Daniel Thomas if he stays healthy.
Thomas was the clear-cut No. 2 back throughout minicamp and OTAs, but the Dolphins will let him compete with Lamar Miller for playing time in training camp. Even if Thomas can put together a strong preseason, he won't be more than a short-yardage and third-down specialist. Thomas is entering his age-26 season and we know what he is. He's a plodding role player at his absolute best.

Source: Armando Salguero on Twitter
Dolphins rookie CB Jamar Taylor was a full participant on the first day of training camp after offseason hernia surgery.
Running with the deep reserves, Taylor promptly got burned deep for a 70-yard touchdown bomb by Jeff Fuller, thrown by third-string quarterback Pat Devlin. Taylor is better than that, but he's no longer considered a serious competitor for a starting job. LCB Brent Grimes and RCB Richard Marshall appear locked in.

Source: Miami Herald
Dolphins 2012 third-round pick Olivier Vernon opened training camp as the team's starting right defensive end.
The Fins loved what they saw from Vernon at spring workouts, and he flashed with 3.5 sacks on limited snaps as a rookie. This position may eventually go to Dion Jordan or perhaps incumbent RE Jared Odrick, but the Dolphins want Vernon geared up for an increased role. He has explosive pass-rushing traits.

Source: Miami Herald
Dolphins 2012 third-round pick Michael Egnew opened training camp with the third- and fourth-team offenses.
"So much for him having a great offseason," quipped Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. Egnew has apparently already been passed on the depth chart by fourth-round rookie Dion Sims. He's also behind Dustin Keller and Charles Clay.

Source: Miami Herald

Oliver Vernon appears to be having a great first couple of days (of course it helps to be against Martin). I think it would be really great if he could step up and regulate Dion Jordan to passing downs during his first year. Jordan has all of the tools to be a great player, but he probably needs more time to adjust and bulk up than most DEs.

Brent Grimes shut down Mike Walace all OTAs/Camps, he is the biggest attention grabber in practice since Brandon Marshall arrived via trade from Denver, of course he is no longer on the Phins. Vernon is going to make it difficult on Jordan to find playing time right away. Miami is going to have 3 strong pass rushers at some point.

Hartline is Tannehill's fav target for now. Keller gaining a lot of trust as well.

Rotoworld:

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald does not expect TE Michael Egnew to make the Dolphins' final roster.
The much maligned Egnew is already off to a rough start at training camp. He opened up with the third- and fourth-stringers and fumbled on Tuesday. The Dolphins may end up just cutting their losses on the 2012 third-rounder; they're already giving rookie Dion Sims a few reps with the starters.

I think Hartline and Keller are the steals from this offense in PPR. I can see each of them doing well, and Sims the rookie TE reminds me of Eric Green if you all remember him. Better blocker than Green but maybe not as soft hands but size wise very similar. Big red zone target for Miami.
