It looks good and I will definitely buy it. The question will be on which console. The 360 or One.

The Commander mode looks really interesting but do you play the whole game from the tablet? For PC players that will probably be great but I wonder how it will translate for console players? I hope there will be servers where this feature will be disabled.
You can play commander mode on your console or PC. The tablet is just another option (and IMO, a really cool one if it works. I could see myself picking up an IPAD just to command when I'm bored some place)
Well in that case its a hugely cool thing. This is the kind of thing I would get a tablet for a well.
I didn't command much on Bf2/2142, but I think using the mouse/keyboard will still be better than the IPAD. However, I think the tablet will be way better than commanding on a console. Much more precise and zooming in/out will be more intuitive.

The true value for the PC player is the ability to play from anywhere. Just a really cool idea. I just kinda worry about how well the tablet will be able to keep up.

One feature I wish they would put in is the ability to customize multiple monitor setups. I think it would be awesome if I could use my 2nd monitor just for the mini-map and the scoreboard.

May have been covered, but I didn't see suppression.
Some stuff might be disabled for the purpose of creating a good trailer. They want to show off the pretty graphics and smooth mechanics, not a blurred screen and shots going all over the place. They always have the player in God-Mode during these things so they don't die.

I have no problem with suppression. Not my favorite feature, but its ok. I usually roll with the squad cover perk anyway to lower the effects.

That has always been something I would love. If I would have 1 monitor for the game, 1 for map, 1 for another, it would be amazing.

I honestly think this might be the year that CoD dies. It looks like such crap compared to Battlefield, and there are other new shooter IP's coming out.

BO2 was the best selling COD to date. BF3's numbers were incredibly underwhelming. I do think COD is getting stale and BF4 looks interesting, but I think it's a little early to start throwing dirt on COD.I also thought BF3 looked interesting and was so excited and the game at launch was a total wreck, especially on PS3.

Just my opinions from what I've seen so far. It will probably sell well again, but the difference is significant at this point.

The kiddies will keep buying CoD because everyone else is buying CoD. As long as the game is functional, its bulletproof. The masses want a game that they can pickup and play. They don't want to have to learn how conquest mode works or the easiest way to take down a tank or anything like that. Cheap easy thrills is how you sell shooters to the masses. Constant action, constant points, constant unlocks/rewards. Someone who is just sitting down for 45 minutes a night to play around doesn't want to go 2-17 and get rolled by full coordinated squads or an experienced chopper team.

If console Bf4 really is 64 players, I will be picking up an Xbox1 or ps4 (whichever my brothers get) and getting a copy of the game on console as well. I'll suck (because I suck at shooters on the console) but I'll still have some fun.

Some random stuff that has been confirmed about Bf4 so far.....

- 5 man squads

- They changed up squad perks. Basically, you select the order that you want to receive the perks in a given round. Then, as your team collects squad points (squad heals, revives, suppression, assists, ect) your whole squad levels up and get you get access to the perks you chose. However, if your entire squad gets wiped, you lose all progress and go back to zero.

- you have the ability to customize pistols with attachments. you can shoot pistols while swimming

- ability to switch between 2 different sights on your gun.

- Instead of assigning various gadgets to certain slots, it looks like you can just select 2 different gadgets that are available for your class. So if you want to carry both an RPG and a stinger launcher, it looks like you can.

-green laser sights (apparently doesn't show up as bright to enemies, but you have to be more accurate with it in order to blind them)

- destructible/dynamic cap points (the skyscraper in the MP trailer)

- more sea warfare (boats that have attached jet skis that you can use to escape if it blows up)

- commander assets are tied to certain command points (if you don't have the cap point where the tomahawk missiles come from, you don't get them). I've been suggesting this for like 5 years.

- tanks have limited ammo for the main cannon and the time needed to re-load after you fire off a certain amount of shells (apparently 5) is greatly increased. This should force tanks to play more strategically instead of just blasting away.

-infantry ammo is tied to individual magazines rather than just one big ammo pool (like Bf2). So if you only fire 5 bullets from a 30 round mag and then choose to reload, you just gave away 25 bullets. I'll have to adjust to this, because I reload ALOT (EDIT: apparently this is in hardcore mode only)

-2 different kinds of ammo packs. We still get the traditional ammo boxes that you throw down. But there are also ammo packs that you can attach to teammates. This will let them keep moving while healing/resupplying instead of sitting around the box waiting.

Plenty of new individual weapons/attachments/gadgets showing up, but I don't feel like naming all of them. Overall, I really like what I've seen so far. Looks like they're pushing for more teamwork and going back towards some stuff from Bf2. Also love that the map they're show casing isn't some little dinky series of funnels like they did with Operation Metro at E3 2 years ago.

You gave me a real scare on this until you mentioned that it was hardcore only. I tend to reload after every kill if I can. This would have been a huge adjustment for me.

I'm pretty stoked for this game. I know you play on PC so you're used to this, but 64 players at 60 FPS on consoles is going to be great and is exactly what I was expecting from next gen games.

I'll be picking it up on the console as well to play with my brothers. Should be good.

The ammo thing really wouldn't be so bad. It worked fine in Bf2. With 5 man squads and commanders having the ability to make supply drops, ammo would be more readily available. Also, if they balance the classes a bit better, more people will be playing support. As of now, it looks like the LMGs are the only guns that provide significant suppression. That should draw some more people towards that class.

So are all of the BF PC peeps getting BF4? I am up in the air, with as little as I game currently.

It depends on whether I can afford a new PC right now. Well, actually I can't, but I'm gonna try to make it happen. BF3 barely runs on the one I have.

I am planning on it. Speaking of upgrades, I probably should upgrade my video card between now and then, still running with an ATI 4870.

I pre-ordered on Amazon - they give you a backpack with all sorts of free weapon upgrades, XP boosts, etc. Good stuff.

I'll be upgrading my video card the week before the game comes out. The rest of my PC is pretty future proof, but I'm still rolling with an NVIDIA 570. It gets the job done on Bf3, but I could use an upgrade to max out frame rates.

I might just try my hand at building another sff gaming rig soon. I tire of my family crapping up my beautiful rig.

I'm ready to return!

I have a mumble channel we can use if we don't have a TS or Vent channel. Mumble is a good program, there's also an iPhone (and android) app that you can use to talk to the rest of us if you don't have a headset.

Getting tired of DCUO?

Mad Cow, I may need your help. I'm looking to buy or build a gaming PC on the cheap. I need it to be able to play Battlefield 4 at the least, but I would love if I could future proof it for at least 4-5 years too. My current PC has been good to me, but it appears that I won't be able to upgrade what I have. My budget is tight. Like, almost non-existent. I'd practically go console with it if Playstation or Xbox allowed mouse/keyboard play. But they don't, so I wanna stick to PC.

Any help you or anyone else can give is appreciated.

Anything you can carry over to a new system? What are your current specs? Any idea of budget at all?

Here is what I have:

Phenom X4 9850 Quad-core processor (2.5 GHz)
6GB DDR2 memory
NVidia GeForce 9800 GT
1 TB HDD (Definitely need to replace this. I think it's going bad.)

Mid-size ATX Case
460W power supply

I doubt any of that will be carrying over to a new system.

I'm not really sure of the budget. My wife would prefer nothing, but she knows I'm gonna do something. She would probably prefer I buy something from Best Buy or somewhere where I can get a year or two to pay it off without accumulating interest. I'd probably have a higher budget doing that. But if I can buy what I need here and there between now and October, that might work too.

I'm gonna guess anywhere from $500 to $800 for a budget.

No, but am ready for a change. I have NCAA football coming up, BF4, The Last of Us, so some variety finally sneaking back in. I never played BL2 after buying it.

I know. I keep telling you to let me know and I'll run through it with you.

Honestly, we could do OK just upping the video card. Let me look at what socket you have and see if we can get by with CPU and GPU, maybe add a HDD - that would be cheap.

OK, your CPU is AM2+, which means we are in business, my friend.

Let's say you upgrade the CPU to an AMD II X4 640, that will run about $80.

Then all we need is a great video card, keeping with the budget in mind, how about a GTX 660 for $215? Want to go less, you can roll with a GTX 650 Ti 2GB version for $170. You could be a great shape. Thoughts?

I'm still running the i5 from the same build you did almost 2 years ago Mad Cow, plus a 5850. I was thinking of just upgrading the video card to like a 770 but maybe I need to start over?

I gotta say I love the 670. Tons of bang for the buck, although the AMD 7870 has great value AND a 4 game pack right now.

I have no problem upgrading the video card and CPU if that's all it's going to take. Or at least for a short-term solution. Like I said before, I'll also need to upgrade my HDD soon, so that's another $100 unless I go SSD. I'll likely also upgrade the RAM, but that won't cost too much extra for DDR2.

I'll likely have to wait until we have an official announcement on system requirements. In the meantime, I have time to look at options.

Yeah, we wait, but you are set up to just upgrade. You could even sell your old parts and get $80 or so to work with.

That 7870 does sound like a pretty great deal with the 4-game pack (I have TR, but would probably play the other 3). Any recommendation on brand? I often end up with Sapphire, as they hover around the bottom of the price point and seem to be decent cards.

I'd probably keep the existing system if I buy another. My wife's computer is much older than mine. Barely runs the Facebook games she plays. So she uses mine. I'm getting her and the kids a cheap laptop for Christmas. I was thinking something like a $300-$400 Asus there, although I haven't discounted getting them a tablet instead.

so apparently they sent out of a bunch of Bf4 alpha invites yesterday.

didn't get one. Maybe its because I haven't preordered yet :kicksrock:

So I made the "mistake" of typing "render.drawfps 1" in the console in BF3 today. I was getting in the neighborhood of 20FPS. Promptly adjusted all the graphics options down, but definitely looks like I need a new video card.

So, what's a good buy these days? Might keep waiting until just before the BF4 release as was the original plan, but if there is a really good deal between now and then, I'll definitely be considering it. Unfortunately, not a ton of discretionary cash floating around right now (had to buy a car not too long ago plus some other unexpected expenses)

How much exactly?

Probably going to try and stay at or under $200 if possible. Been an AMD fan, but if it's time to switch, I'm not opposed to that. Generally I'm all about price vs. performance ratio though. At the moment, figuring my best bet is to wait until later this fall until just before BF4 hits, and I think I missed that deal with the card + 4 games giveaway earlier in this thread.

BTW, just had my heat sink just about fall of my CPU couple nights ago (got an overheat warning, shut it down, while cleaning it noticed only 1 pin was holding the CPU on anymore. So bought a CoolerMaster 212 EVO to replace the old heat sink - this thing is a beast, but running close to 20-30C lower temps than before.

Any of you creeps feel like hopping on ts and playing? It's double xp weekend. Plus I'm trying to learn to fly choppers, which is fairly hysterical

So for the people following it does BF4 offer anything different/new? I didn't really like the changes they made from BC2 to BF3.

October 29th.

It doesn't seem like there's a ton of changes to the core game play. Madshot, I know you're a console player, so you'll at least get the benefit of 64 player MP if you upgrade to a PS3 or xbox 1.

What exactly did you not like about Bf3?

In terms of changes to the actual core gameplay....

- 5 man squads

- no more "specializations". You basically pick an upgrade path (they're calling them "field upgrades") with 4 specs in them. As your squad accumulates more squad points (reviving/healing/re-supplying eachother, following orders given by the squad leader, etc) you rank up the tree. (eventually giving yourself 4 different upgrades). Details available here. There's like 25 different specs

- carbines and DMR's (basically the semi-auto snipers) are now available to each class.

- Commander mode is back. You can play commander from your console, computer or even a tablet. The commander gets access to certain tools based on what flags your team owns on the map. (Gunship, supply drops, missile strikes, etc)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Of course there will be all kinds of new weapons and stuff like that. If anyone has any questions, I'll answer. Not a TON of info out yet. Should be more after Gamescon next week.

edit: oh yeah, you can also set it up so that the map shows up on your 2nd screen (or a tablet) if you have one. Been waiting for this for a while. Awesome feature.

Mainly the feel of the game. On console it felt like they went for the COD experience and put your guy on skates compared to the weighted feeling in the past. The atmosphere and levels of the game felt off and well below BC2. For me it just seemed like it was designed for the mainstream gamer, which to be fair is their goal if they want to compete with COD, but that is not what I love about the BF experience. Also on console the destruction is basically non existent and that is a major downer and removes so many gameplay options.
