***Official Jays Thread*** They spent $234 Million on this? (6 Viewers)

:lmao:

John Gibbons' week:

When Tulo gets healthy the Jays should be looking to move him Barney and Goins provide fairly equal defense, are more versatile and any dropoff offensively is minimal (as it is right now they're better off without him striking out twice a game, anyway.)  They should have no trouble getting a top setup guy in return.

:2cents:

Let's not get carried away. No one is touching Tulo and that contract until he turns it around... and if he returns to his old form, why trade him?

Barney and Goins are nice plugs but that's it.

Finally getting on a roll. 180,000 at the Dome on the weekend over the 4 games. Averaging over 37,000 game for the season. Very curious to see where payroll goes in the coming years.

Also, I really like Jason Grilli.

From Arden Zwelling's article this AM on Marco Estrada's continued greatness:

Marco Estrada did that thing again. That thing where he cruises through an effortless night of frustrated batters, awkward swings, and soft contact. That thing where he’s getting pop flies and weak grounders and then, seemingly on a whim, he strikes out three batters in a row with devastatingly fading change-ups. That thing where he’s quietly, efficiently, savagely dominant. That thing where nobody can hit him.

He’s been doing it all season, and while many will tell you his peripheral numbers are troubling and his batting average on balls in play is unsustainable and his stuff isn’t over-powering enough to have consistent success, Estrada just keeps going out and putting up results on results on results.

...

Estrada was brilliant, as he has been all season. He came into the game first in the American League in hits-per-nine-innings with 5.4. As a frame of reference,Clayton Kershaw, the best pitcher on the planet, is the only guy with a better H/9 than Estrada. His is 5.3.

And let’s stick with Kershaw for a moment. That’s about as high a wall as you can measure a guy against. But dive a little deeper and you’ll find that where Estrada’s even better than Kershaw is batting average against. Estrada led all of baseball in that category with a .168 mark coming into Wednesday night. Kershaw was a close second at .169. No one else in the majors has a mark below .178.

Look, we’re being selective with the stats here. Kershaw strikes out way more batters, walks way less, and doesn’t allow as many home runs. He’s better; way, way better. But, it’s not insane to compare Estrada to Kershaw in terms of not allowing hits. And, really, is that not the essence of what a pitcher is trying to do?

So, if you can only sign one and EE is significantly cheaper than Bautista... he is younger and both are likely 1B/DH in the near future (Bautista doesn't have the arm or range out there he used to).

wRC+ last 5 seasons:

EE 150, 146, 151, 150, 130

Bau 137, 135, 160, 148, 122

Mike Wright last time vs. Jays, "I think we give Edwin too much credit."

Great job making it 3 2/3 innings buddy. Now Ubadlol has come in to make sure there's no come back.

Pretty sure they should just cut their losses with Storen and release him. How do you hit consecutive batters with two strikes... which of course brings Arenado to the plate, which costs you the lead.

Seriously, this guy blows, when Cecil come back, DFA him.

The opposite of this is Grilli, who I love.

Few nice wins in a row tonight. 46-39 now, holding down a wild card spot. Also highest average attendance in the AL (which is worth watching for payroll matters and Bau/EE/Saunders extensions).

Saw tonight that starters have a 37-20 record, bullpen 9-19. The bullpen will always have more losses than wins but shows how good the rotation has been - particular Sanchez/Estrada/Happ. Bringing back the latter two for half the cost/commitment of Price looks like a great choice now and will look even better when he's in years 5,6,7 of that contract.

Also, I'm heading down to tomorrow nights game.

EE, Donaldson, Estrada All-Stars. Saunders in the fan vote. Wonder if Estrada could miss for injury and open the door for Sanchez as well.

Would love to see the sweep of the Royals tomorrow. #### that team.

It looks like the Jays are getting Melvin Upton (plus cash) for Hansel Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was a international free agent signing back in 2014. The Jays spent $330,00 on him. He’s a 6’2" right-hander that throws hard. Since signing, Hansel has spent 3 seasons in Bluefield, with a 4.61 ERA in 25 game, 18 starts, in total.

This year, he has a 3.06 ERA in 6 starts, 32.1 innings. He’s allowed 25 hits, 11 walks with 26 strikeouts. He’s 19 now.
Don't see any reason to dislike this move.

Was listening to Gord Ash this morning.  He thinks there is a big move going to drop....either Saunders or Bautista on the move for pitching...with Saunders being the more likely.

I guess they could put Upton on RF, Edwing at 1B, and DH Jose, and have Smoak on the bench.

I heard the Jays were scouting CC in NY the other day....I hope not

That doesn't make much sense.

His thinking was with Upton getting 16.5 mil next year, they can't sign all 3 of Jose, Edwin and Saunders.
Giving up you key players doesn't make sense when your goal is a WS. If they don't resign them, they'll get the comp picks for Jose and EE (not sure about Saunders). Only a contender would be interested a 3-month rental (Jose/Saunders). What contender can afford to give up a quality pitcher that can help the Jays win now? Doesn't make sense, especially for Jose. That would have to be a helluva an arm to make it worth giving him up.

While unlikely scenarios....

No one truly has arms to burn, but if someone among contenders does, the Tribe is a likely candidate

Also - Maybe someone like the Rays would like to take on the compensation they'd get for losing a QO'd EE or Jose to FA

Between being moved from Atlanta, to SD, and now SD to TOR, there's no way Toronto's even eating 1/2 of that 16.5, right?
Blue Jays acquired OF Melvin Upton and cash considerations from the Padres for RHP Hansel Rodriguez.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that the Padres will cover all but $5 million of the roughly $22 million remaining on Upton's contract.

I dunno. Still doesn't make too much sense to me. To drop from Bautista's bat (and all the 'franchise player' rah rah stuff) to Upton's, you're gonna need a helluva arm in return. Doubt the Tribe is giving up one of their top 3. Archer's gotta be worth more than a comp pick.

I think there is a new rule about traded players no longer qualifying for comp picks. So Toronto gets one if they hold and keep him but if they trade him the pick is gone.

I can't imagine they trade any of those guys anyway though but I can see Upton being a replacement for next year.

That Devon Travis at bat was ridiculous. Wins the game between that (which also had a near miss walkoff and forced Padres to go to bullpen) then scoring the winner on the wild pitch.

also, Drew Storen traded for Joaquin Benoit in a trade of relievers who were once good but now aren't.

Record an extra hour of the game last night (rarely watch live). Watch the Travis AB... watch Bautista come to the plate with the bases loaded... recording ends and goes straight into the Gibby press conference :wall:

Today's lineup not exactly showing Padres a lot of respect.

Tulo, Saunders, Martin, Smoak sitting. Dickey moved up so Estrada can pitch Friday vs. O's.

I really love today's lineup, awesome OBP and power at the top, legit speed and table re-setters at the bottom:

Bautista

Donaldson

Edwin

Saunders

Tulo

Martin

Upton

Pillar

Travis

I could definitely go for Rich Hill

#Dodgers tried for Hill/Reddick package, as @pgammo reported. #BlueJays also contacted #Athletics about both players, per sources.

Chavez is amazing at giving up dingers. Hopefully he goes the way of Morales. Would rather see Hutch called back up.
