*** Official Michael Turner 2007 offseason thread *** (1 Viewer)

I think the Titans will try to trade for him when they get on the clock for Round 2. The team has a long history of milking it's picks and I expect tomorrow to be no different.
I highly doubt a 2nd alone gets it done. This years 2nd and next years 2nd may do it though.
:)
you can laugh all you want but AJ views Turner as a highly valuable backup RB and kick returner and the anticipated compensation when Turner signs as a FA is a 3rd rounder. Tenn is sitting in the middle of the 2nd so the value is not that great in comparison to the insurance/special teams contributions/3rd rounder they will receive. A mid 2nd alone won't do it.
That's true but it would be a 2009 3rd round pick that they would be getting...assuming that the contract that Turner signs will merit a 3rd...we'll have to see where that level falls after the huge contracts this year. So really I would think that a 2nd and a midrounder next year(say a 4th/5th) would be enough compensation...its really just a matter of whether AJ will take it when he knows that Turner could be a valuable piece on a contending team.

Agreed that the 3rd round comp pick would be '09 but that's the way AJ works. He got a 3rd rounder this year (Brees), he's gonna get a 3rd next year for Edwards and if Turner stays he'll get one for him in '09. His philosophy has been to keep their best players and sign them long term, establish a value for a player and stick to it and build through the draft (not free agency). It would not surprise me in the least if Turner were still a Charger come Saturday night.

Here in Nashville the word is today that an official offer has been made regarding a trade for Turner. No confirmation on which team but it is one of Buffalo, GB, or Tennessee.

Expectation is that, now that he signed the tender, that he WILL be traded within 24 hours pending compensation to the Chargers.

Hmm, the timing has one (me) wondering if this is related at all to the Den-Hou pick trade, in which it is highly suspected that Willis will be chosen by Den ahead of Buf who was frequently projected to be holding out for him.

If their top pick at #12 is gone and the next BPA is in fact a trade for Turner, it would be astonishingly fast response, like they are desperate to grab one or the other (refering to Turner and Willis) or that Ten, GB, whoever is afraid that Buf may do so and try to pre-empt.

Speculation, nearly as wonderful as anticipation.

Oh, this ain't even close. There's some dweeby threads in the FFA that are way, way longer.
:X :bag: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: This is awesome, awesome irony.
Is it irony if its true?
The ironic event has to be true by definition I believe ... an incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs ...

John Clayton just said on ESPN that the Chargers have an offer on the table for a 2008 1st round pick. He doesn't know the team, but they have an offer that they are contemplating right now. He didn't mention about a pick in addition to that 1st.

Wow.Even if it's next year, you have to figure that AJ would strongly consider that.

Even if true, I'd expect the Chargers to sit on that offer through draft day to see if another team will up the ante unless AJ is sure that the other participants are going to hold firm with their offers. It's certainly getting interesting.....

I'd say he does it for sure. If the Titans are also making a play, I'd say its getting very close to a Turner trade one way or another.

A friend of mine just texted me that a trade with GB or Buf is supposedly imminent. He doesn't look at boards like this, only mainstream sports media, so my guess is ESPN or some sports radio here in NY.

Packers making their last run with #4? No need to worry about their #1 next year. They'll be rebuilding.

A #1 in 2008 is kind of what I was expecting. Some teams seem to value a #1 in 2008 about the same as they value a #2 in 2007, but I'd be shocked if AJ feels the same way. (I suspect he values a #1 in 2008 roughly the same as a #1 in 2007.) So there's room, using a #1 in 2008, for both teams to get a deal they like, with the other team feeling like they got Turner for the equivalent of a second-rounder, and the Chargers feeling like they received the equivalent of a first-rounder.I would pull the trigger on a #1 in 2008 if that's the best I could get. (I would not pull the trigger on a #2 in 2007 if that's the best I could get. I'd keep Turner for another year in that case.)

Report: Chargers trading RB Turner soon

The Chargers are prepared to trade running back Michael Turner in the near future after receiving an acceptable contract offer from another team, ESPN reported on Friday.

According to the report, an unidentified team has offered the Chargers a first-round pick in the 2008 draft, and San Diego is willing to accept the deal.

The Titans, Bills and Packers are among the teams who've expressed an interest in Turner, although San Diego General Manager A.J. Smith has said other teams are also interested.

Titans officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday. Agent Bus Cook, who represents Turner, said it was news to him.

"I have no idea. If (the Chargers) have, they haven't talked to me about it,'' Cook said. "If it's true, somebody has to call me to tell me about it.''

Asked which team it might be, Cook could only speculate

"I don't have a clue, unless it's the Titans, but I don't know,'' Cook said. "But they haven't called me about it. I haven't heard from anybody.''

What is that supposed to mean I wonder. He has no idea who it could be unless it’s the Titans, and then he knows? I mean the statement by itself makes no since but if that’s not a Freudian slip hint I don't know what is.

I interpreted the statement, unless it is avoidance, as the Titans are the only team to have had an agreed upon contract with MT, since Cook would be involved in the contract negotiations between the bidding teams and the player (MT). What negotiations take place between the teams SD and ?? are outside Cook's purview (if I spelled that word right).

Get off the bus, Bus.
I don't know, I found it interesting. Besides the fact that the Titians have been the most vocal pursuers of Turner they are the one team out of Green bay and Buffalo who can reasonably expect their 1st rounder in 2008 to be lower then this years since they have the best chance to make the playoffs. I doubt Cook knows what’s going to happen but all signs seem to be pointing their way.

Agreed that it appears that only the Titans have negotiated with him but the quote by Clayton leads me to believe it could be another team that didn't bring him in...maybe GB?Clayton wrote...The NFL team has offered the Chargers a first-round pick in the 2008 draft for Turner. In the proposed deal, the team that acquires Turner will keep him for 2 years. If they can't reach a contract extension with Turner, the team plans to franchise him.

That last line leads me to believe that the team hasn't sat down with Turner/Cook to formally discuss a contract which means it might not be the Titans.

I'll just say now that I'll be sad to see Turner go if he's dealt. If the Chargers land a 1st rounder (whatever the year) out of it and make sure he's out of the division, it's the best for everyone involved and they have to make that deal, but I'll still be sad to see him go.

Barring injury he will have a very productive career wherever he lands and I wish him the best (except when he's playing the Chargers, then he can have an off day).

PLease let this be the Titans...please let this be the Titans...
I dunno... it's sure looking like someone else now to me.You just might have to find out what SlimDale's really made of this year.
The agent not knowing the team is not an indicator that it's someone else. It's an indicator that he doesn't know about the trade.
I just think GB or BUF would be a team more likely to be giving up a 2008 1st round pick. GB's urgency is greater than Tennessee's given Favre's age, and their RB situation more dire (assuming LenDale is as talented as he's supposed to be and doesn't become a fat bust). With apologies to Undercover Brotha, Morency ain't starter material. BUF's RB situation is pretty much nonexistent, pending what happens in the draft.
