I did enjoy the opening segment with HHH and Reigns. Opens up a lot of storyline possibilities regardless of who wins the tournament. Reigns vs the authority? Reigns eventually getting frustrated about his inability to win the title and finally caving into the authority (heel turn)? Rollins being pissed that the authority replaced him the second he is no longer useful to them (face turn)?

Thought HHH did a really nice job selling the benefits of selling out, and while Reigns isn't good on the mic I think he communicates well with his facial expressions and body language.

I did like that a whole lot...especially when HHH put the belt on Reign's shoulder. Triple H played it very well.

Right....at the least they could have taken a page out of the old WCW playbook and done a lethal lottery where they make a big spectacle out of "randomly" assigning the names.....and then given us a Ambrose v. Reigns or Xavier Woods v. Kingston in Round One.

Del Rio/Zeb may give the whole Ziggler/Lana/Russev/SummerRae storyline a run for their money for worst of the year. Del Rio's been back 2-3 weeks (?)......and it already feels like boring midcard rubbish going nowhere. I already completely forgot he even beat Cena in his return.

I really had my hopes up they'd make something out of this Seth injury. Only reason I actually tuned in to Raw at all. They've got 25 some odd writers they employ (which is a big part of the problem in itself) and this hokey wrestling match tournament is the best thing they can come up with? The best part of last night's open was HHH punishing Reigns by making him face the BIG SHOW!!!! The same Big Show Reigns has beaten how many times already this year???? :lmao:

I'll also admit that the round of 16 set up is disappointing. Keeping New Day out of the equation is a mistake...even if they just get one spot and share it. Putting Breeze IN was a mistake - he ends up losing his debut match.

However...no matter how lame the first round appears...the final 8 is going to be a really nice collection of talent. They've already set up two face/face matches, so you can't assume any of the match results. Roman/Cesaro and Ziggler/Ambrose are going to be great...I just wish they were at Survivor Series instead of the RAW before.

Also, it was cool to see the Brothers of Destruction to close the show, but I don't get why they left Bray laying. Doesn't it make more sense for Wyatt to powder out and escape? Maybe use some of the "powers" to create a distraction so he can escape? I didn't get that finish at all...

Austin's podcast with Marc Lowrance is a must-listen for any fan of WCCW and the VonErichs. Interesting behind the scenes view on the insane scene in Dallas during the early 80s.

Agree, I thought it was great. Lowrance was a really good guest. And I'm someone who hasn't seen a ton of WCCW stuff; just a really interesting conversation.

I'm assuming the Usos will now join with Taker and Kane to make it a 4 on 4 survivor series match. But yeah, if the 2 of them alone can beat up all 4 Wyatts, why do they even need help? I guess Taker is scheduled for Raw this week. Maybe the Wyatts can get their heat back.

 
I'm watching ROH tag match The Addiction and The Kingdom. Both Kazarian and Tavin each had a title belt ready to hit the other. Ref's back is turned and both of them drop the belts and flop to the ground like they were shot.

I don't know how I feel about that contract signing last night. It was certain effective in getting the match over, but it felt a little icky to me.

Is there no traditional Survivor Series elimination matches this year at SS? That's kind of disappointing. I enjoy those.

Hey Vince, let's go no using dead people to get over storylines for now.

There are so many other ways they could have promoted this match, and it didn't need the "main event" spot for a contract signing to do it. Overall, it was pretty lame.

 
Raw ending just sucked. Flair's daughter is terrible on the mic right now. Paige, though worlds better than Charlotte, isn't great either. Was really hard just getting through this debacle. Great they're looking at new talent to end shows but neither girl did anything to stand out. Why they'd use Reid Flair's death -- who overdosed on heroin -- to try to get this thing over, is just mind blowing. Didn't they just ax Billy Gunn for drugs? Forget Billy Gunn. Why are they using a kid that overdosed on heroin as a talking point? Good lord

I saw a comment and very well may be valid one. Their ratings have been starting stronger Hour 1 and really tapering off end of show....thus they may be putting their best stuff atop Hour 1 and Hour 2 when most people are still watching.

Can't say enough good things about Cesaro and Reigns. Match was great. These guys IMO should be headlining the end of tournament. To me, it's not even close

I sat down to watch RAW last night, and they start with a darkened arena, weird music, and a bunch of dudes in hooded robes. If these guys were walking any slower, they'd be going backwards. FINALLY, the Undertaker and Kane come out and its the usual crawl to the ring. I could've dropped a deuce at the gas station up the road from me in the time it took for that whole spectacle to unfold.

 
Which reminds me...

I went to a WCW show in Dover, DE back in the very early 90s. Tom Zenk was wrestling someone (I want to say Pillman). Pillman comes out when he's introduced. The ring announcer introduces Tom Zenk...nothing. So he announces him again...still nothing. Finally, the third time comes and Zenk finally comes down to the ring. Now, this is unusual as Zenk was the face in this match.

Just before the bell, Zenk goes up to Pillman and says, "You knew I had to take a ####!!!" :lmao:

 
I actually thought the segment was compelling and both did a good job, but using Reid's death did seem to cross a line. I hope everyone in the Flair family was ok with it and it wasn't forced on her.

Otherwise it was a good show. With the exception of the Del Rio match the tournament matches were excellent. They've done a nice job selling the "opportunity of a lifetime" narrative with every competitor seemingly raising their game to another level.

I'm sensing the long awaited Roman Reigns heel turn perhaps. "I've never sold out and I never will". Sounds like a something you would say right before selling out. And putting him over clean against Cesaro seems like a foolish way to push Reigns as a babyface given that Cesaro is a darling of the IWC. I noticed a lot of backlash against Reigns after that on twitter. He was perhaps starting to win people over, and now they're back to complaining about Reigns being given too much again.

And that mic time for Ambrose after his win was interesting. Nobody else did that. Some shenanigans are on the horizon. :unsure:

Good observation. They do have a half hour before MNF starts, and someone pointed out that the Reigns/Cesaro match started right at halftime.

Ambrose heel turn on the horizon? Or is too obvious and they do Reigns instead?

 
I don't think an Ambrose heel turn makes sense. He's the most face guy working right now and his character, something between Stone Cold and Daniel Bryan, doesn't really work without the fans urging him on to do crazy ####. Which of course means the WWE will do it in a heartbeat.

Rapid fire booking of the Tournament Ending:

1.) HHH tries to talk Reigns into joining the Authority. Reigns declines. Authority helps Del Rio win the semifinal. Del Rio goes on to beat Ambrose in the Final. Del Rio is your new Corporate Champ. Face Reigns and Ambrose chase him until WM.

2.) Reigns beats Del Rio. Ambrose beats Owens, but then gets a powerbomb onto the apron after the match. A hobbled Ambrose barely makes it to the ring to start the Finals. Reigns starts off refusing to wrestle, then something clicks in his mind that it doesn't get any better than this and destroys a battered Ambrose, turning heel. Battles Ambrose until WM.

3.) Reigns beats Del Rio. Owens beats Ambrose. Ambrose plays Bret Hart to Reigns Hogan and cheers him on against Owens. Reigns wins and gets his "SS moment" with Ambrose cheering on. Shield 2.0 runs the show for a while while HHH throws multiple heels at them until WM.

4.) Owens beats Ambrose then takes a deal with HHH, willing to be the Corporate Champ and gets the win over Reigns in the Finals. Reigns chases Owens until WM, finally going over.

Rumors are that WWE did not panic with Rollins going down, they were planning on having Reigns be champion going into WM, so I think it's a foregone conclusion that it's going to happen, just will he be booed or cheered.

They're desperate to make Paige-Charlotte special but it's just not. No matter how bad they want the main roster divas to be at the NXT women's level, it will never be close. Different environment, different writing, and most of all neither Paige nor Charlotte can remotely compare to Sasha.

That was a complete joke last night.

 
Flair addressed the RAW segment on his podcast and basically went "no comment" in order to not bring heat on his daughter, but you could tell it really troubled him. He mentioned he cried and that Charlotte's mom was pretty upset. He mentioned multiple times by name that HHH, Stephanie and Michael Hayes had his daughter's back and best interests at heart. Couldn't tell if he was leaving Vince out on purpose, if he thinks this was a Vince decision, and the inclusion of Hayes was odd to me.

After listening to several podcasts talk about the Paige/Charlotte promo, I'm beginning to think that Ric Flair may have known all along, hell maybe even suggested it. This business is still real to him and the guy would sell his soul to Satan (or Vince, same thing) to put butts in seats. With ratings sagging, this type of action gets just enough casual people to talk about it to maybe get the numbers up. Just in time to start WM season.

I think he would have been more animated or at least more direct in his podcast.

Too much of the wwe ineptitude is clouded and shrouded with "just be patient and wait and see" like they tried to say when they botched the Bryan angle rise.

Flair is not that good of an actor imo

 
NXT

Austin Aries and Gunner, formerly of TNA, are reportedly backstage at NXT tapings. Big fans of both.

Gunner and Samuel Shaw were my 2 favorites in TNA. Shaw probably had the best character on wrestling television in the past decade. They just didn't know how to continue to write material for him. Shame. Really just shows you how far writing has fallen off the past decade+. WWE present day wouldnt be able to write for him either.

I think Flair is that good of an actor. The "dirtiest man in the business" could be working us all. Listening to Straight Shoot on the way into work this morning and they are thinking the same thing. With the relationship between Flair and HHH, the idea that he wouldn't call Flair before going forward with the angle doesn't make sense. You know HHH had him on the phone to let him know Charlotte was going to be in the main event slot on RAW, they make a big deal about that. The content had to be discussed.

 
HHH has so much love for Flair and his family...I don't buy for a minute that WWE forced Charlotte to do something she didn't want to do.

I think the whole thing is a huge work, and we'll see Ric involved on Sunday.

 
The best thing is that you have a compelling Divas match without a Bella, and with the Sasha Banks bullet still in your gun. Not to mention Becky, Nattie, etc. It's really time for more than one Diva story at a time. 5 hours to fill each week.

 
So Survivor Series is Sunday. When I was a kid, that was always my favorite PPV. The whole team elimination format thing was awesome, and allowed for so many possibilities that you always saw something fresh and new. Sadly, that isn't happening this year, but it could still be a decent show. A couple thoughts:

Taker/Kane vs Wyatts- Bray Wyatt should be the most compelling, interesting character on the show, but whenever they have a good idea for him, its like they chicken out after a week and go right back to the status quo. There were like 5 different stories you cold have told here, with Bray kidnapping, and stealing the powers(souls?) of Kane and Undertaker, and they chose the lamest possible one. They either should have saved this for Royal Rumble, or made it look like Taker and Kane were greatly overmatched. Instead Kane/Taker have dominated all 4 guys at once to build to a tag match with just 2 of them. I don't now how anyone could care about this match. This is the bathroom break match, or really the watch Cards/Bengals match. Ugh!

Charlotte vs Paige-I feel like I'm in the minority that really liked the promo to end Raw. The heels should say and do deplorable things, otherwise, why should we ever root against them, other than a vague(and often intelligence insulting) reason of "because they are the heel." What they need to do is capitalize on the reaction that promo got. If this match starts with a lockup, or a headlock or whatever, then they are doing it wrong. Charlotte should come out looking to put Paige in the hospital, just a brawl right from the start. I realize it will probably never happen, but this would be a perfect time for the rarely(never?) seen women's match with blood. Paige should be busted open at some point, really go all in, and take it to the next level. Ultimately, the best story they could tell is Charlotte getting too emotional, and Paige surviving and winning the title. Then you can tell the story of Paige, having needed help to get rid of the Bella reign at the top, now kind of becoming the thing she hated, and trying to survive all the former NXT women who are gunning for her title.

WWE Title tournament-Pretty much the second the brackets were announced, I think everyone made the same Reigns/Ambrose in the finals assumption. In fact, Reigns/Del Rio and Owens/Ambrose was probably the obvious final 4. There are 3 interesting ways this can go in my opinion.

Option 1: Reigns/Owens in the finals, authority backs Owens, Owens wins the title.

Option 2: Reigns/Ambrose in the finals, authority helps Reigns win.

Option 3: Reigns/Ambrose in the finals, Ambrose wins clean, and Reigns snaps and beats the crap out of Ambrose after the match. Turning heel, without the authority. Maybe HHH throws in with Owens before his match with Ambrose, but Ambrose wins anyway to really cement his status as the #1 face.

There are also 2 bad option in my opinion:

Bad option 1: Reigns/Owens in the finals. Ambrose turns heel and costs Reigns the title.

Bad option 2: Reigns/Ambrose in the finals, authority helps Ambrose win.

Personally, I like option 3 the most.

WWE Title tournament-Pretty much the second the brackets were announced, I think everyone made the same Reigns/Ambrose in the finals assumption. In fact, Reigns/Del Rio and Owens/Ambrose was probably the obvious final 4. There are 3 interesting ways this can go in my opinion.

Option 1: Reigns/Owens in the finals, authority backs Owens, Owens wins the title.

Option 2: Reigns/Ambrose in the finals, authority helps Reigns win.

Option 3: Reigns/Ambrose in the finals, Ambrose wins clean, and Reigns snaps and beats the crap out of Ambrose after the match. Turning heel, without the authority. Maybe HHH throws in with Owens before his match with Ambrose, but Ambrose wins anyway to really cement his status as the #1 face.

There are also 2 bad option in my opinion:

Bad option 1: Reigns/Owens in the finals. Ambrose turns heel and costs Reigns the title.

Bad option 2: Reigns/Ambrose in the finals, authority helps Ambrose win.

Personally, I like option 3 the most.

I like option 1 (Owens goes corporate, beats Reigns) but Ambrose accidentally costs Reigns the match then Reigns snaps on him and turns heel.

 
If Owens wins it all, who do they backfill the IC title with? Or do they re-steal the RoH idea of Owens holding both World and IC titles?

This question alone is probably enough to guarantee WWE doesn't push Owens to the top, especially since they just made such a big deal about Rollins having World/US titles. Same goes for Del Rio for that matter.

I'd put the IC strap on Cesaro though, especially after the match he just had on Monday. They should have saved that one for the PPV.
