*** Official *** Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (2 Viewers)

It was okay. I enjoyed it, but the acting was just okay, it was too predictable, it lacked the fun of a Star Wars movie but wasn't gritty enough to really be a war movie. I would have liked to see it, before all the reshoots.
Wasn't gritty enough? Good lord man what are you wanting? They didn't show body parts falling off ala Saving Private Ryan but other than that level of reality I'm not sure what would make it more gritty.

Call theater and see if you can move them! Or drop kids with neighbor!!
Too much other stuff to do today, I was already feeling slightly guilty for taking 2.5 hours to go see it.  We are the "drop house" for a couple of other kids, so while a good idea, that won't work.

I guess I'll have to avoid the internet for a week or so and then take the boy to see it over break.

Grand Moff Tarkin's appearance in the movie wasn't a big surprise but the fact that it was Peter Cushing via CGI caught me off guard. It was so seamless that while watching I thought it must be a real actor that had an uncanny resemblance.

Washington Post article on Peter Cushing CGI for Rogue One

Loved the movie. Tied in nicely with the lead up to New Hope without getting too nostalgic. As others have mentioned it's pretty dark and depressing without the melodramatic acting from the prequels (I'm talking to you Hayden Christensen).

Interesting take on the cgi at the end.  My first reaction was "hell yes!"  I might feel differently after the second viewing this afternoon.

Yes, that was an interesting take although I don't agree. As I mentioned when I was watching it seemed so authentic that I thought they had found a doppelganger for Finch. I was surprised this morning to find out it was CGI. It will be interesting so see if I feel the same way during the second viewing now knowing that it's CGI. Regardless on the first take I thought it was well done.

Liked it alot... but some things stuck in my craw. I rewatched the trailers and realized alot of those scenes weren't actually IN the movie, or were DRASTICALLY different. It was like the theater cut had an entirely different ending.

This happens in more movie trailers than you may think.

The marketing dept that makes the trailers is almost always a different group than the folks making the film. They grab whatever scenes they want (within reason) to put together what they feel is a great trailer.

And besides that, omits happen all the time, all the way up to the last week of post-production delivery, so those shots may have been in the movie almost up to the last minute, til they weren't.

I thought both Tarkin AND the CGI at the end were well done.  The author didn't agree, but thought that the CGI at the end failed.

Where do we think the deleted scene where she says "this is a rebellion, I rebelled" fell?  I figured after the mission to get the plans but obviously not, since no one comes back from that one.  Must be from when she saved the kid when the fighting broke out on Forest Whitaker's ("Buzzsaw Saxaphone's") planet, right?

I think ranking these movies is almost impossible because I've seen 4-7 a dozen times and they are old news to me now, while these last two are new and exciting. I will say however,

6. Sith

Just got out of seeing it. Thought it was really good. Probably in the top 4 of the Star Wars series.

Not gonna lie, got some goosebumps when Vader was shown for the 1st time.

The first time was cool but holy cow how about that last scene!!!

I've always been a big Star Wars fan since I saw the first movie in the theater when I was 6. As a fan I enjoyed the movie, but I wouldn't recommend a non-fan to run out and see this.

Being back immersed into the visual universe during the events of the original trilogy was great. I loved seeing the original Storm Troopers, the original Death Star, AT-ATs, Star Destroyers, X-Wings, Yavin-4, and all the little inclusions and nods towards A New Hope. I enjoyed the scenes with the CGI-'d Tarkin, but felt it was a little off.

The fight scene with Donnie Yen's character on Jeddah and the closing battle and space fights were fun and well done. Of course, the Vader cameos and the last epic scene were my favorite parts of the entire movie. This last scene was what we should have gotten at the end of Revenge of the Sith, instead of the epic let down of, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

I've always wanted an adult Star Wars "war movie", and that's what this is. Of course, being Star Wars and Disney this can't be a full on R-rated gritty war drama. It tries but comes up short. Taking out the Star Wars of it, the movie feels very run of the mill and by the numbers, with nothing really surprising or special about the story or characters.

A war movie like this needs to have compelling and interesting characters that make you care about them and their involvement and motivations. Donnie Yen was good (notice I can't remember his character's name), but none of the other characters were memorable and the acting was very average.

Jyn's character is nice to have a female lead to balance out the all-male group of Rogue One, but I never really cared about her as much as I loved Rey in last year's The Force Awakens. Her and Cassian never really came off as having good chemistry and he was just another forgettable character to me.

K-2SO was good, but I wondered if he was just included to add a little bit of Star Wars fun to the movie. I would have liked to seen it, before all the reshoots and wondering what was added or removed. Was this a darker and grittier war movie, or was K-2SO added to bring some fun & levity, or was it just not up to par to what we got... I had EXTREMELY high expectations for Rogue One, but I'm really feeling disappointed.

I want to see it again, but honestly I just want to fast forward through the story and watch several scenes again. This may change, but right now I'd rank them:

1) The Empire Strikes Back

2) A New Hope

3) The Force Awakens

4/5) Revenge of the Sith/Return of the Jedi

6) Rogue One

7) Attack of the Clones

8) The Phantom Menance

I got goosebumps at the end when they walked down that white hallway that opens a new hope. That was just amazing how they tied that together. In fact I think I slapped my wife's leg in excitement. :bag:

K2SO was in the movie from the very beginning. Reshoots were to make the story better overall.

Omg I can't wait to see this movie. I know I shouldn't be reading this but can't stop.

I thought it was ok.  One thing that the new SW doesn't get right that the old one's did was create characters that people invest in.  Mark Hammill and Carrie Fischer weren't great "actors", but they brought an attitude to the screen.  Jyn and Cassian are ok, but to me didn't have a lot of chemistry and just needed to be fleshed out more.  Donnie and Weng though, felt like they had been together for a long time.  Saw Gerrara seemed like he was going to be more important, but then really was more of just a plot point.  K-2SO was by far the best character.  He had the best lines and despite being a droid he seemed the most real of the characters.

The CGI characters mouths were annoying to me.  I was surprised to read that you guys liked it.  It reminded me of something out of the Polar Express.  DV was also weird. It seemed like his voice was just a bit off in the direction of the sound coming from his "mouth".  It was nice that they got JEJ back for it.  Riz Ahmed was fine, but after seeing The Night of it was hard to think of him as anything other than Naz.  One thing I thought they did very well was the ending.

2) A New Hope

3) Return of the Jedi

4) Revenge of the Sith

5) Rogue One

Polar Express comparisons...

I have pretty much hated them all since'83. Force Awakens to me was a carbon copy of the original with just a few subtle twists or differences. Sith, despite horrible acting the movie is interesting as it ties it all together leading up to '77.

The cast I have seen so far looks like it was put together purposely based on where Disney wants to launch and make a lot of money. It's formulaic and looks more like a United Nations group.

It was awesome 40 years ago. Whatever they are doing now Is just to make money and spit out a film every year to meet the public demand. Much like the Marvel movies which are in way overload at this point, Star Wars will eventually tarnish itself if it hasn't already.

Enjoy the weekend everyone

First.. no more "spoilers" needed.. If you haven't seen it now that it is fully released stay the bleep out of here .. especially what I'm about to type ;)

Really liked the entire movie. . Loved the tie ins from 3 to 4.. find it VERY strange people, including my Dad who I saw it with, didn't realize this is a "tie in" between 3 and 4.... I can understand not remembering "rogue one" ... But what part of "stealing the death star plans" confused some?

I will say I also was a little thrown off with the no scroll at the beginning. . Thought after the first scene they were going to jump to it but notta... I guess, since this is the go between of 3 and 4 they figured it wasn't needed.

Agree with others that cgi has come a long way.. Tarkin was well done and afterwards I told my Dad I need to re-watch IV for the 50+ time as I don't remember Leia saying "they brought hope" :bag:

Can't wait to take my daughter tomorrow so I can see it again.

IMO it was good, not great. Not better than TFA.

When will Disney make a full fledged "Vader" movie? I'm my dream world it's rated R.

Well, thanks for making the decision for everyone.
 it's like people going into a TV thread a day after a episode they didn't watch and complain that people are talking about it.

At this point, if you haven't seen it, expect that people will want to talk about it without the need for spoilers.

You cant compare Jyn and Cassian to Luke and Leia.  Those movies were about Luke.  That was the story.

This is not a normal Star Wars movie.  It was a one-off and if you've seen it you know why comparing the cast to Luke and Leia is preposterous.  Luke and Leia had 3 films to "character build".

Now a great comparison to Luke and Leia would be Rey and Finn from Force Awakens.  But it's still not fair to make the comparison until all 3 movies are out.  Without ESB and ROTJ, is Luke really a "great" character?  No way.

Give em a chance.

Very easy to compare.  If there wasn't Empire or ROTJ, ANH would stand out as a model of character development and casting for any movie to emulate.

I don't buy that.  Luke was a whiny teenager through half the movie. Without facing Vader, getting his arm chopped off, growing into a confident Jedi, getting trained by Yoda, overcoming loss and fighting hard to bring his dad back from the dark side.....who was he?  A good teenage pilot?

He was a boy becoming a man.

If you look at it from what he becomes it is a setup to show growth.  If you look at it from just ANH it shows a typical teenager who is naive, cocky, and sick of being told what to do by everyone.  His attitude isn't all different from Leah's, but she has rank, stature, and pedigree.

Other than not having the sweet battle cry the ending battle pretty much went like this.

In terms of the CGI, was Red Leader also CGIed?  He looked almost identical to his character in IV.

My whole family loved the movie. I think I got physically aroused in the last 5 minutes of the movie.

Yes.  Gold leader as well I believe.

Saw it with the DBOX seats tonight and loved it.  Like a super extended amazing Star Tours.  Gonna head out and see it again soon.

This was the movie I wanted TFA to be. The last act was absolutely amazing. I couldn't stop smiling. It was like I was a kid again watching Jedi for the first time.

Probably recency bias but here's my updated rankings.

1. ESB

2. Rogue 1

3. ANH

4. ROTJ

5. ROTS

6. TFA

7. AOTC

8. Phantoms Yo

My only gripe was the forcing everything in its place at the end for A New Hope. Why would a Senator for Alderaan be on the main Attack ship of an impromptu rebel assault? Really forced just to get everyone in their places but forgivable because of how awesome everything leading up to that was.
