*** Official *** Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (1 Viewer)

You also can't have rebels murdering their (innocent) sources, otherwise the sources may stop helping. (Not to mention the decreased sympathy for the rebellion that would inevitably happen if the galaxy knew how deplorable the rebels really were.)
do you feel in real life when rebellions happen that extremely nasty things don't occur?

I thought that scene was very true to how bad things can get.  Cassian even had that other scene where he explained to Jyn that they had all done horrible things to push the rebellion. I felt that really hit home.

Che and Castro seemed like big teddy bears

Any chance I can just walk on and get tickets for this tonight?  I was going to go over Christmas break, but I have some time tonight.

so hard to say since it is likely different every where.  We got to our showing (a non 3d) 90 minutes ahead of time last night and it was already sold out (we bought tickets ahead of time).

If you live close enough to the theaters, why not just go now and pick some up for tonight and then not worry about it?

I find it hard to believe that she accompanied the fleet just to collect the plans, when you consider that 1) the entire attack was unplanned and spontaneous, and 2) she had no idea if the plans had been obtained yet. Why would a member of the Imperial Senate risk death or capture just on the slim chance that she might pick up some plans that could have been just as easily delivered by a thousand other people?

It would have made sense to have Leia transport the plans under the cover of a diplomatic mission. But we know now that she wasn't doing that.

Her smaller ship was docked inside the rebel flagship. The fleet was more or less dispersing when they got word of the battle on the archive planet and Admiral Not-Akbar decided to attack. I don't think they contrived anything placing her there.

if I was going to pick on things:

- Satellite dish  the size of a small city sending the signal out and only one friggin' rebel ship has a USB drive? Seems like the whole fleet could have had the plans and scattered so somebody would be guaranteed to get away.

- It took days in hyperspace for Luke to get to Dagobah, etc. but literally everybody got communications about the battle and got there in like 5 minutes.

-The Empire seriously fragged its entire archive database after the transmission was complete?!?

Still liked the movie though.

Honestly I didnt think of that, lol.  Thanks

where did you get this information from?  Was it from the book?

I don't think the movie ever said how long it took him to get there.    If memory serves in V he leaves Hoth to go to Degobah, then the movies changes to the Falcon's scene in the asteroid field and then when they go back to Luke, he has just arrived in the Degobah system.

Here is the key to why the technology in the original trilogy is less than what it was in the prequels. The plans and how to make things were blown up here. Yes, the Empire was dumb to only have these in their database here but now, it makes sense why the old movies look old.

Jyn is the best female character in any Star Wars movie.

She was there to collect the plans.
Inside the main rebel ship in a fight over a secret Imperial base that holds all of their archived data. She's a legitimate imperial senator. There's no reason her ship should have been anywhere near there.

They should have shown the message getting "beamed" to her ship and then she could have said that line.

The fantastic end fight scene with Vadar continues to make me wonder why Lucas decided to make Vader and Obi have a patty cake fight in IV when they met.
Budget mostly and the state of movies back then. Didn't have all the choreography that they do now.

For decades before IV, Hollywood was able to put on fantastic sword fighting scenes going all the way back to Errol Flynn.   I don't think it had anything to do with lack of choreography knowledge.   He simply wrote and shot a very weak scene IMO.

Maybe the technology looks less impressive because it was made 40 ####ing years ago.

That's true but they also weren't trying to have a 63 yo man fighting a guy in a 80+lb unflexible suit.

One of the worse Star Wars movies of the series.  I went with my 13 year old daughter and her friend.  I'm an enthusiast that really likes the series (not to the extent of some people), and they both loved TFA.  All of us couldn't wait for it to end.

I really think you need to have character development in a movie.  At the end I could care less what happened to any of the characters.  There was absolutely zero emotional connection to anyone.
Agreed 100%. Action was awesome but characters really sucked.

Edit: agree with the character development not it being one of the worst of the series

Boy, I didn't feel this way at all.  I felt they were very engaging, authentic characters.  Had no trouble connecting to them whatsoever.

Memory fails me where I saw this exactly, but somewhere, must have been a book or comic, I swear Luke even put himself into some kind of Jedi meditation state and had R2D2 keep an eye in things because of the length of the trip and the x-wing's life support or something. Seems a lot of detail for a comic, so I had to have read that in a novelization of some sort.

May have been in "Heir to the Empire" because Luke was in space but his X-Wing was broken down. In order to survive Luke had to go into meditation to keep his body temperature up. I believe, it was at this time Mara Jade found him and turned him over to... someone, can't remember his name but it was not the Empire.

I just think of you ranked new characters between the two movies none of the characters from rogue one would have surpassed Rey, Finn, poe, bb8, Kylo ren or even maz except maybe k2so

No way. Rey was way better.

For Star Wars Rebels fans, keep an eye out for Chopper and The Ghost, both of which are in the background in the movie.  It might give a hint at how that series is going to end.

It was interesting they had planet name cards but held off naming Mustafar (I assume not to give away the Vader reveal).  That was a nice tie back to the prequels.

I liked the movie. Far above TFA.

And while the events in the movie lead directly into Episode IV, I don't think you need to have seen any of those to enjoy this movie. It adds something if you've seen them, but nothing that is part of this story, just little nuances.

I'm surprised at how many people were shocked by the lack of an opening scroll since they said there wouldn't be one I think even as far back as a year ago.

I was also surprised by the amount of reused Episode IV footage there was in this. If it wasn't reused footage, they went through a lot of trouble to make it look like it considering they were just a couple seconds long each time.

The cameo by 3PO and R2 annoyed me, but luckily you can just ignore it and nothing is lost.

Definitive Ranking

  • Empire Strikes Back
  • A New Hope
  • The Force Awakens
  • Rogue One
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • Attack of the Clones
  • Phantom Menace
If you were to include the Clone Wars as a movie (not the TV series), I'd be tempted to rank it in front of Return of the Jedi.  It was really good.

I'm kinda thick. What's the hint.
I think that the jedis on Rebels will die and this might be an indication that the whole group makes it to the big battle and they die off there.  I think we are going to get an alternate view of the battle of Scarif from the tv shows perspective focusing on those characters.

I didn't understand why he was there. Last you see of Vader in the prequels is when the Emperor has rebuilt him, which I thought was on Coruscant. Does Vader just like to go there to brood about what he lost there?

here is the wikia snippet

==================================

After the end of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire took control of Mustafar[12] and maintained secret facilities on the planet where Jedi survivors of Order 66 were interrogated and executed.[13] Rumor had it that Darth Vader carried out these interrogations, torturing the Jedi for any useful information before their execution.[14] Additionally, both Vader and Sidious often returned to the planet, using it as a focus for meditation on the power of the dark side of the Force.[5]

Oh so you think the blue hair kid and his buddy are on the beach island? That's interesting.

can you name which scenes?  I can't recall any reused footage but I have only seen it once and could have easily missed it.  I want to look for it next time.
Shots (and dialogue) of rebel pilots in cockpits are taken from the assault on the Death Star in IV and used during the assault on Scarif. And the shots of the crew firing the Death Star (pushing buttons and throwing levers).

Yes I have read a couple of things about this.  The pilots were CGIed but some sites are reporting that radio chatter and some of the footage was restored from IV from cut scenes.  Those scenes were never shown in the movies from what I understand.

You can read more about how the director found this old footage at the archives at Skywalker Ranch.  It is pretty cool

I have no idea who is where but the Ghost is shown twice in space above Scarif during the space battle.

They need to have a way to kill off both Ezra and Kanan to preserve the Jedi time line, and this is as a good a way as any.

You keep saying this about the pilots being CG but I don't think they are. I will find out for sure and report back on Monday...

I am only repeating what I read.  I can't know for sure I guess.  They digitally copied the pilots from the original movie and put them into Rogue One

Lucasfilm and Disney also used CGI to bring Grand Moff Tarkin to life, even though Peter Cushing died in 1994. The same technology was used to include Red Leader and Gold Leader from A New Hope in the Battle of Scarif and to include a young Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in the last scene.

also this from the director seems pretty clear CGI was used

And with a few tweaks, Edwards found that some clips fitted perfectly into his own X-Wing dogfight sequence.

“Through the magic of ILM [special effect studio Industrial Light and Magic] they cut round them and manipulated them and stuck them into our cockpits,” he said.

It looks like the same shots from IV. Maybe alternate takes to the ones that got used.

The guy sitting in the lookout stand watching ships come and go on Yavin 4 looked familiar, too.

I'll get to the bottom of it. Promise :)

I couldn't even rank these.  Tried several times over, but can't stand them enough to make it 30 minutes in to any of them.

Jyn >>>> ReY. I don't think this is even disputable.

I may be in the minority, perhaps not, but count me as one who felt the Kylo Ren character was very poorly acted To the point of being distracting from what I think the intent was with him.

Was not a fan of Kylo Ren either. He did keep the "whiny little school boy" mentality of the villains of Star Wars up though. Kylo Ren's performance was on par with Hayden's portrayal of Anakin. Yeah, I said it. Kylo was like his grandpa when they were around the same age... whiny wussies.

Coming from one of the biggest Star Wars dorks on the planet, this movie was awful. My entire family thought it sucked.

Going again for a matinee this Tuesday to re-examine. Vader's last 2 minutes is worth the price.

It was boring. And I hate to admit that. I was also hammered. Whoops.
