*** Official *** Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (1 Viewer)

Just got back from seeing it and while I enjoyed it I was disappointed because I had heard such good reviews.  I enjoyed The Force Awakens much more. 

My rankings:

1) Return of the Jedi

2) A New Hope

3) The Force Awakens 

4) Empire Strikes Back

5) Rogue One

6) 1-3 prequels

I have no idea who is where but the Ghost is shown twice in space above Scarif during the space battle.  

They need to have a way to kill off both Ezra and Kanan to preserve the Jedi time line, and this is as a good a way as any.

That wouldn't be bad but I'm hoping Vader just wipes them out.

It's funny how different people's ideas of what Star Wars should be. So many raved of TFA and I haven't even rewatched it since last winter. Rogue One though was incredible. Only Empire beats it in my mind and some call it crap? So weird.

Yeah I don't see how anyone can say it is worse than any of the prequels. I agree. Are people saying that?

 
I went in with medium to low expectations, I thought it exceeded those.  I enjoyed it, would watch again.  Solid entry into the franchise

Not at all.  Rey's part was over-acted.  Maybe it was Abrams direction, but result was the same.  Jyn's character had more layers, was more believable, and followed a much better story trajectory that was anything but the boiler plate version we got from Force Awakens.  Don't get me wrong, FA was a very important--and good--installment to tie in old and new.  But, it suffered similar problems the franchise as a whole has wrestled with that Rogue One avoided.

I'm just saying that the pilots were not CG in terms of them being digital humans (i.e.  They were not created using the technique that was used for Tarkin and Leia in this movie). I strongly believe that they were live-action plates from the old movies (alt takes, cutting room floor, archives, whatever) that are composited into the Rogue One space battle scenes. I will find out. 

 
Just got out. Incredible. Just incredible. With the last 20 minutes or so that everyone's been talking about being mind blowing as a Star Wars fan.

The CGI'd Tarkin didn't bother me at all. 

The CGI at the end was great. The showed her from behind, then it swiveled and you still couldn't see her face, so I thought "okay they're going to be cute and work around this". Then she turned and delivered the last line and my jaw dropped. I understand the reservations from some about her being there, but what a great moment.

Anyone ranking this movie below Episode III is clueless, btw. 3/4 of that movie is absolutely cringe-worthy. Rogue One and Revenge of the Sith aren't even close to the same tier of movie, jesus.

I found the main characters to be very engaging and most importantly, realistically flawed. 

I loved that from Galen, to Jyn and the other named rebels, all the way down to the nameless soldiers handing off the disc while being slaughtered by Vader...everyone had to have their moment of courage and heroism for the suicide missions of the original trilogy to even be possible in the future. Really well done storytelling.

Also pretty fitting that that's where his sanctuary is. It's where he really, fully went full-on dark side and a constant reminder of what he did to Padme and (to his knowledge) his unborn child (he didn't know about twins, right?) 

 
Saw it today with my six year old boy. Thought it was pretty awesome and so did he. Only disappointment was the scene from the trailer with Jyn on the catwalk coming face to face with a tie fighter didn't make it. Thought it looked cool and was hoping to see it. 

I'm so happy they're putting out quality Star Wars movies. There's nothing like bringing my kid and watching his love of Star Wars the same way my dad took me when I was young.

It sucked. It was slow moving slop. The only redeeming factor, was Vader killing EVERYONE at the end. That's it. And yeah, I marked out.

This I can get behind. It really is a pleasure to take the kids, to something "you" and now them appreciate. To see the faces on my kids last night, I couldn't pay for. Force Awakens murdered this flick, in the Jabroni family. Just my opinion.

oh ok, I think we are saying the same thing.  When I said CGI I was talking about the digital manipulation made to do what you said.

Note that Tarken was not a CGI human.  He was played by Guy Henry (Extras fans will probably recognize him).  Only his face was digitized.  Leia was the same way with actress Ingvild Deila.

Not following. And yes, it was not a good movie. Not arguing, even my kids were like "What?"  I said let's go beat up some stoners.....(I did not)

It was the very essence of Star Wars. It had the rebels. Not the squeaky clean ideology. It actually had what it means to be a rebel. You are an outlaw looking to overthrow the establishment. These are in general not very nice people even if their cause is worthy.  

You think our founding fathers were perfect saints? Not a chance. It took blood and questionable decisions all for the ends to justify the means.

Then you have that space battle. THAT IS STAR WARS! I could not stop smiling throughout that whole scene. I felt like a kid watching Jedi for the first time again. 

No idea what else any one could have asked for. Maybe if we knew nothing about the girl and she was super powered as #### and just flew off the planet at the end people would have enjoyed it more?

 
Watching the beginning of IV right now.  I can't get over how well they tied the end of Rogue One to the beginning of this one.  That was just a perfect ending, and adding in the Vader scene might have made it my favorite sequence of any of the movies ever.  I'm also probably just "Star Wars high" as a mother.

Yeah I completely disagree about the lack of character development.  I'm not even sure what that means.  Most of the good guys were very like able and the bad guys weren't.  Not sure what else people want?

The action was good. The character development wasn't.

Empire 4th?  Don't think I've ever seen a Star Wars fanboy have that movie ranked so low.

 
Why are people #####ing about character development as a prequel to a New Hope when you knew these characters are around for only 1 movie?

Yep, looks like I am on an island on this one in this thread.  Big Star Wars fan as a kid and I remember watching episodes 4 and 6 repeatedly.   For whatever reason, episode 5 didn't do as much for me.  Needless to say I was very surprised to hear everyone in here ranking it number 1.

No but I'm not sure what you'd expect from a 2 hour movie?  I'd rather have the hour of action we had then spending 2 hours of showing more of the back story of these characters who aren't going to be around for any more movies.  I suppose they could've made a 3 hour movie but I thought it was just fine.

I thought it was great too. All I said was I liked the characters in TFA better and have it ranked higher.

It's because it's the dark one. A lot of people believe you see the true character of others when they suffer. And that characters grow when they face tragedy (that's a driving theme for Ford in Westworld).
