Got to be disappointing for the front office that he didn't make this decision before the draft.

Sucks for the 49ers, but reading the tea leaves here says the NFL is in big trouble.
ETA: Maybe not now, necessarily, but in 10-15 years when all the most talented athletes at the high school level say "hell no!" to brain damage and go into the NBA and MLB and soccer.

Eh, I don't think this is the end of the world. Boone is better as a RT and they have some depth at OG.
That said, I sure would feel better about this roster turnover if they had hired a competent coach.

People need to realize what a train wreck of a season last year was & they still finished 8-8. Half the defense was injured last year (Bowman, Willis, A. Smith, G. Dorsey, Brock, Reid, Ward) & they just kept plugging in backups. The coach/front office was such a toxic situation that as good as Harbaugh was previously, he hurt the team last year. It doesn't matter who the new coach is, it is an improvement over last season.

So, not really retiring, just taking a year or two off to heal his brain and body. Not a bad idea actually. Obviously, he didn't feel fully recovered from his concussions and he's still only 25. I would bet he is back next year.
As far as this year, Boone to the outside is a possibility and they have been raving about Trenton Brown, the tackle from Florida they drafted in the 7th. Pears in an option too.
I thought Tomsulas response was pretty good. Kind of a "good luck" and now let me get back and focus on the players who are in camp.

I get the feeling there is more here than we are being told. Davis, 25, joins linebackers Patrick Willis, 30, and Chris Borland, 24, and defensive lineman Justin Smith, 35, in retirement. Now only Justin Smith seems like a legit retirement. The others are to young. Never seen so many young players retire from one team in offseason. And with the trainwreck between front office and coaching last year i just get the feeling something is not right in San Fran. I will be the first to tall yall I dont follow or that i am 49er fan but something just dont seem right there.

Andy Lee’s tenure as the most accomplished punter in 49ers history came to a not-so-surprising end Saturday.
Lee was traded to the Cleveland Browns for a 2017 seventh-round draft pick, a league confirmed.
Bradley Pinion’s selection as a fifth-round draft pick last month made Lee’s exit one of the more predictable departures in the 49ers’ offseason overhaul.

That's the thing - ANY improvement by Kaepernick and the 49ers will win games. The defense has had losses and won't be dominate but will still be in the top half of defenses. The offense looks better to me than last year (Hyde/Bush/Davis > Gore and Torrey > Crabtree/Stevie).
Anthony Davis is a big loss, but they can move Alex Boone to RT and then they only need to fill the two guard positions. Biggest problem will be lack of depth.

Glad some of you are staying positive... Personally I don't know how they're going to actually compete for a Super Bowl over the next few years and that's all I care about. 8-8, 9-7, 7-9 is about as bad as you can hope for, I'd rather be really bad and at least get some better ammo in the draft (so ####### Baalke can move down and acquire an extra 9 7th round picks).

Explain to me what is so bad about this team. The defense took a hit but is still good and the offense looks better than last year.

IMO it all hinges on Kap's improvement. 8-8 and third is realistic IMO.
Seattle is a monster, I still think AZ was a fluke and will regress this year, and now that LA has a real QB they will be a force.

Kaep looked bad with JH as his top supporter and HC, I don't know how he improves now. Torrey Smith sucks IMO, Boldin is a dinosaur, and Davis didn't do much to impress last year. Ellington is the only WR I'm somewhat excited to get an opportunity. Gore is leaving some big shoes behind as he has been great for a long time, although I hope Hyde can come in and handle the workload, we can leave that as a question mark. This offense, at best, is middle of the pack.
I'll leave a placeholder here for the OL.
The defense has been destroyed. We lost the best LB in football, right there is a huge loss. The excitement about his replacement quickly disappeared with an abrupt retirement. Our best defender is now coming off a terrible injury that left him sidelined for all of last season. Justin Smith is gone, Dockett is 100. My confidence in Aldon Smith is beyond minimal, wouldn't be surprised if he was in a jail cell as I type this. Glenn Dorsey has never played close to what he was supposed to be.
I also think we will struggle to get any pressure and the secondary gets torched. I do love Eric Reid though, he might be my favorite 49er right now.
Lastly, we got rid of our awesome punter for a rookie (who we used a 5th rounder on)... With the offense probably ####ting the bed, we are going to need someone who can flip the field and give the defense a chance.
I'm just a glass is half empty mindset on this team this year
Hope I'm wrong. Regardless, 8-8 or 9-7 isn't a great season IMO. I just hope Russel Wilson gets a huge contract so Seattle will have to start losing talent, they're so much better than SF as of right now. Paying an awesome QB $1.5MM for the season gives them great players everywhere else.

As much as I like Harbaugh, I thought the play calling for Kaep was terrible. Kaep really isn't a drop back passer & Harbaugh really was trying to get him to that point. The new staff has emphasized they want him to have fun, hopefully this means letting him play in an offense styled to his skill set. As far as the defense being destroyed, I couldn't disagree more. We lost 1 linebacker spot (Willis/Boreland), Justin Smith (who we knew was going) & a few average cornerbacks from last years defense. Dockett may be ancient, but he's a year and a half younger then Justin Smith was. Getting Bowman & Brock back from injuries fills the LB/CB positions. If the large group of injured players on the defense can stay healthy, they will be fine.
They may not be in Seattle's class at the moment, but can certainly contend with AZ & St. Louis.

With the Reid comments now...
This is unique to San Francisco. It may coincidental, but there are no other teams with so much fear and response to concussions/long-term health concerns. I have to wonder if the team/players were exposed to medical information or training/prevention to a point where there is overwhelming fear. It's just strange at this point.

They played a lot of postseason games during the Harbaugh era and he drove them hard. There probably isn't another team that has put their guys through quite as much over the last four years. makes sense that they are worn down and more worried about their health.

These types of things are why you shouldn't be so quick to label teams as rivals. Hope you learned something from all this.Well, at least your team won all those old trophies. Damn, this is just getting too ugly. Was really hoping that the SF/SEA rivalry would have some staying power.
Yeah, he's got to be cut based on the Ray McDonald precedent unless Smith's denials of the allegations have any merit (and they probably don't). They've got some young talent at OLB and this is a transition year(s) anyway, might as well move on.
