Like the guys that have been brought in and with El Cannibal likely staying, it looks good.

Arsenal- doing nothing :thumbup:

Spurs- losing Bale :thumbup:

United- Moyes :lmao:

City and Chelsea will be filthy, spots 3 and 4 are up for grabs.

Early calls-

Aspas 15 goals

Sturridge in and out of the lineup with injuries, but does well when in there

Coutinho- 10 goals and upwards of 18 assists

Henderson- best hair in the league

 
I think West Brom will be fun this year, also Everton, Swans, Soton and maybe Norwich. I've been predicting a fun season with up to 8 or 9 teams with legit hopes of a top 4 finish. 2014 will be a fun year for us with the World Cup and hopefully some good competition in the EPL and UEFA competitions.

I don't know about top 4 for those teams, but there's going to be a legit battle for the Europa League spots among those teams, and probably 1 or 2 we're not thinking about who could emerge. I've been impressed with Swans in particular.

Yeah, Palace may be one and done. Cardiff may be an interesting team this year though. They were really good most of last year and have built a team that may be able to compete. Seemingly want to stick around a while. Bringing in Caulker was a nice move too.

Agree with all of this, except I think Coutinho can score more than 10. He has a breakout season.

I can't see Morata being part of the deal. He's definitely not considered surplus. If Levy can get that it would be highway robbery.

It definitely looks like it will be 80M+ and a player or 100M though (which is well over current value). I would love to keep Bale, but that's impossible to pass up.

 
Morata would just be another player Spurs can profit off of in 4-5 years, Di Maria helps them now.

Supposedly RM has been experimenting with CR as their 9. Maybe he's going to be their defacto "backup striker".

If they've come this far, I think Morata's attainable, it's just a matter of taking less money. Personally, I think they should grab Di Maria and Morata in lieu of more cash.

He looks great, but he's got to show he can do it in the PL, which is a big jump from where he's been. If he pays off for them though, and if they can hold onto Fellaini, then I wouldn't count them out of the running for a CL spot.

They don't need to move Ronaldo. Bale can line up almost anywhere.

Still, could you imagine being a right back and facing Ronaldo on the wing with Bale behind him as a wing back? :lol:

A big part of it is that rule that allows La Liga teams to sell their TV rights individually. RM and Barca have their own channels.

There's actually quite a bit of talk that they don't have this kind of money. In fact, they still owe Spurs money for Modric and I would imagine Levy doesn't have an interest in any more installments from them.

In the end, I think Bale will stay this year and RM will sell Ronaldo next year, using that money to buy Bale.

I think that's what should happen from Spurs standpoint (to get into the CL this year with a much improved club), but I think RM's going to pry him away this summer with the way things are going. If Bale blows his knee or breaks a leg on a bad tackle or something, that will cost them 10'sM in transfer value. The numbers being discussed are too big to turn down IMHO.

By "sweetheart deals," do you mean the banks take some kind of financial hit on their loans to the clubs? I've read that but never quite understood it, what's in it for the banks?

This gives you an idea. The closest American parallel to the near-religious backing that these big clubs have would be like college football at Alabama. You're regarded as one of society's fundamental institutions, like the church in the middle ages. It's a ridiculous mindset that breeds corruption, but it's how it works there.

 
Madrid still owes money for Modric? Why would Spurs want to get into another installment with Madrid? I suppose for that kind of money you almost have to, but how long until Spurs actually see the cash?

They won't. I suspect all cash will have to be upfront.I still think this deal is going to be tough to do. Can RM afford it? Can they agree on players to be exchanged? Do the players want to leave? Will they take a pay cut? Does RM have the cash on-hand?

Lots to sort out. If Bale puts in a transfer request that makes it easier on RM I think, but he doesn't seem to want to do that. Even then Levy really isn't one to back down.

Perez is a big believer that these type of signings pay for themselves over time in jersey sales and publicity.

I also believe Real Madrid, like Barcelona, has been pretty aggressive reducing debt in recent years. So there is some room to spend.

That article blog post is not really describing anything corrupt. These clubs are probably some of the most valuable, credit-worthy enterprises in Spain right now with massive amounts of revenue. It doesn't surprise me at all that they would have generous lines of credit. It is better paper for the institution to hold than Spanish mortgages or European sovereigns.

RM will earn over 500mil this season. It will be profitable. It's debt is reportedly under control. Perhaps its not a great comparison, but the Packers total revenue last year was about $300 mil and the club just completed a self financed expansion at Lambeau that cost $130mil.

I think the Packers have some deals with The National Cheese Eaters Association and The Chubby Chasers Foundation that are pretty lucrative, too.

Seeing a bank give those kind of terms is a little troublesome but I guess you could make the argument that it's still not a terrible business decision if it results in positive PR, or at least heads off negative PR, for the bank. Those customers who disapprove could always take their business to a competitor who doesn't engage in that kind of financing, I guess.

It's a little more worrisome when government entities step in to smooth the way for the clubs. But, hey, it's not like that never happens in the NFL, right? We could have a whole nother thread arguing about that particular practice.

 
Any other Swansea fans here? They kick off their Europa competition against Malmo today. If Bony is the real deal I think Michu could be in for an even bigger year playing the false 9 behind a real striker.

Swansea Malmo match should be a cracker.

Swansea been scoring goals by the bunches in friendlies...and I believe Malmo put up 7 in their last match in Europa competition.

Yeah, I'm going to make an effort to watch them. I like an underdog that's built itself up into a good, competitive team.
