United were pathetic but with so many defensive injuries I guess I should just be happy with three points. I think Mata has earned time now with two goals saving United. I'm not sure why Herrera isn't getting a game. Good time for the International break.

Speaking of All the Puskas...

Carlos Tevez shrugged off an early foul then beat three defenders over ~70 yards today to score a beauty. Goal of the year candidate.

Potential call of the year by Hudson too. Initiated with an outright scream of joy, then he worked in Alberto Tomba, James Bond in a white tuxedo and Boca Juniors.

How good is the front office at Southampton?

Sell off $20-squazillion worth of players and solidly in a CL place.

Arsenal and United still heavy favorites with the oddsmakers to take 3rd/4th though.

For as much credit as Steve Bould has received for fixing the Arsenal defense from a few years ago, he's got some work to do here. Blew a 3 goal lead against Anderlecht and now this. There was no stopping that free kick, but no excuse for giving up that last goal. Monreal looked soft all day, Chambers got abused at times. I know Monreal was out of position but Gomis just like shrugged him off for a free header from 6 yards out!

On a positive note, the Ox has really turned into a hell of a two-way player.

Carzola looks like he should be part of the Lollipop Guild in those socks and with the slicked back hair - just needs the giant lollipop.

I may have missed someone else posting this, but Bayern will be without David Alaba for the remainder of this half of the season.

Alaba Set For Knee Operation

Munich - FC Bayern München's David Alaba could miss the rest of the 2014/15 Hinrunde after suffering knee ligament damage in the Bavarians' win over AS Roma on Wednesday.

The German record titleholders confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the Austrian international will require surgery after sustaining a partial tear of the medial ligament and damaging the meniscus in his right knee during Tuesday's 2-0 victory at the Allianz Arena.

The 22-year-old has been a permanent fixture in Pep Guardiola's side so far this season, making 16 appearances in all competitions to help the 2013/14 champions reach the Bundesliga summit and qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League with two games to spare.

"It's a very bitter pill for me to swallow," Alaba told fcbayern.de on Thursday. "Things have been going so well for the team and for myself recently. After the operation, I'll begin my rehabilitation as soon as the doctors give me the green light. With the support of our medical team I hope to be back out on the pitch as soon as possible."

Though summer signing Juan Bernat should provide more than adequete cover in Alaba's absence, the significant loss of a near-permanent fixture in Bayern's starting line-up was not lost on Guardiola. "David is a complete football player," explained the Spanish tactician. "He can play in a variety of positions. In him, we're losing an outstanding footballer. His flexibility is incredibly important for the way we play."

Bayern will already be without Claudio Pizarro in the coming weeks after the Peruvian striker tore a thigh muscle in training earlier on Wednesday, leaving Robert Lewandowski as Guardiola's only recognised striker.

Stupid Siquiera picked up a second yellow 5 minutes into the second half while Atlético was tied with Real Soceidad. RS got the winner in the 80th. Frustrating game as the ref was card happy and Atlético was too aggressive in the tackle. RS deserved the win.

Felipe Luis might have been the biggest loss of the 3 players that moved to Chelsea in the offseason. Enjoy the bench and your millions... #######.

To say I am psyched about the result against Arsenal is an understatement. That was easily the best all-around match, relative to the opponent, I've seen Swansea turn in for several weeks. And to think how down I was after the Stoke match. If you had told me that the stretch against Everton, Arsenal and Man City would yield at least four points I would've taken it in a heartbeat.

Any idea where Soton would be if he were tracking them? I would expect close to even.
I was wondering the same thing and went back and looked. I believe they're -2 (tied Hull at home), but they've lost to Liverpool and Tottenham on the road, so it may be -4 (I forget the actual calculation). They still have to play 5 out of the group over their next 8 games, so I don't think we really know how good they are besides for the fact they aren't dropping points they shouldn't.

Filipe Luis has been excellent for Chelsea, but unfortunately for him, Azpilicueta has been absolutely lights out. Last week on MNF, Neville and Carragher named Azpilicueta the best defender in England this year. Luis adds more going forward with great crosses and creating danger with Hazard on the right side, but I think Mourinho will go with the stronger defender 9 times out of 10. Many people expected Dave to move to RB (supposedly his more natural position) in favor of Ivanovich, allowing Luis to play LB, but Ivanovich has also been excellent and he's not been needed at CB so far. That said, I think there are several potential scenarios where Luis will get more minutes as the season moves forward.

They were outplayed, maybe not by a whole ton, but still outplayed at both Liverpool and Tottenham. I can't explain why they seem to be on either end of upsets less often than anybody else. It's the one similarity to last year's team.

Galaxy are just hammering Real Salt Lake right now. Galaxy = windshield, RSL = bug Landon lives to play another day.
They looked SO good. RSL just looked lost.

That 4th goal had RSL defenders falling over trying to figure out where to cover.

It was interesting watching Liverpool v Chelsea- seemed like pretty much the same tactical set-up, just done better by the Blues.

I still like Balotelli and think he'll rebound well once Sturridge comes back. Liverpool should find their feet again with those two up front, IMO. But for now, it's just too static in the attacking third- unless Cutey-ino or Sterling can beat a man and attack the space in front of hte back four.

Christoph Kramer's ridiculous own-goal gave Dortmund a 1-0 win over Gladbach yesterday and kept BvB out of the relegation zone, but only on goal differential. Had they drawn or lost, Dortmund would be alone in last place today.

The consensus among Gooners (shared by me) is that while the injuries are bad, and even while we should have picked up a DM and/or CB during the transfer window, this is the first Gunners team in years to be playing at a level less than the sum of its parts. I'm starting to fall heavily into the Wenger-out camp.

Yep - I was going to post that they haven't played Chelsea, City, United, Arsenal and Everton but then again they are playing as well as any of those sides except Chelsea. I do think it will be basically impossible to hold on to a top-2 spot. Top-3 will be even be difficult because the assumption is that one of Arsenal, Pool or United will step up at some point. They could fight it out for fourth with the other 2 of that 3 plus Everton and Totts. Will be interesting to see if they spend any of that money they made during the January window. I think they may need a player or two to maintain a CL spot.

Do we really need all of this Euro qualifying? We can figure out the best 24 teams or whatever, no?
Indeed, I doubt anybody would beef (outside of any revenue issues that I haven't thought of) if we passed the top 8 or 12 into final group and cut down significantly on qualifying groups. The key to me is just giving everybody a path. Having the Germans dog sled into the Faroes is an endearing image but there's not going to be any meaningful competition coming out of it.

The new additions are playing well (yesterday notwithstanding) but other than Gibbs every returning player seems to be injured or struggling with form so far. BFG, Ramsey and Wilshere in particular look lost. I can't imagine what this season would be like without Sanchez.

Yup. Wilshere's always been hit-and-miss game to game, but Ramsey's drop in form has been the most startling for me, and he doesn't even have the World Cup to blame for it. Sanchez is carrying this team as much as any single player can carry a team at this level.

Soton is at +/- 0 t the moment, and have played on par with their equivalent matches from last year from an APLT perspective I believe... (ETA: that was after 8 weeks... I am going to check this later tonight)
