Altidore wouldn't see the field at Everton. Fulham maybe, but the Eddie Johnson experiment was a huge flop so who knows.Everton can have Senderos. Free transfer!
Not so sure about that.Everton has a real lack of strikers. Cahill is not a striker. And the earlier post listing Pinnear and Fellaini as two of their top three players, I don't think so. I think Cahill may be thier 4th best player, but this is a team who's strength is in the back and midfield and building the attack. Pinnear and Fellaini can show flashes of nice play, but all too often they are defensively absent and below par offensively. Cahill did have a nice season last year, especially considering he played out of position for so much of it.
I think Cahill is the heart and soul of the team but I agree he's not the best in the squad. I think Jagielka (sp?) and Lescott and both probably better at their respective positions than Cahill. Heck, when fit and in form Saha might be the best attacker they have.

Jagielka is okay, I'm not a huge fan, still think NEville is the heart and soul of the team, particularly defense. I like Lescott a lot more though, he is a factor on both ends of the pitch.

oh, also :goodposting: with Saha - not that I disagree that he is their best striker when fit, but in the upcoming promos of the MLS all-stars vs Everton, they listed Louis Saha as the face of Everton. Got a good kick out of that one, how many games has he played for them, 20?

Couldn't disagree more about Pienaar and Fellaini. Pienaar busted his tail last year and Fellaini's size gave them options that they simply didn't have without him in the game.I agree that Cahill is not a striker but with the reacquiring of Jo on loan from City and the health of Saha, Yakubu and Anichebe, they should be fine up front.

Wow, I think we must have been watching different Everton games last season because Neville didn't even look like he belonged on the pitch in some of them.

Liverpool have confirmed they have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the sale of Xabi Alonso.

Spain international Alonso has been a long-term target of the Primera Division giants but Reds manager Rafa Benitez has been reluctant to part company with the midfielder.

However, Real appear poised to finally get their man after striking a deal with Liverpool, believed to be in the region of £30million.

Alonso is now set for a medical at Real, while Liverpool have confirmed "the terms of the deal will remain confidential and undisclosed".

**** ####. Rumors that Roma's Aquilani is going to be targeted as Alonso's replacement.

I'm not happy about this.

Hate to disagree with you and diss a former United player, but Phil is avg at best. Yes, he probably does the intangibles (getting them organized and all) but he's really past it - not as badly as Gary mind you but he's a player they would need to upgrade to crack the top 4.

I like Aquilani's game - I don't see him as a direct replacement for Xabi but if they manage to keep Mascherano then he could partner with him pretty well and still free Gerard up to do what he does best. Granted I hope it falls apart but I'm not exactly unbiased.

I really think Jagielka is something special.

I will never forget the Arsenal/Sheffield game where he played GK for the last 30 minutes after an injury...him denying Robin van Persie in the last few minutes made me so pissed.

At least you guys got a price in the range Rafa was after.I am really not able to see how it is possible for Real to do the things they are doing. By my count they have spent around 260 million euros on transfer fees alone this summer after spending 40 million euros on transfers in the winter window. Behind their starters in the midfield and up top; Benzema, Ronaldo, Kaka, Robben, Xabi, and L. Diarra(whom all have joined since December) they look to have a logjam of highly paid players in Higuain, Huntaleer, Raul, RVN, VDV, Schieder, Gago, Drenthe, M. Diarra, Guit, and Granero. Many of whom they have tried to unload to raise 100 million euros but cannot find a team willing to pay what they demand. There is a 245 million gap in their transfer fees paid out and received so far. In these economic times(or any) how does a club do this?

he was only with them one season and he played in 24 league games and 5 more cup games. As for "face of Everton", he is one of their better known players IMO.

I'm upset because I don't think any player can step onto the pitch for Liverpool and replace the production Alonso gave them, which is going to really hurt any run Liverpool was going to make at the title. Also, while its cool (in my eyes) that two American's own Liverpool, it is not cool when they are two utter butt tards that invented money and have brought the club close to financial ruin. I'm hoping they don't see this 30 mil and decide to keep it. And I have no idea how Madrid does it. They are obviously weathly to such a point where money is really just imaginary.

I honestly have no idea how Real Madrid has come up with this sort of money. I think they're gonna be absolutely screwed in 5 years time. They'll be able to unload maybe 50-60m€ of the players they have in excess.

Man I wish that Atlético could snap up a few of these payers.

The players I see going are: RVN, Higuaín, Schnieder, Ma. Diarra, and Van der Vaart. No way Raúl or Guti goes anywhere. They are beloved in Madrid. They are also 2 of the reasons I hate the team.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear - I love that Xabi is leaving. I support United. And unless they replace him then all the better for us. I agree with Kendall, they don't have a replacement for him. Lucas is not the answer and they will kill themselves if they try and change Gerrards role. He's talented enough to play on the wing and CAM but his best role IMO is almost as a 2nd striker playing off of Torres and having Xabi and Mascherano there allowed them to play that way. Liverpool are in the most tenuous position in the top 4 as they as SO dependent on Torres and Gerrard. They managed to almost overcome Torres injuries last year but I don't see it happening again if he goes down.

Ferguson writes off Liverpool title challenge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soccernet staff

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has written off Liverpool's title chances and declared Chelsea to be biggest threat to his team's hopes of retaining their Premier League crown.

Much is expected of Rafa Benitez's Liverpool this term after they finished a close second last season but Ferguson, who is chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title, doesn't think his arch-rivals will be able to maintain their improved level of performance.

"Liverpool had probably their best season for 20 years and still finished four points adrift," the United manager told The Sun. "It will be hard for them to match last season, let alone improve on it. Other teams will know more about them, so it has to be Chelsea as the main threat."

Benitez, who had a few high-profile run-ins with Ferguson last season, is bound to bristle at such comments and will be determined to knock United of their perch. But with Xabi Alonso about to join Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema at Real Madrid, it is difficult to see how a Liverpool side whose focus continues to be the axis of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard can get better.

The arrival of Carlo Ancelotti also brings an unknown dimension to Chelsea, although Ferguson believes the Italian's past record makes him an opponent to be respected.

"Ancelotti will play the Milan way," said Ferguson. "It brought him two European Cups - it should have been three because they should never have lost to Liverpool, so why should he change?"

That put-down of Benitez's proudest moment as Liverpool manager from Istanbul in 2005 will not endear him to the Anfield club either.
If Fergalicious really thought Liverpool wasn't a threat I doubt he'd be saying much about them. But the comment about Liverpool winning the Champions League was pretty unnecessary. Stupid 80-year-old man.

Love it, see nothing wrong with his comments. It's refreshing the brutal honesty and underlying disdain for other clubs that EPL managers bring to the press. It's not as if Benitez has ever said anything about other teams/managers.

If I were Benetiz I would repsond with the brutally honest, "At least when I sit down to take a #### my balls don't dip into the toilet water."I just felt the shot at the 2005 title was over the top. Sir Craphead is just upset he is on even footing with Rafa in the Champions League.

oh of course there is a professional jealousy between the two. And to be fair, both managers have had quite a few unkind statements about the other's teams/players/styles in the past. Rafa is no saint here.

I agree, but at least he doesn't go around claiming United weren't deserving of any of their past titles. He just calls Alex Turd Nosher, well, a Turd Nosher.

Not to defend Fergie, but its certainly true that Milan should not have lost to Liverpool in that final after leading 3-0 at the half. (btw, wasn't it Alonso who scored the game-tying goal in that game leading to the PK's??)(not to mention - while mentioning - that the Scousers only made it to the final on Luis Garcia's phantom goal at Anfield against Chelsea in the 2nd leg of the semi's - IT NEVER CROSSED THE LINE!!!)

Liverpool agree fee with Roma for Aquilani

Liverpool have confirmed they have reached agreement with Roma to sign midfielder Alberto Aquilani for a fee believed to be £20m.

The signing comes just hours after Xabi Alonso passed his medical at Real Madrid and completed a £30m move to the Bernabeu after five years at Anfield.

It has become clear that the two deals were being negotiated in tandem.

Once Liverpool had completed the Alonso transfer, and received the first cash instalment, they were been able to complete the deal for a player to replace the Spaniard in boss Rafael Benitez's squad.

Now theres talk of Jozy moving to Hull on loan and not as a sale.

http://goal.com/en/news/8/main/2009/08/05/...d-up-august-5-6

Anyone have any insights into their roster? Chances of regular first team ball?
Very good chance. Hull's only semi-recognizable striker is Daniel Cousin, and he's often crocked. After that, you're looking at such legends of the game as Craig Fagan, Nicky Featherstone, and Caleb Folan. Jozy would at least be a super sub, and probably start his share of games. Hull does tend to play 5 in the midfield with a lone striker, though.

Good info here, thanks. Crucial that he gets minutes this year

I've calmed down a bit about Alonso leaving. From all accounts Aquilani seems to be a very good young player, just with a history of injuries. I imagine he and Lucas will be splitting time in the center of the field. Hopefully those two can play well enough to keep Gerrard up top with Torres.

I just got back from the Seattle Sounders v Barcelona match. Messi was fantastic. Sold out stadium. Great atmosphere and a great night. Barcelona won 4-0.

Altidore's Twitter feed says press conference today at 2:30PM. First match will be against Chelsea. No mention of the club.

ESPN is also reporting that Jozy, via Twitter, announced, a loan deal with Hull. Press conference confirmed at 2:30 today.

Being available for the Chelsea game is pending the work permit being ready in time. Hopefully that process can move along quickly although even if it does he will be away from his club for a bit to join the US team for the Mexico game on the 12th. I believe the Chelsea game is on the 15th.

:D I watched on ESPN2 - the fans were tremendous. Never stopped with the songs or chants. Messi's second goal was sweet - great pass from Xavi and Messi was so quick to get the ball down and shoot that Keller had no chance. Hopefully Bojan paid attention to that, as he was taking too many touches with the ball in the box. Seattle had some decent chances, but didn't take them well. And Suarez scored again - a good, composed finish.

FA Work Permit? He's gotta have an EU Work Permit because he's been playing in Spain, right?Daniel Cousin isn't that bad...Fagan and Featherstone are serviceable. The thing that we have to keep in mind is that Cousin has valuable experience in France/Scotland, and Fagan has already played a couple of seasons in the EPL. Not saying Jozy can't crack the first team a bit, but not sure I see Phil Brown throwing a new youngster out there on a weekly basis early on when he has more experienced players who are at a similar talent level.

Barça is gonna be tough to knock off this season. Does any team match up well against them? Chelsea seems like the best in terms of players and talent. Real Madrid has enough talent obviously, but it's yet to be seen if they can all play together or what those results will look like.

You need a permit to work in UK since it's not part of the EU.
It actually IS part of the EU. It's just not a full member like France, Germany, etc. They have chosen to retain their currency and some other particular restrictions like labor laws, etc. Each member state can adopt all or part of the "single market" packages. The UK has adopted some of the standardization that the EU presents, but not all.

This answers my question...I knew it was part of the EU, I was just confused...

Ahhh..thanks for the clarification. I didn't think they voted on EU issues and of course still use the pound that's where I was confused. Kinda weird you can piecemeal it though.
