I'm convinced that the refs won't call anything in the box unless you stab or shoot someone.
Bump
I liked how Phil Dowd let them play while not letting the game get out of hand.As a player (and anyone else who's played a bit of the organized game here can hopefully attest), I have a lot of respect for a referee who can balance the game well. If the ref's a hardass and calls everything, it's a problem. The game gets disjointed, people get frustrated. But if the ref fails to keep control of the game and tempers flare and the game gets out of hand, it's just as bad. Phil Dowd did a good job of allowing honest challenges while calling enough to keep control of the game, IMO. I think he did a fairly good job

Honestly though, I'd put them around the same place ST does. Top 20 with a shot to move up into the top 10 if everything falls into place. Right now at around #15 or so.

I think they have the talent on par with Arsenal and Man City, a step below 'pool, and definitely below Chelsea and United (for reference to Premiership teams). In La Liga, they've got the 3rd most talent in the league. I think they're a notch above Sevilla, Valencia, and Villarreal, but below Real and Barça.

Atlético might be one of the most inconsistent teams in the world however. They have the potential to beat any team in the world, and if Forlán, Kun, Maxi, Simao are clicking together. Their defense is more than suspect though, and they've really struggled to have a cohesive unit that doesn't make mistakes, and put the clamps on the opposition. Chelsea they are not. Three of their starters weren't playing for them 2 years ago, yet arguably they've gotten worse on defense since then. It's almost impressive.

Final note on my Atleti. They are one of the least Spanish teams in La Liga. They started 4 players that were born in Spain in this last game (Asenjo, Juanito, Raúl Garcia, and Antonio López). On their opener last season, they actually started 0 born in Spain. Contrast that with Barça, who typically starts 6 or 7 Spanish players, many of them hailing from Catalunya.

Oh and there's rumors that los rojiblancos are going to make a run at David Silva for 25m€. Interesting...

DC United putting up a MUCH better showing against Real than Toronto did. 0-0 at the half.

Cronaldo, Kaká, and Xabi are all starting, so it´s not like there's a bunch of scrubs for Real.

And the EPL is jump started today in classic fashion with the Community Shield game. Chelsea beats United on PKs after a 2-2 draw and another poor effort by a referee. Congrats to Chelsea for taking care of their PKs. Evra and Giggs should not be on the PK first 5, thats for sure.

And how the ref missed the blatant elbow to Evra by Ballack leading to the 2nd chelsea goal is beyond me. replays showed it right in his sight line. And to let play go on when two United players are lying on the pitch after having stopped it when ballack himself was lying on it is incredible poor form by the ref.

And of course the classlessness of Chelsea to run at goal while 2 United players are down injured is not surprising as they commonly display this poor sportsmanship. Call me a homer, yes I am a United fan, but i have seen it too often with Chelsea. And I am sure one of you will point out that United has done it vs Chelsea but keep in mind that was after Chelsea refused to kick out a ball with a United player down.

In any case, looks like the EPL will be full of fight this year.

Of course right after I right that, Real Madrid decides to stop #####-footin' around and simply play straight ahead to their talents.

Robben and Higuaín are currently tearing DC United a new #######. They have no answer for either one of them as these two guys are having their way with the entire defense, especially on the left side.

It's gettin ugly.

Evra's PK was about the poorest effort I recall ever seeing

After watching more of them lately, I like the cut of Wolfsburg's jib. Put me down under their supporters.
They do play an exciting game and it looks like they've picked up where they left off last year.
Was told by Eurosport that they do not plan on carrying their new kits. Is there anywhere to get one of these jerseys stateside? Considering having a friend who speaks German help me order one from their website, but I'm sure it would be ridiculously expensive to do it that way.

 that was a terrible PKAnd to be honest, I don't agree with you regarding Chelsea's "classlessness". Was it a foul? Yeah, it should've been called. Would I have kicked the ball out of bounds? In a rec league game, sure....in a competitive match between two rivals, I'm not so sure. The foul wasn't THAT hard. I'm sure the Chelsea players felt (and possibly rightfully so) that Evra was embellishing by rolling around on the ground. I don't want to make light of the situation because I'm sure it hurt, but IMO, this falls more on Evra and the United midfielders for not covering for him than it does Chelsea. We complain in here all the time about taking dives and rolling around on the ground like you've been shot in the face....well, I'm not saying Evra took a dive, but he certainly looked to be embellishing quite a bit.....and it cost his team.Just my opinion....I hate both these teams

 I felt the same. And it was hard rooting for Chelsea, but they are the lesser of two evils for me.

Getafe had a PK agaisnt Madrid this year that made Evra look like he kicked the best PK in the world.

 It was a foul, but the MU player was grabbing his face and rolling all over the ground, but when you watch the replay Ballack cought him in the chest not the face. For me Chelsea was the lesser of two evils.

I'm not sure where you can look. I looked around the Wolfsburg site for shipping costs, but it seems you have to register to get that info. (Versandkosten is shipping cost) On the Bayern site, where I am registered, the cost is €29.95 ($42ish) for outside Europe with a €20 minimum. Try Ebay.Good luck.

That had to have been rigged. I mean, Getafe is basically broke, and Real was fighting for a shot at the title. A loss to Getafe would have shattered their hopes early and the excitement of the end of la Liga last year would have been dead. It was a payoff from LFP and Real. :blackdot: Here's a link BTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE4kh4Lr9Wg

Anyone know the best way to get World Cup tickets for all the US games? There is a chance I am going. I know someone on here mentioned a lottery. Is it too late?
There's like 4 different lottery windows. It's probably going to be tougher now that you've missed the first window or two.I deleted the tickets link when I decided that I wasn't going to be able to apply. It's somewhere on the fifa.com website though.

Something to keep in mind with the tickets is that once you apply, you're locked in...you don't get to make a decision before they charge your credit card...that's something that stopped me from applying.

Probably some of the easiest to resell on Ebay though. Thanks for the info guys. I'll let you know if I make it.

I believe the person whose name is on the credit card has to show up in South Africa to pick up the tickets or something like that. Seriously.

I have tickets to the US games. We (my group of 6 dudes) have 4 sets of tickets for all 3 games. We got them through the FIFA lottery in the first round. Didn't get any on th 2nd round. In WC2006 the tickets were linked to passport numbers (or German IDs). The passport number and nationality were printed directly on the ticket. I don't beleive the name was printed on the ticket. It was technically "prohibited" from using a ticket that was not under your passport, as a way to try and a) stop counterfitters and b) stop scalpers. In practice they never once checked to make sure the passport matched the ticket, and as I recall I don't think they asked for any IDs at the gate.In WC2010, they are not being as strict about the passport matching. It was well published in 2006, but there's been no mention of having to match ticket to passport. The only requirement is that there are valid passports for the people when purchasing the tix. There are 2 more ticketing phases, plus you'll definitely be able to buy tix on the secondary market (be it from stubhub or through an authorized vendor or something). USA tix are some of the toughest to come by actually, as I think the Us typically has the highest # of applications for their TSTs (Team specific ticket packages).Go back in this thread and look for my posts regarding ticketing.I'm saving up $$ for the trip. The flights from the West Coast are likely going to be around $2000, and I figure 10 days of eating, drinking, and sleeping would be about $150/day. That make the trip in the $3500 range all told (plus tickets, but those are already bought for me).Best of luck dude. I know krista4 is planning on going to some game(s), but I think she typically prefers the quarterfinals or semis and doesn't really even care about US soccer at all. :goodposting:PM me if you have more ???.

so what was the final result for broadcast of tomorrow's game?

Mun2?

and it'll be available free for all cable carriers that have it (even if normally a pay channel)

Just watch it on Telemundo and mute the sound if the Spanish language announcers annoy you. I may do this because they will be decidedly pro-Mexico.

Sorry if this a repost but Adu could be heading to Odense in Denmark. Hopefully he'd be able to get on the field regularly there. Link.

Also, I just moved and don't have cable yet, so if anyone stumbles across a place to watch the game today online I'd appreciate a link or something. Anyone have any idea what the lineup will be? Cherundolo or Spector at rb, Bocanegra lb, DeMerit and Onyewu, Bradley, Clark?, Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore, and Davies?

i was reading on ESPN last night that its very likely that Spector doesnt start. I'm sorry, but this makes no sense to me. He really proved himself in the confed cup and is excellent at crossing the ball (which helps exploit our advantage in the air). Is his defensive skill set really that bad a matchup against the Mexican attack?

From ussoccer.com:

The skinny: The match will be televised nationally in the U.S. in English on mun2 and in Spanish on Telemundo. NBC Universal has announced that it will be offering mun2 as a free preview on Wednesday, Aug. 12, to all distribution partners. DirecTV and Dish Network have already agreed to unlock mun2 on Aug. 12 (mun2 is currently listed as channel 410 on DirecTV and channel 838 on Dish Network). It has been reported that AT&T U-verse TV, Charter, Comcast and Time Warner Cable will be picking up mun2 for the day. Fans should check local listings to confirm availability.
I'm calling my local Comcast now.
