Villa has money, they cry poor but are one of the bigger clubs in England. Fact is, you need to spend a bit of money to be competitive, Villa finished three straight years in 6th and were just behind the big 4, last year they finished 9th. The moves they made were shrewd, they brought in Ashley Young for 8mil, sold him for what, 20million? Milner was brought in for 12, sold for 26m, Downing brought in for 10m, sold for what 20m? Driving wages up can be said of any manager, who is going to not go out and try to get better players?Plenty of managers do way worse with just as much money spent.
They lost £37 million in 2010. Their wage bill was £80 million. Almost 90% of their turnover. That's not "spending some money." That's hemorraghing money. It's not sustainable, particularly as AV never turned the corner to get into the Champions League and make up the money.
Is UEFA installing any rules to counter this kind of spending? I know the Bundesliga has some very strong rules about this which allows their clubs to not spend money they do not have. The EPL is too popular a league to have so many teams losing money. It is not good for a long term business
F'in Germans. Always responsible and ####.
UEFA's financial fair play starts in 2012 as year one of a three year transition phase. I don't think anyone knows exactly how it's going to work out but it's hard to see how the upcoming rules changes have had any significant impact on the transfer market this summer. My guess is the big spending clubs will threaten some kind of breakaway and UEFA will dilute the regulations in response.

Freddy trained well with the Union today. From reports it said he looked good enough to play tomorrow night. Hopefully he can sub in for second half in what is a pretty big game between two of the leagues better teams.

The press conference was said to be strange with Nowak pulling a Joe Pesci/Goodfellas on some reporter when the reporter asked about Adu's impact.

2011/12 Premier League Predictions

Champions: MUFC - Boring pick but it's a team without obvious weakness (unless De Gea springs a leak) and plenty of depth everywhere.

Next four: Chelsea, MCFC, Liverpool, Arsenal - I'm excited to see what Villas-Boas does at Stamford Bridge, but I don't think there's enough talent there. Mancini doesn't make it to May. Liverpool is one of the most unpredictable teams in the league. They could challenge for the top but could just as easily end up mid-table. Arsenal has many question marks but there's nobody lined up to topple them from the top five. I think Spurs take another step back.

Relegation: Blackburn, Wigan, Swansea - Norwich should be organized enough to steal points at home. QPR's survival may depend on them getting their ownership situation straightened out. Blackburn will be a season-long soap opera. Wigan's had a nice run at the top but they're not as good as previous years. Swansea is this year's Blackpool sans Charlie Adam.

Good surprise: West Brom - It won't be pretty but Woy will get the Baggies into the top half. I could say pretty much the same thing about Stoke.

Bad surprise: Everton - The roof caves in and they barely escape relegation.

Opta had an interesting stat on De Gea. He gave up more goals from outside the 18 than any keeper in La Liga last season. And players in the EPL are even less shy about hitting bombs from deep. I think De Gea was beaten from outside the box in the Community Shield.

Press conference was awkwardly hilarious. To Freddy's credit, he said all the right things and came off humble. He even went out of his way to thank Levi Houapeu for giving him the #11 jersey. Classy

Any mention if he would get a chance to play tomorrow?

Yeah, he definitely misjudged the ball. It was swerving, but Dzeko didn't exactly hit a corner with it and he was well outside the box when he took the shot.

That was one of the questions Novak got pissed about. He wouldn't offer anything more than Adu being on the 18-man roster. When pressed on it, he snarkily said something along the lines of "Anyone in the 18 might play"I think he gets a 2nd half run out

I think he was having flash backs to that horrendous first game Adu played in back in 2004 when the league all but forced Nowak to play him against his better wishes.

Robbie Keane is on his way to the @LAGalaxy a source has confirmed. 2 years $8 million - on his way to LA now!

=========================

Note that this is still speculative because LA can't sign him until they move JPA. Tweets are indicating that a couple of teams are talking to LA and that JPA may also retire.

If this does happen, the best team in the league just got better. They are going to have a chance in the CCL if he fits in and adapts.

Liverpool legend. Wait. Maybe that's Robbie Fowler. I probably shouldn't confuse the two.

So I told my dear wife (who is one week from popping out our second son) that all I wanted for my birthday tomorrow was the chance to go to a soccer pub in the morning and watch the Liverpool match in complete peace, away from the wanton destruction of our two year old. You can imagine her response.

I'll be in this thread tomorrow morning if any Sunderland fans want to talk smack.

 Are we really going to allow MLS to turn into a rich get richer league like Europe?

Flipping, PIP, or on two sets side-by-side? I've been known to whip out the bedroom, splice the cable, and go side-by-side when called for.

So has the 35 hour work week. Look where that got them. All you have to do is look at the success of the NFL model and compare it with the MLB model to see what direction MLS should go. If all of the names head to NY & LA, we are never going to see the growth that's possible.

I'm sure this has been answered here somewhere, but is there a EPL for Dummies out there somewhere?

Watching as much as I can, reading as much as I can, but still feel behind on the teams/players/storylines/etc.

Also, is there a great iPhone app for the EPL?
