FIFA is running a vote for the top goal of the year. They have picked out 10 (ranging from huge names like Messi/Neymar/Falcao to no names like Hasli, to even having a goal from a women's game). No Zlatan though which makes Andy sad :( Here is the link where you can vote with all 10 video clipshttp://www.fifa.com/ballondor/puskasaward/index.htmlWhich one did you guys like the best?
Apparently Zlatan missed the deadline by a very short amount of time. He will win next year no doubt. From what I've read Neymar is the favorite to win again this year.
outside of the women's goal, I have such a hard time picking through these, they are all so incredible. I really appreciate the incredible skill and speed of the long runs, but still stunned by the degree of difficulty of the one time volleys from horizontal crosses (the 25 yard volley from a corner kick was a once in a life time connection).
These are edited really terribly. It'd be nice if they gave us a couple seconds before the actual strike. And where's that Crouch goal?My favorite part of this is the goalie on Ben Arfa's goal. I watched it like 10 times. :lmao:

What about Cisse's ridonkulous strike vs. Cech? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RartC7GDuRk
Forgot about that one.This too:

There are probably a 100 goals that could make this list if not more. It is an impossible task to whittle it down to just 10 IMO. Throwing in the women's goal was kind of a waste though of one of the 10. They just should have had a second vote for women's goals. Instead of the Puskas award, name it the Mia Hamm award and start to build some legacy for the women's game.

UEFA suspends Shakhtar's Luiz Adriano 1 Champions League game, orders 1-day community service for unsportsmanlike goal scored in CL.

I think Cisse's is top 3. It's like physics was like "forget it, I'm not going to be applied to this one."
It's a no-brainer in the Top 10
Cisse's goal did win the "goal of the season" award from the BBC. After the game, Alan Pardew made a point to say that Cisse "meant it" and he "hit it true", but at the time I was sure it was a miss-hit (sour grapes, I know). I've never played organized soccer so am ignorant on such matters, but it sure seems very rare to see players intentionally swerve one off the outside of their foot from so far out.

I also had my doubts (and I'm still kind of a Newcastle guy, I suppose). In the final analysis, I'm not sure if it really matters. Even if he meant to do it, it's not as if he could reproduce that shot if you gave him 10 tries. There's no scenario where a huge amount of luck doesn't play into it.Last year, I started playing again in a pretty simple rec league. And I surprised myself at actually being better than I thought I'd be. Toward the end of the season, I started trying stuff I never would have considered. So it came to be that I ended up taking a ball off my chest from about 30 yards away, swiveling around, and hitting a first time volley. And scoring on a 6 foot goal. I never should have tried it. It was a completely crazy idea. I couldn't get the damn thing within 15 yards of the goal if I tried it again. But I hit it just right. I scored another goal earlier that year where I essentially tripped over the ball and it trickled past the keeper. While I intended one and not the other, they were both lucky goals.

Any game (especially an EPL game) features a lot of shots where 1 time out of 100, it's a golazo, and the other 99 it's way over the bar and a free kick the other way.

A golazo is a golazo.

Doesn't appear this will be on tv like last year. Should be another strong test for this group before qualifying in April.

U.S. U-17 MNT Head Coach Richie Williams Names 20-Player Roster for 2012 Nike International Friendlies

USA Looks to Defend Title When it Opens Event on Wednesday Against Brazil at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

Nov. 26, 2012

CHICAGO (Nov. 26, 2012) – U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach Richie Williams has named the 20-player roster that will be competing in the 2012 Nike International Friendlies at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

The defending champion United States kicks off the tournament Wednesday, Nov. 28, against last year’s runner-up Brazil, followed by Turkey on Friday, Nov. 30, and Portugal on Sunday, Dec. 2. All U.S. games kick off at 5 p.m. ET, and fans can follow updates on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt.

Coaching in his first Nike International Friendlies, Williams is bringing a U.S. team that features eight returning players from the 2011 champions, including the goalkeeping tandem of Paul Christensen and Evan Louro. Other featured returning players include defenders Conor Donovan, Shaquell Moore and John Requejo Jr., midfielders Christopher Lema and Rubio Rubin, and forward Corey Baird. Rubin, the 2012 U.S. Soccer Young Male Athlete of the Year, scored a goal in the second minute during the USA’s 3-1 win against Brazil that led to the U.S. U-17 MNT’s first Nike International Friendlies crown.

Thirteen players on this year’s roster have current ties to Development Academy clubs and 15 players overall have been affiliated with the Academy. Louro and Lema won the U-15/16 Development Academy title with the New York Red Bulls at the 2012 Academy Finals Week at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Three players joining the team have been selected from outside the U-17 Residency Program: FC Dallas defender Jordan Cano and midfielders Cameron Lindley (Indiana Fire Academy) and Emerson Hyndman (Fulham FC Academy).

Hyndman is the grandson of current FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman and a member of the Fulham FC (England) Under-18 academy team. Hyndman has earned several starts this year and is touted as an emerging player in the Cottagers’ youth ranks.

Dating back to the start of the AGS Cup in Spain on Sept. 29, the U.S. has posted a 6-3-2 record in its last 11 matches.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Nike International Friendlies, which first introduced visiting national teams from around the world in 2003 as the Nike National Team Friendlies. The USA has participated in all 10 editions, and Brazil will be competing in the series for the eighth time. Turkey will be playing in its third straight Nike International Friendlies, having won the event in 2010 – the first time the tournament format provided for a champion to be crowned.

The competition runs in conjunction with the 2012 Development Academy Winter Showcase which is taking place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, when all 80 Academy teams at the U-15/16 and U-17/18 divisions will play three non-conference games apiece.

2012 U.S. U-17 MNT Nike International Friendlies Roster By Position

GOALKEEPERS (2): Paul Christensen (Seattle Sounders Academy; Woodinville, Wash.), Evan Louro (New York Red Bulls Academy; South River, N.J.)

DEFENDERS (6): Jordan Cano (FC Dallas Academy; Richardson, Texas), Conor Donovan (NC Alliance; Fuquay Varina, N.C.), Elijah Martin (Cal Odyssey; Fresno, Calif.), Shaquell Moore (Unattached; Powder Springs, Ga.), John Requejo Jr. (Real So Cal; Carpinteria, Calif.), Peter Schropp (Omaha FC; Omaha, Neb.)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Mukwelle Akale (Minnesota Thunder Academy; Minneapolis, Minn.), Junior Flores (McLean Youth Soccer; Manassas Park, Va.), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham FC Academy; Canton, Texas), Christopher Lema (New York Red Bulls Academy; Ridgefield, N.J.), Cameron Lindley (Indiana Fire Academy; Carmel, Ind.), Rolando Muñoz (LA Galaxy Academy; Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Ben Swanson (Crew Soccer Academy; Grove City, Ohio)

FORWARDS (5): Corey Baird (San Diego Surf; Escondido, Calif.), Sebastian Elney (Boca United; Lake Worth, Fla.), Rubio Rubin (Portland Timbers Academy; Beaverton, Ore.), Ahinga Selemani (CSA Wolves; Ann Arbor, Mich.), Alan Winn (Solar Chelsea FC; Garland, Texas)

Is there a reason that both the Bundesliga and EPL have a full slate of mid week games or is it just a quirk of the schedule?
The Bundesliga usually has a couple midweek matchdays during the season. This week helps them get to 17 weeks (half the season) before the winter break. On that note, Bayern v Freiburg on GOL TV tomorrow at 2pm live. Replay at 8pm.

Hannover kicked some ### today

Last year MLS took a contract with NBC that was said to be less than what Fox offered them in the hopes for more exposure.

Brian Straus just tweeted the following about MLS regular season games:

"NBC says it reached 13.2 million total viewers in 2012. They compare that to the 2.7 million reached by Fox last year."

I may have found part of the problem at Liverpool...

https://twitter.com/jose3enrique3/status/273215127766040578/photo/1

First Enrique is pretty ripped and I am pretty sure everyone should have a sweet porno/orgy bed like he has. But this is pretty much wrong, right?

Besides this I see Liverpool is on the up and up and still has a chance to get the season pretty much right. If Suarez ends the season as the BPL leading goal scorer and another Europa season for next year I will be good.

ETA: Ipswich is out of the drop zone for the first time in a long time. MM may have it sorted.

Only two teams in the EPL have only one player with more than one goal. One is Norwich. Name the other.
Liverpooloops, a little alte here
What the hell is going on over there? Why isn't anyone else getting goals?
Borini's hurt.
Andy Carroll is at the Boleyn Ground. They really have no backup for Suarez if he's suspended or hurt before January. They didn't have a forward on the bench last weekend.

Did you see who tried to get on the end of Glen Johnson's beautiful cross Sunday? Jose Enrique from the wing.Jose.Enrique.With his chest :wall: It should be an interesting January window for them. If it's not,

Woke up to twitter and Big Soccer all a flutter. It is amazing that this was kept quiet. I will bold the key parts but it is worth a quick read as it could be a game changer for soccer in Florida.

File Under "Out of Nowhere": FL group planning $400m SSS

You sitting down? Good because there seems to be serious, on-the-downlow SSS talk in Florida. And in Tampa of all places.

According to a quasi-hidden website, "VSI Flames, Inc. (VSI Tampa Bay Flames) recently entered in to a formal agreement with its funding partner PRI Development Partners LLC for the purpose of providing the Tampa Bay region with a first class and purpose built soccer stadium along with a separate 20+ training field and Academy complex."

And not just any old stadium but "a new purpose built 28,888 seat soccer stadium that will have a retractable roof and the ability to increase the capacity to 40,000." Apparently not content to simply fight Raymond James Stadium for the occasional USMNT matches, "the parties are committed to securing an MLS soccer franchise" for Tampa.

Crazy, right? Read on, it's gets better.

Check out some of the names of investors in VSI: Shaun Wright Phillips, Mikel Jon Obi, Mark Hughes, and Ian Wright. Safe to say this group has more than a few real soccer heads. Oh and not incidentally, VSI will run a USL Pro club in 2013 that will play in an Empire Fields-esque temporary modular stadium built by Nussli.

In addition to big names and financial backing, VSI seems to have every civic duck in a nice, neat row; the project's listed partners include Tampa Bay Sports Commission, the City of Tampa, Tampa Chamber of Commerce and Tampa Economic Development Corporation.

Names, cash, connections and ambitions aren't enough though. To build a club and a stadium you need land. Take it for what it is but my man in Tampa --Florida soccer's Huggy Bear if you will-- says that the location VSI are focused on "in the heart of Tampa" is downtown near the Ice Palace and belongs to Jeff Vinik, Liverpool FC board member and owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning. If you want another Lightning-soccer connection, their CEO is former Sounders CEO Tod Leiweke, brother of AEG's Tim.

Would a Tampa MLS club & stadium be a collaboration between Vinik and VSI? I can't say and, again, take that info for what it is. But if you want more answers, try to score yourself an invite to VSI's event at The Tampa Club on December 11. According to the invite, VSI and PRI are "bringing a breathtaking center pitch to Tampa Bay on 3.30.16" at a cost of $400m.

Yeah, they've set a date. Call it confident or call it crazy. Either way the whole damn thing is intriguing as hell. Wonder if this is why The Don was high on Florida but not particularly talkative on perpetual also-rans Orlando & Miami in his recent State of the League address?

Here is a pic from stadium porn of the temporary stadium they want to build while the real stadium is being built. This group seems beyond ambitious. I wonder where the real money is behind this or if it is just pie in the sky talk. Guess we should find out if this is fluff or real on Dec. 11th. They obviously have to get into MLS to make this work. I think Ives was going to write an article on that possibility.

SAO PAULO -- Luiz Felipe Scolari is expected to be named as the new Brazil coach, returning to the national team 10 years after leading the country to the 2002 World Cup title.

The official announcement is expected to be made by Brazilian federation president Jose Maria Marin on Thursday.

The president said Wednesday that a new coach has been selected, and sources close to Scolari and the Brazilian federation confirmed to local media that the outspoken Scolari was the one chosen to lead Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.

Setting up a meeting next week with representatives from US Soccer to bring US Club Soccer to our city. Pretty big step and pretty excited.

Big Phil seems like a reasonable choice. The Brazil job is as much managing egos and the media as it is tactics.

UEFA could scrap Europa League

November 28, 2012

NYON, Switzerland -- UEFA president Michel Platini says the soccer body could consider scrapping the Europa League and expanding the more popular Champions League.

Platini tells French daily Ouest-France that UEFA is having an "ongoing debate" about possible changes to its competitions for the 2015-18 cycle of broadcasting contracts.

Platini says "we're discussing it. We will make a decision in 2014."

The Europa League earns one-sixth of the Champions League's $1.73 billion annual revenue, which is mostly shared by 32 clubs which reach the group stage.

The Europa League's longer and more complicated format has also proved unpopular with some clubs and fans.

However, scrapping it in favor of a 64-team Champions League would likely be opposed by European Club Association members whom UEFA is obliged to consult on competition changes.

I don't see why they wouldn't. Does anyone really want to play in the Europa league?

I can remember when the Brazilian media chastised Phil for winning ugly. I think Dunga got a raw deal. He was knocked out by the eventual finalist because Felipe Melo had an awful game (own goal and a red card). That, as they say, is football. The guy otherwise won, a lot, with perhaps the least talented generation of Brazillian players I can remember.

No one WANTS to play in Europa League instead of the CL. However, for some teams if gives them a nice revenue stream with extra games against European competition, as well as exposure for both recruiting and marketing.
